2 Car Stall problem of the 2009 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/16/2020

We have a 2009 Prius which stalled on the freeway as my husband was driving it yesterday (10/16/2020). Luckily, even though it was a busy austin freeway, my husband was able to maneuver it to the shoulder and call aaa to tow the car to the service station. On inspection, we were told that the reason for the stall was the failure of the inverter drive pump along with the 12v battery on board. This car was part of the recall for the inverter drive pump and that was replaced by an authorized Toyota service center in 2013 for a similar issue. On the oct 16th, 2020, there were no warning lights - no engine check light and not even the maintenance required light - the car turned on just fine, my husband was able to drive it 5 miles to the freeway, get on the freeway at 60 mph and drive a few miles on it before losing all power in the car. The service tech informs us that the inverter pump can break down due to just regular driving - but there was zero indication that this unit, which apparently is crucial to the car while being driven, was in any danger of imminent failure. I do not know if this part is examined or serviced as part of regular maintenance, but no warnings were raised when this car was last serviced, at an authorized Toyota service station in Dec of 2019.

3 Car Stall problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/14/2020

I was driving my car on the highway in houston (interstate-10) and my car suddenly stopped. I was almost rear-ended due to the car stopping suddenly without the ability to accelerate. There was only a narrow shoulder and I had to wait for the tow truck. The issue is the inverter pump which was a recall in 2011 (12v536000) and the Toyota dealership told me to call Toyota us hq. After two weeks, multiple phone calls, and zero follow through from Toyota, I am still without a functioning car. The total lack of care and accountability from Toyota is appalling and frankly reckless. This is a known issue on the car and I want to make sure this does not happen to someone else. My wife and I are blessed that we were able to walk away from the stall on the highway unscathed; however, this can happen to someone else at night and perhaps that person(s) will not be so lucky.

7 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/19/2019

I was driving on a highway 95 south, almost to delaware, at night in the rain, after 4 hours on the road, everything stopped working. I couldn't accelerate, I had no brakes, and eventually even my lights went out. The entire electrical system was out. I was in heavy traffic, and don't even know how I got off the highway, and to a gas station. The tow truck driver couldn't even jump the battery enough to get the car in neutral, and had a difficult time getting it up on the flatbed to tow it home. I couldn't even lock the doors. I had a new key made at the dealership on 10/17/19 and I was using that key for hours driving to CT and a couple of days later I was half way home when everything in the car stopped working. I was towed to my home in MD because I needed to be able to unpack my car and computer before taking it to the dealership. When the second tow came the next day, I handed him the key by the front door, which was my old key, and he was able to get the car in neutral right away, and at the dealership the car worked just fine. The only difference was the new key. The technician found that "the immobilizer ecu has an intermittent open circuit failure, causing the key to be seen as unauthorized and stall the engine. " from jim coleman Toyota. Apparently there is a part of the computer system that shuts off all systems if it detects an "unauthorized" key--I. E. If it believes the car is being stolen. It seems to me that this is a very dangerous program in this car. I had been using that new key for several days, and had no problem, but for it to decide in the middle of the highway after hours on the road that the key was a fake, I could have been killed or I could have killed someone else. I would much prefer that my car be stollen than that someone might get killed but shutting off everything while it was on the road.

The following day, on Friday 09/20/2019, while I was driving the vehicle lost power and stalled in the middle of the traffic, putting my life and safety at risk and my heath and general well-being. I sent back the vehicle to key west Toyota, and since then the issue is unresolved, and I am not even able to reach anyone on the phone or through the email I sent from key west Toyota website "contact us".

20 Car Stall problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/09/2018

I have been experiencing the safety risks outlined in the following manufacturer recall number: j1v NHTSA recall number: 18v684 I have been dealing with this issue for the past 2 - 3 years and unknowingly may have been spending hundreds of dollars on repairs that may not have needed to be replaced. Currently, my car is not running as I experienced a stall (11/09/2018) while exiting the freeway at a high speed with the screen reading "check hybrid system" and the dash lit up with the yellow triangle and exclamation point. I am not able to accelerate during the stall, brakes are working. This has happened to me countless times, almost always on the freeway or exiting and while traveling at a high speed. Sometimes the vehicle would start back up after a few minutes of being turned off. This particular time (11/09/2018), I coasted the vehicle to a safe spot and the vehicle engine never turned on again. I towed the vehicle to my residence and then to my mechanic. I am only able to put the vehicle in neutral. The motor will not come on at all and the screen reads "check hybrid system". The car had over 1/4 tank of gas at the time. I currently use my vehicle for my livelihood doing independent delivery services such as instacart, doordash, postmates etc. Since there is yet to be a remedy for this situation I want to know what my options are to get back the money I've spent or compensation for this vehicle since it is not usable and unable to be fixed by the manufacturer in a timely manner. I can provide documentation in regards to repairs made as well as visits to Toyota in which they were unaware of the issue.

Car stalled on highway. Was just merging onto highway, the car stalled and died. Was able to very, very slowly pull off to the side of the road . This was a few months after the software update for the inverter. Could have been a catastrophic accident!!! got towed to a Toyota dealer. They replaced the inverter and parts with an updated one and software too. There was no charge to me. However, I believe the 2012 inverter was inferior and all these models should be updated with new inverters. This is an accident waiting to happen!.

35 Car Stall problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/19/2015

I was driving my Prius up mauna kea summit access road on the big island (hawaii) today when the power stalled. I was already at the visitor center (elv. 9,000 ft) so I steered off the road, sat for awhile, then started up the car. It started up but the power seemed off and on. I turned around and headed down the mountain. By the time I got to the bottom of the access road, I had no power and a red triangle light with an exclamation mark came on. Of course I was out in the middle of nowhere, 40 miles from any homes, so I coasted 43 miles down the mountain until I reached hilo town and steered into a gas station. I asked the owner if I could leave the Prius there while I called a tow truck. She said I had to move my Prius into a parking stall. I thought maybe we could push it into the stall. I tried starting the car and the power came on, just like that. But the red triangle light with exclamation mark didn't go away. I managed to drive home, which was only a few miles away. The Prius seems to be driving fine now, with the exception of the red triangle light, but I know something is wrong.
