Toyota Land Cruiser owners have reported 17 problems related to power train (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota Land Cruiser based on all problems reported for the Land Cruiser.
The owner reports that at slow, consistent speeds [approx. 1–10 mph] on an incline, including steep paved city roads and well-maintained alpine roads, the transmission/ev temperature increases quickly. Under similar low-speed inclines where speed fluctuates [approx. 1–25 mph], temperatures rise rapidly and result in overheating. This occurs both on-road and off-road. Once the transmission exceeds normal operating temperatures, reverse, 1st & 2nd gears exhibit abnormally harsh engagement, often with an audible thud and a physical impact felt by the driver and passengers. Multiple diagnostic attempts have been made at the dealership level. The only confirmed finding was elevated transmission temperatures. Because the transmission has not fully failed, no diagnostic fault codes are stored and no warnings have been logged by the vehicle, including the overheating transmission alert, no repair or corrective action has been offered. The only recommendation has been to operate the transmission manually and use 4l during slow-speed driving. Attempts were also made at the corporate level, which resulted only in redirection back to the dealership with the same workaround having been advised. When the owner asked whether 4l should be used during stop-go traffic on an incline while on a freeway, a Toyota representative confirmed that it should. This guidance is considered misinformation, as it contradicts Toyota’s 4wd user manual and could result in catastrophic engine and transmission damage. The owner has remained in communication with the dealership; however, no meaningful efforts have been made to resolve the issue. As Toyota has stated there is no available fix, the owner has been advised to pursue arbitration.

Was told the electric pump housed within the transmission failed and is not sold separately so I need a whole new transmission. No eta on when that may actually happen. When I shifted from park into reverse, neutral and drive and then back into park I get a horrible screeching sound and was told that the truck is not safe to drive.

The transmission slams hard into gear when accelerating.
2018 Toyota landcruiser. Potential vehicle crash, injury, damage, loss of value, reduced lifespan & reliabilty. Issue #1 - 2-3 times a month I experience shift shock. The transmission hesitates shifting up between 1->2 gear or down 2->1 gear at less than 15 mph. Depending how far you push the accelerator to force it to shift into gear, the car can shift into gear after hesitating so hard it feels like the vehicle was hit from behind. Dealer checked for codes and nothing was recorded despite being an anomalous event and Toyota having a history of shift shock. 2016-2017 landcruiser and issued a TSB [xxx] contacted Toyota to report the issue and was told they have not received any reports for my year or later, which is likely untrue. If the ecu/tcu was coded to log shift shock I think they’d have a lot of reports. Fyi Toyota is having similar issues with the 2025 Lexus gx550. Issue #2 - shift hesitation of 1-2 seconds before shift shock may result in a crash or injury. Normally experience shift shock slowing down close to a stop in left turn lane to cross oncoming traffic. The pause results in a delay of acceleration that may result in a crash causing injury and damage to property. Transmission hesitation/shift shock can also occur slowing down for a red light changing to green where you almost come to a stop then need to accelerate suddenly. The hesitation may result in the vehicle being rear ended due to loss of speed/control. Issue #3 - shift shock could also result in a crash or loss of control dealing with slippery conditions caused by rain, snow, ice. I live in colorado and experience all 3. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

On this vehicle, whenever 4 low is selected, or in 4 high (normal driving mode) any off-road driving mode is chosen, a warning appears on the digital instrument cluster stating "vsc turned off pre-collision brake system unavailable". While this warning is up, no other instrument cluster functions can be accessed. Hitting the button to dismiss this warning will only make it go away for five seconds, then it will repeat and once again draw the driver's attention off the road and to the instrument cluster. It serves as a constant distraction and impediment in the most difficult driving conditions. The only way to make it not reappear every 5 seconds is to stop, go into the safety items menus, and disable pre-collision braking which then unnecessarily reduces the safety of the vehicle once it is back in a normal driving mode. This waring which repeats every five seconds must be a software bug, other similar warnings do not return once dismissed.
The Land Cruiser suddenly became sluggish and stopped itself with no input to the accelerator or brakes upon pulling into a parking spot. A center differential lock indicator with a flashing red lock was on the dashboard. Driver attempts of stopping and restarting vehicle and pushing the center differential lock control button did nothing. Vehicle was towed to the selling dealer and the problem was reproducible and issue was not resolved. After diagnostic review with Toyota corporate technician assistance, a diagnosis of “faulty transfer case actuator” was concluded after one week in the service department.
My brand new Land Cruiser has random extremely hard downshifts when coming to a stop. It is so jolting that it lunges the car forward and could potentially cause me to rear end someone. It doesn’t happen every time I come to a stop but it does seem that coming to a quick stop such as emergency braking or braking after faster driving makes it more likely to happen. There are no warning lights on the dash and I haven’t had it checked out by Toyota because I am quite positive they will tell me nothing is wrong because they probably won’t be able to replicate it on their quick test drive. I am sick of these issues on new cars that are unable to be replicated by technicians. This is a serious safety issue.
2024 Land Cruiser, purchased in July, 2024 has had 4 random hard downshifts when coming to a stop and then lunges forward as when a driver downshifts harshly in a manual car (keeping in mind that the Land Cruiser is an automatic and the driver is not intentionally down shifting). On the 4th occurance, I nearly rear ended a car. Fist occurance at approximately 250 miles and last occurance at approximately 1,200 miles. The car was taken to a local dealership on 11/04/24 but the dealership refused to further evaluate as Toyota headquarters informed them that the vehicle is sheduled to be evaluted by a Toyota regional technician. On 11/12/24, the Toyota regional technician did not replicate the safety concern per the dealership and it was advised to go pick up the car. As of 11/18, the car remains in the local dealership due to my safety concerns. Toyota headquarters has not advised me or dealership on the next steps. No warning lights on the dash are present and Toyota does not consider this a safety issue as it has not been replicated. Concern of the car automatically braking without objects in front has been brought up to Toyota as well.
The vehicle hesitates on flat roads at steady speed. The hesitation is noticable especially at around 25mph. The hesitation seems to be strong with the air conditioning on, and while in drive. When the gear is manually selected and the air conditioning is off, the hesitation is less noticeable. Hesitation is particularly strong and erratic when the engine and transmission are cold and the vehicle is going up a a steady incline with a gradual acceleration.
The contact owns a 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser. The contact stated that while on an incline, after shifting the gear shifter to the drive, the vehicle had rolled backwards. Additionally, while driving approximately 35 mph, the parking assist warning light illuminated, and the parking overview camera activated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. There was no fault found with the vehicle. The contact stated that the same failure had occurred with a 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 4,000.
Transmission failure at 2,600 mi under low speed. The vehicle lost momentum and revved before catching gear causing an intense jerk feeling like it had been rear-ended. Immediately following the jolt multiple errors were displayed across the dash including drive-start control malfunction, pksb system malfunction, hybrid system malfunction, drcc & pcs system malfunction screens along with orange indicators for the brake system warning, driving assist, drcc & pcs. I was able to drive the vehicle in limp mode, as the transmission wouldn't shift up or down, to my local dealer who was able to verify multiple pressure control solenoid error codes. After conferring with Toyota engineering, they recommended a full transmission and torque converter replacement. Parts aren't readily available and the repair is expected to take between 4-8 weeks as they wait for new parts to come off the assembly line. The dealership has provided me with a loaner vehicle and all work is covered under warranty.
Throttle accelerates on its own when cold. This especially happens when vehicle has not fully warmed up in weather below freezing. I will let off the throttle and vehicle will continue to accelerate for several seconds before seemingly getting unstuck. There is no issue with throttle cable, and throttle body has been cleaned since the onset, which changed nothing.

While driving with my 2 children on a city street, the entire car shut down including all power steering and brakes. There were no advance warning signs or noises until a minute before it happened. Fortunately, I was able to pull over without causing an accident. Had I been on the interstate and unable to pull over, it would have created a major accident and safety issue. The vehicle was towed to closest dealer where they determined the spring valve in cylinder 5 had broken in half and dropped into the combustion chamber, causing the engine to seize. After doing research on 2013-2014 Toyota tacoma and similar Lexus vehicles it appears there were recalls due to the exact same issue occurring where the spring was defective due to an issue by a spring supplier/manufacturing. Additionally, the 2013-2014 landcruiser (same year) also had a recall for this problem outside of the u. S. Since only 3,000 landcruisers were sold in the u. S. In 2014, it is very important that the NHTSA examines this incident closely (as compared to 155,000 tacoma's sold the same year which did have the recall) . I strongly believe the 2014 landcruisers have the same defective spring valve issue as the tacoma but the ratio is off skew and not reported yet. This is a major safety issue for landcruisers on the road!!! please research.

The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser. The contact stated that the engine and service traction warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the neutral safety switch, manual shaft valve, sealed type t oil, hexagon nut, dex 3 transmission fluid, washer/spring were replaced. The remedy failed to repair the vehicle and the failure recurred. The engine stalled on the highway while driving at an unknown speed. The vehicle was able to be restarted after numerous attempts, but the engine stalled again. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the throttle body assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 243,000. .

2013 Toyota Land Cruiser. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle acceleration problems. The consumer stated since the purchase date, he encountered a significant and dangerous problem with regard to the accelerator/throttle mechanism. On a sporadic basis, when attempting to accelerate from a low speed to high speed, such as, merging into a traffic lane, there was a lack of response (similar to a stalling sensation). On two occasions, the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but they were unable to identify the problem.

My husband and I own a 2007 Toyota landcruiser. It has 46,000 miles on it. We have taken it in for service on several occasions as the front end of the car will drop down, the vsc and traction control light come on, and the car is uncontrollable to drive. This has happened 5 times, all at completely random times. The first time it happened was at 4,900 miles. One time it happened and we driving 75 mph down hwy 5. Thank goodness we were driving on a straight road or no telling what could of happened. Another time the suspension collapsed and a front axle broke. The axle was repaired, but the source of the problem was not found. This last time it happened was on 2-22-10. I drove it immediately over to chuck patterson Toyota in chico, CA. They put it on their computer to test it and we were told they had no code to fix it. They told us to call Toyota and they would do the same to try and remedy the problem. After more then a week of getting the run around they told us we needed to pick up our car as they can not fix the it!!! on top of this recurring problem we are on our 3rd set of tires, two of which have been rated 50,000 mile. We have applied for arbitration. We are completely dissatisfied with chuck patterson Toyota and Toyota. We feel Toyota is ignoring our case. We cannot believe we were asked to come get our vehicle and it would be dealt with then (the 6th time) . We feel the vehicle is unsafe for our family to drive. In addition, because of the service records and the faulty suspension being recorded numerous times, we cannot sell or trade the vehicle with a good conscience knowing that the suspension could collapse at any given time!!.
