I was driving aproximately 35 mph and all of a sudden the car stalled and stated, "check hybrid system". Stopped the care right away called my insurance company for emergency road service and had the car towed to a Toyota facility where they diagnosed the problem as a failed inverter, which is part of the hybrid system. This is a safety issue and must be addressed. If I had been on a freeway or in heavy traffic, I could see this being a very dangerous scenario.

38 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/03/2015

Automatic transmission selector shifted from drive (d) into neutral (n). This could be temporarily corrected by manually re-selecting d, but in about 3 seconds, it shifted back to n. We drove by keeping one hand on the lever to keep it in d. After we stopped, the same problem occurred in reverse (r) -- the selector shifted into n after a couple of seconds. Again, we were able to move the vehicle by maintaining pressure in the direction of the r selection. I've found several references to this problem on websites. It appears to be solved by installing a new selector assembly.

41 Car Stall problem of the 2012 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/29/2014

After Toyota power management software recall installed "power management upgrade" software in my car I immediately experienced serious problems with my ignition /start of hybrid/gasoline engine. After pressing ignition, I had to wait 15 to 20 minutes and press start button on/off repeatedly until the gasoline engine ignite but hybrid failed to start. It is not normal because a Prius hybrid engine starts first not the gasoline engine. Toyota has disabled some important functions in its power management recall software update that affects the hybrid engine performance and failure to start. I drive my Prius 3-4 times a month and I did not have any problem before the recall software upgrade because Prius owners manual clearly says that the battery with be disconnected by battery saving function when your car is parked for long time, several days, weeks. In fact, when your car is parked for just days, Toyota power management software (recall) is draining the car battery and reconfiguring the relays to power up the gasoline engine. Toyota owners manual clearly states that when you are parked, "power management software disconnects the auxiliary battery from the hybrid system. " however, after the recall, not only auxiliary battery is not disconnected but there are lots of "activity" in hybrid engine that drains the batteries. I called the Toyota service and they now say you have to keep the car on a charger all the time when parked for several days. Of course , it is a huge safety problem to keep the car on a charger all the time when parked for days because the battery is housed in the cabin and the ventilation does not exist unless you park your car outdoors. At the same time Toyota recommends keeping the car on a charger , it also warns of explosion caused by charging the batteries in a garage.

42 Car Stall problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

I had my car in for 110,000 mile service on April 25. They changed the oil, rotated the tires, installed a new air filter and said that I needed new front brakes and they cleaned and adjusted the back brakes. Yesterday after backing out of the garage the brake light warning light along with the abs and vsc light came on briefly. On interstate 90 nearing downtown cleveland all of these lights came on again along with a noise. I called the Toyota dealer and talked to the service advisor and asked if it was safe to go to cleveland and back and he said if the brakes work, it it probably just a switch and it would be ok to bring it in tomorrow. While I still had him on the phone, we lost all power to the vehicle and it decelerated down to 30 before we were able to reach an exit ramp and stop the car in the grass. I was informed today that the problem is a low volt battery that needs to be replaced for $299. At no time did a low battery light come on and I have not had trouble starting the car nor do I have dim lights. We were fortunate that we were not killed on interstate 90 without power, steering or brakes. I think this is definitely a safety issue that needs to be addressed.

45 Car Stall problem of the 2012 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 06/01/2013

At least 2 or 3 times a week, when shifting the car into drive when the car is stopped, the car goes into reverse instead. The first few times I thought I had made a rushed error, so I started watching quite carefully. You can even be backing up and then brake and shift the car specifically into drive and it stays in reverse. It might take 3 or 4 attempts to get it into drive. I have realized this must be why they installed the beeping in the system to alert you that the car is in reverse, it must be a more pervasive problem than simply in my car. I always visually confirm my motions now, and 2 or 3 times a week I will enter the car and put it in drive and it goes into reverse instead. This is an accident waiting to happen.

Failure Date: 01/17/2013

Incident #1 brake: on January 17, 2013 as I was entering the intersection about 20mph, I applied my brakes, but they went straight to the floor and warning light started blinking. I pressed brakes very hard and car almost stop, then, its brakes gave up. There is sudden slight "unintended acceleration" and I almost hit car front of me. But, I am able to manage to drove the car into the center island. Brake was totally out, and the car started drove by itself. I panicked and pressed power button to shut off the engine. Car drove about 15 feet and stopped. After this incident, I tow my car to the dealer, they told me that lost brake is due to short circuit made domino effect to multiple computers malfunction. They will replace whole computer system, but service man would not guarantee it will never happen again. Incident #2 power failed and shut down while driving at highway. On December, 2012 and January 2013. I was driving at highway and trying to merge into the center line, car stalled and prompted "key does not detect" message on the screen. I almost hit from behind by another car. While the car still has a speed about 40mph, I managed to restart the car by depressed brake and press power bottom. It is true this car lose brake and does slight "accelerate".

After I turned the car off, and then turned it back on, it went into drive but only for a short while before lights started flashing and it stalled again.

51 Car Stall problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 04/01/2012

The 2007 Prius engine and safety warning lights came on while driving and the car stalled on the highway. This has occurred 4 to 5 times in the last 4 months. We have taken it to the Toyota dealership, where they have driven it, kept it overnight, and could not determine the problem. The third time, the dealer said it was the 12 volt battery, which we replaced for $348. 85. The car stalled again - same safety concerns - stalled while driving on the highway. Luckily the car behind me did not hit me and I was able to coast to a side street. There was not any power. The windows and air conditioning were not working as well. I sat in the arizona heat for several minutes and than got it to start by putting the car in park over and over. All safety warning lights were on, as I drove it to the dealership. I was shaking and in tears, fearful for my life and the life of others as I drove it to the dealership less than two months since the 12 volt battery had been replaced. I have gotten the car serviced at the dealership as stated in the manual - everytime. The stalling of the engine while driving and the lack of the dealer to fix the problem is of grave concern. I am very lucky that I have not been rear-ended or killed when the car has stalled. This is a huge safety concern and it appears that this has happened in many Prius vehicles. The dealership keeps saying that they do not know what is the problem. Something needs to happen to protect americans that drive these cars for environmental reasons.

60 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/18/2009

2005 Toyota Prius stalled while driving and in motion. I own a 2005 Toyota Prius that I had just driven on highway about 25 miles and then was on local road. The vehicle stalled without any warning and all lights came on. The car was not responsive to gas and engine was shut. So I had to pull over. The car will not start and had to be towed to the dealer. Fortunately, it was during off peak time and I was on local road. If it had been during peak time and on highway, the consequences would have been significantly different. The dealer had no technical details as to why this happened. He said it was software issue.

61 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/19/2008

I am a rural mail carrier with well over 350,000 miles driven on my route without incident. I drive in all road conditions on gravel and paved roads. I was driving my 2006 Prius on a wet but not muddy gravel road at about 38 mph. The back end began to slide a little. I let up on the gas with no response. I pressed the brake pedal with no response. I went into a deep ditch filled with 3 ft tall grass. I steered to drive the center of the ditch and continued with the brake fully depressed for about 15-20 ft, ripping the tall grass out by the root as I went. The car traveled over a driveway approach, still at 35 mph, striking the approach with the left front corner with enough force to bend the frame and do other serious damage, but with no airbag deployment. I continued over the approach and down the ditch, still at 35 mph, for another 30 or more feet. I was pressing and holding the brake and lifting the gas pedal with my toe. The gas pedal was not stuck and the engine's rpms were low. Only when I put the car in neutral did it slow to stop. It took several attempts to get the car out of this ditch as the traction control kept lurching and stalling. I was able to drive the car out and home without incident. It had to be towed to a dealership for over $4000 in repairs. This was in mid-2008 and I don't know if any corrections made or were even known at that time. This was an absolutely terrifying situation. The car did not respond to any action I took. I had no control what so ever. The car is no longer driven. .

63 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/25/2008

2004 Toyota Prius stalling. After speaking w/ the Toyota consumer helpline, I've learned that the could put a program in the computer that gives you enough time to pull to the side of the road before you stall. I responded that there isn't always a shoulder to pullover to. I started getting warning lights at 6,500 mi. I now have 36,880 mi. In the beginning, the lights were just a joke or a nuisance when I had to bring it in to the dealer. On Nov 11, I stalled along w/ warning lights. You can pull over and shut it off, wait a minute, restart and drive home with warning lights, but they go out when you start up to go to dealer. I brought it to them anyway, but after they looked at the codes I was told it was soft codes and that there was nothing that they could do further. In Dec, I got the warning lights, but no stall. I drove to work and back and the lights went out when I started up to go to dealer . Feb 25 6:30 pm in the merge lane of the I-10,where there isn't a shoulder and cars are coming 40 to 50 mph into the lane to exit. How I didn't get rear-ended, I can't explain. Turned key off, restarted and drove home. Lights went out when it came time to drive to dealer Sunday night for them to check out mon am. I'm trying a new dealer Thursday and I have contacted Toyota consumer line for assistance. I not sure how far anyone can fix this issue. The service dept has updated the computer and has given me a new computer, but they don't have an answer when I inform them that this is getting dangerous, now.

66 Car Stall problem of the 2001 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/16/2007

My 2001 Prius has always been stalling (at least 30 times), usually upon startup, (and especially in hot weather when ac is on at startup) but on 4 occasions, stalls occurred during critical driving in dangerous areas resulting in total power loss and near death experiences. I informed Toyota president watanabe, and they recalled for the "crankshaft position sensor", to fix the stalling problem, but it obviously didn't fix situation because car is still stalling. Dealer is beyond ignorant and clueless and no longer worth talking to, as they are as informed as a rock on a cliff. I am wondering if dealer even performed the recall fix properly. Would like a trustworthy Toyota technician from japan's tmc (a japanese person) to personally inspect my car.

67 Car Stall problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 04/07/2007

Indicator lights flashed. Malfunction indicator lamp stayed on. At 2,644 miles, 12 v. Battery dead & replaced. I was told to keep the gas tank half or a quarter full or the reserve gas tank would cause the car to run on battery. The battery might have died because the car sat too long before it was sold/at 8,879 miles, I went in. After filling the gas tank & taking out the nozzle, gas spewed & bubbled out. The car stalled while driving slowly & while in park. Indicator lights flashed. The malfunction indicator lamp and master warning lights stayed on. It took 5 min. To turn off the car. I started the car. Those lights stayed on. I was told I left the "trunk door" open & ran down the battery. (not true. ) there is a gasket around the access hole and if a person "is a little bit off," the gas will regurgitate. (I was not " off" & did not top off the tank. ) they reprogrammed the computer. The gas tank had not been filled so I knew they did not fill the gas tank and try to recreate the situation as they said they would. I bought gas at a different pump. I stopped at a stop light. I could feel a loss of power in the car. When I pushed the gas pedal, the car would not move. I turned the car off and on 3 times before it would move. It crept slowly through the intersection as the traffic signal turned red. I took the car in at 8,936 miles. I was told if my problem is associated with the battery that was taken out of my car, it is not at repair person's responsibility because he did not touch my battery. When a battery is disconnected for a certain amount of time, if something is not reset, it could cause problems. Then, he said no trouble found/my car stalled and/or had a loss of power. I took it in at 9,014 miles. No trouble found. I was told that my problems could have been caused by a faulty gas pump overfilling my tank. The gas station is new. The manager said the pumps were inspected. If there were a faulty pump, everyone would have problems.
