Automatic transmission slips into neutral unexpectedly, and when it does, often you can't get it out of neutral without turning car off. This has an electronic shift selector. This appears to be a rampant problem with this car. Do an internet search on 2008 Prius slips into neutral and you will see many people are having this issue. Very dangerous when this happens on the highway.

2 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2014 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/28/2019

City street . . . Pressed on gas after the light changed and it did not go forward and then waivered for awhile. I was very close to home. I do not know how it will work tomorrow . No warning lights were on. It has acted funny before like this on highway trips and then it wouldn't do it. Toyota dealers do not even know about them and it is annoying. It feels like a transmission slipping but has less than 70,000 miles. I thought maybe heat is doing it but now that it is out of warranty ie over 5 years old, I do not know what to do. I am unsure what causes this since no lights warn anything is wrong.

3 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/19/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Prius. The vehicle was in parked in the driveway and another vehicle bumped into it causing the gear shift to move into reverse. The vehicle traveled over an 18 inch snow bank and crashed into a tree. The front and rear bumpers were damaged. There were no injuries. The vehicle was driven to the dealer. A representative from the manufacturer performed a diagnostic test and found that the gear shift being placed in and out of park several times caused the gears to slip into neutral and then into reverse. The contact confirmed that the vehicle was in park. The contact was not offered any assistance with the repair. The failure mileage was 44,000.
