The abs brake modulator began exhibiting very loud and continuous pumping/priming sounds for several weeks. During this time period upon hard braking the brake system would fail to respond immediately - there was a delay between the instant the brake pedal was depressed, and when the brakes were actually engaged to slow the vehicle. Today, all the instrument warning lights illuminated, including: master warning light, brake warning light, electronically controlled brake warning, anti-lock brake system, and slip indicator. All this indicates a failure of the abs brake modular component. Toyota motor sales, USA, inc. Published warranty enhancement program - zg1 to address this issue. The warranty is only valid for up to 10 years or 150,000 miles and has recently expired for my vehicle. Toyota motors, knowing this component is prone to failure and could have catastrophic consequences, should take a more proactive approach to ensure the safe operation of all affected models. At present there is no warranty coverage, and Toyota will not repair the faulty brake system. I am left with an inoperable vehicle with an unsafe braking system, unless I bear the full cost of replacement myself.

While driving under normal conditions, all dash lights went on saying check vsc system, abs, brake lights, warnings and traction. Took vehicle to service at Toyota dealer and was told the abs actuator assembly has to be replaced, for nearly $2500. This is a vehicle with under 65,000 miles on it and the actuator should last for the life of the vehicle. I just had the radiator replaced and brakes replaced two months ago. This problem was not detected. Brakes have always been soft on this vehicle. Now the battery is not charging and the brakes only seem to work off and on. I have to pump the brakes to make them work right. This is a huge safety problem as all of my driving is in the city in traffic. From reading online this is a problem that occurs frequently with this type of Toyota highlander and other models. I don't feel safe driving it and I can't afford to fix it. It's barely worth the cost of repairing it. If this is a known public safety issue why doesn't Toyota recall this part? the service person told me the brakes may now fail at any time, in a day or in two weeks. He told me to avoid other vehicles on the road!.
Brake malfuntion warning indicator lights, abs ,vsc(sliip indicatorl) light),emergency brake light and master warning lights illuminate on instrument panel. I,ve been dealing with this for 2 weeks now. The first time I took it in to the dealership, the diagonistic test showed nothing, , but, possibly could be low voltage from a perfectly good 18months and 20 day old battery bought from the dealership. I had a new battery put in for fear of doing anything to harm the hybrid system. May I also add that the dealership offered no prorate on the battery. . About 200 miles, less than 4 days , everything lit up again. Fearing what I had researched on line, they quoted me a price of $5129. 00 for this repair of abs pump/brake actuator. . Really?? who has that kind of money for a defect that should be taken care of by Toyota? I asked them to return the battery taken from my car a few days earlier since that wasn't the problem . I told them I would have to look at my options about the ridiculous repair. I was offered $6000. 00 at the dealership or possibly more for a trade in for my vehicle. . Nice, right?? still in shock,, I pull all the maintenance records of which this vehicle with 113,400 miles has been meticulously maintained. Since it was bought at that dealership now, I am wondering if they even know how to do diagionistic testing since one week it didn't show up and a few days later it did! now, I research more and and find a recall 13v396000 of 09/04/13 for the hybrid propulsion system, inverter component which explicitly describes what happened to my highlander. I am wondering if my car was in that group and if I was. Toyota needs to step up and make it right. I have no problem paying for normal wear and tear of a vehicle,. . . . But this is clearly a Toyota defect!!.
Mechanic put new brakes on all four wheels. When done the : maintenance vsc message; traction control; abs; and brake lights came on. Three other mechanics looked at it and concluded that the accumulator was not working property. I was able to confirm this diagnostic through many exact same complaints on your site. . Also, all the brake components were severely rusted causing an added time to do the parts out. To date there has not been an accident; but the problem in new york is car won't pass yearly inspection because of other filed complaints the next stop is the dealership apparently if I can get there safely. (I'm another person on social security without large amounts of cash ~$2000 - $5000 to spend on a car that is now depreciated to ~ $4500. ) this safety issue needs to be a recall.
2006 Highlander Hybrid, check hybrid system, check vsc light, brake and abs light all on permanently and my brakes aren't working. I was fortunate noone got hurt. . It was really dangerous when you press the brake and it doesn't stop. . . . From what I read abs accumulator which cost 3k+ to replace and the hybrid inverter which cost 5k+ to replace. Nhtsa please issue a recall on this issues.
Upon starting car, brake light came on, plus warning messages saying brake malfunction, check abs, and check vsc system. Took to dealer. Dealer says it needs new abs actuator which will cost $3,300 with installation. I was also told part is on national backorder, and may take 1-2 months to receive. Didn't take much effort to learn on the internet that this seems to be a common problem, and that other Toyota cars around the same period had recalls on this part. Why no recall on this model and year?.
"brake actuator assembly warranty enhancement" which can cause the abs and vsc warning lights to illuminate with codes c1391, c1252, c1253 and/or c1256 may be found in the abs ecu. Toyota had two warranty enhancements for this one 6/12/2007 - 6/12/2017 and the second ended 12/31/2017. We had midas auto service experts do a brake evaluation on 11/25/2017, which showed codes c1241, c1256 and c1391. We had the evaluation done because after breaking the check vsc system and abs and brake light came on. We have the paperwork from midas. It was also brought to the attention of the Toyota dealership salesperson that sold us the car on 12/20/17 and he documented it on his Toyota laptop. The service department was also contacted but did not reveal there was a warranty enhancement for this problem only quoted to replace it would be approximately $2500. 00. This is still a known problem and there have been multiple cases opened for this problem. I opened case 1801083723 on 1/8/2017 and another 1804032206. Toyota told me because the case was opened after 12/31/2017 and the service department did not run a diagnostic on it there is nothing they can do under the warranty enhancement even though we have proof from midas (a third party) there was an issue on 11/25/2017 and the Toyota sales associate has notes in reference to it as well on 12/20/17. This is very dangerous due to not being able to stop and since it is a known problem Toyota should open up another warranty enhancement and be liable to repair these vehicles as they are brought in. Toyota did run a diagnostic on it 3/28/2017 and had the same problem as it did on 11/25/2017 when midas ran the evaluation on it.
Abs vsc and brake lights are on - as per hartford dealer need to replace these parts 44050-48320 and 47070-48020.

Abs system failed at 137,000 miles , mechanics stated this should never happen,I was driving when abs brake light came on and continues to stay on, and on 09/17 my abs and brake light is on,and when I push brake petal down , my car does not stop. Unable to get car to come to a stop. I recently change my brake pads in August and everything was working perfectly untill septamber 20th 2017.
Abs system failed at 180,000 miles , mechanics stated this should never happen,I was driving when abs brake light came on and continues to stay on, and on 6/10/17 my abc light is on,and unable to push brake petal down , unable to get car to come to a stop.
The abs actuator and pump on my 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid spontaneously failed while driving at moderate speeds on a city street. The abs indicator light, brake failure light, and vehicle stability control light all came on at once. The car then abruptly decelerated to idle speed before I turned off the roadway. There was no impact on the car and no speed bumps/abnormalities on the pavement. I took the vehicle to a local Toyota dealership who stated the problem is as listed above, that the abs actuator and pump had failed and would require replacement. I have not yet performed the replacement.
While driving from orlando to tampa florida my wife had the abs brake warning light came on and a weird noise coming under the vehicle. She was able to make it home and we took the car to dealer. They said we needed to replace the brake actuator at a cost of more than $3,400! we can't understand why such a small part would cost about a quarter of the value of this vehicle and after doing some research online I found numerous other people that have had the same problem. This issue really needs to be looked into and Toyota should issue an immediate recall.
My abs pump/actuator started making a weird sound and runs a lot. I was told that it needs to be replaced and was quoted $3200. I have a check vsc message, brake light, and abs light on now as well.
Upon starting my car, the check vsc system, brake and abs lights came on. I turned of the the engine and the warnings went away. About three weeks later, as I was driving down the freeway at 70mph, the warning lights suddenly appeared. Took the car to the dealership and was told I need a new battery. Next days, as I was driving down the freeway, again out the warning lights suddenly appeared. Too it back to the dealer and three days later they tell me I needed to fix the brake actuator and the cost would be over 4k. Out of nowhere, the brakes just fail. We can't afford to have the car fixed.
Check vsc system, brake and abs lights come on, also audible alarm. Abs braking does not work.
On 12/02/13 the brake light and vcs system light came on. The warning light also went on and a beep noise inside the cabin, brakes does not function (breaks not responding). I took the car to an authorized Toyota dealership. According to the dealer codes (c1241 low or high power supply voltage, c1256 accumulator low pressure, and c1391 abnormal leak in accumulator) must be replaced the actuator assy, b part no. 4405048190. Actuator was replaced on 12/28/13 at $1,495 with tax for $ 1,600 and labor cost of $333. 84. Ust be replaced. On 05/25/15 again the brake light and vcs system light came on. The warning light also went on and a beep noise inside the cabin, brakes does not function (no break). I took the car to an authorized Toyota dealership for a diagnostic and I pay $64. 20. Again they mentioned that for a second time the actuator assy, b part no. 4405048190 needs a replacement. I ask for the guarantee and only was valid for 1 year. Diagnostic trouble codes report (abs/vsc/trac), codes (c1252 break booster pump motor on time abnormally long, c1256, accumulator low pressure, c1391, abnormal leak in accumulator). I think that there is an electronic problem with the 2006 Highlander Hybrid and they do not know what the cause since is in a 6 years period the actuator assy was replaced and less than 1. 5 year again the same part (actuator assy) needs replacement, current price is $2,000. I cannot use the car the brakes are not responding and I can have an accident.
Took 2006 Toyota hybrid highlander in for a popping sound and vsc light , abs brake lights on. The Toyota dealer told me it needed a new abs accumulator for $ 28881. 71 . I was told this was dangerous that brakes could fail !!! upon looking I find this to be a problem with others . . . Time for a recall !!!!!!!!!!.
While driving the vehicle at approx. 60 miles per hour the brake light and vcs system light came on. The warning light also went on. In accordance with the owner's manual, I took the car to an authorized Toyota dealership. According to the automobile status report, the abs-hydraulic control assembly: with ecu must be replaced. According to complaints I researched on-line, several complaints have been documented relating to this make, model and abs system. I filed an incident with Toyota (reference number: 1308221198). The intake representative who checked with the dealership said this wasn't a recall item and no support was available to extend the warranty on the part. She confirmed that the service department stated that there was no defect in the workmanship. I asked dana (the person I spoke to) if I could take the vehicle for a second opinion relating to the abs part. I also asked for verification that the service department actually checked the part for a defect or is qualified to determine if in fact it is a manufacturers' defect. The dealership quoted that the abs part; brake flush/fluid exchange/bf; engine air filter replacement;a/c service-acs; coolant flush (premium)-cf; and fuel injection service would cost $2,250. I also asked the Toyota customer service representative what the battery expectancy on the car is and whether the manufacturer offers any support in terms of the costs. I was told by the dealership that the battery can cost $5,000. 00 to replace but the manufacturer may offer some support. I would appreciate your assistance, research and filling of this complaint.
I own a 2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. It has had three instances of unintended low speed acceleration since I purchased it in June 2009. The first time it happened, it was so unexpected and unconventional that I thought it must have been a mistake in my perception. The second time it happened I was more aware because it had happened once before. And the third time even more so. Now I am alert for the event and will try to record it as accurately as possible if it happens again. As best I can describe it, I was slowing down, almost to a stop. It is at the point where you have slowed the car by braking, then take your off the brake or lighten the braking prior to the final braking which brings you to a full stop without a small jolt. I probably was traveling between 5 and 10 miles per hour. I had my foot off the gas and believe probably off the brake as well. All of a sudden the car accelerated. I depressed the brake and the car stopped normally. I have not worked on cars in years, but did extensively when I was a teenager. So I think of my senses as reasonably attentive to the sounds and motions of vehicles which indicate that something is amiss. Hope this helps.
Re. Toyota 2007 Highlander Hybrid braking failure resulting in a high speed collision. I was involved in an accident that occurred on thruway 87 in the state of NY which was largely the result of the brakes on my Highlander Hybrid not functioning properly. What happened: I was heading northbound traveling 65 mph with traffic on the thruway a little more towards the heavy side but traffic was moving smoothly. Apparently, several vehicles a head of me, a goat ran onto the thruway and a tractor trailer locked his brakes up and came to a stop. There were probably three vehicles between the truck and myself and first two vehicles quickly moved into the left lane with the last vehicle practically swerving into a space that hardly fit his vehicle at the last moment. This quick movement alerted me to be on guard and I moved my foot over to the brake pedal. The truck didn't have brake lights or flashers on nor had there been any brake lights visible to me to indicate slow moving traffic ahead so I was still traveling at 65 mph before realizing after a short delay that the truck was at a stand still. I quickly decided that the left lane was full so I couldn't swerve left, the right lane had a guard rail there but looked like there might be enough room to squeeze by on the shoulder albeit with a high risk of flipping, so I chose to brake and square up on the truck's bumper. I was about 90 to 100 yards out when I started braking. I felt the anti-lock brakes pulsing hard and the vehicle was shuddering hard. After about 5 to 10 pulses, the brakes stopped working and the vehicle coasted but doing this at 50 mph+ and this goes on for 40 yards or so until right before impact. I felt the anti-lock brakes start kicking in again but it was too late. I hit the rear of the tractor trailer at around 50 mph and stopped dead. I had called my Toyota dealership several times of the braking problem (I. E. , inconsistent operation on rough surface) and also I logged it on dot's website before the accident. Updated ivoq 09/15/10.
Have been experiencing braking problems . . . Driving in traffic or coming to a complete stop fairly quickly (I. E. Stop sign), the brake engages . . . Lets go for a second. . . Catches, car stops. This didn't happen all the time, but it began happening quite frequently . . . Took it to Toyota. They changed the brake pads and rotors on the front . . . Since there was a technical bulletin on the newer model, but not mine. Riving on a service road . . . 55-60 mph . . . The car starts slowing down by itself . . . Constantly. . Kept speeding up and it kept slowing down, as if brakes were being applied. . . No brake lights though. Today I was driving the car . . . Going down a gradual slope . . . On a turn . . . Braked . . . The car sped up . . Went from 30 mph to about 35 mph, while braking . . . Car skided off the road, skid light came on, beeping non stop . . . Hit a pole. . . Shattered my mirror and scratched the side . . . Car wouldn't stop . . . Threw it into park and finally skidded to a stop. Driving on Thursday, about to come to a stop and . . . . It does this short stop thing recently. . Where it brakes rather forcefully and abruptly when it is cold. . . So after that happens . . . The car completely shuts off. . . And comes to a full stop. No lights. No engine. Brake pedal goes all the way to the floor. Car is still in drive, key still in ignition . . . Push it into park, take out key. . . Restart. . . . Driving again. The glove compartment light doesn't turn on anymore now. This has happened 3 times since last Thursday now. There are alot more incidences and different failures.
