37 Body problem of the 2017 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/19/2019

We were stopped at a traffic signal going north. When the light turned green, the car in front of us started to go and all of the sudden, our car went into rapid acceleration. We could not stop the car. It crashed into the car in front of us. We tried jamming on the breaks and turning off the ignition, but could not get control. Because we were heading uphill, the car finally came to a stop. We were on a city street at a stop signal.

38 Body problem of the 2017 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/04/2019

Takata recall possibly. Wet pavement, traffic slowed on interstate to about 45 mph, tailgating small pickup hit my rear crumple zone, shoved me into a small SUV that crushed my front crumple zone. Airbags did not deploy. Neither my wife (front seat passenger) nor I felt any discomfort, but a few days later she complained about pain in her waist area. She was later determined to have a fractured pelvis and a jostled left hip joint.

39 Body problem of the 2018 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/01/2019

The heat shield on the underside of the car, by the storage battery came lose while driving and was damaged. It is held in place by only four plastic pins. The car is so low to the ground that it is hard to clear normal speed bumps let alone older larger ones. We were traveling a housing addition less than 20 mph and just went over an older high speed-bump and puddle when it occurred. We drove the last 100 or so feet home and wired it up out of the way so the car could be driven at low speed too the dealership. The dealership told us this was damage due to our driving negligence "we hit something". When this shield comes off it falls straight into the vehicle exhaust pipe and ground, there is no simple way to remove the piece until a full repair can be completed. It must be wired up off the ground or part of the wheel and exhaust must be disconnected. It took the dealership three tries and over a month to get the correct shield in and perform the repair. The part number in the Toyota parts specification and the repair parts warehouse or not the same.

40 Body problem of the 2011 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/08/2018

On December 8th, 2018, I was driving eastbound on interstate 10 in phoenix, az at approximately milepost 141 around 5:45 pm. Suddenly, I heard a large, *bang* which sounded like a gunshot. I immediately checked myself for injuries and felt the car to determine if a tire was blown. I was intact, and the tires seemed ok as well, but I heard the noise of air escaping from the vehicle. After turning south on I-17, I exited on the first street, exit 199, jefferson st. I turned left and looked for a safe place to pull over. It isn't a good neighborhood, so I slowed down and continued to look around the vehicle as I tried to find the place where the air was escaping. Finally, I cracked open the sliding door at the top of my sunroof, and I noticed shards of glass. I immediately closed it and was relieved it had not been open when this incident happened. I decided I must get home immediately, proceeded back to the freeway, and drove home. When I arrived, I noticed the sunroof was shattered - one main horizontal shatter at the center and two more vertical shatters at each end. I checked the interior of the vehicle for a projectile and found nothing. After researching further, it was clear that the glass had broken simply due to poor design. I immediately filed a claim with my insurance company, farmers. The claim number is 910380. I have also contacted Toyota to get a response, but I have not heard back. I am fortunate that the sunroof was not exposed. There is a paper-thin sliding door that blocks the sun. Even though the sun had set, I had left it closed, and it protected me from the shards of glass. This is clearly a defect that Toyota needs to address. It is December in arizona, and the temperature was 69 degrees when I left to return home yesterday. It's not a heat issue. It's likely a glass defect. I look forward to obtaining more information.

41 Body problem of the 2009 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/15/2018

Maybe related to takata recall: we did not receive a recall, however our car skid into a tree and had significant front end damage, however no airbags deployed. Was going 25 mph on a suburban residential st during a mixed snow/sleet storm. Slight curve and slightly downhill. The brakes were not applied as they could have made it worse. Car sped up into the skid totalling the car with $11,000 damage. We have been given several opinions that the velocity necessary to cause the damage should have triggered the airbag sensors. Car hit the middle of the bumper and perhaps missed the sensors? no report was filed by the police as accident was caused by the road conditions/weather not driver error. I have photos I can send in a few days.

42 Body problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/08/2018

I was driving down a city road at 25-30 mph at dusk (5:15pm), and with my headlights on. The first indication of a problem was the smell of burning rubber when I turned on the heater. Assuming the problem was with another vehicle ahead of me, I turned off the heater and kept driving. A mile later, as I was nearing my destination, I noticed several warning lights turn on (skid light and exclamation mark light) and the steering became less responsive. I then saw smoke emitting from under my hood. A few seconds later, the front passenger-side corner of the car burst into flames. I managed to pull over, woke up my two young children from their car seats, and got everyone out. Within a minute, the entire hood was ablaze. Given where the fire started, I suspect the headlight. I replaced it the day before. The light seemed to work fine for 1 day, but it is suspicious that is also the area where the fire started.

43 Body problem of the 2016 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/06/2018

I have now had my windshield develop cracks twice. The first time was on January 8, 2018. I was driving behind a large truck, and a pebble was kicked up by the truck's rear tire that struck the middle of the base of my windshield. A crack developed the next day, and started spreading. I had my windshield replaced. The second windshield crack occurred on 11/6/2018. My spouse and I had returned from dinner, and he noticed a crack at the base of the windshield, just to the right of center, before we got out of the car, after we had parked in our indoor garage. This time, I do not recall any objects, such as a pebble, gravel, or hail, hitting my windshield prior to the crack developing.

44 Body problem of the 2016 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/05/2018

The windshield on my 2016 Toyota Prius cracked for no reason. I parked my Prius in a covered parking garage. When I returned to my car later, there was a large crack in the windshield (over a foot long), and the crack curved down to the bottom of the windshield. I don't know what caused the windshield to crack all of a sudden. There were no signs of debris or impact. I believe the windshield maybe defective or was set on my car improperly in the factory, which caused stress on the windshield which led to the large crack.

45 Body problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/03/2018

Sun roof exploded / shattered while driving on the fwy. At 70 mph. No traffic around, clear day about 70 deg f. After hearing the explosion, I pulled over and found the glass had shattered and it appeared that it was caused by pressure from inside as the shape of the shattered glass was bowed outwardly. No apparent impact from any foreign object.

46 Body problem of the 2016 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 09/03/2018

In motion on a highway. Windshield got hit by a ?rock? and had a small star. Within days it has grown to cover the entire windshield in several different patterns. Windshield is total loss and needs to be replaced.

47 Body problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 09/02/2018

The rear hatch is extremely hard to open in the summer and now in the winter even harder. I feel this is a safety hazard. My car is parked under a carport winter and summer. I have less than 80,000 miles on the vehicle. I need to be able to get in the rear hatch to change a tire or get a fire extinguisher in case of emergency and I sometimes can't get it to open. Is there some way Toyota can help make this right. The rubber part that you press is harder than a stick and won't release. This happens some times at the grocery store parking lot or at any store parking lot. Sometimes it happens when I arrive home and can't get my groceries out because the hatch won't let it release. Is this a defect that can be corrected?.

48 Body problem of the 2017 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/20/2018

Windshield cracks from impact with small rocks. In the past week, my windshield was impacted twice by small rocks. Both times the windshield was damaged. Both times I was driving approximately 50 miles per hour on a highway. The windhield is the problem. I realize a rock might damage a windshield but the glass in my Prius is much more susceptible to damage than is acceptable. Luckily I got both cracks repaired before the damage could spread and cause safety issues. (I bought my Prius three months ago; it has 5,000 miles. ).

49 Body problem of the 2016 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/01/2018

I reported issues with this car in 2018. Clicking sounds under the car which is still happening, peeling paint on exterior and inside door areas, substandard windshield that spread in a very unusual pattern when hit by a small rock. The NHTSA id number that was assigned to these complaints is 11139280. None of these problems have been addressed. There are other owners that have experienced the same problems, apparently their issues have not been addressed. These problems should have been sent by you to the Toyota corporation, but apparently was not. I have owned many Toyota vehicles and have not experienced these problems. I also own a 2012 Toyota Prius which I drive when I when I am traveling on the interstate, because I feel that the clicking noises on the 2016 Toyota Prius is a safety issue that seems to be coming from the steering section underneath the car. When traveling the speed limit on the on interstate highways, what would be the outcome if the steering mechanisms underneath the car did not work properly. It is a shame that this safety issue has not been addressed by you, and it is also a shame that I have to drive my older Toyota at these times to feel safer when driving.

50 Body problem of the 2017 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/08/2018

Car has loud continuous creaking/squeaking noise from left rear of the car. Sounds like it is coming from the suspension or body flexing when driving. It occurs when turning and reversing out of parking spaces. Also happens when car is going uphill and downhill and on winding roads. Driver seat also squeaks when in a certain position. Squeaking/creaking from rear left side of the car can be dangerous if coming from the wheel area or suspension.

51 Body problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 06/21/2018

I was on the freeway in traffic, going 60 mph. There was road construction coming up ahead. I depressed the brake pedal and nothing happened. The car didn't slow down at all and I crashed into another vehicle. My car was manufactured when the voluntary safety recall by Toyota was supposed to address this, but I received no notification, nor did thousand oaks Toyota, where I had the car serviced, communicate about it.

52 Body problem of the 2012 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 06/01/2018

Weather stripping around the solar sunroof cracked and has come off in sections. This is a very common problem with this specific model, but remains low due to the low numbers the solar sunroof packages was produced. Afraid the sunroof will leak if used, so it stays inoperable in order to not damage broken seals.

53 Body problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 05/05/2018

Car was parked and noticed that rear bumper on right corner was hanging off slightly, with clips visible underneath. When pushing it in to try and rehinge onto the clips, it moved another part of the bumper. Bumper view from the rear is not showing one side is sagging.

54 Body problem of the 2017 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 04/20/2018

The windshield of our 2017 Prius prime sustained damage while traveling on a highway. The stone was pea sized and should not have cracked the windshield at the speed of 50mph.

55 Body problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 04/03/2018

Hood latch will not open 50, 60% of the time. Many people are having this problem and I feel it should be recalled. .

56 Body problem of the 2015 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/28/2018

On February 28, 2018 at 10:00 a. M. I was driving on I-10 w about 10 miles outside of new orleans when my closed, locked sunroof exploded upwards, shattering completely the center sunroof panel and showering me with glass. It was a clear sunny day, about 70 degrees, the road was clear with no traffic or debris and I was traveling at approximately 65 mph.

57 Body problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/19/2018

The rear lift gate latch on my Toyota Prius has stopped functioning. The exterior rubber over the latch mechanism/switch has melted, turned gummy and will no longer function to open the lift gate. In cold weather the latch has been even more difficult to open and the trim piece containing the trunk hatch latch bezel while trying to get the latch to release broke. I can no longer open the trunk of my car from the outside. This is a security and a safety hazard as I can not access the rear hatch of my car in under normal use nor an emergency and defeats the primary purpose of a hatchback car which is access to the car's interior. The car jack and emergency spare tire, battery located just behind the failed hatch latch. I am disabled, I can not put a wheel chair in/out. This is unsafe and Toyota refuses to assist with the repair. This replacement part/service only is warranty for 1 year at a price of $675 to repair. Under the ada act - please investigate and advocate a recall.

58 Body problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/05/2018

The hatchback rubber door handle melted even though my car is garaged and not exposed to the sun's heat. Also the hatchback latch would not keep the door in an open position. It dropped multiple times hitting my head while getting the groceries. Can't remember how many times it hit my head but definitely a safety issue that Toyota should address.

59 Body problem of the 2014 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/22/2018

On a winter day my car slid down a steep road and would not stop while breaking, both front fender flares broke off causing the car to act like it was on a sled. The car eventually stopped after I placed it in neutral and then slid again and then it finally stopped. I almost killed myself.

60 Body problem of the 2018 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/04/2018

The caught on fire in the middle of the night while parked. Nothing was turned on and nothing was plugged in. The car was totaled. Toyota is refusing to admit this car has a problem and randomly catches fire. Toyota just issued a recall on another model of the Prius for this same issue.

61 Body problem of the 2012 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

Three different door lock actuators (front left, front right, rear left) have failed and been replaced. Symptom is that door does not lock or unlock from key fob or lock control on driver's armrest, also fails to lock automatically when shifting into gear if that option is set. Door must be locked and unlocked manually using the rocker switch in the inside door handle. Clearly there was a batch of defective parts used during manufacturing.

62 Body problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

63 Body problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/21/2017

After I noticed that the SUV sufficiently ahead of me in the same lane was stopping to make a left turn, I started slowing down with plenty of space. I glanced for a second to my right side to check safety around another set of headlights. When I faced forward I could see that I was getting too close to the about-to-turn car ahead of me. I immediately slammed on the brakes, but the car kept moving forward and slammed into the SUV's rear end. Thankfully there were no physically injuries, but the collision caused low/moderate damage to the SUV and major damage to my Prius -- enough that the radiator was clobbered, and that my car had to be towed. At the time of this post, the repair shop has not yet finished evaluating it and reporting on all the damaged parts and the estimate costs. Prior to purchasing this vehicle about 9 months ago, I had checked for active recalls but found none, and I confirmed the same shortly after the purchase. Apparently, though, Toyota has not yet issued a recall on the brake system even after many similar complaints about such a failure during an emergency need for a total stop. I am really interested in pursuing further action, possibly through legal avenues.

64 Body problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/06/2017

When the temperature dips below 40 f, the rear gate does not open. The rubber covering of the switch to lift the gate gets very hard and does not respond to pressure to open the rear lift gate.

65 Body problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/23/2017

Toyota Prius (2008) - fire after minor accident (battery fire) after a fairly standard rear end collision (25-30 mph), my Toyota Prius caught fire and burst into flames. I was stopped at a red light on a city street in chicago, IL when the accident occurred, my vehicle was not in motion. Within minutes of impact (to right rear of car), the responding police officer saw fire under the car (began in rear) and the fire dept was called. The fire travelled to the front of the car and the car has been deemed a total loss. The police and tow company believe this was caused by the Prius battery and these cars are very unsafe to be on the road with this condition. There has been no related recall on this vehicle, but it's incredibly unsafe and I'm very happy I was not traveling with my children at time of accident. I appreciate you taking time to review this case and taking steps to ensure Toyota addresses the issues with the Prius vehicles. I've attached the police report and photos of the car fire (I also have video of the fire, but the file is too large to attach on this submission - available upon request). No major injuries - I experienced soreness / headaches from impact/whiplash and saw my doctor following accident (no major injury). Please review and let me know if I can provide anything else / answer any questions. Thank you in advance! frederick gundrum.

66 Body problem of the 2016 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/05/2017

67 Body problem of the 2011 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/23/2017

The lower window on the rear hatch shattered without warning.

68 Body problem of the 2016 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/05/2017

Leased the vehicle for less than 1 year and have experienced 3 major cracks to the front windshield. The first one was caused by probably a small rock while driving mid speed and spread immediately from the passenger-side perimeter. The second one was caused by unknown, maybe a rock, as I did not see nor hear anything but overnight saw a crack in the center that spread very quickly. The third crack was caused by probably a small rock that started on the driver's side perimeter. I have owned nicer cars than the Prius and also ones less prestigious. While owning these cars for 5+ years and driving extensively, I have never, ever suffered more rock impacts by a windshield that caused extensive damage than when I have driven this 2016 Prius. This car should be re-examined for safety and angles. In addition, Toyota supposedly has had a backorder of this particular type of windshield and has not allowed after-market production so I am forced to either use my insurance or pay an exorbitant amount out of pocket.

69 Body problem of the 2012 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/28/2017

On July 28, 2017, I was driving along with my three children. I pulled into a driveway to park my vehicle behind a parked vehicle. There was approximately a 2 foot span between the back of the vehicle and the front of my 2012 Toyota Prius. To the right of the parked vehicle was a parked truck. Being that I was pulling into a space to park my vehicle, I was traveling extremely slowly. I began to press on my brake to park the vehicle and instantly knew there was a problem. Upon depressing the brake, several lights began to flash within the dash to include but not limited to the abs, warning light, and the light with vehicle swerve lines. Other lights were also flashing, but I do not recall each one. The brake pad instantly went straight to the floor with no pressure. The vehicle would not stop and continued to travel forward with acceleration. To avoid hitting the vehicle in front of me I began to turn my wheel to the right. The vehicle continued to accelerate and came into contact with the truck that was to my front-right. My Prius failed to slow or stop. It continued to accelerate and began pushing the truck up the driveway and into the metal garage door with the brake pedal being depressed the entire time. Eventually, the car came to a stop and the lights continued to flash prior, during, and after the incident. After the car was towed tread wheel marks were found on the driveway where the wheels spun and left an imprint in the asphalt. I and my children were uninjured however, the incident was incredibly traumatic. The vehicle was deemed a total loss by my insurance company and as of yet to be processed for diagnostic testing by Toyota. The Toyota care service was informed of the accident. Toyota believes it to be associated with the intelligence component of the vehicle, however determination is currently unknown until diagnostic is performed.

70 Body problem of the 2014 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 05/29/2017

While parked, the struts that hold open the rear lift hatch failed suddenly, causing the hatch to fall on the head of person loading the car. The hatch was caught by a second person, preventing serious injury. On inspection, the struts were leaking oil.
