I was driving from maryland back home to new jersey and the vehicle could not accelerate or move at all when in gears. The engine was on, however the car stopped moving. I was on backroads with low visibility so neighbors and others came out immediately to push the car off the road so it would not create an accident. It was towed to the dealership and was told that it was a faulty inverter on the hybrid system. After researching, I found that the previous years models were recalled, however 2008 model was not. But as I do the research, it appears that numerous buyers of this model have had the same issue.

Hybrid inverter failure. Accelerating from stoplight to enter highway ramp. Loud bang and all lights on dash came on. Engine continued running but no propulsion. Had it towed to dealer and informed it was a hybrid inverter failure, and would cost $10,000 to repair. We are now looking at class action lawsuits.

The car completely shut off when driving, without any warning! luckily, the driver was not rear- ended!! the car was towed to Toyota where we were told that the inverter needs to be replaced for $9000! the car is in otherwise great shape and has been serviced at Toyota regularly . The last check up was last month at 118,000 miles! this is exactly the same problem reported for the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, which was recalled.

Keyless fob resulted in car being left on all night in enclosed garage. The design defect in not automatically turning the engine off when the fob leaves the immediate area is well-known. The additional problem in the Toyota Highlander Hybrid is that the green power light goes on when you turn off the car, leading the driver to believe that the power is now on, when in fact it is off. The driver then steps on the brake and presses power again, thinking that they are now turning the car off because the power button is no longer green. The hybrid engine is silent when the car starts, so the driver leaves the area with the fob thinking the car is off, when in fact it is on all night in a closed garage, as happened with us.

First event-pulling into a parking space-applied the brake-car accelerated and went over the bumper guard. Ongoing issue-when applying the brake and hitting a bump in the road at the same time, the car lunges forward and the brake appears to fail. Reported to dealer-said it was possibly the abs brake system. Have had the brakes checked numerous times with no trouble found.

Rear ended another car at the end of a ramp. Severe damage to other car. I wondered at the time why the air bag did not go off, even though my bumper and hood was damaged. But, police said it was probably because I went under the smaller car? I didn't question his judgement, but now that I hear of so many other Toyota car airbags not going off, I think there is a serious problem and it should be investigated.
