The 2019 Toyota Highlander le second row headrests lack locking height adjustments! yes you have just read this correctly! they are not like the front row locking height increments. They do not lock when they are even pushed all the way down! the only height to lock them at is when the headrest is about 2 from the ceiling! not all people riding in the second row are 64 to use such an extended adjustment effectively. I have contacted Toyota and the case # is 2001250569. Whether the vehicle is stationary or moving, the headrests move up and down with even resting your had on the headrest, unless it is in the locked position by the ceiling. Note: the second row headrests do not have locking increments like the first row headrests. They are not safe for younger and/ or shorter people. Such a design flaw can only compound neck/head injuries in the case of an accident. Please help and do something about this dangerous situation! as no-one has sat back there in our car earlier, I was not aware of this, or I would never have even bought the vehicle.

I was in a rear impact collision in my Highlander. My vehicle was stationary on a highway, having stopped to avoid a collision, and was hit from behind at a relatively high rate of speed (estimated 55-65 mph). My car was pushed into the car in front of it which caused a chain reaction with several other vehicles. Immediately after impact I began to feel neck and back pain and was transported to the hospital. Prior to transport, we noticed that my headrest had broken free in the impact and was laying on the back floorboard.

While driving about 20mph, I was rear ended by someone going 55+mph. During the accident, my drivers seat reclined and the headrest broke. One post broke in half and the other side pulled out of the seat.
I contacted Toyota and complained about the seat as it gave instant pain in the spine and neck and very hard to drive sitting on the drivers or driver side passenger seat. Being too curvey is neither agronomic for any standard size human being nor allows any rest to the backbone. The headrest is very tilted forward, which strains the spine and neck immediately. I had a Toyota Highlander 2005, and I didn't pay much attention to any test drive because the seat on the Highlander 2005 was very comfortable. But 2018 is horrible to drive. I'm very much regretting buying such a car that I can't drive without hurting my spine and neck. The Toyota support suggested using a cushion between the seat and drivers back, and the vendor offered no to fix the issue. I don't think I'll ever buy from a business that punishes the customer through selling horrible products and decline to take the responsibility to fix it. I ended up paying about $35000 for a not ridable vehicle, and I'm feeling miserable about it.

At 5:00 pm on may 16, 2017 I drove home from work (15 minutes of in-town driving) everything was fine. I parked in the garage and went inside to prepare to leave with my family for my son's senior honors night. At 5;45 pm we got into the car and immediately my mom and my husband said, "what's burning?". It smelled like paper burning. Before leaving the house, my husband popped the hood to make sure there wasn't a wire or something else burning under the hood of the car. We dove 10 minutes to town to eat. We stayed in restaurant 30 minutes. When we returned to my car, my mother got in the passenger's front seat and and my husband in back and we all smelled a strong smell of something burning. I looked at my mom before starting the car and saw the black, burnt headrest. It appears there was an actual flame at some point. Everyone got out of the car, we removed the headrest, but the back left side of the passengers seat was still very hot to the touch. My husband drove the vehicle to the fire station nearby, since the Toyota dealer was already closed. The firefighters unplugged the wires from the seat. The seat cooled back down.

The new headrests are too far forward and create a literal pain in the neck. The new headrest requirements are causing the manufacturers to produce vehicles that the end users are having to modify, or set the seats at an angle that increases the likelihood of injury in an accident. This is true of most new vehicles. Please revise the new regulations.
We special ordered the 2016 Toyota Highlander limited platinum model. We purchased the vehicle in a town approx 180 miles away. I was the driver back home. I am 6' 1" and wife is 5' 3". We ordered the adjustable memory seats which are good. The safety problem we have experienced is the headrests. For shorter people they are tilted forward in a awkward position. Other than and up and down position there is no way to properly adjust them. My wife has complained that she cannot be safely positioned or comfortable driving with the headrest in the tilted down and forward position. Adjusting the seats does not resolve the problem either. This just makes the viewing more difficult creating blind spots. We paid over $52,000 for this equipment vehicle and expected comfort and paid for the extra safety features. However my wife is the primary driver (90%) of the time. Her safety as well as others she may not be able to see is most important. I immediately contacted the dealer and expressed the details and safety concerns as well as requesting a workable solution. The service department said there was nothing they could do. The sales consultant we purchased the vehicle ffrom said he was aware of these headrest complaints. He recommended doing what other drivers have he told us to reverse the headrests? I removed and reversed them. This did not accomplish a safe resolution. Instead the headrests sit back much farther enough that when there would be a collision the driver or front passenger could sustain severe neck injuries or worse possible paralysis or death. I can just place my head back enough to touch the headrests but I am then looking up to the roof. I immediately began a safety complaint and case with Toyota, I was told they would contact me in 7 days. It's 23 days later. I researched the compliant and found there are many other dissatisfied owners ! unacceptable!.

I am a certified child passenger safety technician and had a parent come to me with concern about the third row seating in her Toyota Highlander 2005. The head restraints in this model only has two notches. The first is up about 4 inches and the second around 5 inches. There is a huge gap in between. This seat cannot be used for a child in a no back booster since this head restraint has no notches that can accommodate this child's head height. It is either too low or too high. I have contacted Toyota and they stated that their vehicles meet or exceed all safety standards. They referred me to contact their local consumer relations person which the parent in concern had but the gentleman had no clue what she was talking about. Unless this is your primary focus this may have gone unnoticed but this parent had the concern and checked into it. She is absolutely right. This needs to be adjusted in some way. It seems that adding a few notches could accommodate many more passengers in this vehicle. This is useless to her and this is the main reason why she purchased this 7 passenger vehicle.
