The contact owns a 2012 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that she noticed that when the lights were viewed through the windshield, there was an abnormal prism effect. The contact also stated that there was an image located above and below the actual light source that occurred with all light sources such as headlights, tail lights, street lights, traffic lights, etc. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where a technician advised that no repairs were needed and that the issue was not a defect but rather a characteristic of the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised that the vehicle was not included in any recalls. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 7,200. Updated 12/10/12 the consumer stated the vehicle's windshield was replaced once. The replacement windshield had the same defect the case was taken to arbitration when Toyota refused to find a remedy for the safety defect. Arbitration was lost due to "lack of evidence". Updated 12/18/2012.
Starting on/about February 1st, 2011, any point source of light (I. E. , traffic signal, headlight, taillight) viewed through the front windshield creates an optical effect of multiple images. The effect typically manifests as a triple image when the light is viewed from a distance -- one false image, each above and below the actual light. As the light source is approached, the images converge on the center (actual) light source, going from three (one false above and below) to eventually one image when the light source is very close (such as a car passing, going in the opposite direction). This effect has been continuously occurring since it was first noticed, and it occurs with all sources of light. It is most noticeable and distracting with headlights approaching from the opposite direction at night (especially a dark night on a dark road).

Starting on/about 12 October 2011, any point source of light (I. E. , traffic signal, headlight, taillight) viewed through the front windshield creates an optical effect of multiple images, somewhat like viewing the light through a prism. The effect typically manifests as a quintuple image when the light is viewed from a distance -- two false images each above and below the actual light. As the light source is approached, the images converge on the center (actual) light source, going from five to three (one false above and below) to eventually nearly one image when at a stop line. This effect has been continuously occurring since October 2011, and it occurs with all sources of light. Red and yellow colors are the most visible/pronounced, but it is also seen with green or other colors of light. Although the vehicle is drivable, the prismatic effect is very distracting, especially in an urban/suburban environment where there are many traffic signals and other vehicles in the area.

With 34,000 miles on my 2004 Prius, the glass has developed severe pitting, not only on the windshield, but on their side windows as well. When the sun hits the windshield visibility is greatly reduced.
On our 2006 Toyota Prius, purchased June 27, 2006, night-time driving vision is impaired by the reflection of the dashboard onto the windshield. The image of the dashboard information lights is strongly reflected right into the center of the driver's vision necessitating looking under, over, or around the reflections. Poooooor dashboard design. Very disappointing and scary.
I would like to request a recall of the 2005, Toyota Prius. When I am driving at night there is a green streak of light about seven inches across and about an inch high on windshield, directly in my line of vision. It is dangerous because it obscures some of my vision and it is distracting. The green streak of light appears to come from the light that is projected onto the dashboard to show the mph. Apparently, the dashboard is not configured properly, and some of that light shines past it onto the windshield. I have contacted both o local Toyota dealers about this problem. Neither would fix it. Both said the green streak of light on the windshield at night was normal for the Toyota Prius. So I called the main Toyota office in torrance, CA, and they said the same thing. Also, they stated it was part of the Prius design, that was the word they used - design. They further indicated they were aware of the problem, and they there was no solution in place for it. They offered no help or suggested whatsoever for fixing this dangerous problem. The green streak of light partially obstructs the driver's vision at night, making it a safety hazard.
