I was getting off the freeway and driving 40 mph on the off ramp, when the 2001 Toyota Prius did a unwanted left turn of the steering wheel, I tried to turn the steering wheel back to correct the car angle, but he steering force was too strong for me to correct back to straight ahead, the left front car the concrete barrier, and the car turn 360 degree around. The rear right bumper hit the concrete barrier. Lucky there was no other cars around me.

39 Steering problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/22/2019

The steering intermediate extension shaft in this car was recalled and replaced in 2015. This part was noticed to be failing again by the mechanic while in for an unrelated issue. The mechanic deemed the car to be unsafe to drive as if this part failed while driving I would have been without any steering. Both the dealer and I feel that Toyota should be responsible for the repairs, which they have declined, but equally as important that all the other cars involved in this recall should be checked. There is also no warning light or any indication for the driver that they may be unsafe. The recall notice would not scan but Toyota reference number is below. Ref. # t-cp-c2t, date of issue: nover 14, 2012.

56 Steering problem of the 2005 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/09/2018

The steering on my 2005 Prius with roughly 119,000 miles failed. Fortunately it was at a low speed and on a side street but without any ability to steer the car, it could have been really bad if on a main road or at a higher speed! the car is currently with a Toyota dealer and the cause is yet to be determined. Toyota stated there is no recall outstanding on the car and it would be out of pocket. There was, however, a prior recall for steering issues. When it failed, I was able to move it back and forth but the wheels would not turn at all.

57 Steering problem of the 2017 Toyota Prius

Car was on 2 lane blacktop in 40 mph zone driving apx 35 mph, a female, responsible owner/driver age 79 was driving when suddenly, without any warning, comes to near halt in road and pulls/hard to right hand side of shoulder off the road. Driver had no control over direction or speed before finally able to stop car on top of ditch. Driver was able to get car to stall/stop engine before reaching ditch and possibly a turnover. Driver had never been so fearful in her life, had she been unable to stop car it would have driven her over. Reported situation to local Toyota dealership and they stated they could not;t find anything wrong with car sending driver back out on road with car, this is very serious situation. Thankful she was on small country ioad and not on busy hwy or this car would have "pulled/lead" her into other traffic, or worse, a sidewalk full of people and or children. She had no control of car for what seemed like a full minute or more.

59 Steering problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 09/24/2018

I was already driving (highway) for over 30 minutes this morning (24 sept 2018) and exited to the city street. After making a right turn (about a minute after the turn and now on a straight road) I momentarily lost control of steering - the car just moved into the opposite flow of traffic and I slowed down and try to control it and I swayed both ways before I was stable again. (luckily there were only a few cars on both sides of traffic) it happened so fast (2-3 seconds max) and while a warning light came on the dashboard and an audible sound - I was not able to see what it was. I managed to drive onto a vacant parking lot, observed the steering and when I felt I had control I drove another 10 minutes to work, this time had no problems nor signs of a problem. It was lightly raining and road was wet.

Horn stopped working. Only works when steering wheel is turned left or right. Forums have posted that it could be the spiral cable from other vehicle owners. This replacement is over $1,000.

62 Steering problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 04/04/2018

The vehicle was having issue with the steering locked up when turning with motion about 20+mph. The hybrid system is not as advertised the 50mpg in any way as it only gets average about 35mpg. The vehicle has 87000 miles and the old symptoms from second generation followed suit with it. The dash went totally off when weather is cold and suddenly turned back on when it gets warm. I had driven a few miles without the dash on and it was a bad experience since I cannot figure out the speed or what is going on. The steering is the major issue as we dare not to drive the car and the technicians from the dealer said nothing wrong with the vehicle but third party technicians recommend to take to Toyota for recall. U turns are the worse that locked the steering and the car almost come to a stop with beeping alarms.

64 Steering problem of the 2014 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/01/2018

Turning the steering wheel more than quarter turn. Rattling, clicking noise is apparent out of center steering console. Turning the steering wheel more than 360 degrees. There are several rattles and clicks in the wheel. Driving is not affected. It feels as if something is loose inside the airbag. The main concern is a feeling of looseness near the airbag center. The vehicle can be stationary in motion. It does not matter if the vehicles in motion. The only thing in motion is the steering wheel.

2017 Toyota Prius two. Consumer writes in regards to swaying and wobbling while vehicle is in motion.

66 Steering problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/13/2017

I had been driving the car and had experienced the loss of power described in recent articles as being an inverter problem (that was the subject of a software update by Toyota that may not have fixed the issue). After experiencing this issue several times, my autobody shop recommended replacing the throttle body as the diagnostic codes were not 100% clear what the problem was. I have replaced the throttle body and not had the issue since, but I thought I would report this just in case this is related to the inverter issue. The issue I had was exactly as described -- driving the car, then suddenly losing power and practically unable to move the vehicle (I was able to drive it maybe 3 mph with no power steering, barely got out of an intersection in front of oncoming traffic one time it happened). This happened at various times, always while moving, both on the highway and on city streets, straight/turning. The only time it didn't seem to happen was when stationary. . Read more...

67 Steering problem of the 2014 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/11/2017

As I tried to make a right turn at a very busy intersection, I heard a strange noise and totally lost control of the steering wheeling. I turned the steering wheel 360 degrees all the way, around and around, but the car kept going straight. . . After a minute or so, the coordination between the steering wheel and the wheels re-established and I could manage to drive to a nearby parking lot. The situation happened again in the parking lot before it came back to normal. We took the car to a local Toyota dealership and left it there for 2 days. However, technicians said they could not duplication the issue meaning they could not find any problem with it. They told us that it is probably the electricity part! we are very unsatisfied with the answer and very concerned about the unsafe condition it may cause.

68 Steering problem of the 2014 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/07/2017

I bought a 2014 Toyota Prius c 10-07-2017 from carvana with less than 30,000 miles. With 2 new tires in the front bridgestone ecopia 175/65 r15. It wobbles at speeds above 50 mph and sloppy steering the road was dry. Well at that time the the car was still under warrant with carvana so if I change my mind about it I could get another car. Searched the web for similar complaints and found a few. So we took the car to a place that sold bridgestone tires to replace the rear tires that were original but goodyear brand same size. So now we have 4 tires the same and quess what happen the same wobbly driving and sloppy steering at 50 mph. So we took the car back to the shop. The mechanic said I guess that is why they put the 2 new tires in the front to corrrect the problem but what you need after my test drive is a 4 wheel alignment. So I said go ahead and do it. During the process the alignment mechanic guy said the front passed but the rear failed. So they called Toyota dealership and asked if they were special shims to fix the rear alignment. The Toyota dealership said there are no parts for that because that car model does not require a rear alignment. The c in Toyota Prius means c is for city driving only. We were stunned. I said I knew they had a reason why they got rid of the car but can you fix it ? the mechanic said it is a possible factory defect and we see some of those sometimes but I think we can fix it and solve your problems with that car. We can use some shims that are made for a different type of Toyota car and see if we can get it in proper alignment. I said I am willing to gamble on your expertise go ahead and do it. It is still under warranty with carvana but I do like the hatchback car. After the work was done the test drive proved the success and the problem was gone. Oh and by the way it drives great on the highway and I still own it.

69 Steering problem of the 2017 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/31/2017

Toyota Prius prime 2017 lane departure warning with steering assist. This steering assist function does not work as it does in any other Toyota model. I have spoken with Toyota engineering and met with a Toyota technical representative and they admit that the steering assist function does not work as it does in any other Toyota model. As you will see from my attached document this function really doesn't work at all. I am not sure if this is a regulated safety feature or not but it was suggested by a Toyota employee that I make the NHTSA aware of this failure as it could be a safety concern that should be looked at. I have driven at least 5 Prius prime advanced and all have this problem in that the steering assist function does not work in any of them even though it is advertised and sold to the consumer as a integral part of the Toyota safety suite that is on all Toyota vehicles. This steering assist function does work on all of the other Toyota models as advertised and as a consumer would expect. Please review my attached document that describes the problem and my attempts to get Toyota to correct this problem. The stock answer I have received from most Toyota representatives is that the steering assist "works as it is engineered to do" my stock answer to this is why does it function differently than every other vehicle equipped with the Toyota safety suite. I have never received a coherent reply to that question.
