1 Equipment problem of the 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/11/2022

2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid- emailed forwarded from u. S. Senator blackburn's office. Consumer states: "I am writing to let you know that as a dedicated Toyota customer for over 35 years and purchased over 8 vehicles, I am very disappointed with the lack of any customer service associated with the purchase of a 2023 Highlander Hybrid in November 2022. It is now June 2023 and I still have only one key fob for my vehicle. I hear that there is a computer chip shortage yet every 2023 Highlander Hybrid that has been delivered in USA since January 2023 has received both fobs. They get keys immediately yet we have waited over 6 moths and still waiting. The customer advocates at Toyota keep saying a different date for availability. Originally it was Feb/March and then may/June. The latest is now end of summer. Why? I am very disappointed with Toyota and their handling of this issue. Why can’t we get our extra fob. I am so disappointed with the lack of customer care for a loyal customer. Please help me. ".

3 Equipment problem of the 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/18/2019

0 miles, brand new, brought it home and found the voice prompts and navigation system did not work, so you have to look at the map and take your eyes off of the road in order to find the direction to where you're going. Brought it in to the shop the next day, was given a loaner, and they "updated" the car's ciomputer. It worked until you turned the car off, and once again, the navigation system would no work, and there were no voice prompts whatsoever to help the driver keep "eyes on the road" while figuring out how to navigate the on board menu that was silent. Also, the "easy speak" function didn't work, so if you have a baby in the second or third row, the bay may not hear you trying to assess what is wrong. No turn-byturn guidance working. No.

8 Equipment problem of the 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/19/2018

My Toyota highlander limited platinum hybrid navigation system vehicle voice command doesn't work on initial start up of the vehicle. The navigation system does accept driver voice commands and does set up the navigation and provides the driver with on screen driving directions but the vehicle voice command doesn't work and there are no turn by turn voice instructions. (note: there is a work around and that is to turn off the vehicle immediately and restart the system . . . Then voice command operates properly). My safety concern unless I anticipate using the navigation system and restart the vehicle a second time I will not get turn by turn voice commands from the vehicles navigation system. Since the navigation system responds to the drivers commands I do get on screen direction (w/o voice command) and find myself watching the screen for directions rather that the traffic in front of me. To date I have not had an accident but have had a couple of close calls in urban driving situation when I'm missing vehicle turn by turn voice commands. I see this as a vehicle defect that will be causing serious safety issues as the number of these vehicles increase on the road*. I have made numerous trips to the dealership and contacted Toyota customer support a number of times. At this time it is an issue theoretically being worked by Toyota with no known ecd. *I've googled numerous highlander forums and found owners of the 2019 hybrid limited platinum all over the country have this similar issue and have received the same response from Toyota. It's only a matter of time that someone watching their navigation screen because they weren't getting turn by turn voice commands from the vehicle will cause a serious accident or run over a pedestrian. Please help us 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid limited platinum owners resolve this serious safety issue. Thks.

12 Equipment problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/15/2018

While driving 40 mph, my dashboard lit up with brake brake malfunction, abs chevk abs, and check vsc system. All dash lights lit up also. Drove to the repair shop and had codes run. No codes were present. This is related to the c1391 code that has a recall on 06&07 highlanders, and 08 camys. The front right of the engine is making a clicking sound every 20 seconds from the brake stabilizer. Just prior to this for the last 2 weeks, the vehicle has had difficulty obtaining a ready light. Battery has been pulled and bench tested, and all connections were checked. It would appear that in the last two months many 08 owners are presenting with this problem, with a range of proposed repair expense from $3,300 to $6,500. Seeing as this is a known problem with the 08 camry, resulting in brake failure in both camry's and highlander, this ought to be a recall for both vehicles.

13 Equipment problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/22/2017

Driving approximately 30k / hr on September 22, around 6pm. Little traffic as the road leads deep to the country. No rain, great visibility. We'd just stopped to follow someone to a remote location and had not gotten out of the car at that time as the friend came to the driver's side door. A few minutes later, an alarm sounded and the indicator displayed "brake malfunction". The brakes were not working and at the same moment, smoke began filling the vehicle from the front vents. At this time you could also see small flames from the front hood of the vehicle. We immediately exited the car once it came to a complete stop (forced to park position). Flames could be seen falling from the passenger side front end. My husband shut off the vehicle. We ran around a ned in the road to get to safety. Within minutes (5-7 max) the car was engulfed in flames. The gentleman we were following turned around to see where we were when he realized that the car was in flames. Toyota ces has been contacted as we were hoping for help with an investigation. We are a military family, stationed overseas. The vehicle was shipped here 2. 5 years ago at government expense once we received new orders. Toyota has been less than accommodating with providing any information. This happened with little time to get to safety. My hope is information can be gathered from other consumers that may have experienced similar situations. Lives could potentially be saved if we work together to get facts documented. Stateside number provided. We can be reached at +34 642 47 0598.

16 Equipment problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/28/2017

I was driving my car and when I brake to slow down I heard a chime and a check vcs system warning came with abs , brake and slip indicator ,master warning light and electronic controlled brake system warning light came on too. I have found that in 2013 there was a safery recall dlf(d2f) on certain highlander hv 2006-2010.

17 Equipment problem of the 2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/03/2017

While braking to stop car in a school pick up line, warning lights and messages began flashing. Warning lights stated brake malfunction, abs system etc. Dealer ran diagnostic, stated there is an internal leak of brake actuator, repair costs $5500. Lights were reset and 2 weeks later while driving lights and warnings came back on. Toyota has recall for 2006 and 2007 but not 2009.

18 Equipment problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/29/2017

I am about to purchase an 06 Toyota highlander 4x4 hybrid. I received information that the 06 Toyota Highlander Hybrid inverter has serious problems, and that the cost to fully repair this problem is huge. I would like to protect myself from potential problems (like this) by not purchasing any such vehicle. I would also like to know (if this issue is valid) whether dealerships have the ability to be informed of any such vehicle problems, before they sell it on their lot?.

19 Equipment problem of the 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/18/2017

The vehicle is designed to continue to charge the batteries even after the key is no longer in the proximity of the vehicle. This could result in a safety issue when the vehicle is parked in a garage - generating CO and also potentially overheating. Propose the vehicle control logic will shutdown the vehicle after a designated period following the key not being in proximity. (it makes little sense for the vehicle to continue to operate if it has been stationary for an extended period of time without the key in proximity). Suitable logic could be installed for the driver to override if required (in the case of a breakdown, stranded in inclement weather etc. ).

21 Equipment problem of the 2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/21/2016

I arrive at a parking lot on flower avenue strip driving slowly into a parking space in front of a clinic, at a very low speed, when the car suddenly accelerated--by the time I hit the brakes attempting to stop, it was in the office of of maternal and child care, unstoppable--fortunately, it was on a Sunday afternoon and there were no employees or patients in the reception area of the office. . . Sudden acceleration was the cause of this accident. This car must be recalled---I took it to koons Toyota in vienna, virginia-- where I bought it last October--a 2009 Toyota highlander. . .

22 Equipment problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/10/2016

Failed abs brake accuator assembly. This is a known issue and Toyota has paid for camry owners to have theirs fixed free of charge. The dealer wants $3800 to replace mine. With as many complaints as there are out there coupled with the danger involved with this part failing there should be a recall. It caused us to very nearly have an accident due to loss of braking power. I hope Toyota doesnt wait for someobe to be killed before they act on this.

23 Equipment problem of the 2010 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/20/2015

Door locks on passenger front and rear, driver front and rear, have all been replaced or repaired at least twice due to malfunctions. As of December 2015, the locks are failing again for a third time, creating a safety hazard. Locks don't work. They will either stay locked, failing to open, or now, they will not lock at all. This is an ongoing problem that has never been fixed properly. Keeps recurring.

24 Equipment problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/08/2015

After the vehicle is driven to a stop and turned off while still in drive, reverse or neutal, there is no audible or visual warning that the car is not in safely in park. When you take your foot off the brake pedal, the car will roll away if it's on an incline.

25 Equipment problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Consumer stated he was rear ended by a drunk driver.

The back-up camera has started shown more of the bumper. . . It has started pointing more to it. The camera did not see loose. But I see the more bumper on the screen. 28 Equipment problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/15/2014

While decelerating to turn into our drive way the vehicle rapidly accelerated. We were able to get it stopped by using the brakes, ending up in the yard/sidewalk. There were approximately 10 feet of skid marks. The engine was racing while the brakes were being applied. The floor mat was not involved. The increased engine rpm was not initiated nor controllable by the operator. This was truly an uncontrolled run away that could have been life threatening.

29 Equipment problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/26/2014

Vehicle a ran a red light while being distracted by putting on her shoe and ran a red light at the intersection. Vehicle b crashed into the side of the vehicle a and vehicle b has body damage to front bumper fenders and hood and body rails. Vehicle b was totaled out by the insurance CO. No air bags deployed in neither vehicle. Mileage was around 25-30 miles per hour and no one was seriously hurt. Why have air bags for safety if they do not deploy? need stiffer penalties for distracted driving, driver a was cited for running the red light. I was also told by the insurance company that industry took out body frames to cut gas mileage. Where is the safety when lives are at risk?.

30 Equipment problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/14/2014

Toyota heater control unit has misfunctioned so that temperature control no longer works and now airbag, ac switch, rear defroster, and vent control no longer working. Entire unit needs to be replaced. Unfixed this has potential for causing accidents or injuries.

31 Equipment problem of the 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/09/2014

I was driving down the road and lost power of my vehicle. Toyota dealership said it was my #6 coil but I have a feeling it was the inverter with everything that happened to it. I googled it and everything that happened was exactly what happeneds when the inverter goes on the vehicle. I don't really trust them.

32 Equipment problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/14/2013

The car just stopped moving - engine was running & all systems were on. The warning systems starting displaying the following messages: check hybrid system, check vsc system, check brake system, check 4wd system. The car had no 'limp' mode, and I was fortunate enough to coast to a parking space. Prior to this the car was running fine with no signs of failure. I had it towed to the shop and was told the hybrid inverter had gone out. Upon researching this it appears to be a common problem with the highlander's, and there was a recall on the 2006/07 models. I purchased in Jan of 2008, and by VIN research it appears my vechicle came from the same manufacturing facility as the recalled models. Also, searching on-line I found several incidents of this now in the 2008 models. I feel fortunate that I was not on the freeway, as it appears this can happen anywhere at any speed. I find it very sad that Toyota knows this hazard exists and still is not notifying or replacing these parts that they know are defective (not only not replacing, but asking consumers to pay 10k plus to repair).

33 Equipment problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

Driver's side sun visor unexpectedly dropped down. Occurred while driving, dangerously obscuring visibility. Have not been able to remedy, it just hangs down. Either have to duck down while driving to see or hold up visor with hand that should be on steering wheel. Have gathered a number of quotes to repair ranging from $236 to $425. Ridiculously expensive to repair, and I believe, should be a recall item as I learned through research, it is a very common problem.

34 Equipment problem of the 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/02/2013

Driving approximately 65 mph on a busy southern California freeway when I hear a popping sound and my car died. Was in the fast lane and had to move over to the right shoulder. Dangerous!!! could have gotten in a accident, but made it ok. Had to have the car towed. Was told that the hybrid inverter needed replacing. Never knew that Toyota was having a problem with the inverter, and have now been told that there was a recall on some 2007's, but my VIN number was not included in the recall and therefore not covered. Cost to replace inverter $9,000 to $11,000. Why wasn't my car included in the recall!! very obvious that the recall should have gone further to include mine. My problem is the same as everyone else is having. Please consider extending the recall.

35 Equipment problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/16/2013

My wife and three small kids were on the way to the airport, car just shut off while we were in motion driving on a 40mph street. Display says check hybrid system. Luckily we did not get hit and were able to swirve to side of road (although it was all the way from the middle lane to right side of road) as it is a very busy street, luckily there was no car in the right lane at the time of incident. The dealer says it is an hybrid inverter failure. I own a 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid and I think this part needs to be recalled like the models from 2006 and 2007, from all the complaints I am seeing not only on this website, but all over the internet. Someone should take action before someone gets hurt badly. Thanks.
