36 problems related to engine burning oil have been reported for the 2010 Toyota Prius. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Exsesive oil consumption. Need to add oil ( 2 quarts or more) between oil changes.
Excess oil consumption, used 2 quarts of oil before next oil change, Toyota's don't consume oil the way this car does , I've never owned a car with this problem using so much oil. The burnt oil is going to eventually build up causing more issues in the combustion chambers and smog devices .
I was aware the check engine light and alarm came on when I would make right or left hand turns. Took my vehicle in for a check. Was told there "was no oil on the dipstick" so had my oil changed on 2/21/2018 and my mileage was 72704. They did an oil consumption test at this time. When I returned at 73696 miles to have phase two of the test checked, the oil was at "full level". Now at 77,250 miles and am having to add oil again. Stopped at Toyota service on 6/01/2018 for them to check the warning light. Vehicle was low on oil again. They topped off the oil at no charge. Thank you! when asked what else could be done about this problem, I was told I could replace the engine. Not going to happen with my 2010 Prius. Not due for an oil change for quite some time. Guess I will check and add oil as needed in the interim.
My 2010 Toyota Prius was impeccably maintained by desert Toyota of tucson, all service records kept. Oil was changed every 5,000 miles rather than the dealer-recommended 10,000. This was my 4th Toyota and I expected it, like my other Toyotas, to have no significant problems for years. But suddenly in 2017, when the engine turned over 107,000 miles (thus making it out of warranty), I happened to check the oil (several thousand miles before the next service was due) and found it near the bottom of the dipstick. It was fortunate that I checked it because I was able to add oil and save the engine. The car performed as before, but continued to burn about a quart of motor oil every 1000 to 1500 miles. There was no evidence of either smoke from the exhaust, or oil stains underneath the car. My service person at desert merely shrugged and said this kind of thing happened occasionally, offered no remedy or contact with the Toyota rep. I began to search the internet, finding that there have been thousands of 2010 Toyota Priuses with this problem. I have kept the car on the road but am awaiting a reimbursed remedy from Toyota, possibly through a class action suit. This oil leakage poses incalculable safety risks to the environment in pollution and unpredictable occurrences. Toyota owners do not expect a $5000 engine repair on a $25,000 car within 7 years of purchase, nor should they be responsible for a Toyota defect which conveniently occurs when the car is just out of engjine warranty.
Engine burning excessive amount of oil. Car has been regularly serviced. Last night, I noticed that the oil reservoir level was so low, the dip stick did not even register it. I had to add 2. 5 quarts of oil before it started reading the oil level again.
Excessive oil consumption.
My 2010 Prius with 167,000 has begun burning engine oil at a rate of about 1 quart per thousand miles. 9 weeks after my last oil change and the engine was down 3 quarts of oil. Mpg has gone down slightly during this time and no check engine light or low oil pressure warning lights came on.
The engine is now burning oil and must be replaced. Toyota is quoting me over 3,000 in parts.
Excessive oil consumption led to engine failure and replacement cost of approximately $5000. 00 also excessive oil cost to constantly fill oil over the years. I purchased the vehicle new. And got stuck with it as I was going through divorce and not working it was unfortunately cheaper to pay for a used engine replacement through Toyota. I have saved all receipts in hopes of recuperating money in the future.
I've had two Toyota Prius in my lifetime, a 2005 and a 2010 Toyota Prius, both have had the same issue where the engine would eat up all of my oil, I would have an oil change done and less than 2 weeks later I would have to check the oil gauge rod and find that the oil levels were below the bottom line, almost empty! the engine would be burning oil at such an alarming rate that I would repeatedly bring the vehicle to Toyota for oil changes. I'm very unsatisfied with my Toyota Priuses. My car is currently at 166,384 miles and the engine cylinder has now given way and also the hybrid battery. I've gone only to Toyota dealerships to have pristine consecutive service and no third party repair facilities have provided service. I am located in souther California in san diego. I have spoken to many other Toyota Prius owners and if you do a google search online as of (04/10/17) "Toyota Prius engine oil consumption" you'll find many forums with "excessive consumption" from many other users. Once you reach past the 140,000 mile mark, your car is pretty much done. Consider buying a new one. Toyota Priuses and their engineers have to come up with a way to satisfy current and future Prius owners as many of us will find that there will be many problems and issues down the road.
2010 Toyota Prius failed an oil engine consumption test at 98,000 miles. It burned 3 quarts in 1,100 miles. Toyota has service bulletin issued in November 2016 to cover this car but inherently, it isn't covered. I have service records that this was happening in June 2015 at 82000 miles, before I bought the car in sept 2016. Toyota will only cover half of $3000 cost of repair. Issue appears to be widespread, across many models from what I've read online and experienced in the dealership. Toyota's failure to address this situation when it has been happening for years is highly alarming, considering it affects a major part of the engine.
On picking up my Prius after routine maintenance, I was told that it was 3 quarts low in engine oil. I was stunned as I had had no warning of low oil pressure or loss of performance. The dealer is conducting an "oil consumption test" to measure how much oil will be consumed in 1200 miles. The estimated repair cost was $2000, but my husband who is very knowledgeable about engines doesn't believe the suggested repair will fix the problem. I have only recently become aware that this is a prevalent problem with late model Toyotas, not just Prius. The customer service agent and the service tech we spoke with were cagey when asked how frequently they have seen this problem. I believe Toyota is very aware of the issue, but are willfully not addressing a remedy.
Oil consumption terrible. Need to add 1 qt of oil every 1,100 miles. Engine is burning a ton of oil.
Excessive oil consumption after having my oil changed at the dealership at 100k miles, I left on a cross-country trip. During the trip, the low oil pressure signal flashed on my dashboard. Upon pulling over and checking the oil, I found there was no oil in the engine at all. I added 4 quarts checking the level in increments with the dipstick, and continued. I had to add an additional quart of oil to the engine over the following week, until returning home. Upon returning, the dealership refused to accept any responsibility for the issue and informed me that I needed new pistons and rings. They did not inform me that this is a recurring issue with my generation of Prius and were quite firm that it was not their problem. There is not reason that a Toyota with 100,000 mile on it should randomly start burning excessive amounts of oil within a few thousand miles of an oil and filter change. All of the maintenance is performed at the dealership at the specified intervals, and I would expect that Toyota would stand behind a Toyota that is maintained per Toyota specifications.
Car purchased new and serviced at Toyota dealership every 10,000 miles using 0-20w synthetic oil. At around 106,000 miles I noticed the display flashing something but could not, at that time, read what the warning was. It seemed to happen going around curves, turning etc. Finally, at maybe 107,000 miles, the warning stayed on long enough to see the low oil warning. Took the car in at 108,000 (no oil on dipstick at that point) and the service department checked for leaks and found none. I was lightly admonished by service for driving without oil. Fair enough, I thought at the time. I was slightly chagrined as I have always religiously had my oil changed (or changed it myself) on all my cars at the recommended intervals with no signs of a problem. The Toyota service department recommended that I monitor oil usage. I did, and to my surprise 2,500 hundred miles later, I had to add a full quart. Then 1950 miles later, another quart. Yesterday, another quart at 1048 miles. Very disappointed as the car has been without problems until now. Have not discussed this with the dealership, but am not encouraged by the tenor of comments posted here regarding Toyota stepping up and accepting responsibility. I see no need, at this point, to pay to have an oil consumption test done by the dealership as the car is obviously using an excessive amount of oil.
I just tested all years from 2010 to 2011 Prius, those Prius burns a lot of oil at every 2,000 miles. I did fill it (at 4. 4 quarts of oil) correctly it but Prius ate over 3 quarts in 2000 miles. Like many of people have been reports this on Priuschat. Com and etc online forums. I hate to spend my money to buy motor oils! why this Prius excessive oil consumption? "what did this happen?" I just purchased 2010 Prius on oct. 2016. And I tested it. It still oil consumption. Toyota dealer can't do anything for motor oil. Since it happened, I still check oil level at every 2,000 miles and put it some motor oil in it until it reach to 5,000 miles for synthetic oil change.
Excessive oil consumption. This problem is identical to the hundreds I have read on the exact same vehicle. It is already well documented by owners.
Excessive oil consumption. The car is consuming 1 quart of oil every 1,200 miles and has failed an oil consumption test performed by the dealer.
Over the past three weeks I have noticed the check major system light flickering when turning to the left or right or coming to a sudden stop. I took my car in for the 80,000 mile check and told the service technician what I had seen. He told me he could tell me what the issue was without looking at the car. He said the car was burning excessive oil, the issue has been reported to Toyota and he would file a case with them for me. He also told me the cost was about $3000 to fix the problem, that I may or may not hear back from Toyota about this. When they finished servicing my car the technician told me they had added extra oil to top it off. This is the first Toyota I have owned. I bought it new and have never had an issue with it. I have taken it in for every maintenance check. I was disappointed that Toyota knows about this issue and has done nothing to notify owners of the issue.
My Toyota Prius has not been identified as one of the models in this class action law suit, but approximately four months ago, at 110,000 miles, my vehicle started to burn oil excessively, causing me to have to fill it every 1,200 miles. I take it in for maintenance to the same person at the same dealership since I have owned the car new. I was notified of this problem with the piston rings with the other Toyota models and that some of the Prius models have also had this issue. This has me very concerned that other owners have been left out of this suit. Considering there are millions of Prius owners that have stood behind Toyota and the Prius as the top hybrid on the market, there needs to be something done about this. Toyota oil consumption defect class action lawsuit is April lax, et al. V. Toyota motor corporation, et al. , case no. 14-cv-01490, in the u. S. District court for the northern district of California.
I have had our pruis for a while now and I loved the car. Now the car is a nightmare and a danger. The engine is burning oil at an alarming rate and couldn't figure out why. We are having to put oil in it every couple of days . It did stall once, so I checked everything I could and then noticed there was hardly any oil on dip stick after change oil a couple of days before. The dealership doesn't tell you anything about the hazardous or recalls for the car. They just tell you to get another oil change. Its recommended every 3,000-5,000 miles but every 1,000 miles is ridiculous plus extremely expensive if you add it up. We cant afford to have the engine rebuilt either. Toyota needs to do something about this problem. I cant believe they know of the problem and don't care about their customers' safety. I also read some other complaints and issues with the oil burning off causing harmful gases. My wife was back and forth to the doctor for throat issues. I believe it was the car all long, hundreds in doctor bills for their lack of humanity. So here we go again, another visit to the dealership. I want this problem fixed by Toyota. We might have to take legal action.
In 2016 about the 130,000+ mile mark on my vehicle, I started complaining about my car consuming oil. The dealer findlay Toyota assured me that it had to do with the heat and was normal. I was lead to believe the paper I signed after the work was complete has to do with the maintenance being done, no one mentioned it meant all my concerns were acknowledged. The days continued and even in during colder months of the year of 2016, I again notified the dealership of my car eating oil and it was nowhere to be found. Again I complained and it was not annotated or written anywhere in their files. It was not until 26,000 miles plus more that they finally acknowledged my issue and took their time to search for the cause. In the month of March 2017, one individual from Toyota actually took his time and did a full check, instead of the usual its hot here and that eats your oil excuse, he give me an answer which lead to me having concerns about Toyota dealerships, he said the pistons had a leak and it was burning up my oil. I called Toyota and found out my car had a recall for this issue but here is the catch, my car would have to be under 150,000 miles, which it was under when I started to first complain. Now that I am over that mileage and was never notified, great dealerships tell you when you take your car for any maintenance about recalls, they say it sup to me to fix this issue they knew these cars have. Since they never wrote down any of my complains, there is no proof of me complaining. This car burns oil moving or sitting as long as the pistons are moving. Where has the honesty and professionalism of findlay Toyota. What is my next step I ask the reader?.
Excess oil consumption at 93,000 miles. The Toyota dealer has told me that it will cost $13,000 to replace the engine and that is my only option.
Car is burning excessive amounts of oil. Dealer told me (over phone) that triangle was from taking corners too fast (dealer has since said this was inaccurate info). Oil change for life (every 10k miles) at dealer and no one has ever notified me that car is using oil. 6,000 miles after last oil change, over 3 1/2 quarts of oil used. I nearly locked up the engine. Car is not leaking oil. Car sometimes smells of oil after starting. Toyota has extended warranty for certain models for this same problem, but not for Prius. My car has 117,000 miles and this problem has been going on for at least the last 25,000 miles (based upon orange warning triangle). According to dealer, problem is with rings (which is the recall for other Toyota cars). Also, according to dealer, this is a real problem for other Prius owners with 100,000+ miles. I consider this very dangerous to safe operation of vehicle and fumes from burnt oil.
Excessive oil consumption starting at 100,000 which worsened. I now have to put a quart of oil every 750-1000 miles in my 2010 Prius. No one at Toyota will admit this is a problem, albeit there are an extreme amount of these complaints online through different blogs and web sites. Really, we Toyota owners bought this car to decrease our carbon footprint. . . Ironic, right?.
I along with an alarming amount of others have experienced the 2010 Prius begin to burn oil at an alarmingly high rate around 60-80k miles. This is accompanied with an emission into the cabin of noxious fumes during high oil burn rate (heavier acceleration) moments. We have all been told by the dealerships that this is "normal". This has led to burning over a quart of oil every 1000 miles, headaches from the fumes, and now I have found out there is substantial soot buildup in the engine resulting from the oil burning requiring very costly repairs. Toyota refuses to do anything to help or even acknowledge the costly issue.
Burning oil issue. Front head light short circuit or burned out. Leather seat separated twice.
My Prius is burning an excessive amount of oil. More than a quart every 1000 miles.
At 92,000 miles my vehicle started to burn oil excessively, I made multiple trips to the dealership, they did multiple tesst and continued to maintain(per Toyota corporate) that I was within Toyota guidelines. This causes me to fill oil every 400-600 miles to be safe and I have found it completely devoid of oil many times. I understand from the dealership that some of the Prius models have also had this issue and have been showing up at the dealership but the company has refused to correct the problem. This has me concerned - there needs to be something done about this excessive oil consumption as my engine could completely cease at any time causing a massive safety hazard. I have all the records and formal complaint to Toyota on file. I have tried to work with them in good faith until now.
Excessive oil consumption, 2-3 qt per 5000 miles.
Waiting for reply from Toyota: increased oil consumption past 100k miles normal for a 2010 Toyota Prius at 1 quart per 2000 miles? oil soot wiped from exhaust pipe. Yellow low oil warning light and beep sounds when making hard turns. On June 1, 2015 at 101131 miles, oil level was down 2 quarts and requested an oil change and filter from dealer. About 2000 miles later on June 26, 2015 at 103300 miles, 1 quart of 5-30 sae mobile 1 full synthetic oil for high mileage cars was added to top off.
The engine is burning oil at an alarming rate: over a quart in less than 1200 miles. The problem began before the odometer turned 100,000 miles.
Vehicle suddenly has excessive oil consumption at around 110000. Serviced at dealer since new, no leaks. Need to add oil every 1k miles. When service light came on, dipstick was dry.
Burning oil 1 quart every 1000 miles. Oil consumption. Piston issue. Requires piston rings replacement. Smell burning oil in air vents. Cost of repair at $7,000 per Toyota. Toyota says oil consumption within normal limits. This is wrong. Request Toyota to repair vehicle and Toyota to pay for repairs.
Serious oil consumption. Took it to three different Toyota dealerships and they all have said the oil consumption is within normal limits. Have to add oil every1000 miles. I never had to add oil to a car and this my third Toyota. The third dealership even told me to trade it in and get a new one. I have seen others complain about this on carcomplaints. Com. Toyota should pay to repair the positions/engine.
