Failure Date: 07/09/2024

The contact owns a 2016 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that the liftgate failed to properly close while pressing the electrical buttons on both the key fob or the two liftgate buttons located inside or outside the vehicle. The contact stated that the liftgate had to be closed manually to securely close the liftgate. The contact stated that after her daughter had loaded groceries inside vehicle, the liftgate failed to latch properly but was closed after several attempts. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact's daughter was informed that the hinges and liftgate needed to be replaced. The contact was provided an estimate for the repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided the contact a case number. The contact was then referred to the NHTSA hotline to report the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 108,000.

2 Hatchback/liftgate Lock problem of the 2018 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 05/15/2023

The contact owns a 2018 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that upon pressing the liftgate emergency release button, the liftgate opened half-way. Additionally, the contact stated that the liftgate had failed to latch or to lock securely while closed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the liftgate needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.

3 Hatchback/liftgate Lock problem of the 2021 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 07/05/2022

The contact owns a 2021 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that after parking the vehicle overnight, the following morning it was discovered that the rear hatchback door had erroneously opened. The contact stated that a severe thunderstorm had occurred over night however, the keys had not been used nor were any buttons depressed to cause the hatchback door to become unlocked. The cause of the failure was not determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 4,055.
