5 Engine Stall problem of the 2014 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 04/08/2014

While driving on the freeway at highway speeds a series of yellow triangles suddenly flashed on the dashboard along with some beeps. The engine then stalled and the gas pedal no longer responded to any inputs. Due to a combination of sheer luck and driver presence of mind the car was steered to the shoulder of the highway where it came to a halt. The experience of trying to control a car with a stalled engine and safely steer it to the shoulder in heavy traffic was terrifying to say the least. The car was taken straight to the dealer where it was left for service. After diagnosis a couple of days later the dealer called back and said that the engine control module had failed which is why the engine had stalled. The car is still with the dealer since the part is not available and needs to be shipped from Toyota. The dealer claimed that this was such a rare occurrence that they did not have the parts available. They also claimed that they did not know anyone else for whom this had happened. Maybe so but this was an incident that could have been fatal. The fact that nobody got killed is just plain luck.

7 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/02/2011

We were driving on the highway at night and suddenly, without warning, the engine stalled completely, the car died, and all of the warning lights came on, including a red triangle, check engine, brake, and some others. The Prius lost power and I had to turn on the hazard lights and coast to the shoulder. We called the aaa towing service and 911 (as the shoulder was very narrow and we could not get out of the car). The officer and the tow truck driver checked for all possible driver errors, including gas, but did not find anything out of the ordinary (the gas gauge showed 5/8 full). The car was towed to the Toyota dealership in sunnyvale who are working to determine the cause. This was a very dangerous situation as we were driving on a highway, with a child in the car, at highway speeds at night and the car suddenly died. It has left us shaken and we will be contacting Toyota to see if they have a fix for this.

10 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/26/2006

2005 Toyota Prius went into a sudden engine stalling mode. I do realize that Toyota has a recall on such vehicles, but the Toyota dealership that I took it to, the same place where I bought the vehicle, that had a "prius expert" has been diagnosing this problem for a day with no answers / anticipated fix date. This is annoying to say the least, as Toyota does not seem to have taken the time to train it's dealerships on their own recall information. I could steer and operate the vehicle in electric only mode. Pressing the power key would not power off the car. Hence the battery started to drain. Opening the passenger door and pressing the power key, seemed to have been able to stop the car, not sure whether this was timing, or some coincidence. Starting the car again, made the gasoline engine come on for the purpose of replenishing the charge for the battery, with the dash still displaying the same issues. Also, pressing the accelerator again, does not raise the rpm of the gasoline engine. Its stalling continues after a power cycle.

13 Engine Stall problem of the 2003 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/12/2005

2003 Toyota Prius gas engine stalled, warning lights came on all over the screen, and it would only drive on "battery power. " after stopping, I turned the car off but it would not re-start immediately. After a few tries and then waiting, the gas engine started when I turned the key. During the time it was running on battery, air conditioner was blowing hot air. After gas engine re-started, air conditioner blew cold air. Toyota service said they had never seen anything like what was on the screen they diagnosed and said it was the computer and ordered parts. They were also thinking the battery had something to do with it. 1. They may not have diagnosed my car correctly since they do not know about this recall, and may not fix it correctly (including putting grease on certain wires). And 2. That news reports in the u. S. Say it is 2004 and 2005 Priuses which are affected, so 2003 owners may not get letters to take their car in on this recall. This could result in people being killed. I want service dept to understand that Prius 2003 owners may not be notified because Toyota may not be aware that they also have the problem. They should inform Toyota they have a 2003 in for repair with same problem as 2004-2005 cars. I am concerned they may not do repairs on my car in accordance with what is specified on the recall even if I did not get a letter. This upsets me and it also scares me. I am sure Toyota would notify service & owners if they were aware it also affects 2003 Prius'. So I want you to make them aware of it and be sure they send the 2003 owners letters too.

16 Engine Stall problem of the 2004 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/03/2005

Per consumer call with c. Rose (odi) on 9/29/05 July 2004: she was backing out of driveway and went from reverse to drive without stepping on brake and started to pull forward and the vehicle stalled/ cut off. Could restart all times. July 6, 2004: stopped at a stop light and started to accelerate to about 10-20 mph for about 1 minute when the vehicle went into neutral; gas engine stalled, but she had electric power, but said neutral; thinks stepped on brake and pushed power (starter) button 1-2 times and was able to continue driving the vehicle at full speed. July 13, 2005: happened 2 times - driving on a crowded city street at a max of 30 mph when she noticed that the vehicle would not respond to her stepping on accelerator (panel showed neutral); able to drive vehicle no more than 5-10 mph. Pulled over immediately less than 1/2 mile. Turned it off and was able to restart right away. Drove for another minute and then the same thing happened again so she pulled over, turn off the vehicle, and restarted it right away. Did not have any additional problems that day. July 23, 2005: on the freeway going to have the vehicle looked at by dealer. She was accelerating from 45 to 65 mph, when the vehicle lost power. Vehicle continued to decrease speed. She immediately pulled over to the side of the road (believes it got down to no more than 20 mph). She stepped on brake and restarted. Not sure if the vehicle fully cut off. Brought to the dealer and they could not duplicate what happened or figure out what was wrong. Dealer called Toyota to see if this happened before and they said it did not. Dealer did not do any work on it. August 21, 2005: backing out of driveway going from reverse to drive without engaging brake, vehicle stalled/ cut off.

18 Engine Stall problem of the 2004 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 06/02/2005

Toyota Prius gas engine stalled after Toyota service patch was downloaded to correct problem. Bought car March 1, 2004. Car stalled may 13 and June 1- see report filed under may 13 date. July 31, 2004 Toyota downloaded patch to fix the problem and we thought it was fine. Car was ok for almost a year. Then, just 2 weeks ago on June 2, 2005 I was driving on the highway (luckily in a lot of slow traffic so only going about 40 mph) and the gas engine died again so the car dropped to 20mph on the electric engine. All warning lights came on again. This time I stopped and restarted the car and the engine (gas and electric) came back on. This is what the dealer had said that the other customers having the problem had found- if you stop and turn it back on after a stall everything works. So since my kids were not in the car I did this and drove it to a parking lot. The warning lights were still on and now I am really scared to drive the car. In all three situations I feel like I was just lucky that I was not going faster and especially inthe second case that the driver behind me was aware enough to avoid my suddenly powerless car. I thought it was important to report this because we thought Toyota's software download put in in July 2004 worked to fix this problem but it clearly is still happening. I will not drive the car now with my children in it and am considering getting rid of it. If it were any other car it would be gone by now, but we are big believers in the hybrid technology and really waited to report this to give Toyota a chance to fix it. I think this is happening a lot more than is being reported because a lot of the customers feel as we do that we do not want to report anything bad about the hybrid. However, this is too scary now and needs to be addressed. With a third baby on the way we were signed up for the hybrid highlander but unfortunately will wait until we know this problem is solved.

19 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 05/27/2005

The consumer had the vehicle for 2 weeks and had an episode where the engine stalled on the highway. The consumer believed it may have been caused by a momentary event to shift it incorrectly from the braking mode. When the consumer first attempted to put it in reverse, it wouldn't take then, and it would not take into the proper drive mode either. The engine had stalled, and would not go into drive. The consumer stopped the vehicle, and was able to restart it. The consumer had not experienced problems since then. The consumer called and reported the problem to Toyota. Gasoline engine on hybrid vehicle failed to kick in or stalled.

20 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 05/25/2005

I was traveling at about 70 mph on the interstate, when the engine stalled. I was close to an off-ramp and was able to coast off of the exit. At the bottom on the exit I was able to start up again by shifting into drive.

21 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 05/18/2005

While driving my 2005 Toyota Prius on highway at approximately 65 mph, the gasoline engine completely stalled but the electric motor continued to run allowing me to exit the highway, albeit at a reduced speed. I managed to drive approximately 1 mile to 1. 5 miles until the electric motor battery was conmpletely depleted. The vehilce would not restart and I arranged to have it towed. While waiting for the tow service I tried to restart it a number of times and after 35 - 40 minutes it started and since then has had no issues. I believe that when it stalled on the highway the crusie control was set and there were between 1. 6 and 2 gallons of gasoline remaining in the tank. This could have been a disaster if I was in heavy traffic in the fast lane as the car went from 65 mph to 35 - 40 mph in seconds! I also barely made it off of the highway and was actually sticking into the travel lane somewhat when the elctric motor also completly died. I notified Toyota of the problem but no corrective actions were taken and they did not inform me of any issues.

22 Engine Stall problem of the 2004 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 05/05/2005

Toyota Prius owned by our agency has had the engine stall problem 3 separate times.

23 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 04/27/2005

I had been driving my 2005 Toyota Prius at 40mph when I accelerated to pass a car and then had to stop briefly at a traffic light. When I pulled away from the light I noticed that the car felt very sluggish and wouldn't accelerate over 40 mph. I then realized that I was driving on the hybrid system only and that the engine had stalled. A big red exclamation point lit up on the dash and I was able to coast into a parking place off the highway. When I attempted to restart the car it did nothing. I called Toyota service and explained my problem and he arranged a tow truck pick up my car but told me that since it was 5pm they wouldn't be able to look at it until the morning. The next morning they told me that the car started without incident and although they ran extensive testing they could find nothing wrong. They wanted me to come and pick it up but I refused stating that there definetly was something wrong with this car and that I was just glad that it didn't happen earlier in the day when I was on I-95 going 80 mph with a semi in back of me. I also told them that I had done some research on my own at Priusonline and yahoo Prius forum and found that there were more people who had the same problem and in most cases it was found to be due to a few codes that needed to be updated in the cars computer. I then asked them to check these specific codes. When I called back the next day they said that they ran the codes and found nothing and had taken the car for a long drive but had no problems. They released it to me and it has driven just as perfectly for me as it did up until the 1 second before it's engine quit without warning. I know that something potentially dangerous happened to my car that day and that there is just as much chance that it will happen again since nothing was fixed. I hope that you can help to avoid something potentialy tragic happening to me or someone else.

24 Engine Stall problem of the 2004 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 04/07/2005

On 4/7/05 I was traveling on the NJ parkway and all of a sudden for no reason my 2004 Prius engine stalled no gas to engine only electric power then the electric power slowly in about lest than 2 minutes went to zero and then I had to coast to a safe spot to pull over on the shoulder. Luckily I was already traveling in the slow right lane, although at 5 pm rush hour its still going 65+ mph, I coasted down to 40 mph until I finally came to a shoulder in the right lane. I checked for anything leaking nothing, and about 10 minutes later it started up. Now all warning lights went on the engine warning failure light which said to bring to dealer right away was on. I brought to dealer the next day a was still able to drive it. They eventually fixed the problem they said it was a computer software problem. They had it from 4/8 to 4/13. It was a very scary situation luckly I was not in the fast lane were I would have been stuck in the middle of fast driving traffic. I just wanted to submit this to put on record just incase there is a bigger problem with other vehicles. The car has run fine since and no problems so far. I read the story from verizon online.

Toyota Prius gas engine stalled 3 times, twice while driving on highway and on ramp. 1) may 13 2004 stalled in busy intersection going about 40 mph, electrical engine still worked, so speed dropped to 20 mph, and consumer stopped on the side. All warning lights were on. Vehicle was towed to Toyota, and they said nothing was wrong except dirty gas. They reset warning lights, and told it was safe. 2) June 1, 2004, while merging onto a highway going up the ramp at about 50 mph car jerked and slowed to about 25 mph without warning. Car behind m had to go onto shoulder to avoid rear ending consumer's vehicle. All warning lights were on again . When checking engine display only electrical power was working again. Gas engine had stalled, causing the immediate decrease in speed, without brake lights so car behind didn't know what was happening. Towed to Toyota.
