Service Brakes Problems of Toyota Matrix - part 1

My daughter was driving as usual when she went to apply the brakes about 5 car lengths back and the vehicle accelerated uncontrollably despite braking. Her foot was not on the accelerator, she does not have floor mats that would cause anything to hit the accelerator. This has happened on 5-6 occasions which almost resulted in an accident. She barely got stopped mere inches away from the car in front of her despite braking earlier than normal because she encountered this once already during her trip. No check engine codes, the brakes are good, the car idles high. That is really it. This is a serious issue that seemingly cannot be diagnosed. After doing research to see what the problem may be, I have seen countless complaints of a similar nature. My daughters life is invaluable. This needs to be addressed.

Power steering went out while I was driving and nearly killed myself 149,000 miles on my car and this is super dangerous. From what I read, plenty of other Matrix doing the same. Brakes, windows all went out as well.

I experienced a near death episode last month while driving on the highway. I was going at the flow of traffic in marin county in the inner most lane in the early morning. Suddenly, my steering completely lost control and did not function. It would not stay in my lane and kept erratically moved and swerved into the next lane then back and forth before making multiple 360 spins before hitting the guard rail all the way across the highway. My car brakes wasn't responding when I braked during this horrendous trauma. Thank god nobody hit me during this crazy car went out of control. Recently, I decided to google to see if other 2006 Matrix had the same situation and was stunned to find that there are drivers with the same car models who experienced the same thing ! I was even more stunned to find out about the 2010 Matrix that were in class action suits. I am infuriated and disgusted at the manufacturer for not recallign the vehicles!! they only recalled the 2010 and beyond. What about the older models>??? I almost died in that accident. The company should be ashamed of themslves.

Tl-the contact owns a 2008 Toyota Matrix. The contact stated that when they depress the brake pedal the vehicle shuts off. The contact stated that they have to turn off and on to drive the vehicle. The contact owned a 2009 Toyota Matrix. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph up the mountain and making a turn, the brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle spun causing the vehicle to crash into the mountain. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed. The fire department was at the scene but the contact was not sure that a fire report was filed. The contact sustained minor injuries that required medical attention. The vehicle was totaled and was towed to a impound lot. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

I encountered a flat tire. I pulled the tire off and placed the spare on. The brake drum came off the car and remained housed in the wheel well. After placing the spare on, I drove about 30 miles to my mechanic with no brake drum. I encountered extensive damage to my break system. The vehicle was stationary when changing the tire and in motion when brake system damage was done.

I was backing down my driveway when my car suddenly accelerated-the brakes and steering also went out-I crashed into a bank on one side of the road, then the car swung around and I ended up suspended over a ditch. I was finally able to switch gears and turn the car off.

The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign numbers: 16v340000 (air bags) and 09v338000 (service brakes, hydraulic); however, the parts needed for the repair were not available. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. I was slowly pulling into my garage (in the basement of my house), gradually braking as I had done many times before. I was stopping the vehicle in its usual position when the engine suddenly began racing and the car accelerated forward. It struck some shelves I had against the wall of the garage, crumpling both the shelves and the front of the car's hood. Everything happened so fast at that point that I am not sure just what happened, but I ended up with the car stopped up against the garage wall and the car in park. I believe I threw it into neutral, then applied the brake since it was still moving, then tried to back up, and finally put it into park. The car was declared a total loss by my insurance company. I experienced the same problem of sudden acceleration when stopping several times previously, but none of those incidents caused any damage. In each of those situations I was able to get the car into neutral, stop it with the brake, and continue on my way. In this instance there was not enough space ahead of me to do that successfully. I know that a number of incidents of unintended acceleration of a Toyota Matrix have already been reported for a number of different model years.

The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was not included NHTSA campaign number: 10v384000 (engine and engine cooling). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 98,000. Djr.

Air bag panel light has been coming on and off. The model year is 2005,but the car was made possibly in 2004. The dealer refused to inspect without charge then telling me that recall is for not this model year. The break, when the abs is on in snow conditions, car take too long to stop,keeps kidding. Also engine revs without driver input when stopped or idling. Toyota dealer denied, to be their problem.

I was approaching a stop light and all of a sudden the engine started to accelerate; this has never happened before. I pressed on the brake as hard as I could but the brake wouldn't go all the way down and it was very stiff. Since I was going slow I was able to get the car to stop but the engine was revving as if I had the gas pedal to the floor. I decided to put the car in neutral so it wouldn't accelerate while I was at the stop light (the whole time the engine is revving to its max and the brake was stiff; I also used the hand brake. When the light turned red I placed the car in drive since I had to move and the car wanted to take off so I kept my foot planted on the brake this was at full strength. I was able to get the car into a parking lot and then home an hour later. I was driving the car locally so I was about one mile from home. I have never seen a car do this in my life. I did call Toyota about it and they said it wasn't sudden acceleration and said what do you want from Toyota which I thought was extremely rude. I feel if I was going faster say on the highway I would have lost control of the vehicle.

I was stopped in heavy traffic at about 8am on sept 11, 2014. The car in front of me moved forward so I took my foot off the brake to let my car coast forward. I braked to stop the vehicle and instead of braking, the car accelerated. Instantly thinking I touched the wrong pedal or that the pedal was stuck, I looked down (scrunching toward my right shoulder) to ensure I was pressing firmly on the brake pedal. I braked again and the car shot forward again hitting the car in front of me. I injured my right shoulder trying to prevent the crash, suffered whiplash from the incident and am still hurting today. I am still waiting for the manufacturer to respond to my complaint and review the black box for my vehicle, which is currently housed by my insurance company and may be totaled as a result of this accident.

2009 Toyota Matrix first problem started stalling suddenly in traffic last year, but now very frequently stalls even on highways at high speeds. No warnings. When stalled all lights comes on in dash, including "check engine" light. Completely turn off ignition and restarting is the only way to fix this issue at that time. After restarting the check engine light goes out. Occurred several times in all sorts of weather, but more frequently in hot summer days. Yesterday stalled 4 times within 90 minutes drive. Restart cleared engine computer dealership had difficult time replicating failure. But, advised replacement of the engine control module at a cost of over $1000. Since this year model not recalled by Toyota yet. I do not know how or where to complain so that Toyota acknowledge that it is a safety issue and fix this at their expense.

I was driving on the road around the neiborhood at the t intersection ,I try to brake but my car was not stop . Then I try to put on the brake all the time but my car still keep going and hit a stair brick in front of the house . .

Car was parked. When I returned to the car, the power steering had ceased to function and warning lights were lit for the power steering, abs and brakes. I understand there is a technical service bulletin on the power steering unit for this vehicle for issues related to the power steering locking up. Luckily I was not driving the car at the time.

I was traveling at approximately 35 mph when I first started to apply pressure to my brakes. There was no tension what so ever. I was standing on them and the brake petal was hitting the floor. As a result, I ran though a stop sign and hit a concrete barrier. My steering wheel also locked up and my airbag never deployed. I lost my entire front bumper and the tank that holds the windshield fluid was cracked. The car was towed. I contacted Toyota's manufacturer and was told " it happens". I feel that there was a defect in the braking system and the airbag system. All I want is my car fixed but no one will give me the time of day. I bought the car in February of this year at a Toyota dealership. The car was pre-certified. Thank you.

Sudden accelleration, brakes, battery, fuel injectors, shutting down suddenly, electrical.

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota corolla Matrix. The contact stated that the vehicle would exhibit an abnormal noise when driving 5 mph and below while applying the brakes. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where the dealer advised the contact that the rear brakes were rusted and a small pebble was lodged in the passenger side brake assembly. The vehicle was taken to the dealer four times for repairs but none of the repairs corrected the failure. The failure mileage was 4,000 and the current mileage was 8,000. We are a first time customer of Toyota vehicle. We bought a 2009 Toyota Matrix s awd (VIN: 2t1le40e19c010704) with 22k miles from caldwell Toyota in July 2010. The car now has 26k miles and all brakes are broken. The car is used on a daily basis but for very close distance. The car was supposed to be certified and fully serviced and repaired by the dealer when we bought it. There has been less than 1 year and 4k miles on the car since we bought it from the caldwell Toyota. We feel strongly there is a quality issue with the car and would like to have it examed and repaired with no charges to us. But both the dealer and Toyota refused to do so. We would like to just have a written record of this issue in case there are more and more fatal issues with this car.

I was crossing the bump on the road and after that I lost control. I hit a mail box in my community and I crashed in my one of my neighbor car in the lot. I contacted Toyota and sent pictures after the incident. They denied my claim. I had to pay for everything even thought Toyota knew about that acceleration problem.

While driving a 2010 Matrix, Tuesday oct. 19,2010, approx. 30mphs. The car made a clicking sound as if a cruise control had been set but this car doesn't have cruise control. The car then took off a very high speed like a jet plane at take off. I was unable to control the brakes or steering. The vehicle travel approx. A half of a mile before hitting an embankment and then jumping out of the ditch and back onto the highway where it landed and stopped. The car is suppose to be equipped with six air bags but none of them deployed upon impact.

2005 Toyota Matrix, when brakes are applied for panic stop while air conditioner running, car will not stop quickly and rolls into objects. This is second accident with the vehicle doing this.

The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Matrix. While the contact was driving approximately 20 mph, entering a circle in the roadway, the brake pedal was engaged with no power response. The vehicle would not slow down and crashed into the passenger side rear of the proceeding vehicle. The vehicle continued to travel and then crashed into the stairway of a house. The front driver side tire was trapped in between the stairway and sidewalk. There were no injuries. A police report was filed for the incident. The vehicle sustained extensive front end damages. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer. The insurance company had not inspected or declared the damages to the vehicle at the time of the complaint. Sudden acceleration in 2008 Matrix automatic: first known failure. Car brought new in September 2007; odometer: 6000 miles. While driving approximately 35 mph on even straight smooth roadway, there was a sudden acceleration to greater than 70 mph. When brakes were applied, they depressed to floor without any effect. Car continued to accelerate rapidly. Shifted to neutral without success. Car slowed after being placed in reverse. Coasted to a stop. Placed gear in 2 and drove slowly home - approximately 1/2 mile. Floor mats were not near either pedal and were kept stationary by hooks designed to keep mats from shifting. Called Toyota service department: told that floor mats were the problem; talked to service managers who stated that the sequence of events described were impossible, no problems were known to exist for Matrix and greater than 99% of sudden acceleration problems were due to driver error. After a discussion, the car was evaluated by the service department. The following was reported: floor mats held in proper place no objects on floor normal brake pedal operation normal accelerator pedal operation health check - powertrain, chassis, electrical, network systems - ok computer codes - no abnormalities found normal throttle body inspection tires with normal wear & function problem was not duplicated on test drive. Was told that the car is functioning normally in all areas and has no problems. Implied that my experience was a misperception or misrepresentation. Assessment: there was a significant malfunction in the Matrix which could have led to critical injuries or loss of life. Only due to the traffic flow at precisely that moment, no one was injured. The Toyota service departments denied that the problem exists. Recommendation: sudden unexpected acceleration should be investigated until an answer /solution is found. The findings should be shared with the public. The cost for repairs should be paid by Toyota.

On my 2009 Toyota Matrix the engine over speeds when braking with my right shoe ( size 10 rockport - five inches wide) overlapping the throttle pedal which just 2 and 7/8 th inches from the brake pedal. Try this in an emergency stop. It's real exciting.

2010 Toyota corolla. Power brake assist. Delay or lag when applying brakes when applying the brakes, the pedal would have a soft spot with no reaction and then become responsive.

I had my 2009 Toyota Matrix fixed for the recall and just last weekend experienced a braking incident that scared me half to death. I was approaching a traffic light and stepped on my brakes but my car sped up and nearly hit the car in front of me. Luckily I moved to the next lane.

I was driving through a parking lot with a friend of mine as passenger. I was coming up to a stop sign with 2 cars waiting at the sign. I applied the brakes to begin slowing my car and when I hit the brakes they did not engage for at least a second or so. When the pedal was hit it moved towards the floor very easily and after a second or so the car jerked and began to slow down as it should have. I was able to bring the vehicle to a complete stop without incident, but it was a close call with the car ahead of me. If I had not developed a habit of early braking we would have hit the car in front of us. This was the first time that it happened but the car only has 8000k on it. I am taking to the dealership tomorrow where I bought it 9 months ago to see if they can find a problem.

About 4 weeks ago (and again, this morning, twice!), I experienced problems when braking: the pedal would go more then usual, but the car would not slow down at the same time as it was producing terrible grinding/scratching noises as if parts were coming off. It is not doing this consistently, but since it happened twice this morning, I am concerned. I did find a recall notice dated August 2009 on the brake system for 12 more northern states that experienced brake problems on 09 and 10 Matrix and corolla vehicles with 1. 8 engines due to extreme cold. I live in the mountains if NW n-carolina, and our weather is very much like that in more northern states. Present, we have 4-5 inches of snow on the ground, and temps were about 35-36 this morning (awaiting another winter storm). When it happened last month, it was much colder, but there also was lots of snow on the ground.

I was driving my 2006 Toyota Matrix I purchased one month ago. I was driving on a very wet road less than 20-25 mph. Approximately 9:00a. M. Coming home from local gym. I slowed to stop for construction work on slick two lane road. Brakes did not grab as I tried to slow down. I pushed brakes down harder, and as they started to work, the accelerator began to accelerate on its own, car began to feel like it was revving up. I put car immediately in park, and tires burned rubber (enough to smell) and car stopped completely. It all happened incredibly fast, and scared me to death. I have not had this problem previously (I have owned vehicle for 1 month) and car is not on recall list (clearly should be). I have called Toyota customer service center, and will call dealer where I purchased car next.
