Break actuator is failing in my 2011 Toyota Prius. The car now has a unpredictable abs breaking system. Sometimes the breaks work and sometimes they quickly fail and a error light comes on. The light than goes out as if nothing happened and all is fine. This is a very dangerous problem that will lead to many accidents because the vehicle tells you its good to go, mean while the abs system is failing to stop the vehicle intermittently. I am scared because I dont know if the car will do this on a turn then lose control injuring myself and others.

My car has only 65,000 miles on it and the abs actuator has failed. Before getting it repaired, there were many instances when the braking power was significantly reduced. This is clearly a safety issue that Toyota is aware of, but not willing to repair. I am shocked that there has been no recall.

Abs actuator failure at only 64,000 miles. Potential for complete break failure if not immediately addressed. Toyota is aware of the issue as there is a TSB, but they are charging thousands of dollars for a repair for a safety critical item that is due to a manufacturing defect. This should be covered under a recall.
Abs system fails, rear passenger seat belt issue, headlight bulbs burned too much.

I was on my way to work navigating through busy traffic when the abs system failed in my vehicle. So basically my whole braking system failed, and I was had to drive my car to a stop which was extremely difficult since I had no brakes. I was a dangerous situation because it failed during heavy traffic. So, now, I am left with a vehicle with no brakes. It's not driveable because of this issue.
Well known abs accumulator failure, loud beeping noise, can't drive car safely, high mileage car and will be repairing it, my complaint is that the part is seventeen hundred dollars $1700 which is a lot for something as important as brakes and with such a high failure rate on all of Toyota's hybrids. This part needs to be available from 3rd parties so I am not forced to deal with junk yard abs that is just as likely to fail because of a flawed design.
Abs actuator failure. There was a recall that was good until 2017 and 150k miles. My vehicle has 192k miles. I was backing out of my driveway and the three abs ligths came on and my brakes failed. I scanned the computer using an obd and it indicated failure.

Brake and abs warning lights came on after I replaced the 12v battery. I noticed the right front brake-effect was stronger and it resulted in the car pulling sharply to the right. I took it to a local mechanic who tested the codes and replaced the abs relay. That did not solve the problem and he recommended Toyota service. I talked with a Toyota service rep who told me there was a known problem with some Prius brakes and asked that I give him the VIN. He said there had been an extended warranty to replace the abs brake controller assembly but it had expired some time ago. He said the cost to fix this would approximate $3500. Otherwise the car is in good shape and I would expect that I should have been able to drive it another 100,000 miles or perhaps much more. A typical american-made car with an abs failure will still brake normally - just not have the abs feature. The Prius will not! the Toyota service rep said it shouldn't be driven as it is too dangerous and my experience confirms the malfunction.
Abs accuator failure. This is a very known common failure from Toyota . They will not cover it. This is very dangerous. It has to do with the braking system of my car.
Abs failed. Warning lights do not appear. Heard others have similar issue. Toyota will fix the abs only if the warning lights appear. Warning lights appear only when car is not on completely. Brakes went out with no warning at all. Brakes went out with no warning while driving. Light bulb leaks moisture has since purchase. Light bulbs blow frequently.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 Toyota Prius v. While driving at any speed, the brakes made noise and the abs failed. The vehicle was taken to venice Toyota (941-451-5150, located at 900 u. S. 41 bypass, venice, FL 34285) where it was determined that there was no recall. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

The abs brake actuator failed suddenly without warning and made braking very difficult. A car stopped and when I pressed my brake, there was no power brake. My power brakes just failed and the pedal was very stiff. Toyota needs to issue a recall before someone gets hurt. There was an extended warranty that ended in 2017, but this should not be a warranty issue. It should be a safety recall. Lives are at stake!!.

Abs actuator failed while driving vehicle on high speed city street. Loss of braking power noticed/observed. Actuator failure has been confirmed by Toyota dealer - car is currently being held for repair.
Abs system failed while my daughter was driving alone on rural but heavily traveled streets. Luckily she was not in an accident and injured. With a catastrophic brake failure how is it that Toyota has played this bet and won? 130,000 miles on the odometer. Toyota never informed me of this issue though it is a known failure - not uncommon. Why hasn't this organization (NHTSA) acted on a known brake failure issue??? Toyota quietly extended the warranties without informing the owners of the safety issue - this is unacceptable. Of course the warranty has expired on my vehicle. Now I have an unsafe/unusable vehicle and Toyota wants $2,500 to repair it - more than what the car is currently worth. As far as I'm concerned the NHTSA has fallen short on this problem and really should get involved like they did with the accelerator problem. There are reports that two people have been injured out of four accidents related to this problem. The number could easily be much higher than that and simply unreported or under-reported, or undiagnosed. Unbelievable!!! a known brake system failure with no action other than a minor extension of the warranty - is that all that Toyota can do? is that all the NHTSA can do?.
Warning lights : abs , brake , and anti-skid come on and stay one. Brake pedal is spongy and unresponsive. The error code reads out p1241 & c1391 which indicate brake booster pump failure. Abs brakes have failed.
C1391 - abs system failed.
My vehicle has a defective abs actuator, a part previously under recall by the manufacturer-Toyota. (2006 Toyota Prius abs part, actuator complete assembly, id 44510-47050) warning lights: master warning abs brake system: codes: p0571, c1256, c1391. This defective braking component makes my vehicle extremely unsafe to drive along with thousands of other Toyota vehicles on the road today. This abs actuator can fail at any time and at any speed. Toyota previously launched an extended warranty campaign for this same part on a percentage of vehicles, but purposefully excluded thousands of vulnerable drivers from getting necessary repairs. Toyota has refused to replace this part in thousands of unsafe vehicles even while they acknowledge it was manufactured with known defects. This part is worth nearly the trade-in amount of my vehicle. Toyota is deliberately keeping unsafe vehicles on the road, with a known issue.
My wife had a near-death experience on 22-Mar-18 while driving her Prius (2010) back home. She was driving on a high speed interstate freeway (I-10) in houston and suddenly her abs brake system failed and she can she all warning lights in the dashboard (abs warning light, brake system warning light, slip indicator) were lit. As soon as she saw these warning, she tried to slow down the vehicle safely by applying brakes, but brakes were barely responsive. At this time, she was driving at a speed around 65 mph. She kept pressing the brake pedals and slowly moved towards the shoulder area. After traveling for some distance, the vehicle stopped eventually. She called tow truck and took the car to Toyota dealership nearby. We are waiting for the response from the Toyota service center about the fault.
Abs failure. Was not notified of known issue when they offered the gz1 warranty extension for this issue.
The abs actuator is failing to prime causing the anti-lock brakes to slip and the brakes not to engage. This has happened multiple times while both stationary and driving. I see that Toyota had extended warranty related to this issue however that expired 12/31/2017. My issue started in January of 2018. I have attached a copy of the warranty enhancement for reference.
The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Prius. The contact started the vehicle and noticed that the brakes failed to work. The dealer stated that the abs pump failed and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 127,000.
~tl the contact owns a 2008 Toyota Prius. While the vehicle was stationary, the brake actuator developed a leak that caused it to malfunction. The contact stated that the abs also failed and he could not stop the vehicle. The vehicle rolled out of the driveway into the middle of the road. Bell Toyota in peoria, arizona was made aware of the failure, but the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 147,000.
While driving at a slow speed, the traction control, brake and abs failure lights came on. When I attempted to stop the vehicle, the brake pedal went to the floor without actuating the abs system. I was unable to stop the vehicle using the service brakes. Since I was traveling at a low speed, I was able to slow down and come to a full stop using the parking brake. Now the vehicle is parked and undriveable. I contacted my local Toyota dealer requesting service and was told that they did not have a brake master cylinder or hydraulic brake booster in stock. I checked a second dealer and they told me that you can only get the two units together and that they were on national back order with no eta. Since purchase, I have experienced the issue that many people are reporting where the brakes release over rough road surfaces and the vehicle feels as if its accelerating. If you release and reapply the brakes it would stop. Like others, I dismissed this as a peculiar dynamic of the vehicle, however I am now convinced that there is a serious design flaw in this braking system which requires a deeper investigation. I have been in the auto industry for over 30 years and I can attest that it is not normal to have a total loss of your braking system like this, especially in a well maintained vehicle that is relatively new and have low mileage. This vehicle is now parked and available for your inspection if needed.
Abs brakes fail to engage when one of the front tires hits pot hole / slippery bumpy surface. The car surges forward during braking before braking resumes. The recall and fix toyoto impimented on my car on 2/15 did not address the issue, it only shortened to lag time (period of exceleration - surge forward). The issue still exists and is still a dangerous safety hazard. I reported this to the dealer in smithtown, NY who contacted Toyota factory and they advised the dealer, who advised me that the car operates as per specifiation. The dealer and the factory did not even look at my car! I demanded a work order which they gave me stating "car to be brought back after Toyota is contacted adn advises dealer on the condition". The next day the dealer called me to say totota advised the car is working as per spec. Toyota refuses to address this issue and the dealer will not look at the car. This is a safety hazzard that I should not have to be subjected to. Please contact me. Thank you doreen gebbia, nesconset, NY.
Abs brake fails for a short time when slowing and hitting a bump. This has occurred intermittently since purchase (new) in 2003.

Brake failure - as I drive to work each day there is a place where I am turning onto a different road to get to work. As I approach the turn I brake to slow down and I always hit a bump in the road and/or a pothole close to the intersection. As I hit the area, my car shoots forward and it feels like I have lost my brakes. I can recover quickly by keeping my foot on the brake, but if I was closer to the intersection I could overshoot it and hit someone or someone could hit me. I mentioned it to the service manager when I got my first oil change at 5000 miles and he seemed very unconcerned and he said it was probably the abs brakes failing because the tire lost contact with the road. Well I also have a 2002 highlander and have never had the problem with this car.
I own a 2005 Toyota Prius and I want to report that there is a problem with the anti-lock brake system in that model as well. During the 4 1/2/ years that I have owned the car there have been three incidents where the abs system took too long to kick in. In two of those incidents, if there had been one more second before the brakes worked, I would have been in an accident. All these incidents occurred on smoothly paved freeways. I want it to be known that the abs failure is occurring in 2005 models and on smooth pavement. During my ownership of the car the brake pads have been replaced but this did not prevent the abs failure from happening again. The incident date I am including is the most recent time this happened on the north 5 freeway in los angeles in December 2009.
Abs system failure while preparing to stop from 40 mph in 05 Toyota Prius last September. Had at least three occurrences during the summer of the brake pedal going quickly and easily to the floor, making a "thunk" noise, sounding and feeling like metal on metal, but this would not happen again when I stepped on the brakes again immediately, and certainly didn't happen for my mechanic to hear. Toyota diagnosed a computer failure that cost me $2000 to replace.
On my 2008 Toyota Prius, the brake actuator and brake regulator failed first in November 2008-- car was less than 6 months old. In about August 2009, chirping front end noise returned somewhat intermittently-- noise has gotten to the point that it happens repeatedly every time the car is driven. Took car to Toyota dealership to be diagnosed yesterday (10/17/09) and they have determined that it is the brake actuator that has failed again-- twice in less than 1-1/2 years of owning the brand new car. Vehicle mileage as of today is 22,900. They have not fully diagnosed the car and will not look to see if the regulator has also failed again until they replace the actuator. Meanwhile, they've put me back out on the road in this car for a few days until they get the part in. These are multiple failures of components of the anti-lock braking system early in the life of the car. They do not seem concerned about trying to diagnose the true root cause-- what may be causing these parts to fail. The dealer has asked multiple times if this vehicle has been in an accident-- no, it has not. Evidently brake actuator failures is a known problem on the 2004-2007 Prius (Toyota issued a technical service bulletin-- not proactive, but "if a customer complains. . . Here's what to do to fix it"). It seems that no such bulletin has been issued for 2008 model. I'm very concerned that it is not safe to drive this car with two different parts (and maybe others?) of the abs having failed repeated times. I'm also very concerned about Toyota's cavalier attitude about it.
The contact stated the abs failed. The abs and vsc lights flickered while slamming on the brakes and all four tires locked. The lights came on last week when the fuel was low in the vehicle. The abs was still not working. He was taking the vehicle to the dealership today. Updated 1/25/2006 -.
