39 problems related to brakes failed have been reported for the 2007 Toyota Prius. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I was driving at a slow speed under 5mph and simultaneously the brakes became very hard, the warning lights came on and a very long high pitched beep came on. It was a catastrophic failure. My dealer checked and the brake actuator failed and the car is not drivable. The fix is over $2000. The car has only 118,000 miles.
I have been told by a Toyota dealership (heartland Toyota) that my anti-locking brake system (abs) pump actuator is failing on my 2007 Prius with only 87,000 miles. The cost to repair this problem is $3500-$4000. Apparently Toyota came out with an extended warranty to cover this problem a while back but limited it to situations occurring prior to 12/31/2017. I contacted Toyota "customer care" in an effort to find out what is magical about the 12/31/2017 end date. They had no good answer. I'm told the brakes could fail at any time with no warning. Currently there is just an unusual pressure release sound when braking and accelerating. No dashboard warning lights are lit.
My car has 115k miles and the abs alarm went off and the dealer said the brake system module failed and need a new one and quote me $3000. I can't afford this so my mechanic installed a used part and still the abs alarm on! this part has a recall that expired in Jan 2018. Can Toyota do this for me? the car can still be driven for a long time. This part is supposed to live much more than 115k miles and probably more than 300k miles.
The brake accuator on the generation 2 Toyota Prius has become famous for failing. Toyota ran an extended warranty, however, dealerships ignored the problem and instead fixed other issues without actually going after the accuator until after the extended warranty expired. Now my car's accuator for the brakes is bad, as indicated by warning lights and alarms. I fear that my 10 year old car will have a brake failure. The repair is estimated at over $2500 for a defective Toyota part. This is unfair that Toyota made a bad part that consistently fails in this model and that they do not fix all of them with a proper recall, or exclude drivers after not relaying important information. I was driving my car down the street when all the lights came on warning me that my brake system was failing so I left the car on the side of the road and will not drive it further.
Brake actuator failed without warning on the highway. Difficult to brake. Very dangerous.
Brake failure in the abs module system.
I took the 2007 Prius to the mechanic and he new what the problem was right away. The brake actuator was failing and that it would cost over three thousand to fix. He said that you may loose the brakes if it fails totally and advised me to sell the car . Toyota knows about this problem in there 2nd gen Prius. The forums I have read tell me that there have been total failures in many Prius. I think Toyota should bear the cost and be liable for this issue. Signed, charlie winkler,ormond,FL,32174.
Brake actuator is failing, and I am outside the extended warranty. Very expensive fix and very dangerous to keep driving like this.
I was backing into a parking space and applied the brakes. The brakes failed and my vehicle climbed the curb, crossed the side walk, and crash into a metal fence on the other side of the side walk. The fence stopped the vehicle. After having the damage to my car repaired and a body shop, I brought it to a mechanic who determined that the car's brake actuator had failed, leading to a potentially dangerous crash.
Brake actuator failure. Brakes suddenly failed as car was driving on highway. In addition and secondarily the engine will not turn off. An alarm went off and brakes failed at about 45 mphil.
Brake pump failed just st like 2010 model, known issue with 2007 models.
The contact's daughter owned a 2007 Toyota Prius. While the contact's daughter was driving 55 mph, she suddenly depressed the brake pedal; however, the brakes failed to stop the vehicle. The contact's daughter attempted to depress the brake pedal several times, but the vehicle failed to stop. As a result, the contact crashed into the rear of another vehicle. The vehicle was destroyed. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed. The contact sustained an injury to the right eye, which caused swelling. The contact's boyfriend sustained bruises to the chest area. Medical attention was required. The vehicle was towed to autonation Ford gulf freeway (12227 gulf fwy, houston, TX 77034, (713) 489-2089), but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 123,000.
Attempted emergency low-speed stop to avoid a bicyclist running a red light in front of me. Bicyclist took evasive action to avoid collision because the brakes failed to fully activate. Pedal went completely hard, abs did not activate, and vehicle slowly halted (no jerk or throwing occupants against seat belts, as would happen with normal brakes). System works normally under light braking. Inability to brake fully under low-speed conditions is a serious failure. Road was dry and tires are only a few months old.
The 2004 - 2009 abs/brake actuator assemblies have known issues. The repair cost is approximately $2000 or more. The part alone is $1500 or more. It appears with this being a common issue (per the service center associate and Prius forums), that even a used part would not sustain without recurring issues thereby making it a requirement to use only new oem parts. The abs/brake actuator assembly failures can cause severe safety consequences due to brake failure. Given that the issue commonly occurs when the warranty expires but with less than 200,000 miles this should be something that is covered by Toyota and the problem should be addressed with the manufacturing of defective parts in all subsequent Prius models.
Going around a corner at a reasonable speed, traction dash light lit up and alarm sounded. Brakes failed to engage. Let off accelerator and slowed. Pulled car off road. Car makes clicks and noises of a small electrical motor engaging whenever vehicle is at rest with foot on brake. Brake system was bled - did not resolve the issue. Any time a small bump in the road is encountered, dash warning light and alarm comes on brakes do not respond for a short time afterward.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that while driving 7 mph and pulling into a parking space, he attempted to engage the brakes and it failed to stop the vehicle. The contact mentioned that the vehicle kept moving forward, went over a divider, and crashed into two vehicles. A police report was filed and no injuries were reported. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicles front bumper was repaired. The failure and current mileage was 112,000. Updated 06/25/13.
Dashboard red lights when vehicle starts with: brake failure , abs warning and stability warning. First time it was immediately taken to dealer who could find no problem and reset codes. Four days later same warning lights came on and was taken to dealer again. Were told hydraulic brake system was ok but brake actuator needed replacement at $2600. Could be driven but without abs and stability capability. Have not corrected this due to high price. Shopping around at salvage yards.
When I apply the brakes they seem to start to brake and then the car actually goes faster for a couple seconds and then it brakes again. It has always done this and has been disconcerting to me. It just feels like the brakes are failing but then they kick back in. I guess as I understand it, its when the abs kicks in, but it seems like an unnecessarily long time from any other car I have driven.
I own a 2007 Prius. I was driving on the interstate when a car in front of me stopped abruptly. When I stepped on the brake, there was a delay before it engaged. To prevent running into the car in front of me, I veered to the left while continuing to step down on the brake with more force. When it engaged, the car was out of control "fish tailing" from side to side. In an emergency situation, there is no room for a delay. This created a very dangerous situation which could have been fatal. I experienced a similar delay while driving in the city, not on a highway. It was the same sensation of the brakes failing. When one is braking in an emergency situation, this is terrifying and not acceptable and not safe. . .
When going over a speed bump or a bumpy road, the brakes seem to fail momentarily, or the brakes fail to respond.
While driving my 2007 Prius in a congested area, the brakes did not respond when depressed quickly contributing or causing a low-speed collision with the vehicle in front of me. I found this article on cnet reviews that accurately matches my issue. "Toyota redesigned the braking systems for the 2010 Prius. That appears to be Toyota's response to the fact that the u. S. Generation 2 Prius (2004-2009) has had low-speed brake failures reported to the national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA) at 31 times the rate of such failures reported for the 2004-2009 corolla, which of course has traditional brakes. Many of the Prius low speed brake failures were in low-speed city traffic, resulting in rear-end collisions without injury. It appears that the several computers that control the complex braking systems were too busy calculating the most efficient way to apply the brakes, and did not get around to actually applying them, until it was too late. ".
Abs, vsc, brake failure.
I own a 2007 Toyota Prius that exhibits exactly the same symptoms with the braking system that has caused the recall in 2010 models. When going over a bump the brakes appear to fail for about 1 or 2 seconds which gives the illusion that the car is lunging forward. This happens everytime I am applying the brakes while driving across bumps or railroad tracks. I reported this to a Toyota dealer twice since purchasing the car and was told this is just how Prius's are.
While driving on a freeway entry ramp our 2007 Prius' brakes failed to engage when the brake pedal was pushed. No braking action was felt and our car ran into the rear of another car on the entry ramp. Estimated speed was eleven miles per hour according to the police report. This was not a skid situation as the speed was so low. The brakes simply failed to engage. Our car is currently being evaluated by our insurance company.
The Toyota braking problem is not a new issue. I own a 2007 Prius and my brakes have always failed when driving on slick surfaces or over potholes. The "slippery surface" icon flashes on the dashboard and the car does not stop immediately. Most recent was Wednesday morning in an inch of snow when my car failed to stop and came to a halt inches from a brick wall. I hope the system is inspected on all cars and not just 2010 models.
My 2007 Prius seems to have a brake issue. If I am on bumpy ground or hit a pothole while braking, it feels like the brakes fail for a brief time. On a couple of occasions when vehicles are in front of me, I have been concerned that I might cause an accident. This just happened again, and has happened more times than I can count. I just found out today about this method of reporting a complaint, otherwise I would have reported it a long time ago.
I am describing a repeating issue with my 2007 Toyota Prius. This failure occurs when I drive over bumpy surfaces, a large pothole, or an area with a dip in the road. Often, when faced with these conditions, the car stutters and lurches and the vehicle stability assist light flashes. At times, the car's slip and stutter seems to last several seconds after hitting the rough patch in the road. While it seems to exacerbate the problem if I am turning or braking, I should point out that I sometimes experience this lurching and stalling sometimes when I am simply driving along at 35 mph and hit a pothole. It often seems to occur in a situation where braking or turning is involved, but it seems more related to the vsa process. I am reporting this failure because I have seen news reports of an investigation of the 2010 Prius model. The description of the brake failure reported in the media are basically the same as mine.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Prius. While driving approximately 6 mph in the snow the brakes failed to stop the vehicle. As she depressed the brake pedal, the vehicle continued to slide forward. The check engine illuminated intermittently prior and after the failure occurred. The dealer was unable to duplicate or diagnose the failure. The failure mileage was 82,000. Updated 04/14/10.
I purchased a 2007 used Toyota Prius in June 2009. On two or three occasions in the past 7 months, the brakes have failed to respond momentarily. This happened at low speeds, when braking around a corner or when the road was wet. The lack of brake response was accompanied by a delay in acceleration. The problem only lasted for a moment and was accompanied by a warning sign on my dashboard. In all prior instances, control of the vehicle resumed after a few seconds.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Prius. The contact was driving approximately 40 mph, approaching a traffic light. When the brake pedal was engaged, the brakes failed to respond in a timely manner. Additionally, the electrical system failed without warning. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired when the complaint was filed. The failure mileage was 23,406. The current mileage was 30,000.
I was in stop and go traffic on i275 in tampa in my 2007 Toyota Prius during morning rush hour. The most I was doing during this time was 15mph. I always stay more than enough behind the car in front of me. I applied the brakes and it was like I was on ice skates. The road was dry but it was like I had no brakes and no control and just slid into the car ahead of me. I told the officer who wrote me up a ticket that my brakes failed, I also constantly told my car insurance and the car repair company to check my brakes because they failed.
2 incidents: 1) 05. 15. 09 I was approaching a car going 20 mph; I pressed my brake to the floor but my Toyota Prius 2007 didn't stop. I tried to avoid the car in front of me. I ran into the explore. 2) 07. 27. 09 I was exiting my driveway. I tried to slow down, but my brakes failed. I was able to use the emergency break to prevent me entering traffic.
I am aware that there is a problem with the brakes on the Toyota Prius. News reports indicate that the problem is confined to the 2010 model, but I would like to report a brake failure incident with our 2007 model Prius. In June of 2009 my wife and I were driving our Prius down a hill approaching a stop light. It had been raining and the pavement was wet, but there was no standing water on the road surface. The light turned yellow as we approached the intersection at a speed of about 35 mph. I applied the brakes but the car continued to move forward down the hill with no braking action and no deceleration. I had no alternative but to speed up to try get through the intersection before the light turned red. The light did turn red just before we entered the intersection, but we were able to make it through before any opposing traffic entered the intersection. It is important to note that during this incident the car showed no evidence of being in a skid - - it simply moved forward without any swerving. Furthermore, there was no vibration in the brake pedal nor any sounds that might be associated with anti-lock brake action. I took the car to the Toyota dealer and asked the service manager if there could be something wrong with the anti-lock system. I was told that they had no way to check that. We have had no further problem with the brakes, but I am concerned that this behavior may recur because of the current braking issue.
I am the original owner of a 2007 Toyota Prius. My brakes seem to fail momentarily when I am trying to stop at a bumpy intersection. This has happened more one time. Although I have not had an accident as a result it is a very uncomfortable feeling, because you just don't know if they are going to bring you to a stop. I have reported this problem to the Toyota dealer (Smart Toyota - madison, WI) and their analysis at the time I took it in on may 14, 2009 was that it could not be duplicated and essentially found nothing wrong.
I owned a 2007 Prius that was totaled after the brakes failed at a yield sign in biloxi ms, and I ran into the side of a car in an intersection. (previously, I had also had trouble with the brakes and it caused an accident in chevy chase MD. I hydroplaned when using the brakes in the rain, and rear-ended a car. ).
