Toyota Prius owners have reported 379 problems related to brakes failed (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota Prius based on all problems reported for the Prius.
Brake boaster failure. Dashboard lights illuminated: brake, abs and traction. Brakes themselves felt spongy. Car felt very unsafe. I did find out that Toyota has a hidden customer support program zjb. However, the dealer found my diagnostic code to be c1202 and the customer support program zjb only supports repairs for codes c1391, c1252, c1256 or c1253. However, the exact same symptoms and safety issues were experienced and all the exact same warning lights also came on. The dealer’s diagnostics resulted in a $2,087 replacement of the brake booster. the dealer did contact the Toyota district manager along the way. he denied coverage based on the diagnostic codes reported but again I am arguing that my crazy expensive repair had the exact same symptoms, safety issues, and repair (e. G, brake booster replacement). The car clearly could not be driven. Note my Prius only has 92k miles. attached is a picture of the dashboard warning lights that came on and the dealer invoice for the repair. .

Vehicle brakes fails to stop and needs to push hard on brake paddle to stop the vehicle. Traction control light, abs, and brake lights come on. Took to autonation Toyota irvine in Dec. 2020 reporting the issue but the tech clear the codes and told me that nothing is wrong. The same light came back on and took to 3rd party shop and was informed code c1391,c1345 & c1368 reporting issue of a failed booster and booster pump. Customer support program zjd. I've been in contact with Toyota brand engagement to report the issue and regarding automation Toyota irvine clearing the codes after I took my vehicle to the shop for repairs. But dealer is not repairing the vehicle and the vehicle has been in the dealer shop since Jan 10, 2021. Reporting a issue with brake failure on my 2013 toytoa Prius.

I inherited a 2010 Toyota Prius 3rd generation when my mother passed a few years ago. I've since had several unnecessary and costly problems with the car as well as dealership's outlook, treatment, and indifference to the danger that their customers face--as many already have. The following are situations that I'm experiencing now. First, I was recently leaving the pharmacy when all of my warning lights (abs, brake, traction ) suddenly came on and my brakes failed as I was heading home. I'm a single mother of a special needs child and I had to get home to her. I was approximately 1 mile from my home and I was nearly in 3 accidents that could've been catastrophic. Thankfully the road was dry, clear, and with little traffic. We have been homebound for weeks, without transportation for doctors, food, etc. Our vehicle is our only means of transportation, and we must get to doctor appointments, etc. Second, the car has inexplicably stalled twice. Third, I'm constantly having to replace lights, and have been pulled over by the police for lights not working. Finally, an airbag has been recalled and once I can afford it I'll get that fixed as well. I spoke with my local Toyota dealerships, and after explaining the problems, I was informed (several times as I was repeatedly transferred) that I had to pay an inspection fee that also changed with each person. Finally, I was told I had to leave my car there for days and that I was going to pay thousands of dollars to fix the car. I'm unable to pay that much money--and the amount kept changing as well. I have researched these problems and now understand the methodology and intimidation used on poor people such as myself. Toyota should be ashamed. Fix these problems that will endanger and possibly kill your customers for nothing more than their own incompetence and greed.

On Tuesday, February 23, our braking system failed on our Toyota Prius while driving on a side road after months of continuing weakness in the brake pedal and "lurching" when braking over potholes. The brake system lost hydraulic pressure. Upon inspection by an ase-certifie mechanic, they determined the brake booster assembly had likely failed, but recommended sending to a Toyota dealership. They confirmed the vehicle was unfit to drive. The vehicle was sent to a Toyota dealer. The dealer confirmed the break booster assembly/actuator had failed. The dealer advised the brake booster had previously been under a Toyota "customer service campaign," but that the "warranty" campaign had expired. However, he advised Toyota brand engagement center has often assisted customers when they're just outside the warranty period. When contacting Toyota, they stated this vehicle was never under recall and was not eligible, but then said they sent information on a Toyota safety campaign. Upon research, we continued to confirm that the diagnosis was tied to recall d0h from July 2013. We've also reviewed our vehicle history, and the brake pump assembly was never replaced despite being inspected consistently by Toyota dealers since 2013 and under recall. Toyota has declined to cover the cost of the replacement for the brake pump assembly. The cost of repair is nearly the same as the current value of the vehicle. Toyota brand engagement center has declined to provide this information in writing, would not provide a name, and otherwise acted completely sketchy - for lack of a better word - any time we tried to clarify the repair was clearly tied to the June 2013 recall. We were very, very fortunate the brakes failed on a side street near our home, not on a highway or other high-risk area. We would like Toyota to honor the recall, extend it for other customers, and cover the cost of repair.
Tl the contact owns a 2008 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact depressed the brake pedal which failed to stop the vehicle in a reasonable amount of time. The contact attempted to drive the vehicle until the vehicle came to a complete stop. The vehicle was towed to folsom lake Toyota (200 plaza dr, folsom, CA 95630, (916)355-1500) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the brake actuator failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
Brakes completely failed. Loud beeping sound happened, couldn't stop car even in a parking lot. Had to use transmission to slow to a stop. Was in a grocery store parking lot.

Toyota Prius 2010 started experiencing braking issues in January 17, 2020. Car was taken to the dealer three times with miss diagnosis. In March dealer diagnosed issue most likely a brake booster and pump assembly which was a known issue with 2010 Prius. Toyota identified the issue in a previous quality campaign but only repaired if brakes fully failed. Brake failure is what it took to have your car repaired?.
Brake booster failure, loss pressure at brake the car, the stability control and the abs doesn't work.
On 11/3/2020, several warning lights appeared on the dash. After researching the combination of lights and sounds from the brake pedal I determined that the brake actuator is failing. Per my research, continuing to operate the vehicle can result in a loss of braking assistance. Other Toyota Prius models are covered under extended warranties (reference zjb), but the Prius v models, which use the same actuator, are not. An accident/incident has not yet occured, but this seems like a huge case of negligence on Toyota.
A recently purchased used Toyota Prius v which was owned by a dealer a matter of 2 months ago was sold to me and the abs/brake actuator failure began. The vehicle is outside of the 150k/10yr warranty they want to cover, however is extremely dangerous and has already nearly caused me to be in an accident as the brake power massively fluctuates. I was driving on the highway at the 75mph from phoenix to tucson approx 120 miles. The light came on part way through and suddenly the brakes went from being sensitive and responsive to needing a lot of pressure applied to properly slow. When a diesel big rig swerved in front of me to avoid an obstacle that I would easily have been able to brake from typically, I was nearly slammed into the back end of him with very little power. The light flipped back off about time I made it to tucson, then when coming to a stop at a dangerous intersection on my way through city streets home crossing kolb and valencia (a site of many an accident), I nearly went into the intersection when the brake system suddenly cut out again. When I spoke to the local dealership this morning they told me this was a known problem but since it was out of warranty I'd have to cover 2500 to replace what is a known defect with this vehicle. That's bullshit and dangerous.
The brake booster is making lots of chirping noise when the brake pedal is depressed. While I am not getting any visual indicators of failure at this moment I believe (due to my own research) that when I do there is a high chance of me getting into a car accident. I have read on Priuschat. Com that several people had brake failure due to the faulty pump which caused a car wreck. This is a dangerous predicament to be in and Toyota should extend their warranty to cover the faulty equipment they have installed on these vehicles before someone gets seriously hurt or dies.

Brakes failed to slow or stop vehicle at ?20 mph; driving on a side street. No warning lights were active that morning. Crash into telephone phone resulted in "totaled" car. There was broken branches on road and some mud; car may have skidded. My wife says the car seemed to speed up before the crash.

Engine -engine have broken head gasket. Coolant reservoir started to drain. Coolant slowly leaks in internal combustion engine due to broken head gasket. Causing shaking engine because coolant cannot combust inside the engine. -also egr cooler was fully clogged by carbon that caused failure of carbon air circulation. Brake slowly failing brake actuator in the process. When pressing brakes, whining sound is present and brakes slowly fails to hold pressure in the system when brakes are applied. -brake system was fully inspected and no leaks were found and brake fluid holds in full level.
The brakes failed on the vehicle and I lost all ability to stop. Several dashboard lights were triggered about loss of abs and braking. I was able to stop the vehicle only through the emergency brake. The Toyota dealer indicated that the problem was a failed brake booster and brake booster pump assemblies. There have been numerous complaints about this issue and tpyota needs to recall and repair this iissue.
Warning lights for abs, brake and symbol indicating traction control is operating all lit simultaneously with a corresponding change in brake pedal feel. Toyota dealer diagnosed brake booster failure and initially quoted $1,915 to repair then called back to revise this to $2,915. There have been recalls on this part just not covering my VIN.
Brakes failed while driving car (in motion) which almost caused an accident. The red warning "brake" light, yellow "abs" and yellow traction control light all illuminated. This apparently is a known issue for the Toyota Prius and I have contacted them concerning the issue but they will not pay to fix the problem. My car cannot be driven at this point. This issue is a serious hazard and could easily result in an accident. They need to issue a recall.
Tl the contact owns a 2008 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced brake failure and was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the abs module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 173,600.
I was driving at a slow speed under 5mph and simultaneously the brakes became very hard, the warning lights came on and a very long high pitched beep came on. It was a catastrophic failure. My dealer checked and the brake actuator failed and the car is not drivable. The fix is over $2000. The car has only 118,000 miles.

When turning the car on, while in park, the car lunges forward with the brake pedal fully depressed. The abs actuator/modulator is constantly whirring. Several dash lights are illuminated simultaneously (abs vsc, e-brake, !). My dealer says that this is a common Prius problem that can result in complete failure of braking capability and that the repair is $3,500. According to my service advisor, another customer of central florida Toyota was scheduled for this repair when his brakes failed and his car was totaled. This seems like a very serious safety issue, and is documented on owner forums as a common problem for Prius'. My car has been doing this for a couple weeks now, and realizing how serious is it has prompted me to schedule the repair at my local dealership. I am a nursing home administrator and I rely on this car for my 100 mile commutes.
Brakes fail when applied steadily while moving on a wet or bumpy surface causing the car to continue forward unless the peddle is pressed again firmly. This happens on the city streets while moving in a straight line. This appears to be due to the known abs problem in the 2010 Prius and was supposed to have been corrected byway of a software patch, which I am told by chuck patterson chico Toyota has already been done and no further ehlp could be expected from Toyota.
My brakes have failed due to a faulty brake accumulator and brake booster on my 2010 Toyota Prius. I noticed this problem when attempting to come to a stop at a redlight. The brakes felt spongy and unresponsive. I narrowly missed colliding with the car in front of me by swerving onto the shoulder. Toyota previously acknowledged this faulty part but claims that I missed the deadline by 35 days to get it fixed. The repair costs roughly $4,000 which Toyota has refuse do to accept responsibility for. I cannot afford to fix this and believe that it is irresponsible for Toyota to put their profits above the safety of its' customers. I do no this believe that it is ethical to put a deadline on a safety concern of this nature.
My car's brake actuator failed while I was on highway. Gladly nothing dangerous happened but I am concerned others will face the similar situation with worst scenario. Toyota told me the warranty expired and quoted me $2600. Please ask Toyota to extend the warranty.

I have been lucky to miss closed-call hitting the car in front of me after skidding. When I apply brakes going down the ramp, the car skids and the brake doesn't stop the car until I get pretty close to the car in front of me. I am more concerned because some parts of the road are uneven where I live that increases the chance of brake failure. It happens on surface roads when there is a bump too. The braking distance increase when the street is wet.
I have been told by a Toyota dealership (heartland Toyota) that my anti-locking brake system (abs) pump actuator is failing on my 2007 Prius with only 87,000 miles. The cost to repair this problem is $3500-$4000. Apparently Toyota came out with an extended warranty to cover this problem a while back but limited it to situations occurring prior to 12/31/2017. I contacted Toyota "customer care" in an effort to find out what is magical about the 12/31/2017 end date. They had no good answer. I'm told the brakes could fail at any time with no warning. Currently there is just an unusual pressure release sound when braking and accelerating. No dashboard warning lights are lit.
The Prius vehicles covered only by warranty enhancement zjb are suffering the same dangers from brake booster pump failures as those Toyota covered safety recalls d0h and k0l. By excluding Prius with defective brakes from d0h and k0l, Toyota has left the owners to helplessly experience life-threatening brake failures or malfunctions before Toyota will provide the replacement brake components needed to make the car safe. The law requires Toyota to prevent the life-threatening dangers of this defect before brake failure occurs. Toyota's cost-cutting strategy is causing crashes. Injuries and crashes caused by the brake defect explained herein have been reported to NHTSA. Toyota's decision to provide post-failure repair reimbursement - instead of a preventative safety recall remedy - explains many of the crashes and injuries reported to NHTSA. My 2011 Prius very recently has started making audibly noise while pressing the brake pedal, whether in motion or stopped. This noise contains continuous whirring, whining and loud clicking noise. These noises where not seen before completely. I spoke to dealer mentioning a TSB pertaining to this particular issue in specific and was told nothing can be done until it fails completely, which is bad, as I have a family of 3 and god forbid if this were to happen while driving on freeway, a serious safety hazard and Toyota dealer (rudy luther) response is irresponsible. I am actually worried more now on waiting for the brakes to fail. This loud continuous clicking noises occurs the moment car is turned on and the noises lingers on for short while after the car is turned off, at moments I have to press on the brakes really harder than usual to get the car slowed and is a tremendous panicky situation. I am registering and requesting for this to be looked immediately before any catastrophe.
Brake failure and car went up curb, knocked down stair rail, hit tree and turned over on side.
Complete brake failure on the freeway!!! abs, brake and traction control lights lit up. Almost crashed! code c1391-abnormal leak in brake actuator pump. How long will it take this agency to make Toyota fix this?? its a safety issue!!! stop picking your asses and do something about it!!!!.
Abs actuator. The diaphragm in the brake accumulator fails. This is a known recall. However mine is beyond their extended warranty on the recall of both past ten years and past 175000. Dealer estimate was $2500 to repair. This is an essential safety recall due to the fact that when it completely fails the vehicle loses powered braking leaving only emergency brakes and engine braking mode which are inadequate and not designed to stop the vehicle by themselves. This should be a lifetime warranty recall not an extended warranty recall.
The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Prius. While driving 25 mph, the brake pedal seized when it was depressed and all the warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact managed to pump the brake pedal three times and the vehicle came to a complete stop. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the brake assembly failed and needed to be replaced. The failure recurred and the vehicle was taken to Toyota of braintree (210 union st, braintree, MA 02184, (781) 848-9300). A second diagnostic test was conducted, which rendered the same outcome. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was approximately 84,500.
The brake actuator failed. The brakes started stopping abruptly while driving and would also be on slowing the car down while I was driving. Ifound out that Toyota was making this repair at no cost up until January 2018. My issue is that the vehicle has been registered to me since 2013. My complaint is that Toyota knew the brake actuator was an issue on this model but failed to notify me to correct it even though they had my contact information during the time that it was being fixed for free.
My brake actuator failed causing loss of breaks. This is a public safety issue. I live in los angeles where these cars are all over the roads. I am 6 months past the 10-year restriction on the warranty enhancement zg1. The cost to repair and replace this is $2,200. Toyota issued this "warranty enhancement" to almost 800,000 cars. Why is this not a safety recall yet? Toyota should not be able to get away with this lack of concern for safety of their customers, other dirvers on the road, and their customer service regarding this issue has been a horrible experience.
My car has 115k miles and the abs alarm went off and the dealer said the brake system module failed and need a new one and quote me $3000. I can't afford this so my mechanic installed a used part and still the abs alarm on! this part has a recall that expired in Jan 2018. Can Toyota do this for me? the car can still be driven for a long time. This part is supposed to live much more than 115k miles and probably more than 300k miles.
