The rubber rear hatch release button (wide rubber piece which activates an electrical switch) first became sticky and black rubber would stick you your hand. Then the rubber piece hardened and became so hard (and cracked) that the rear hatch release does not work. This is a safety issue in addition to making the trunk unusable. Toyota owners of this model year frequently report this problem in all climates, Toyota clearly has a manufacturing defect in the rubber material they used for this model year and should perform these repairs for no charge.

Vehicle is extremely, almost dangerously, sensitive to cross winds and wake turbulence from larger vehicles, trucks specifically.
- the contact purchased a 2007 Toyota Prius on February 28, 2007 with 4 miles from beaver Toyota of santa fe new mexico. The day after purchasing the vehicle while driving over 40 mph it did not drive straight, it moved left to right. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer, and was told that this was how the vehicle drove. The service manager explained that these vehicles had many complaints because of the way the vehicle was aerodynamicly made, the vehicle tended to move from side to side going over 40 mph on the highway. The failure mileage was 20, and the current mileage was 300 miles. Updated 04/09/07.
On our 2006 Toyota Prius, purchased June 27, 2006, night-time driving vision is impaired by the reflection of the dashboard onto the windshield. The image of the dashboard information lights is strongly reflected right into the center of the driver's vision necessitating looking under, over, or around the reflections. Poooooor dashboard design. Very disappointing and scary.

I was involved in a low-speed accident in which the brakes in my car (2005 Toyota Prius) did not slow or stop the car and caused me to run into the back of another vehicle. No one was injured, the airbags did not deploy and there was no damage to the vehicle my car collided with. The exterior damage to my car was estimated approximately $6700. Soon after, I was notified by the insurance company that my car was totaled due to damage sustained to the hybrid system. I requested that the event data recorder be downloaded to determine if there had been a failure in the brake system. My insurance company refused and Toyota appears to have ignored my request. I also find it disturbing and curious that the front end and hence the hybrid system was destroyed beyond repair in an accident so minor that the police would not even give it a report number.

2005 Toyota Prius, when driving at night there is a green streak of light about seven inches across and about an inch high on windshield. This streak obscures the consumer's vision. The consumer believes the light comes from the light that is projected onto the dash and that the dash is not configured properly. The consumer contacted both the dealer and manufacturer and they both indicated that the light was normal. Updated 03/28/06.
I noticed road noise and determined that it was a tire noise. Since I was traveling out of my home state - I took the car to be checked by a local tire center. He guy looked at the tire and immediately pointed out the uneven wear of the front tires - could feel that the steel belt was almost exposed. I had just made a 1000 mile trip and feel lucky that the tires didn't blow. At the tire dealership, they wondered whether this was an ongoing problem with the Toyota Prius - they had another Prius in with the same problem. He indicated that it looked like an alignment problem. When he tried to adjust the rear alignment, he was unable to reset it to the recommended specifications. The same was true of the other Prius that he had in the shop. So of course I should expect the new tires to have uneven wear. Now I am very concerned about the safety of this car. At least I'm aware of the problem, but what about all the other Prius owners that are in danger?? this certainly appears to be a design flaw - there should be a recall!! I have had regular maintenance at the recommended time by the Toyota dealership. No one ever indicated that there was a problem with the alignment or any other kind of tire problem. But after reading all the other complaints on this web site regarding the tires, I feel the car is unsafe. I will be going to my Toyota dealership & I know they will cover the cost of the new tires but that doesn't fix the problem. I believe Toyota needs to make Prius owners aware of the defect before someone is involved in a serious accident.

The vehicle fish tailed when driving on a windy day or when an 18 wheeler passes or if a sudden lane change is made. This started occurring only when speed was at 55 mph, but has progressed. Currently, it's occurring at 50 mph and slower. The dealership replaced all four tires, the control bushing, and the rear struts in an attempt to correct the problem. But problem recurred.
