40 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2019 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 03/09/2020

Like many others who bought a new generation Rav4 hybrid (it seems to affect all trims as long as it's hybrid), I cannot get more than maybe 10 gallons in the tank. Advertised is 14. 5 gallons, and there is no such thing as a 4+ gallon reserve in a private vehicle, even commercial vehicles. Toyota responded with "call us" after 5 or 6 emails. I drained it of fuel driving from texas to California, let it run dry until it was electric only, then took it to the gas station (literally right around the corner from where I was), and it still clicked the pump off - to full (though it doesn't read full anymore, it sits just below "f") - at just over 10 gallons. I have squeezed every last drop I could once and it didn't even read 11 gallons from empty, though I don't normally ever do that so the evap canisters don't get burned out. The average mpg and estimated range on the screen adds up with the math for only having about 10 gallons in the tank, 36. 3 average with just over 10 gallons gives me about 300 miles, which is about what the odometer sees per fill from 1/4 full, when I usually fill up. It's been almost a year and Toyota has been of zero assistance even acknowledging this, though 2 dealerships in texas (where I bought it) told me it was a known issue, and 2 in hawaii (where I live now) repeated that info. Again, this is a hybrid xse - the premier model for sporting I wanted, the light sporting I do anyway, and it has other problems too. One is decades old with the Rav4 (window rattle), the other is with the a/c switching between modes. I can live with the other two, but not getting what was advertised in the fuel tank is worthy of complaint seeing as how many hundreds of others posted online about it this past year. Toyota needs to address this problem before it becomes yet another legal battle for them.

41 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2020 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 03/09/2020

The fuel tank does not fill to its advertised capacity of 14. 5 gallons. I get only about 10 gallons until it stops.

42 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2020 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 03/08/2020

Attempted to fill the fuel tank on 2020 Rav4 hybrid which reflected that is was below 1/4 full, but was only able to put in 7 gal which obviously did not reflect a full tank (14. 5gal).

43 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2019 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 03/08/2020

Stationary problem. Unable to fill car completely. Takes a maximum of around 9. 5 gallons of 14. 5 gal tank. Stated range should be between 580 and 550 miles. Never exceeded 429 distance to empty, typically 392 miles dte with 36 mpg avg. Toyota is unresponsive to issue. I lack confidence in fuel computer and system.

44 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2019 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 03/03/2020

I'm unable to put no more than 10 gallon of gas even tho max gas tank is 14. 5. A lot less mileage than Toyota claim.

45 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2019 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/26/2020

When fueling, the tank will not completely fill. If you attempt to continue to fill very slowly the tank over fills and you have problems with the vapor recovery system.

46 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2019 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/26/2020

Fuel tank will not fill correctly. If I over fill it affects the vapor recovery system of the ra 4 hybrid. Have to be extremely careful not to run out or gasoline.

47 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2020 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/25/2020

While fueling the vehicle can only put 10 gallons of fuel in the gas tank no matter how empty the vehicle is.

48 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2020 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/21/2020

Gas tank either does not hold the 14 gallons promised or does not allow all fuel to be used. Tank only accepts approx 9 gallons on fillup. Range displayed on dash is greatly diminished from published information.

49 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2020 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/20/2020

Fuel gauge is inaccurate as well as miles remaining calculations are inaccurate. Fuel gauge indicates empty when approximately 2+ gallons remain in the fuel tank.

50 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2020 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/20/2020

When doing my first fill up, my gas tank was only able to take 11. 19 gallons out of the 14. 5-gallon tank and that was after driving past when the refuel light had come on. The range of the tank was the primary reason for purchasing the Rav4 hybrid and upon doing my research I see this is a problem for many Rav4 owners. With a new 30 thousand dollar car having this much of a fluctuation in estimated and actual range means that there is a difference of over 100 mpg missing from the range. I do not trust the vehicle and how it reports its information and don't feel comfortable enough to take a family trip as I can't tell what the true range of my vehicle is. It is stated that Toyota is looking into the issue but that they sent the notice out to dealers and service departments, this should have been disclosed before purchasing the vehicle and this is not right as far as business practices go. Aside from that the fact that I don't get to fill a full tank thank I paid for because of the system or design is not ok. Please help to remedy this. I also videotaped my first tank fill up with VIN evidence that the vehicle is mine.

51 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2019 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/15/2020

I have a 2019 Toyota hybrid. The tank can not be completely filled. It can leave around four gallons unfilled. The only way I can fill it is to have the nozzle slightly out side of the filler neck and pump a a slow rate. While this works, it takes time and it is not very environmently friendly.

52 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2020 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/15/2020

Toyota advertises the 2020 Rav4 hybrids are equipped with 14. 5 gallon fuel tanks, the hybrid allegedly should get 41 miles per gallon for city driving, 38 mpg for highway driving and a combined 40 mpg. This should approximately provide a range of 580 miles on a tank of gas. However, my Rav4 hybrid cannot reach that range because when refueling, the gas pump nozzle automatically shuts off before the tank is close to being full. Adding 8 gallons of gas when the low fuel light is illuminated causes the fuel nozzle to shut off. Trying to add more fuel allegedly causes an overflow even though the tank should hold 14. 5 gallons total. When I checked with the dealer about the issue they do not have any fix for this issue and they have said Toyota already knows about the issue. I got pissed off because both the dealer and Toyota knows about the issue, but they hide this information from me while selling this car. I guess they cannot advertise fuel tank capacity as 14. 5 gal, what they are doing is unethical. I wish I get an option to return my car and get my money back.

53 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2020 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/15/2020

Gas tank does not fill all the way.

54 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2019 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/14/2020

2 issues with this brand new 2019 xse hybrid Rav4. 1) fuel tank never fills up as gas pump clicks off at 9. 5 (3/4 full) at gas station. This is now all over the news and blogs, and Toyota seems to have acknowledged the issue, but no solution yet . 2) after Toyota dealership performed brake recall service on Dec. 8, 2020 (at less than 2k miles), the front brakes whistles or squeaks loudly whenever I apply brakes at low speed (at or less than 5 mph). When I arrived at dealership to speak with service manager (scott), technician was assigned and rode with me and confirmed the low brake speed squeal/whistle. After 2-3 hours, a different technician who was assigned to look at it claims "no noise observed after test drive, operating as designed. " funny how they assigned 2 different technicians - one who observed the noise upon arrival, and the 2nd one who looked at it and claims no noise. When driving out of dealership service area, the low speed (<5mph) brake noise squeal was and is currently still there. Dealer continues to claim cold weather or moisture may be the cause (really - that sounds amazingly false!) and refuses to acknowledge or repair the brake noise issue. It's as if the dealership (stevens creek Toyota, san jose) is waiting for a recall vs. Acknowledging the issue so Toyota corporate will reimburse dealership for the repair cost for the brake noise issue. Car currently only has 4k miles.

55 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2020 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/10/2020

Car stopped at gas station with fuel gauge empty. Car advertised as having a 14. 5g fuel tank and a range of 550+ miles. When tank is empty it will only allow 10-10. 5 gallons of fuel before full. Has exhibited this behavior all 4 times being filled up. Toyota has not addressed this since the redesigned 2019 model year and continues to sell cars with no notification to customers leaving them to guess how much fuel is left or, at worse try to overfill to capacity.

56 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2020 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/09/2020

The 14. 5-gallon gas tank in my 2020 Toyota Rav4 hybrid has a defect that prevents the tank from being filled to capacity. This defect not only fails to comply with federal and state gas tank regulations, which prohibit the sale of vehicles that cannot fill 90 percent or within two gallons of their nominal gas tank capacity, but suffer from a substantially reduced driving range. The fuel tank defect prevents me from getting anywhere near the vehicles advertised 550-plus-mile range (I average 400-425 gallons a tank), which was a major selling point and for which I paid a premium price for; this happens at every interval I have to fill up on gas. I feel this is a safety hazard as well, I may run out of fuel which may result in an accident or leave me stranded on the side of a busy or deserted road and with a NY winter, it is just not safe to be stranded in the countryside when it is freezing cold outside. Running out of fuel may also damage my vehicles fuel system too! the owner's manual warns that if my vehicle runs out of fuel or the fuel is too low, the hybrid system may not be able to start.

57 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2020 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/08/2020

The gas tank will hold up to 10 gallons of gas and trying to add more causes the tank to overflow, even when the fuel light indicates the gas tank isn't full. Vehicle is advertised to hold 14. 5 gallons.

58 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2020 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/31/2020

Fuel-tank capacity is listed at 14. 5 gallons the tank won't accept more than 9 or 10 gallons.

59 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2019 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/29/2020

I bought my new 2019 Toyota Rav4 hybrid xse and took possession on January 3 2020. Since then, I have refuled multiple times and noticed it would not take more than 9-10 gallons of gas from empty. I found myself refueling more times than my previous vehicles. When researching prior to purchase, the vehicle says it has a fuel capacity of 14. 5 gallons and 580 miles per tank. I have never been able to get more than 9-10 gallons and it has always shown gas range in the 400 miles per tank. It has never given me anywhere close to 580 miles per tank. I took it today to the dealership after calling Toyota on January 30th and the dealership said that all cars have a 4 gallon reserve tank. This was their response to the problem although I am sure nobody would like to find out how many gallons a car has in reserve after the refuel light is on for obvious safety reasons. When I refuled all my previous cars, the capacity was at least what it said on the manual or more. It has never been a difference of over 38% from what the manual says to what this vehicle can actually take when refueling from empty with the refueling warning on and the refueling light on. It is dangerous to try and follow Toyota's official fuel capacity and range for this vehicle. If you follow the official range stated by Toyota in the manual and vehicle information, drivers can run out of gas thinking the car has actually 14. 5 gallons instead of 9-10 and a range of 580 miles instead of the actual 400 mile range.

60 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2020 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/29/2020

I purchased my car on 12-21-19 with the explicit sales claim that the 2020 Rav4 hybrid tank holds 14. 5 gallons. I was promised that I could drive over 550 miles on one tank of gas. However, I have had to refuel my car 3 times already. Each time when my car fuel tank empty light turned on, I could only get between 10-10. 8 gallons until it's full. I have been able to drive only 354-413 miles on a full tank of gas, a far cry from the 550 miles promised. I have contacted two dealerships and have opened up a case number with Toyota corporation. They deny ever having heard of this problem and do not have a fix. Doing a quick search online pulls up countless similar complaints about this car on car forums. I also learned that a couple of class action lawsuits have also been recently filed.

61 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2019 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/21/2020

Didnt fill up gas tank and brake pressure is low. Its take too much space to stop.

62 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2020 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/20/2020

My 2020 Toyota Rav4 hybrid does not get the range nor fuel tank capacity as advertised by Toyota. The fuel tank is specified as 14. 7 gallons, but maximum that I am able to put in is around 12 gallons after fuel tank is completely empty. Being able to pump even this much fuel into the tank is only possible after many pump restarts. This is a both a safety and environmental hazard as I have to circumvent the automatic pump stop.

63 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2020 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/08/2020

Unable to fill fuel tank to advertised capacity (14. 5 gallons). This is a recurring issue. When fuel is low indicated by fuel gauge and distance to empty calculation, nearing empty, I am only able to fill 9. 5-10. 5 gallons max.

64 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2019 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/07/2020

I purchased the new 2019 Rav4 hybrid on 11/29/2019 at prime motors in saco, maine. It currently has 725 miles on it. When I attempt to fill it it won't fill all the way. It's advertised to have a 14. 5 gallon tank but only holds about 10 gallons. The dealership advised me to keep pumping after the pump shuts off. This is very bad advice as it could overflow and cause a fire.

65 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2019 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/06/2020

The fuel tank capacity is about 9 gallons way too lower than the specification. This is causing too many trips to the gas station than expected. The purpose of buying a hybrid is defeated.

66 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2019 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/06/2020

The gas tank does not accept enough gasoline to fill the tank. Upon fueling, the dispenser clicks to stop when only 9-10 gallons are in the tank. The stated fuel tank capacity is 14. 5 gallons, thus the tank can only be filled to less than 70% capacity. The problem seems to be worse in cold weather conditions.

67 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2019 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/06/2020

Fuel tank capacity not as advertised (14. 5 gallons). Maximum input is 9-10 gallons after fuel light comes on. Vehicle is at 16,000 miles. Capacity problem has been consistent for life of the vehicle.

68 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2019 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/06/2020

Whenever I fill the car with gas, it doesn't get completely full. It leaves the tank about a quarter from full. Also, the car doesn't accelerate well. It hesitates.

69 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2019 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/06/2020

Our Rav4 hybrid will rarely fill more than 9-10 gallons in the tank. When the vehicle starts after a new tank has been filled the needle will not be all the way at full. One of the reasons I was sold on the vehicle was it's range, but this tank issue makes it impossible.

70 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2020 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/04/2020

When the low fuel light comes on (in the manual indicates there's about 2. 2 gallons left in the tank), I can pump about 9 gallons of fuel into the tank to the first click-off from the gas pump. So, for a 14. 5-gallon tank with a *2. 2-gallon reserve I should be able to put about 12 gallons in when I fuel up, not 9 gallons. The fuel gauge will not show full when fueling and the pump first cuts off, it's between 3/4 and full. The dte (distance to empty) will show about 410 miles at this point. It is not possible to fill the tank to it's stated capacity. This has been confirmed by a technician at the dealership where I purchased the vehicle. Toyota indicated to the technician that there is no fix. Toyota is continuing to sell the Rav4 hybrids with defective gas tanks.
