Toyota Matrix owners have reported 9 problems related to brake disc pads (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Numerous times while driving, regardless of speed (sometimes on the highway at 75 mph, others when pulling out from a stop to cross a busy intersection), the vehicle seizes and I lose control of all acceleration and braking mechanisms, while the engine revs and the car slows to almost total stop, with my only hope of swerving into a ditch to avoid being rear ended by the cars and massive mac trucks behind my vehicle, impossible to avoid colliding on the narrow steep rural roads. In the course of one mile, today specifically, the vehicle convulsed and seized four separate occasions, where I could only turn my blinker on and hope people could go around me. I long considered this issue related to slippery road conditions, because that's what it feels like, though experiencing the terror of losing complete control on a hot sunny, dry day last summer put the severity of this issue into perspective- the driver needs to be in control of the vehicle and the full operator of every function to prevent the vehicle from becoming a deadly weapon. This vehicle inhibits my ability to prevent harm. In trying to diagnose this issue, I have spent tens of thousands of dollars, and the vehicle still remains unsafe. On 4/9/18, I spent $2,065. 29 to replace wheel bearings for the second time in under a year and a half, as well as serviced the emergency break, purchased new tires yet again, and rebuilt the entire transmission. Back on 11/20/17, the vehicle received brand new lf wheel bearing and brand new spark plugs for $535. 29 to cure the power issue, to no avail. Only 8 months earlier on 3/30/17, I spent in excess of $1200 to service the struts, shocks, rear brakes, break pads, rodars, brake callipers, and rear emergency break, and still the issue persisted. The engine, wheels, and brakes of this 2007 Toyota Matrix continue to impede my ability to keep the people on the road safe.

Brakes are scrubbing harshly when weather is damp. Had it inspected at leith Toyota in raleigh,nc and was told that was normal for this car. Two months ago in wet cold high altitude there was extreme scrubbing of front wheel brakes, again was inspected and told that brakes were good and would probably need new pads at next inspection. This scrubbing started about 6-8 months after we purchased it new.

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota corolla Matrix. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, a knocking sound emitted from the front end of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for a diagnosis. The technician diagnosed that the brake pads and tires needed to be replaced. The failure recurred multiple times. The dealer failed to further service the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure was 59,632.
On may 28th, while pulling into my driveway as I've done with my 2008 Matrix hundreds of times, the brakes failed and my car ran into my house. I could feel the abs firing, but the car failed to slow down. I have a short driveway, about a car and a half in length, and it is downhill. The approach to the driveway has me turning and braking while going over the bump of the curb. To add to that, it was raining the day this happened. Fortunately, my approach was rather slow and no one was injured. My car sustained some minor damage, and my garage sustained more damage from the force of the impact. Under the advisement of my auto insurance agency, I had the car towed to the Toyota dealership for inspection. They informed me that they ran a complete diagnostic, and all of the systems were running fine. They reported to me that the brake pads were in good condition, and there were no hot spots. From their perspective, the car seemed fine. I advised them that while the diagnostics reported the car as being fine, the inability for the car to brake coming into my driveway, and the damage sustained, leaves me needing a better answer than that. They told me that when it next rained that I could come in and drive the car with one of their technicians to try and re-create the issue. It has been several weeks, and we have not had the proper weather conditions when they have been open and I have been able to get off work and get over there with our one remaining car. When I spoke to the dealer rep on Monday, he re-iterated how their software diagnostic showed the car was operating fine. I asked him how then the 2010 prius had a software update to correct a braking issue. He said that the prius situation was complicated, brought on by the combination of turning, going over a bump and braking at the same time. I told him that was what happened during my accident. There was silence, and a repeat statement that I could come in and test the vehicle with their tech.

I own a 2003 Matrix xr000 with 53000 miles. I had the front pads and rotors turned at 33000 miles by Toyota. Last month I felt the steering wheel shaking when applying my brakes at speeds between 40-70 mph. I was told last week by the local Toyota mechanic that both my drums needed replacement. They said that blue specs were identified indicating wear on my drums. I asked what would cause the drums to wear so fast and their reply was normal wear or emergency brake being applied by driver. I asked if anything like this has ever been reported by other drivers and the answer was never. They said they didn't have any replacement parts for the drums because it was not something they have seen before. I spoke to the corporate customer experience representative and was told that this was not a defect and was from normal wear and tear based on the Toyota mechanic analysis. I called another brake specialist and provided him the same information that Toyota diagnosed and they said that they never heard of such a thing that the drums needed replaced at 53k miles in the 15 years he has done business in brakes. The failure and consequences by Toyota not identifying this as a defect in the manufactory causes me to dish out additional funds to fix the defect endured by their product. My question to Toyota: this is 1 in a million odds of happening, isn't it possible that this indeed is a manufactory defect and not customer related? why didn't Toyota identify the problem earlier at the brake inspection serviced at 33k miles?
I advised others not to purchase a Toyota vehicle, the cost paid for Toyota vehicles and poor customer satisfaction warrants a "f" in my book.

Low speed braking vehicle moves either left or right. Several service visits to dealer for brake repairs, replaced abs sensor, brake pads, turned rotors, alignments and tire rotations.
