36 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/07/2018

While attempting to make a stop at an intersection during city driving the brake pedal became very hard to press down and several warning lights came on my vehicle dashboard. At first, the problem was intermittent but progressively got worst over continued driving. I took my vehicle to my local Toyota dealer for inspection. The service manager informed me that I had a problem with the abs brake system module and the repair was about $2,600. 00. I parked the vehicle because it was no longer safe to drive and to many close calls. Later I found out that this 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid and several proceeding model years had a very extensive consumer complaint number for this very same abs brake system concern. I contacted the service manager at the same local Toyota dealership about a warranty at which time the service manager informed me that my warranty expired which I never was informed. It seems to me personally this is how the air bag safety problem was over looked on these vehicles until consumers lost their lives on faulty consumer products that got progressively worst over time. Several of the other import manufacture have offered recalls on the very same abs system brake concern. Toyota has yet to offer a recall several model years into this safety concern with the abs brake system. If we as consumers can't stop our vehicles while driving on the city streets or highways accidents happen and people die. This safety concern has gone on long enough with thousands of complaints over the years for the same abs brake system concern. There must be a much better job at protecting the consumer safety from continued safety concerns not being addressed by Toyota. All the other import manufactures have step up with recalls, whats taking Toyota manufactures so long after years of the same safety concerns. Please help us with this abs brake system concern.

38 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/05/2018

First a loud ringing happened and car would not stop. We have serviced car regularly, brakes are new, but car does not stop. Trying to brake at the intersection, stop light and highlander would not stop. Put us in danger almost led me into accident, was told it was the abs system and that Toyota is aware of this. This is a huge safety design issue and expensive fix Toyota needs to fix their design flaws. There is not physical contact or wear and tear on the part for it to fail. Ms. Deborah huston at Toyota stone walls the process to get this resolved. She claims Toyota is not aware of these issues, but the NHTSA records show customers have been complaining for a long time and that they know.

39 Service Brakes problem of the 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/04/2018

The abs brake pump leaks. It's a $2000 repair. There was a recall, but I never got the recall letter. The recall expired 8 months ago and Toyota won't honor it, even though they confirmed they sent the recall letter to the former owner, 17 months after I purchased the car. They did not send the letter to the registered owner on file with the state, they sent it to the address they had on file with Toyota.

41 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

43 Service Brakes problem of the 2010 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/11/2018

I almost got in to an accident on 5/11/2018 due to the abs system not stopping the vehicle while driving in I-95. I got a warning light on the dash as I was pressing the brakes, later the car did not wanted to stop, but it did not prevent me from hitting the other car. I press on the emergency brake and I was able to stop the car. Later, I took the car to get diagnose and put error codes c1391, abs accumulator leak or malfunction. Contacted delray Toyota in delray beach, FL and they deny to do a recall when there is an extented warranty recall on camry and prius model line for the same problem. Called Toyota corp. And they are denying to do anything to fix the safety problem with this vehicle. They stated that since there were not enough buyers for this model, they will not cover or make a recall on safety for the public. I have found over all the internet complaints about the same issue. I am looking for a resolution. A picture of the errors codes on the vehicle is included on the complaint.

44 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/07/2018

I was stopped at a traffic light at the off-ramp of east-bound 202/mcqueen rd exit. My right foot was on the brake pedal, when the vehicle began to accelerate unexpectedly and hit the rear of vehicle stopped in front of me. As I realized the collision, I pressed the brake harder deliberately (while the car in front of me had started to move further), and to my horror my car continued to accelerate despite my depressing the brake pedal. I consciously checked my feet to ensure I was pressing the brakes and not the accelerator. My car continued to strangely & unexpectedly accelerate until it hit the same car in front of me again the 2nd time at the traffic intersection. After the 2nd collision, my car stopped and I pulled over to the side of the mcqueen road.

45 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/01/2018

A bunch of lights came on including my abs and warnings flashed. . I brought it to a Toyota dealership in GA and they tried to charge me like 4000 to replace it. . They told my wife if it wasn't replaced she may die when she left the dealership. She was praying and completely scared out of her mind. It's still not fixed. . She drive it with all the lights on to colorado and I still have no idea how I can fix this problem. Apparently I'm not the only one. . I love Toyota and really hope some one reaches out soon.

46 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/01/2018

I have a 2008 Toyota higlander hybrid. Dash warnings appeared suddenly: check vsc system, check abs, brake malfunction. I took the vehicle to my local dealer and was told that the repair would cost $6000. I previously owned a 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. Same thing happened in that vehicle. Toyota issued a warranty extension and the problem was solved. Looks like the same issue in the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid.

47 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/01/2018

We purchased a 2008 Highlander Hybrid in 2016. The car was practically maintenance free until last week. All service except oil changes have been done by the local Toyota dealer. My wife was pulling out of the driveway when the abs/vsc lights came on and the console said to pull over. A code scan said it was c1391, internal acc pressure leak. Took it to the dealer. They said it needed a new brake accumulator and a new brake booster for a total of over $5000! researching the issue, I found it is a fairly common issue for these cars. When I called Toyota to ask if the cost of this repair, equal to 1/3 the cost of the vehicle, could be mitigated, I eventually got a woman who told me that since I didn't take the car in to the dealer for nearly a year in 2015, I was not a loyal Toyota customer and they have chosen not to help me. Really!!?? the car didn't need any service during that time! I own 5 other cars including a couple of bmws and I have never had a repair this expensive and have never been admonished by an automobile company representative for not getting a car serviced when it didn't need it. This was our first Toyota and will be out last.

48 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/10/2018

I bought my car 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid from a non-Toyota dealership last year August. And few months later I started noticing sqeezing noise and since last few months I have noticed a tapping noise whenever I apply break even when car is in stationary. I took car to Toyota dealership and they said it seems to be an actuator problem and needs to investigated in detail. I feel it is very dangerous to drive the car as whenever I apply breaks I hear tapping noise. I have also seen post related to same problem from many customers.

49 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/01/2018

My brakes began making a lot of noise while parked or stationary. The local Toyota dealer diagnosed the malfunction as the brake actuary assembly. I did some research and it turns out this is a recognized problem with 2006-7 Toyota Highlander Hybrids and in response Toyota extended the warranty period until December 2017 to compensate. However, I wasn't aware of this defect until recently, just a few months after the end of the extended warranty period. Why wasn't a recall issued for something as important to safety as the brakes?.

50 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/18/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. While driving 35 mph, the brake pedal pulsated. Also, the brake malfunction, abs, bsb, check brake system, and emergency brake warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to Toyota of clermont (16851 state road 50, clermont, FL 34711) where it was diagnosed that the brake actuator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and referred the contact to NHTSA. The failure mileage was 141,565.

51 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/05/2018

I purchased a 2006 Highlander Hybrid fwd in Feb 2018 from hercules police department. Fairly often when I apply the brakes at lower speeds 20-30mph , the SUV surges forward like the brakes have released for a moment and then have reapplied. It is dangerous and very disconcerting in close traffic or when going around a corner or circle. Although I have managed not to have a collision, I have come pretty close when driving with a reasonable distance from the car in front. I have described it to Toyota, which they denies there is any problem since there is no recall was done. I have had it diagnosed without any problem with the brakes being identified. This is a problem that is noted by many people on the internet who describe the exact problem with my model as well as other hybrids manufactured by Toyota. It is a defect that could cause a serious accident if emergency braking is necessary, which at some point we all need to do to be safe on the road. Please address this with Toyota.

52 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

53 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/15/2018

Abs, vsc lights came on while on a bridge on at highway at 70 mph; pulled over safely to check function; brakes still worked, abs did not; took to a dealer next day; dealer advised the abs accumulator was defective and other error codes (over power) indicated a leak in the abs network. Dealer advised parts alone would exceed 4800 usd not including labor.

54 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/10/2018

Brake actuator assembly is malfunctioning, and is causing the vehicle charging system light to activate which in turn does not allow you to start the vehicle. I was told that if I was to continue driving with the malfunction, I could lose my breaking system while driving. Toyota is aware of this problem, and refuses to do a recall on my vehicle. The cost to repair is over $2100. Faulty braking system should be a priority for Toyota.

55 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/02/2018

I was pregnant and driving with 2 small children when the lights on my dashboard came on about vsc and a loud ringing happened and then I tried to brake at the stop light and they were so difficult to push I barely stopped in time to avoid an accident. Was told it was the abs system and that Toyota is aware of this but put stipulations on an extended warranty rather than recall so it's too late for most to get fixed and be covered. This is a huge safety issue and expensive fix Toyota needs to stand behind.

56 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/12/2018

Vehicle stability control warning light came on. Nothing in manual about it. Called Toyota dealer said no rush to bring it in. Snowstorm delayed me. Went in - told dangerous to drive. Have to replace the automatic braking actuator - part costs $1800 and 3 hours labor - around $2400 - the car only has 130k on it. Brake was slipping day I got to the dealer unless I pressed harder than normal.

57 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/12/2018

Abs module went out during ice storm making car unsafe to drive. Looking online, I see that this has been a fairly common problem with this year and model of my particular car. I was lucky that I live in houston which rarely has icy roads.

58 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/08/2018

I was on highway the light( brake vsc abs. . ) then I heard noise I try to push the break didn't stop and I am glad that I manage to slow it down. I take it to mechanic and he told me this because some kind of abs brake accumulator and related issues. There have been a couple instances where I'm pressing the brake pedal and it starts to slow down, then feels like the brakes release, then grab again slowing the vehicle to a stop. I've almost crashed a couple times. I've heard and read of many people having the same issue with this system and some have even had accidents due to this. To me, I dont have $4000 to fix the problem and rigt know I am student and I dont know what to do, it should be recall. Also, when turning the key to on, the accumulator has started making a loud buzzing noise for 10-15 seconds. Please, please consider this system for immediate recall.

59 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

When applying the brake pedal the car produces a chirping / crunch noise and it slips a tad. This happens when the car is on or off, moving or stopped. On a recent service visit, the dealer said that it's likely the brake actuator and to just drive with it until it produces an error code. Online, I read that Toyota had created an "extended warranty for this issue, but would only fix it if it produced an error code. That "extended warranty" is now passed and my car still hasn't produced the code. This has got to be a safety issue.

60 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/22/2017

Brakes stopped working with lights coming on requesting to take it to dealership. Dealership says it is the abs actuator which is malfunctioning and requesting me to replace it at 3500$. Toyota has been making this part defective and has been recalling this for similar model years. 2007 has a recall. 2008 camry hybrid has a recall. They should just recall this part across the board.

61 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/14/2017

3 weeks after we purchased our 2008 Highlander Hybrid with only 115,000 miles on it, the whole dashboard lit up with warning lights. The lights indicated that the abs had malfunctioned. It said to pull over and get it checked by the Toyota dealership immediately. We took it to the dealership and were told that there was an abnormal leak in the accumulator and that it will cost $4693. 46 to repair. This is after we had just purchased the vehicle for $15,000. We are a family with 6 kids and obviously do not have that kind of money. We continued driving the highlander until it became completely unsafe. The brakes stopped working while I was driving it one day with my kids. The brakes would go all the way to the floor and barely even stopped me. I managed to make it home without being in a wreck, but we feel that it is totally unsafe to drive. It is the only vehicle that we have to transport all of our family, and we aren't sure what to do. My husband has researched and discovered that the abs has been recalled in the 2006 and 2007 Toyota highlanders. We have also discovered that there are numerous complaints similar to ours with the 2008 highlander. We really hope that you consider the safety issue that is at stake with the brakes going out in these vehicles. This part needs to be recalled and this issue needs to be taken care of to ensure the safety of many americans.

62 Service Brakes problem of the 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/27/2017

Brake actuator assembly enhancer/abs module went out in 11/2017. Toyota had a warranty enhancement on this that ended in 12/31/2017. This went out in 11/2017, but was not diagnosed at a Toyota service department, but the svc dept was called about it. . It was diagnosed at midas. A case was opened with Toyota on 1/8/2018. Toyota is saying they will not honor the warranty because it is past the 12/31/2017 date. This is a known issue with these type of vehicles and should be fixed by Toyota.

63 Service Brakes problem of the 2010 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/25/2017

I was driving to pick up my son when a brake malfunction warning light came on indicating a problem with abs system. After picking up my son I went directly to the dealer and the found the problem was given by code c1391, a brake accumulator vacuum leak. Was told vehicle was unsafe to drive without repair, internal pressure loss could prevent car from stopping in a panic situation. Although it appears this is covered by warranty extension for some model years of highlander, camy and prius, Toyota would not extend same courtesy to me, nor was dealer able to offer me a goodwill adjustment. Pump assembly and actuator assembly parts and repair cost about $5300. 00. Vehicle was purchased new from the dealer, had all recommended and necessary maintenance at dealer on dealer schedule.

64 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/10/2017

I was driving in 295 I hearing a sound coming from the daskboard and a light appeared stated need to check abs break system by dealer. I said to myself I'll have it check when I got home. I was doing 65 miles per hour, I was pressing break there were no break, pump the break several times, no break, I pressed the emergency break and thanks to the lord the car slow down and eventually stop. Apparently dealer asked me $5,500. To fix this issue and I don't have this type of money, and I'm still making payment on this vehicle can't even drive; I believe this type of issue should be a recall. I need help please!!!!! ribertm@yahoo. Com.

65 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/22/2017

Driving approximately 30k / hr on September 22, around 6pm. Little traffic as the road leads deep to the country. No rain, great visibility. We'd just stopped to follow someone to a remote location and had not gotten out of the car at that time as the friend came to the driver's side door. A few minutes later, an alarm sounded and the indicator displayed "brake malfunction". The brakes were not working and at the same moment, smoke began filling the vehicle from the front vents. At this time you could also see small flames from the front hood of the vehicle. We immediately exited the car once it came to a complete stop (forced to park position). Flames could be seen falling from the passenger side front end. My husband shut off the vehicle. We ran around a ned in the road to get to safety. Within minutes (5-7 max) the car was engulfed in flames. The gentleman we were following turned around to see where we were when he realized that the car was in flames. Toyota ces has been contacted as we were hoping for help with an investigation. We are a military family, stationed overseas. The vehicle was shipped here 2. 5 years ago at government expense once we received new orders. Toyota has been less than accommodating with providing any information. This happened with little time to get to safety. My hope is information can be gathered from other consumers that may have experienced similar situations. Lives could potentially be saved if we work together to get facts documented. Stateside number provided. We can be reached at +34 642 47 0598.

67 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/02/2017

In August of 2017 we were driving our 20088 Toyota Highlander Hybrid and all of sudden the display warned of abs vsc malfunction and to pull over or take car to nearest dealer, the brake pedals lost compression or pressure and the brake was not working hardly. Took to the mechanic shop that has been doing the regular maintenance, they performed diagnostics and stated abs module needed to be replaced. They advise car was not safe to drive. Checked this website and carcomplaints to see many other users same issue, contacted Toyota, they stated they had no recalls, its out of warranty, we would have to pay the $4000 to have fixed, we paid for the repair out of pocket, which was a financial hit for us. Contacted Toyota today about reimbursement for repair cost, said they dont have it recalled or a campaign for the issue, I stated this website with the complaints and other sites, was basically told until a recall is on the issue, wouldnt be refunded.

68 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/02/2017

Brake actuator was making a lot of noises starting in 8/2017 when I bought the car. Actuator problem lights came on in 3/2018, I don't know if they came on before I owned car. When I took car into dealer on 9/8/2017 they told me noise was normal and there was no problems with brakes. On 4/2/2018 vsc/abs/brake/traction lights came on and Toyota told me I had to replace brake actuator. I opened case # 1804022826 with Toyota who told me I was responsible to pay for repair. Thousands of dollars later I have a new brake actuator that doesn't make any sounds at all.
