4 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2018 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 08/31/2023

These are toyo open country p245/55 r19 tires that have been on my car from 10/23/2020 to now and have 54,600 miles on them. Remaining tire tread depth on this tire was measured using a machinists rule at 6/32" or 4. 5 mm deep. The drivers front tire looked fine on my car during a general pre-inspection I did at 6:45 am as I loaded the car with our luggage for a 7 day drive trip to florida (app 920 miles). I will advise that I did not look at this tire in great detail during this check - just quick look to see if anything stood out that I needed to be concerned about for the drive. The drivers side front tire went flat after backing straight down a 60' long driveway. I removed the tire with the car in the street and took it to the tire shop where I bought these tires. The tire shop guys found several cracks about 1/2" long or longer in this one spot in the tire sidewall at the start of the tread. They had no idea why it cracked like that and had reported that they had not seen cracks like that in that location before in any tire. I had them pull the tire off the rim and put a plug/patch in it so I could get the car back up the driveway to repack our florida luggage in the other car. No other tires show this cracking issue. I will replace the tires on 9/11/2023 with new tires. The tire could have blown out on I-10 at speeds of 70-75 mph due to the almost immediate loss of air pressure due to the crack. There was absolutely no indication of any issues with this tire (or the other 3 tires) prior to backing down the driveway and the tire going flat. I was blessed that the tire lost pressure quickly just backing down the driveway and not on the interstate highway. I drive the car - no one else. The tires have not been abused during the period they were installed. I rotate the tires every 10,000 miles. I do car pm on a 6 week schedule to avoid any such auto issues. I had just completed a pm about 1 week prior to this tire issue with all found ok.

5 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2023 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 04/14/2023

Car tire burst on interstate at normal operating speeds. Bursts throughout tire wall with large blow out on inside. No damage to tread and no other signs of damage. Tire began smoking while finding safe pull off spot. A goodyear inspector suggested a vertical slash in tire was culprit, but slash was not on tire prior prior to being unmounted by inspector. In addition, area with slash was pinned underneath the rim while waiting on roadside assistance, as seen in attached photos. No warning (tpms or otherwise) prior to blow out. Tire was discarded by goodyear. Car is awd, or a more serious wreck could have happened p235/55r20.

I was traveling at highway speed with five passengers, luggage, and bike rack with five bicycles and without warning the driver's side rear tire sidewall completely blew out. The vehicle fishtailed but I was able to move over to the right emergency lane to change the tire. We did not hit any debris. This was a bridgestone alenza a/s sport 235/65r18 tire that was original equipment with my 2022 Toyota Highlander hybrid SUV. The tires were inflated to 38 lbs. I called bridgestone and they told me to take the tire to a bridgestone dealer in charlotte, nc. They replaced the tire at no charge. I left the failed tire with them but took photos.

The contact stated while his wife was driving 60 mph, the rear driver's side tire exploded, without warning. The outside sidewall of the tire had separated. 8 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2016 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 04/06/2018

Left rear tire on our 2016 Toyota Highlander begin to loose air while passing a semi truck on the interstate highway. The tire pressure alarm notified the driver of tire pressure loss for an emergency stop. Upon a complete stop the tire pressure had dropped about 85 % or so, (not flat but very near so and completed the air loss within a short time after stopping). . We know this because I was following behind my wife driving the Highlander at the time. Travel speed was between 65 and 70 mph at the time. The tires are the original that came on the Toyota new and had about 27000 miles on them. Upon inspection of the tire it looks obvious that the tire was defective due to the substantial amount of visual crumbled rubber all inside the tire separated from the sidewalls in side and the massive blisters on the outside of the tire, we had all the tires replaced on the vehicle as we had no trust in the rest of the tires after this happened. Neither the toyo tire manufacturer rep. , the local Toyota dealership, or the Toyota company would take responsibility for the failure, or offered any concessions against the replacement tires. Photos of the tire and or the tire itself is available for NHTSA if there is a request to review. Poor customer service from the toyo tire manufacturer, the local dealership or the Toyota company is quite obvious to us that they had no concern for other people that may have the same toyo tires that Toyota choose to put on the new vehicle that may cause an accident. The tire brand is toyo, tire line is open country, tire size 245-55-19 dot # 73hh (cnd2216).

The contact called the tire manufacturer who offered no assistance and referred him to the vehicle manufacturer. The dealer stated that the brand of the tires was not compatible with weight of the vehicle. The failure mileage was 208. The consumer stated when going around curves, the vehicle would lean into the corner curve more than normal, which would cause the consumer to forcibly turn the steering wheel to bring the vehicle back into the center of the lane. The consumer believed the sidewalls of the tires were too soft, which allowed the vehicle to roll sideways because of its weight, into the corners and curves of the roadway. The consumer stated due to safety concerns, he purchased a new heavier set of tires. Updated evoq 03/04/11.
