1 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 03/17/2012

I was entering a parking space, I approached the space about 5 mph. The vehicle suddenly accelerated, the steering locked and the brakes went to the floor. The vehicle jumped the curbing and hit the truck in the next righthand space. It connected with the trucks left front fender. That stopped the vehicle.

2 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2005 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 06/25/2011

Driving north on i75 at approximately 65 mph. The gas gauge had 3 bars illuminated. The vsc warning light and the red triangle with the exclamation point came on. I lost the ability to accelerate and the car suddenly went dead. Luckily I was able to make to relative safety on the side to interstate. The car was towed to a dealer who said the car ran out gas! they also said that the "fuel register unit was operating as designed. " how was that possible? the charge? over $1200! according to Toyota corporate and the dealership, repeated unsuccessful attempts to start the car will, by design, cause irreparable damage to the ecu code id box which can cost $1200 - $1800 to replace. This "design" is apparently in the name of anti-theft protection. (why not just immobilize the car instead of partial self-destruction?) even given the high extent and documented history of gas gauge display malfunctions and many other related electrical problems, Toyota corporate would offer no financial assistance, no reimbursement of any portion of the repair. This is the second time the car has lost all power in the middle of heavy traffic. That time, 08/09/10, the water pump failed. Subsequent to that, I received a recall notice to replace the water pump.

8 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/06/2010

Leased a 2010 Toyota Prius 3 mths ago. Right from the start gives very low mileage: 39-41mpg and have been tracking it between every fill up. Always filled up 10 gallons and reset trip meter every time. Gives only 390-410 miles per fill up. Complained to the dealer service center at greentree Toyota and they say that nothing is wrong with the car and the mileage should improve after 10,000miles. Right now the car has over 5200miles. For the last 2 mths, I started noticing that the speedometer is reading higher too. If the roadside radar shows 35, the Prius speedometer shows 37 as the speed. An overage of 2 miles. So, if when I have driven the car 900miles in actuality, the odometer would read 1000miles and hence the car is aging at a faster rate as far as mileage is concerned and also that the fuel economy is affected even further since the car is not giving even the 39-41miles per gallon. The dealership manager charlie moneco tells me that it is normal industry standards for the speedometer to be off and that these are not certified speedometers. The dealership service center manager [xxx] tells me that there is nothing wrong with the car and that it is within legal limits for the speedometer to be off. The dealership service center technical manager [xxx] blank tells me that they test drove to like vehicles and found that both vehicles did the same mileage and hence the conclusion that there is nothing wrong with my car. I questioned the testing process since there is no outside source like a radar that is clocking any of the cars to tell which one is at what speed. Called Toyota motor corpn. At 1-800-331-4331 and spoke to [xxx] and she says that if the dearlership and its service center is saying that they can do nothing, then they stand by the dealership. Toyota cannot help me any further. The case number from Toyota is # [xxx] lodged today 12. 06. 2010. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

9 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/28/2010

On 7/26/10 I purchased 2008 certified Toyota Prius. I didn't receive car until 7/28/10. I took the car back to dealership on 7/29/10 because the inside cabin smells like gas after the car is turned on for about 5 minutes. Dealership confirmed that it did smell like gas and it was dangerous to drive. Currently Toyota is looking at cause of problem. I fear this car might be a dangerous combination of high power voltage and gas fumes. Vehicle was not properly inspected and sold in a dangerous condition. Dealership I purchased from is longo Toyota located in el monte, CA.

11 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2004 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/13/2010

2004 Toyota Prius accelerates due to gas pedal getting stuck in the floor mat. This morning I was driving my Toyota Prius 2004 that I bought from the original owner who mentioned all recall issues were addressed by Toyota dealership. He mentioned the dealer shaved off the gas pedal to make it shorter. But today, while on I 495 going eastwards just before entering the hov lane, I pressed the gas pedal all the way down to over take another slow vehicle. The car engine kept raising noise, and car started to accelerate on its own. I braked, the car slowed a bit but engine kept running fast. . . I realized this is potentially same issue that people reported on press and with lot of struggle trying to brake and slow down, realized and put the car into n, neutral position. I am lucky to know this from media reports, otherwise I would have been another dead guy on a Prius! while I was still on highway, needing to maintain speed I put the car back on drive mode, d and the problem continued. I realized, I can lift the gas pedal with my left foot, and succeeded in untangling the pedal from the floor mat. After I did that it was fine. I arrived at work, but with extreme shock and disappointment. I am wondering how this problem can still remain after a recall repair is done on this vehicle. This is completely unacceptable and my life was in total risk and I survived today purely because of my technical skills and knowledge about this car issue. I am an engineer in profession, a mechanical engineer with a masters degree and I understood how to react. If it was for my other family members in this situation the outcome would have been totally different. I am very very disappointed with Toyota corporation and also with you, the NHTSA for not making sure that all Prius out there are safety compliant. This is really terrible ! . . . Because its a known issue, and old issue that should have been corrected. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

17 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/31/2009

On 31 December 2009 my 08 Prius was slowed down prior to turning into a driveway, when it suddenly accelerated. It went out of control and crashed into trees and a powerpole. The floor mat, that according to Toyota is supposed to cause this, was properly attached to the pegs in the floor, and in proper place even after the crash recently, on 6 April, 2010, I again experienced a sudden unexplained acceleration when going about 5/10 miles per hour. It lasted about four seconds and did not result in an accident.

18 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2005 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/15/2009

About 2 years ago, on route 840 in utica, I floored the gas pedal on my 2005 Toyota Prius to pass a car. The Prius does not have a lot of power, so flooring it was sometimes necessary to pass uphill. When I took my foot off the gas pedal, the car was still accelerating. I touched the brakes. Nothing. Finally, I pushed down hard on the brakes and got the car to the side of the road and turned it off. I have rubber mats. I thought one of them had gone under the pedal. "case solved" so I thought. Last December, again passing a truck uphill on route 840, I floored the pruis gas pedal. The same thing happened! this time I knew it was not the mat because I had drilled holes in it and attached it to the mat posts. It was inches away from the gas pedal when this happened. I pushed the brakes down hard and struggled the car to the side of the road right before the lanes merged and the truck would have cut me off (into a swamp). The brakes, with a burning smell, fought the racing car. I finally got it turned off. When I turned it back on, the gas was still racing! I turned it off again. After waiting,it started normally. It has done it every time the pedal was floored(seldom). I went to the internet and found this had been a problem and Toyota was planning a Prius recall, with parts to repair available in April. I was very scared to drive the car, but can't afford to sell it (wrong) or buy another. So I decided to wait for the recall. I have been driving on pins and needles since. And now there is no recall for the Prius gas pedal! I'm glad for the brake recall because my Prius has done that once too, but freaked out about no sticking gas pedal recall for the Prius. I went to the dealer today for 115,000k service and told them about this. "technician can not replicate problem". Just like so many stories from other Toyota owners on the web. This will be many a Prius driver's epitaph without government action. Please make Toyota fix these sticking Prius accelerators.

19 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2004 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/19/2009

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Prius. While driving between 40-45 mph the gasoline motor would fail, and then cause the vehicle to stall without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer twice. The battery was replaced first, and then the fuel system was flushed. The second repair corrected the problem, but the problem of the vehicle locking in park was not addressed. The current mileage was 32,100. The failure mileage was 31,999. Updated 01/12/10 all of the alarm lights on the dashboard had illuminated when accelerating. When the consumer stopped the vehicle and switched to park, he was unable to shift the vehicle into neutral. After about 15 minutes, the consumer was able to shift to neutral. The instrumental panel did not display a clear explanation that the internal combustion engine was not starting and that the vehicle was running on the battery only. Updated 01/15/10.

21 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 09/10/2009

Toyota Prius 2010 going downhill pushing the brakes to stop before red light in the uneven pavement the car suddenly loses all fours wheels brakes for a fraction of a second . When the wheel that passed the road bump the brakes come back again and stop the car. It happened three time in the last 4 months that I have the car. Same car defect in the fuel system. After leaving in the garage for 5 consecutive days, the car did not started automatically as it should do. It made for several seconds a metal to metal noise before the engine finally started to funtioning as usual. Seams like the engine starved of fuel. Same car excessive vibration on the driver side door panel when the radio or music is on. It stops when I hold with my knee tha panel.

22 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2009 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/17/2009

I have written Toyota on several occasions and they have failed to respond. I own a 2009 Prius. First, navigation system is very poor and sends you to wrong addresses. On Aug 17,2009,the fuel gauge was at one bar and a red triangle came on dash and car started pulling and dragging. I pulled off of the road on the shoulder and tried to restart car. It started again and then it pulled and dragged and I got back on the shoulder. It would not move. I tried to place the vehicle in neutral but it would only stay in park. This created a dangerous problem especially not being able to move the car and then the tow truck had to make arrangements because car would not leave park. As I waited for 2 hours for the tow truck, the hazard warning lights I turned on and then they only would blink on the right side of the vehicle. This is very dangerous since it was my left side that was exposed to traffic. I was later told that the car ran out of gas. This does not explain the nonfunctional hazard light system, the vehicle being frozen in park and the pulling and dragging on the highway. Was the gas gauge malfunctioning? I have written Toyota many times and completed surveys explaining these concerns and they fail to acknowledge or respond. I think a safety issue is raised.

23 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/13/2009

Toyota Prius, 2008, involved in accident , August 13, 2009 when it accelerated rapidly out of control after being at a stop sign for 4 minutes stopped in a line of traffic, hitting car in front and being very difficult to bring to a stop. Went from 0 to 45 mph very quickly and hard to stop . Toyota has not responded to complaint or my insistence that it be fixed. Was deemed by judge who heard the appeal of ticket to be a mechanical failure. First accident for me in 48. 5 years of driving. Initially I thought it was brake failure, but after the info came out, it matches exactly the accelerator sticking that has been described. Filed complaint with Toyota in October and have not heard back. Haven was the contact, claim number at Toyota is #0910145720. Also notified dealer where it was purchased and have not heard from them. Was assured I'd hear in January and got a letter indicating that I should take the floor mat out. It happened again in November of 2009, although I immediately recognized it and got the car stopped quickly. I'm now afraid to drive it but need my car to work.

24 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2009 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 03/20/2009

2009 Toyota Prius ran out of gas when it "should" have had 3 gallons left (based on stated fuel capacity of 11. 9 gallons, and on fuel gauge). Apparently the fuel bladder does not contain a reliable amount of gas when filled, and the gas gauge warning (which the manual says goes on with about 3 gallons left) may not come on until less than a half a gallon remains. This is dangerous.

25 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/09/2009

Over period of several weeks car would refuse to accept fuel. Stated capacity is over 11 gallons. Vehicle has never taken more than 9 gallons to fill up at an indicated empty point (1 bar on fuel gauge). Car would not accept fuel without burping fuel all over the side of the car and pavement surrounding. Each successive fill up would require less fuel before burping at fuel cutoff from pump. Toyota claimed that I had been doing to many Mini fill-ups (not intentionally since gauge was malfunctioning). Toyota dealership "reset" fuel system early March 2009 and since has functioned properly. Believe Toyota (and us gov't agency that approved this faulty system in the first place) should replace fuel system with version the europeans are using as I haven't seen any complaints in europe on this issue.

26 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2001 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/05/2008

Accelerator pedal on 2001 Toyota Prius failed. Toyota knows about the problem and refuses to acknowledge. They have had enough fixes that they had to go back and fix the repair manual. They chose to ignore the issue and say it's not a problem. Luckily I was driving on a non major road and was not killed.

27 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2009 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/01/2008

The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Prius. During the winter months, the vehicle became difficult to add fuel. The dealer has provided the contact with several options to avoid this problem which included turning the nozzle sideways and taking the nozzle out from time to time while adding fuel. The contact found that these techniques are difficult to perform. She also stated that the safety risk is higher since the limited amount of gas could cause the engine to shut off without warning. The current mileage was 9000 and the failure mileage was 320. Updated 09/08/09 updated 09/29/09.

28 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2001 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/17/2008

I own a 2001 Prius. My car has the same problem for which the NHTSA issued a safety alert in 2005, failure of the main computer, resulting in the gasoline engine's shutting itself off. The computer failed after one year of service. It took Toyota 18 months to identify the problem. I have invoices documenting all the events that occurred. The dealer had me replace the accelerator pedal assembly at my cost of $450 and replaced the wrong computer (the one controlling the power steering). This month I gave up and had a competent dealer replace the ecm. The documents I received included technical service bulletin of June 12, 2003. The bulletin states that for the ecm in the 2001-2003 model year Prius the ecm part number has been revised. The relevant information table is labeled "production change information. " in other words the ecm in my car was defective from the time the car left the factory but Toyota is refusing to pay for the repairs because now the car is too old. This car is a lemon. It is one of the first Prius generation marketed in the u. S. The power steering had to be replaced twice. There were 2 or 3 other recalls as well. However, I am a retired professor and now that I have fixed the problem at my expense I need to keep the car in order to get to my part-time teaching job. The repairs to the ecm alone have cost me $1848. 19. I want Toyota to reimburse me. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. By the way, a safety alert on these models as used purchases might be a good idea. G. Jay weinroth.

29 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 09/23/2007

On September 23, 2007, I was traveling on I-70 returning from bloomington indiana to webster groves missouri. As I was driving the add fuel light came on. Based on my previous experience, I knew I had at least 40 miles. All of a sudden, all of the warning lights came on and the car lost power. Luckily I was able to maneuver to the shoulder. I got the car to go a little further before it died on the ramp of the next exit. The total miles traveled from the time the add fuel light came on until the car completely died was 18 miles. I notified Toyota and their response was that I ran out of gas. They told me I should have 50 miles or so from when the add fuel light came on before running out of gas. They could not explain why I only got 18 miles. I told them that I believe there is something wrong with the fuel sensor and that this is a safety issue since my car died while traveling on an interstate. Toyota said it was not a safety issue since they have not had many complaints about this. For what it is worth, it was a very hot day and I had been traveling about 3 hours or so. My guess is that the fuel sensor is not accurate under these conditions. I asked Toyota why I only got 18 miles after the add fuel light came on. The representative could offer no explanation. At no time did Toyota check the fuel sensor.

30 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/20/2007

Twice in one week, on the highway, with one led segment remaining on the fuel gauge, the car quit dead and rolled out luckily to the side of the road. Out of fuel. Low level light came on each time. Genuine hassles getting to a gas station on foot on the interstate to get a container of gas to get running again. Two different Toyota service managers insisted nothing is wrong with the measuring system and that one should never trust a gauge or allow the level to get near zero. Not even one segment low! never, in all my years of driving have I had a car run out of gas with fuel indicated on the gauge. We additionally own another Prius (2005) which can run safely and not quit shortly after the low fuel warning comes on or all segments vanish. This is unsafe as one is forced to do emergency evasive action to the side of the road, then risk life walking on the interstate. Our solution the last few year is never do we let fuel level get below 2 led segments since.

31 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/20/2006

The mileage is between 30 and 35 mpg, which is a long ways from the sticker claim. The headlight goes on and off intermittently, even though replaced several times. Second headlight is also failing. The blower works only intermittently, usually after hitting a large bump in the road.

32 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 03/19/2006

A gasoline and or oil smell in the car that permeates everything in the car. My clothes, computer bag, papers, just everything that comes in contact with the inside of the car. I also get sick from the odor ie headaches, nausea, blurred vision, dizziness. I also have a burning taste in my mouth, throat and eyes. I have been to the doctors and they there is no other reason for me to be feeling the way I do and that it is the environment of my car that is producing this very serious irritant . The dealer service center said it is from the broken bearing that was replaced, broken and not my fault. This must also be a recall problem because they said it happens alot.

33 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2005 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/25/2005
