1 Dashboard Failed problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/21/2021

Instrument cluster in my 2008 Toyota Prius completely went dark while driving from phoenix to my home in tucson. I was travelling on I-10 at a speed of approximately 70mph. Terribly frightening when all gauges fail at the same instant. This happened in Jan 2021. Speedometer, fuel gauge, headlight indicators, prndl, lcruise control, lights that indicate engine emergencies do not light. Back-up camera does not work nor do the back-up lights. These all are extremely dangerous safety issues. Having researched this problem it is evident that Toyota knew about this problem as they have recalled thousands of Prius' for this issue. They issued an extended warranty for this issue but mine expired before I purchased this vehicle in February, 2020. I firmly am convinced that Toyota should honor the warranty for this dangerously common failure which happens to many different model year of the Prius. It's, in fact, irresponsible of Toyota to not repair these vehicles as they have known how massively prevalent these failures are. The local Toyota dealers is charging over $1000. 00 to fix the problem. I, for one, cannot afford such a cost for a malfunctioning, critical for safely operating their product, that should be remedied into perpetuity, since they have unquestionably been fully aware of the problem and it's severity. I should not be excluded from repair simply because the failure happened later in this particular vehicle than others.

3 Dashboard Failed problem of the 2004 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/02/2020

All the instrument cluster lights continue to go out on my 04 Prius. I don't know how much fuel I have this could be a safety issue. I don't know how fast I'm going this could definitely be a safety issue. And zero warning lights come on this is definitely a safety issue. By looking on the internet I can tell thousands of Priuses have this exact same issue with the instrument panel cluster going out. This should definitely be a recall.

4 Dashboard Failed problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/12/2018

Toyota sent the extended warranty notice on the combination meter to the wrong address; therefore, I could not "connect the dots" regarding my dashboard blackout--meaning I thought it was quirky, not a documented problem with the combination meter. My 2007 Prius with only 35,000 miles on it needs a replacement combination meter but Toyota will not pay for it--claiming it provided an extended warranty. My response so what? I am driving a dangerous vehicle which does not indicate the speed I'm driving, the gas supply, the warning lights, and backup camera. I have had the requisite services over the years and the problem is clearly a defect in Toyota's manufacturing and supply chain. If Toyota really cares about the customer, why won't Toyota take responsibility for the failing part and repair my perilous vehicle? the situation is dangerous! I can't lock the car, know for sure when it is turned off, see the warning lights, know if the airbag alert is legit--non-functional all. To replace the failed part will cost near $1000, my monthly social security. Think about this pricetag, Toyota headquarters and local dealerships. My safety is severely jeopardized. Please work to recall these impacted vehicles. That my Prius has been serviced every single year according to schedule, that this mysterious dark screen has been popping up for years, and that Toyota sent the notice of extended warranty to the wrong address should demonstrate where the culpability lies. Toyota should take ownership of this dangerous situation and fix all the defective vehicles--behavior which demonstrates the company truly cares about its customers!.

5 Dashboard Failed problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/25/2018

I was driving my 2007 Toyota Prius in the middle of the night and all of the sudden all of my lights went out. I was in the middle of a busy road and could not see anything and decide to just pull off the road and hope not to hit anything because I just wanted to get off the road before I got hit by an oncoming car. After I got off the road for awhile I tried the lights and they both worked. I took my Prius to a state college, PA dealership and they charged me $450. 00 because they said both headlights were out. The next day after I picked my Prius from the Toyota dealership I went to a grocery store after work and the car would not turn off and the whole dashboard was black. . I called the dealership and said they must have created a short in my car and they said bring it back in. The next day they told me the whole cluster system that controls the dashboard was bad and they would be charging another $680. 00.

7 Dashboard Failed problem of the 2009 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/09/2017

Display for odometer, speedometer and gas gauge goes out intermittently. The combination meter (a. K. A. instrument panel or cluster, the thing you're looking at in front of you) is bad. There are several electrical components in the circuit board that control how it powers up, and they fail. Lacking the ability to power up, the display goes black. Joe myers quoted us $1156 for repair, and one week repair time. Service advisor said that repair part is fixed part so that problem will no longer occur. We must drive the vehicle till we replace it. No offer was made to provide a loaner car if 07 Prius went into shop for replacement cluster. It is really unsafe to drive without knowing speed that car is traveling. And we would not know gas level. Who wants to run out of fuel? very unsafe. Why isn't Toyota owning up to this deficiency? shouldn't it be a recall repair? we are the original owner and we have taken the vehicle into the dealership service shop for repairs since we purchased the vehicle.

8 Dashboard Failed problem of the 2004 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/14/2017

Digital dash fails to illuminate dealer says recall has expired a known problem by Toyota.

9 Dashboard Failed problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/11/2017

Car runs but dashboard lights fail to illuminate when it is cold outside. This is a widespread problem with 2004-2009 2nd gen Prius as evidenced by pervasive internet comments by owners experiencing this problem. The problem is Toyota used an overly weak capacitor for a combination meter circuit so when it is cold insufficient electricity is available to illuminate critical-safety-related dashboard lights, including the speedometer. Toyota recognized the issue and issued a warranty extension for this exact problem but limited it to vehicles within 9 years of date of first use. The problem apparently tends to emerge only after 8 or 9 years so many vehicle owners discover the problem is not covered. Owners face the choice of a costly repair at their own expense or driving without a speedometer or backup camera or critical, safety-related warning lights. Toyota should be required to fix this hazardous condition for all vehicle that develop this problem, especially since it is due to a recognized, widespread deficiency in the car's electronic circuitry.

12 Dashboard Failed problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/05/2016

Our car was stationary all 3 times the instrument cluster went out, where we could not see what gear we were in, the speedometer, odometer or fuel gauge. One time, even though we pushed the power button, the car would not turn off. Toyota advised they issued a warranty enhancement, after a technical services bulletin was issued, but we did not receive the notice. We feel the NHTSA should have made them issue a recall as this is not safe. Toyota told us we are past the 9 year enhancement so they are refusing to pay for the repair. Although we have not experienced it, we were told others have been in a situation where the car conked out on the interstate when they were going 65 mph. We hope NHTSA will make Toyota issue a recall on this dangerous problem.

13 Dashboard Failed problem of the 2006 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/01/2015

Toyota is aware of a widespread issue regarding the electric dashboard going out. They have refused to replace mine due to it being past the "time window". This should be a safety recall. Drivers are unable to determine if there are any warning lights, what the fuel tank reads, mileage, or any other information. This affects more than just the 2006 model, as well.

14 Dashboard Failed problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000. Ah.

15 Dashboard Failed problem of the 2004 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 03/13/2015

The dashboard display failed to light up, but the car turned on. It did go into drive, so I drove my daughter to school, then stopped to call coggin Toyota at the avenues to report the problem, but the car would not turn off. They said it was the instrument cluster, a known problem with the Prius and for which there was a technical service bulletin and a warranty enhancement, although that "enhancement" ended 9 years after the vehicle went into service. I brought the car in right away since I couldn't turn it off. My car is 10 years old. I called Toyota to complain that I had not been told about this when it was still under the enhanced warranty period (although they have records saying they mailed something) and that if I had known about this (and apparently dozens of other problems looming out there for which there are tsbs) one week earlier when I paid over $3,000 to have the hybrid battery array replaced, I might have made a different choice. My biggest complain centers on being told what I believe was a lie by the Toyota customer service rep -- kim -- when I pressed for why, if the manufacturer knows the part has a high failure rate that it's willing to take responsibility for, does that enhanced warranty period end? she told me the government of California and other states limits that period to 9 years. She could not provide documentation of that government regulation, and it doesn't sound right that regulations in California (or other states) would limit the time it would allow a company to offer repairs to its product with an enhanced warranty. Has this happened to anyone else and what can be done about it?.

17 Dashboard Failed problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/27/2012

Total dash board failure. . . . . Design is composite so all instruments go dark except check engine light which is the least of a safety issue. . . Instrument panel should have separate circuits so safety isn't dependent on any single point of failure.

22 Dashboard Failed problem of the 2005 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 03/01/2009

In March of '09 I drove my car to a local shopping center. When I returned to my car 10 minutes or so later, I tried to start the engine by pushing on the start button. The entire dashboard display lighted up, including all of the warning lights, but the car wouldn't start and I wasn't able to turn to turn off. I am not sure if the engine actually came on. I also wasn't able to put the car in gear. . At some point, all the display lights, including the gear shift box, started flashing. . After trying for about 5 minutes, I called my Toyota i10 dealer in indio, CA who said he had never heard of this happening. While talking to him I kept pushing buttons and finally, I was able to turn the car off and then back on and everything worked from that point on. I was not told by the Toyota technician to bring the car in and I didn't. The second time it happened on 4/3/09 the same problem happened again. The car was parked in my garage and when I went to start the car, all of the above happened again, but I believe I was able to turn off the ignition. I called aaa, they jumped my 12v battery , and I immediately drove the car to my Toyota dealer. They recharged the battery and said that the battery tested high after the recharging. That battery did not have to replaced until 10/22/09. I have another complaint which may or my not be connected to this complaint,. On approximately 1/6/10 while driving my car the lights displaying my speed and fuel gauge went out. I thought it might be a blown fuse so had that checked. The fuse had not been blown. I continued to drive the car for about another week or so before calling to make an appointment with my Toyota dealer for the next day. On that day, 1/20/10 I called I drive my car to do several errands, one of which was quite near the area when I first had the trouble with the car starting. In this case, as I was leaving the area, my display lights came on and I have not had any trouble with them since.
