9 Service Brakes problem of the 2016 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/02/2019

Brake booster is bad. Brake is spongy. Repeated attempts to take to dealer lead to no action after complaining loudly and the dealer said my wife just has high blood pressure. But that is not the case, my highlander has low brake pressure not "high blood pressure. Toyota does not share information about this defect by pretending defect doesn't exist and not notifying dealers. Check prius booster recall. Similar technology that doesn't seem to change.

10 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/01/2019

All warning lights are on to check brakes, abs. Abnormal leak in acumulator - abs brake actuator needs to be replaced. I was sent a recall on this problem with my 2012 prius (although it is fine) but the highlander has the exact problem. When googling this I found many 2008 highlanders with the exact same problem. Toyota wants $3600 to replace the abs acumulator yet they will replace the same part in the prius as a recall.

11 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/12/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. While driving up a hill at 20 mph, the vehicle stalled and the abs, traction control, steering system, and battery warning indicators illuminated. In addition, "stop vehicle in a safe place immediately" appeared on the instrument panel. The contact had to depress the brake pedal with excessive force to stop the vehicle. The contact coasted the vehicle over to the side of the road and had it towed home. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The failure recurred and the vehicle was taken to royal south Toyota (located at 3115 s walnut st, bloomington, in 47401, (812) 331-1100) where it was diagnosed, but no failure code was found. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 124,842.

12 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/04/2019

Brake actuator assembly on my 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid has been failing. Know issue. I've taken excellent care of this vehicle and had it serviced at the dealership. The manufacturing is replace the previous years, but not the 2008 which is the exact same component. Please let me know why this is happening. Not just to me, but others too. Please help us. Thanks.

13 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/26/2019

I am told I need to replace the brake actuator assembly on my 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. My research indicates that this component failure was a known problem for years and was actually covered in a recall for 2006-7 models. For reasons unknown the recall does not cover 2008 even though it is the exact same component. This is a serious safety issue and Toyota seems to be passing the cost off to the consumer.

14 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/16/2019

Takata recall . . My car start getting an error light in my dashboard. . It says brake malfunction , vsc system and abs system . . My car runs fine but sometime when I press the phrase pedal car doesn't break right away and making noise.

15 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/02/2019

Intermittently, while driving down the road, all of the dash lights come on, there is a high beeping sound, and the brakes stopped functioning properly. The brakes either need to be matched with extreme force or the brakes will slam by barely touching the brake pedal. Toyota acknowledges that this is an issue and offered a warranty extension to owners of this vehicle. I purchased the vehicle after the extension was offered and haven't had issues until recently. I am concerned for not only my safety but the safety of my family. I have been a Toyota fan for all of my adult life. However, after dealing with this issue and being quoted $2000 to fix it, I would offer advice to anybody or not to buy a Toyota or at least not a Toyota hybrid. Buyer and driver beware!.

16 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/02/2019

Abs pump and actuator failure. Warning lights on the dash buzzer, and nearly complete loss of stopping power, reduced fuel economy. We own a 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid which confirmed by the dealer has a 100% failure rate which is the exact failure previously recalled on 2006-07 Highlander Hybrids, and 08-09 camry hybrids. This failure throws the same code, same symptoms, same parts as recalled on previous years, and same years in other models however Toyota some how got away with not recalling 2008 highlander models. This is well documented on this site, consumer affairs and tons of other sites on the internet. I would like to see the government step in and force Toyota to extend there warranty and recall these models. Toyota, there dealers and the public are very much aware of how shady Toyota has been not honoring different years with the same part. This repair is on average $3k dollars.

17 Service Brakes problem of the 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/18/2019

A sound of squeaking/pumping air occurs sometimes when I depress the brakes. This sometimes continues to happen even with the car is stopped completely. If the brake is depressed less, the sound occurs less frequently. I had it inspected by an independent mechanic and a dealership mechanic and was told the abs assembly has a leak and needs to be completely replaced for a fee of roughly $2,300. This first occurred with mileage around 152,000.

18 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/14/2019

Once car was sitting in a lot and another time, running on highway. Abs, brake, traction control, vsc lights came on also message display said abs message and brake message. Codes from abs dtc,s are all a c-0371, 1271 through 1278, 1281, 1346, & 1391. Seems to be same issue as the '06-'07 Highlander Hybrids and the '04-'09 prius. There was an extended coverage for the brake actuator on those vehicles. I have been reading many other complaints, same things, with the '09 highlanders. Looks like repairs range from $2500-$5000,which is ridiculous.

19 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/01/2019

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Toyota highlander. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle stability control and anti lock brake system warning indicators illuminated. The contact stopped and puul over to the side of the road. The contact also stated that the failure occurred sporadically. The contact also mentioned that the vehicle was repaired by the local dealer the contact also mentioned that the vehicle was repaired by the dealer Toyota of hattiesburg, 6461 us-98, hattiesburg, ms 39402 in February 2017 and this was a re-occurrance. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired this last time. The approximate failure mileage was 170,000. Bp.

20 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/21/2018

I recently had a number of service lights appear on the dashboard of my 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, including the brake, vsc, and abs. There was a message stating that I should take it to a dealer for service immediately. When I took it to the dealership, they determined it was an open circuit in the brake actuator (abs). To my surprise this is a $3,000 plus fix and when I researched the problem online o found out there was a recall for the same part for the 2008 Toyota camery hybrid and many complaint posters suggesting that I voice my concern here.

21 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/19/2018

I was driving slowly in traffic when several dashboard lights came on and error message began rotating through the center screen. "brake malfunction - stop the vehicle in a safe place immediately, and contact a dealer,' "check abs - have your vehicle checked by a dealer," and "check vsc system - have your vehicle checked by a dealer. " after researching this issue and having the car scanned by a mechanic, the problem appears to be the brake actuator assembly, and this appears to be a well-documented problem for Toyota. They have this exact issue covered under a warranty enhancement program for the 2006-2007 models of this car, but for some reason have failed to include the 2008 model despite the same issue with those. I have found several examples of others with the same vehicle and same issues online. Clearly Toyota knows this is a faulty part and yet they continue to use it and drew an arbitrary line in the sand on which ones they would fix. This part is not functioning as it should, they know it is bad and should be held accountable to fix it. I am very concerned by the safety factors this malfunction represents.

22 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/15/2018

I have had to replace the brake actuator on my 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid 3 times since 2014. Replacing this part is a $2500 - $3000 repair. The first time, we paid out of pocket. The second time, I was told I would have to pay out of pocket and I declined. Parked the vehicle for about a year and then received notice from Toyota that the part was being offered an extended warranty under letter zg1. At that point, I had the part replaced under the extended warranty. Now the part has failed again. This is a very serious issue as it controls the abs braking system and failure can have devastating consequences. I think Toyota recognized the issue, made adjustments, but did not make proper adjustments and still has issues with this part. Particularly - this issue may be related to the fact that the hybrid vehicles rely on the braking system to regenerate the battery.

23 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/10/2018

Takata recall- when fuiling from the pump, nuzzles keep shuting off itself like the tank is already full. Its been happening recently. At the same time, check break system by deler start appering. It takes 3 to 4 push to start the car after this error message. Sometimes it takes longer and especially it happens in the morning. Took to deler but they did not find a code to check but this is still happening.

24 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/01/2018

The brake actuator module failed in 2013 and the replacement module failed again in 20018.

25 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/26/2018

Dashboard warning lights came on all at the same time and stayed on. Went to diagnose repair and they said it needs a new brake actuator. Upon investigating, I see that Toyota extended the warranty for 10 years but it expired on Dec 31 2017. Upon reflection, we have felt the brakes occasionally become very stiff and hard to stop the vehicle while in motion. The mechanic says it is because of the actuator issue. I feel this safety issue, albeit rather old, is a known issue to Toyota and they should provide some recourse for the repair. I have included the diagnostic showing diagnostic codes and mechanic evaluation.

26 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/17/2018

Car has been kept on a garage and well taken care of. We have followed the maintenance schedule on it meticulously. However, today we found out that the brake actuator is leaking and could cause catastrophic failure. This seems to be a problem on many cars from this year, and obviously from previous years since a recall was already ordered for years 2007 and 2006. This seems to be an obvious problem with this component.

27 Service Brakes problem of the 2012 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/27/2018

Brake booster pump/abs actuator c1391/c1256 were codes given in attached report from Toyota. This is apparently been a problem with other models of Toyotas and are covered under a warranty enhancement, however the 2012 is not covered. Nothing seems wrong with the car and they cannot really tell me what exactly is wrong or if it is a bad sensor, however they want $4,200 to replace the whole unit. Seems like this is a known issue that they have not been able to fix from previous models and would like it covered due to potential safety risk.

28 Service Brakes problem of the 2010 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/24/2018

Abs - code -1391,this is second time, first time(2016) was changed this part -44510-48080.

29 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/22/2018

The brake system completely went out of order suddenly, during the motion in the street. Although the brake system liquid was renewed in Toyota center just few days ago, few days prior to required scheduled maintenance date. Now the price of the brake system repair is catastrophic. As I am asking for advice, all the other highlander owners complain about the same. This is a big shame for Toyota.

30 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/19/2018

"takata recall" my 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid has been making a loud scrapping screeching noise from the left rear brakes. Brake discs and emergency brakes were replaced, but the noise persists. It feels almost as if emergency brakes are activated but the car can still move forward. Sound lessens when driving and does not appear when car is in reverse.

31 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/18/2018

The brakes started making a weird "burping / barking" noise and then the dreaded c1391 code popped up. There was a recall for the abs actuators on the 2005-7 years but yet here we are with people reporting this failure on the 2008-11 years in droves. Clearly there is the same manufacturing issue. Ironically I had my highlander into a Toyota dealership for weird brake noises a year previously and they told me they were normal.

32 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/26/2018

My 2008 Highlander Hybrid has been making a barking sound each time I depress or release the brake. I took it into the dealership to find out that it's not a recall item. The same brake actuator part is covered by a recall by Toyota up to 2007 and Lexus up to 2012. I've been told that it's not a safety issue so not covered by Toyota, however I've read pages of complaints on this website for this exact problem, and I do not feel safe driving this car knowing that I may have a problem that could cause an accident. Toyota says it's not a safety problem so not covered by a recall. The car is meticulously maintained, in beautiful condition, and it is current on all of the recall notices from Toyota. It's a fairly expensive repair that I think Toyota should step up to make, especially considering how many cars are having the same problem and worse.

33 Service Brakes problem of the 2016 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/01/2018

I was stopped and in park with the vehicle running when the "check vsc system," "check abs, brake malfunction" warning lights came on. They have since gone away and returned intermittently. Fortunately, there was no failure while in motion, but dealer estimated $4600 for repair. If this is the same problem for which warranty coverage was extended for 2006-07 models, this appears to be an ongoing issue.

34 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/27/2018

Failure of brake accuator and accumulator.

35 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/22/2018

Lights appeared on dash "brake malfunction", "check brake system", "check vsc system". Took my 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid to my local Toyota dealership. They said that it was the abs brake system and it would cost $6000 to repair. I had the exact same problem in my 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. In that case, Toyota issued a warranty extension and the brakes were fixed by the local dealership. I had not yet decided what to do about my current brake problem. I had just gotten all four tires replaced as they were getting bald. I was on a trip back from va to SC with my family on I-95 south. It was raining. I was in the left lane and there was heavy traffic. There was suddenly a large traffic accident ahead of me and cars came to an abrupt stop in both lanes. I hit the brakes and began to skid. I do not think that there was enough water on the road that I was hydroplaning. . . I was simply skidding on the wet pavement. I could not stop in time to keep from hitting the car in front of me, so I steered into the emergency lane, still skidding. Another car swerved into the emergency lane so I turned the wheel again to skid into the grass on the left side of the highway. I was now skidding sideways down a grassy embankment towards trees at the bottom of the embankment. Luckily the car finally skidded to a stop and came slowly to rest against a tree. There was body damage to the vehicle, but nobody was injured. I am sure that the abs brakes were not functioning and this is why the car locked up and skidded so far. It was skidding as if we were on ice.
