Twice in the last 24 hours there has been sudden acceleration when braking for a stop.
When brakes are applied engine attempts to maintain speed, making it difficult to stop. After car has stopped, stepping on the gas pedal again may only allow car to move forward very slowly. This started happening within the last month and has occurred four times so far. It happens with the car in motion and either turning or going straight. So far all incidents were while driving on city streets. All safety recalls are up to date. Dealer says applying brake pressure disengages the accelerator, but this is not happening. The gas pedal moves freely and there is no interference from the floor mat. The car is at the dealer now.
Toyota defects.
Vehicle frame chassis corrosion unsafe defects.

Driving down road at 20-25 mph. Suddenly the right front wheel locked up (brake pedal was * being pressed) and began the abs shudder as if vehicle was braking on ice. Vehicle pulled hard to the right; this occurred several times over the next few minutes. After car warmed up it didn't happen again, but recurred the next morning after starting out. Searched internet and found other Toyota drivers had experienced the same problem and 'resolved' it by removing fuses for abs braking system, rendering it inoperative. Car brakes normally now with no issues, but abs, brakes, vsc and other dash lights are on because abs system is disabled.

We purchased our Toyota 2006 rav 4 new and have had trouble with unintended acceleration, as well as sluggish throttle response intermittently since our purchase. We are concerned of the potential of an accident. The most recent occurrence was on Feb. 28, 2010 when I was in a parking garage on a flat surface. When I depressed the gas pedal our vehicle did not move for three seconds then surged forward faster than it should have. These cars are unsafe and should be recalled along with the others that Toyota continues to deny there are safety issues pending with these vehicles.
I wish to report an ongoing problem with the abs braking system on my 2006 rav. It seems similar to that described for the new prius models. When braking on slippery or bumpy surfaces, usually at final braking at a stop sign, the system seems to take over and I have no braking control. (it is as if a pre-set braking program goes into effect. ) it happens most often at low speeds, just as I brake for the stop -- and should have stopped easily. I have had many, many incidents where this has caused me to slide through a stop sign into an intersection. This has been a recurrent problem this winter, and is a serious concern for driving in minnesota winters.
Purchased a 2006 Toyota Rav4 new in 2006. Replaced new brake shoes in early 2008 on July 19th brakes stopped working, but was able to avoid accident after two years I am told that the brake booster was leaking.

My Rav4 started giving me brake problems within 5 months, about 5,500 miles. I took it over to the dealership where I bought the Rav4. They said the rotors had to be cut, so they cut them and put new brakes on them. The problem started again in less than a month. I drive a lot in the highway, so I put some miles in the Rav4. I took it to the dealership where I bought it again, again and again because they kept on making noise and I was afraid the Rav4 wouldn't stop when I put on the brakes. After the 3rd try because the brakes were still making noise and they weren't stopping correctly and the people at the dealership looked at me like I was crazy. They said the car was safe to drive. I changed to another Toyota dealership. At this dealership, first they said nothing was wrong, but they took a ride with me in the Rav4 and realized what I said. They put new front rotors and new front brakes. When I went to get the Rav4, I told them the noise was still there. They said to try it out for at least 500 miles before they put the rear rotors. That was at 18,000 miles. At 19,000 miles I took it back because the noise was still there. They put the rear rotors and brakes. Now, after five months and 8,000 miles it started all over again. This time, the lights are turning on for brakes, 4wd, abs, vsc are turning on. I took it back to the dealership and they said the front brakes are completed gone and the rotors need to be cut. I complaint because it was only 8,000 more and they were used in the turnpike. They said the lights went on because the brake fluid went very low. I still had to pay to put on my brakes and cut the rotors. The following day, the lights of brakes, 4wd, abs, vsc turned on again. I am afraid of driving the Rav4 and it won't stop in time and there is an accident.
- the contact stated the he owns a 2006 Toyota Rav4. While driving his vehicle at 5 mph and he was tried to come to a stop when the vehicle accelerated. The contact stated that this happened 3 times before he took the vehicle to dealership. The dealership did run a computer diagnostic and found no errors. He stated that this has happened 4 times that day. The contact stated that the second time the vehicle would not come to a stop and ran into stairs which damaged the guard that protects the bumper. The contact called Toyota's regional office in chicago. The contact met an investigator at a dealership to run more diagnostic testing.
