2009 Toyota rav 4. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle defect and cost document was written in spanish.
I parked my car in residential neighborhood and proceeded to cross street with my car parked behind me. Thankfully a man facing car yelled "your car!" my new car was rolling down the street backwards, gaining speed down the incline, headed for curb, sidewalk and huge tree. I chased the car down the street, got door open, jumped inside vehicle as it was moving and slammed on brake, injuring my back and shoulder in the process. The push-button start allowed car to "free-wheel" out of control when turned off, left in drive, and key left in car. I am in and out of car many times a day. No other car I have ever owned will allow me, without warning, to leave car if left in "drive". I was not informed by Toyota that push-button ignition would allow my car to become a potential weapon, free wheeling, if left in drive and unattended. I would like this situation to be remedied to save lives and property damage. Even after going through this frightening experience, I cannot be sure it won't happen again without an effective warning system.
2006 Toyota Rav4, consumer stated within 3 1/2 months after oil, total oil leakage accred, pistons and rings had to be replaced.
2007 Toyota rav 4. Consumer states problem with vehicle keys the consumer stated the plastic casing on the ignition key separated from the metal part of the primary key. She then started using the spare key and within a year, the same thing happened to that key. The dealer informed the consumer it would cost $200 to replace the key. The consumer stated it is a challenge to hold the parts together when starting the vehicle.
First incident I was sitting at a dead stop at a fast food restaurant with my foot on the brake and the car accelerated to a high speed, resulting in momentary of ?burning rubber?. Second incident happened about a week later when my husband was leaving an establishment and the car accelerated to high speed and he had to slam on the brakes.
I was driving home from work last January 19 at 5pm I saw my window that it looks like so hot outside and when I tried to open it,I saw a flame coming out from the left power switch. I was so scared because it looks like it was getting big so I stop my car ,turn off my engine, get out of the car and call 911. When police and fire department arrived, the fire or flames gone. It was so strange and scary. Good thing I never got hurt and I turned off the engine right away. I file this complaint because I just want you to be aware so that you guys can do any solution for this matter and I don't want anybody to experience what happen to me. Police report # 12-024482.
The vehicle, a 2008 Toyota rav 4, was sitting at a complete stop at a red light with operator's foot on the brake waiting for the light to change. Inexplicably and suddenly the engine revved to a high rpm and the vehicle lurched forward and struck the rear bumper of the vehicle in front. The collision was low speed and there were no injuries and no noticeable damage to either vehicle. We immediately drove the vehicle to the Toyota dealership for evaluation.
The transmission suddenly began slipping and jerking when accelerating from a stop or while in low gear and shifting from a low speed. I became aware of the ecm problem known to occur in my make and model of Toyota upon calling the dealership; however, I am being told that the warranty only covers ten years from the date of purchase (I purchased my car 11 years ago) despite the fact it is known that the ecm, the computer that controls the transmission, is defective and causes transmission problems. This is a dangerous problem as the car will not accelerate and the transmission slips. It is difficult to understand how Toyota cannot ethically cover this knowing it is defective and is probable to cause owners problems in the future, regardless if it's 8, 10, or 12 years down the line.
My vehicle was experiencing harsh shifting and hard engagement. I took it to the dealer today and was told the ecm needed to be replaced. I did some internet research and discovered Toyota received thousands of complaints regarding this issue as far back as 2006 in the 2001-2003 models. They extended the warranty to 10 years and 150, 000 miles. However, my vehicle is 6 months beyond the date (only 103,000 miles). I contacted Toyota and they will not pay for any repairs. In addition, I discovered that owners had issues with the replaced emc unit within 2 years-causing transmission failure or repeated ecm failure. I questioned Toyota as to why this was not a recall issue. They couldn't tell me. If it had been a recall issue, Toyota would be responsible for the repair and not me. In addition, how do I know that once I have my car repaired today, that I won't have the same issue or worse in 2 years--like many other customers? Toyota should be required to make this a recall issue--especially since there are thousands of people with this issue.
My recently purchased Rav4 2011 rolled backwards while in drive and my passenger door mirror caught the edge of my garage and shattered. I had no idea that this car rolled backwards while in drive. I was not told by the salesman, the manual also does not state it. The replacment of my mirror will cost me $360. 00 but more importantly it could have rolled back into my wife and she is not replaceable. This car is not safe. It is not expected to happen with an automatic transmission and if no one is mentioning it to you, how are you suppose to know? someone is going to get hurt eventually. It was almost my wife. It will soon be someone else.
With the vehicle in park and the brake pedal depressed, the engine reved immediately to around 6000 rpm when started. I turned off the engine without shifting out of park, got out of the car, and visually checked the floormat. It was not touching the throttle pedal and the throttle pedal did not appear to be depressed. After approximately 1 minute I started the engine a second time and the same thing occurred. I then waited approximately 5 minutes, pumped the throttle pedal several times, then started the vehicle a third time. This time the vehicle started normally (engine idling). I then drove home without further reving issues and have not had any reoccurence since the incident date. I took the vehicle to a local Toyota dealership for service the next day and was told that it was a floormat issue, and my driverside floormat was removed by the dealership. I disagree with this assessment. It is important to note that before I had the reving issue upon starting the vehicle, my last interaction with the vehicle was to have my foot completely off the gas pedal as I was steering the car into a parking space, when I was using only the brake pedal to moderate my speed, with no throttle pedal pressure being applied by me, and with the engine idling, as is normal. Do not see how this could be a residual stuck throttle pedal issue when I returned to my automoble and started the engine to drive away. The only other factor which may (or may not) be relevent was that when I turned the engine off after parking, I did not first turn the radio off, which I usually do. I believe I was tuned to a satellite station at that time (xm).
While driving about 30 mph, the car suddenly increased speed on its own, I applied brakes, the braking did not slow the car, the car continued to increase in speed, I then shifted the gear into neutral, the engine noise roared loudly, and I pressed the brake hard, the car stopped, while the engine continued to roar loudly for another 30 seconds.
The car accelerated by itself for about 20 seconds, I put the car in park. It sounded/roared like gas pedal was pushed to the floor. Sudden acceleration incidents have happened 6 different times: 11/03/2011 with 1000 miles, 11/05/2011 with 1110 miles, 01/04/2012 with 2650 miles, 02/26/2011 with 4606 miles, 03/06/2012 with 4692 miles, and 03/19. 2012 with 4932 miles.
Transmission slippage/failure did not allow me to accelerate to highway speeds on an on-ramp.
While I was driving to work around the month of October, my car would be going around 40-50 mph and it will suddenly stall or power down and the car just shuts off in the middle of everything. Its a good thing I go to work early around 4-5 am and traffic are low or I would be in major accident and at fault too? this continue to happen. Sometime happens when I flash on high beam and even when the car is in low speed around 15-25mph or turning around a corner. There is never a check engine light. When my car goes into stall, all power dies and my radio/cd/mp3 player stop playing my dashboard becomes all pitch black and headlight all die as well. I don't know how to explain this its fustrating and scary, I'm the original owner and I bought it brand new from my local Toyota dealership. I live in wisconsin and the snow is coming and Toyota require me to leave the car with them for over a week or so, not a problem cause I dont want to drive it until its fix. Its now after thanksgiving and the problem still occuring I took the car to the dealership today but they wont even look at it until I leave it with them for a week. I cant leave it there because I need a car for work so I had to arrange car rentals first with my own expense and will be dropping the car off Saturday. The answers they already gave me was no clue and dont know whats wrong with it with no check engine code. I dont want to be another koua fong lee. I just want to post this up now see if anyone found a solution and for my reference if they cant fix it. I want someone to have my back. The car is a Rav4 2008 with only 50,000 miles.
Vehicle has exhaust smell in the cabin when being driven. The car was taken to the dealership and the complaint was dismissed. Technicians say they test drove and didn't smell anything. The smell persists.
Master window power switch caught a fire in August 2011. It had been giving me problems since July 2009. Toyota would not fix it because to many miles. How does a power window stop working on a 2007 Rav4 when it only two years old. Faulty master power switch. It had a burn hole the size of a dime. I'm glad I took a picture of it. The first time I saw smoke was June 2011. I was so afraid to drive the fire trap I traded it in for a new car. The Rav4 was paid off now I have a car loan at 19. 9%,.
On 8-14-2011 my husband was driving our Rav4. We had just left a residential house and had been driving through the neighborhood at approximately 30 mph (maximum). As we approached the red stoplight at the neighborhood exit, he took his foot off the accelerator to gradually come to a stop. The vehicle was then moving at less than 5 miles per hour. When he pushed his foot more firmly on the brake to come to a complete stop, the engine starting racing wildly. He then put the vehicle in neutral and turned off the engine. When he restarted the car everything worked fine. A visual inspection verified that the floor mat was nowhere near the gas pedal and the gas pedal moved perfectly (not stuck). Considering the circumstances, I cannot believe that either the floor mat or a stuck gas pedal caused this acceleration. Fortunately (at least this time), the warnings from Toyota and discussions on the internet had mentally prepared us to safely respond in the event that this type of situation occurred, but if an uninformed driver had been driving the car, it is very likely that they would have slammed into the car in front of them.
2003 Toyota Rav4 - transmission slipping; ends up it is a computer (ecm) problem which is skipping 2nd gear and hesitating on acceleration and jurking into 3rd gear from 1st gear.
On August 3, 2011 everything was normal. I stopped for fuel. I then started the engine and shifted into drive with my foot on the brake. The engine began racing and making loud strange noises. The steering wheel was shaking in my hands. I immediately shifted back into park and turned the engine off. I restarted the engine and everything was normal. On August 4, 2011, I took the Rav4 to quality imports, a dealer in fort walton beach, florida. The dealer wanted me to see Toyota's side of the story. With considerable effort on his part, he uninstalled the very heavy semi rigid aftermarket rubber mat and reinstalled it to rest on the accelerator. He then said, "this is probably what happened. " this very heavy semi rigid floor mat is precisely contoured to snugly fit in the exact contours of the floor board. There is no room for this mat to move, because it fits so snugly within the confines of the molded contours. The rubber mat has never moved in over 6,000 miles of driving. I have a clear soft vinyl mat on top of the heavy semi rigid mat; the vinyl mat that has never been any trouble. Also, the accelerator pedal hangs above the floor mat thus making it impossible for a mat to slide on top of the pedal. The dealer then instructed me leave and obtain instructions by calling the Toyota customer experience center. I called 800 331 4331; I was given case number 1108040789. The Toyota representative asked me how fast I was going. I told him I was standing still with my foot on the brake; he responded, "I guess you don't know how fast you were going. " he instructed me to wait for a case worker to contact me.
Toyota 2002 Rav4, automatic transmission problem when switching into first / second gear, car will hiccup, and or not accelerate as expected. Aamco transmission specialists confirmed defective ecm module failure, and require a full transmission rebuilt. Toyota apparanty knows about this problem, and has issued service advisory, but no recall. Problem can resurface any anytime, very high potential for accidents as car will fail to accelerate or just stall when entering intersections and or freeways.
My husband was driving to the grocery store when he heard a grinding noise. Soon after, the check engine light went on. He immediately took our vehicle to the local Toyota dealer. We soon discovered our 2003 Toyota rav 4 has a defective ecm and the transmission has been severely damaged due to the ecm. It costs over $5,000 dollars to replace the ecm and the transmission. We are unable to drive the vehicle because we feel it is dangerous for ourselves and others.
Tires rotated. Wheel stud broke when being hand torqued to factory specs. No air hammer was used. Broken stud was replaced. All others will be replaced this week. I have half the broken stud and will keep those replaced.
Hi about my 2003 Toyota Rav4, its seems to stall and shutting off the engine while driving. For exaple it happen more then 5 time on me this month7/1/2011, and almost getting bump in rear end. I took it to Toyota dealer, and paying $100 for what they could find anything wrong. This model should be recall or accident will happen.
At around 60,000 miles, my 2007 Rav4 began making a very loud thumping, knocking noise from the steering column and shafts every time I turned the wheel left or right. The issue was noticeably worse at low speeds and the impact could be felt as a tremor through the steering wheel. By 70,000 miles, I feared for my safety driving at speeds higher than 35mph. The problem was addressed by two independent mechanics and the local Toyota dealership. All three advised that the issue should be repaired urgently as it is an immediate driver safety concern. Further research confirms that this is a recurring problem with 2006-2008 year Rav4s. Toyota recognizes that the intermediate steering shaft failures are serious enough to warrant the issue of two technical service bulletins. This flaw is covered by warranty for vehicles under 3 years of 36,000 miles, but costs over $1,000 to repair (at the owner¿s cost) out of warranty. This issue obviously relates to a design/material of construction deficiency with this model. Over 100 complaints already listed on NHTSA site. Any problems with the steering mechanism clearly affect the ability to safely drive the vehicle and thus need to be addressed immediately. Toyota is knowingly imposing risk on its drivers until this issue is dealt with, by a mandatory recall or extended warranty.
This complaint relates to the vehicle I lease, but I suspect it applies to all Toyota Rav4 models of this same design vintage, and may also apply to other Toyota models. . Read more...
While on an onramp, going into thick, fast traffic on the highway (95) our Rav4 had what I guess is called a "harsh shift" and stalled in newton, MA. We think this is due to a faulty ecm or transmission (we already had the ecm replaced once, in pasadena, CA at the end of 2008, and it was like pulling teeth to get Toyota to do it!) I can't believe the vehicle is experiencing the same problem, again!! someone could have been seriously injured! a quick search of the message boards (carcomplaints. Com has 3 pages of complaints regarding this issue!) and a lovely new york times article written on July 13, 2010 by christopher jensen about Toyota extending the warranty on the obviously faulty ecm's tells me this is a problem that needs to be addressed, sooner rather than later.
Yesterday, June 16, 2011, as I was driving my Toyota 2008 Rav4 (35,500 miles), the car accelerated uncontrollably. The car was still cold -- it was less than 2 miles after start-up. Outdoor temp was about 65. No rain or inclement weather. I approached a red light very slowly, at less than 10 mph. As I was braking, I became aware that the car was not stopping. I braked harder and could feel the breaks engaging, but underneath that feeling was the feeling of the car continuing to accelerate and fight the brakes. I got the car stopped, but only after extremely hard braking. If there had been someone in the cross walk in front of me, I'd have hit them. The car was still trying to take off. I put the transmission in park and took my foot off the brake. By now the engine was screaming. I sat there for a couple of seconds, foot neither on the brake nor the accelerator and the car sounding as if it would soon explode, and finally just turned the car off and called a tow truck and took it to the dealership. The service writer was cold and distant, non-verbally making sure I understood that he thought I was either lying or blowing the incident out of proportion, while at the same time saying nothing that could actually be quoted as rude. A special technician is supposed to come out from Toyota to look at the vehicle. Based upon what others have experienced, I expect the dealership to do nothing. The car is clearly unsafe, and knowing that, I cannot ever drive it again.
The driver's side sun visor on our 2004 Toyota Rav4 will not stay up. It is a safety hazard because it partially obstructs your vision when it drops down while you are driving. The visor is clipped in at the time, but it rotates into a down position on its own. This has been happening for quite awhile, and I have tried several solutions to keeping the visor secured in an upright position. The Toyota dealer does not consider it a defect and their answer is to buy a new one. However, several people have posted online that the new one fails after awhile, too. This is apparently a known problem with Toyotas, because 2001-2003 Toyota highlandaers and tundras have also had this problem. It is all over the internet on online discussion boards. I have never had this problem with any other car in 30+ years of driving.
The transmission will not accelerate and then something suddently "kicks in" and the truck will go- nearly been rear-ended numerous times- this is a big safety issue- told it's going to be a $4,000 transmission replacement- only 102k miles, like new. Also, at traffic lights, won't accelerate and people get ticked and need to pass and can't- numerous online complaints- add this. Unacceptable for Toyota.
2008 Toyota rav 4. Consumer sends correspondence in regards to vehicle recall the consumer no longer owns the vehicle.
My Toyota 2002 rav 4 suddenly would not accelerate when more gas is given thereby being more dangerous on highway for possibly being hit by traffic behind. Such a sudden change in shifting possibly transmission mal-functioning happens also while driving at a higher speed.
I experienced sputtering and hesitation while driving my 2002 Toyota Rav4 a few weeks ago, the Friday before memorial day. The car has around 72,800 miles on it. Over the memorial day weekend the car was fine. The next week I experienced the same problem. Once I stopped the car at a light and then accelerated, the car would lurch and sputter. I feared the car would shut off in traffic or I would not be able to keep up with the flow of traffic. I stopped driving it. Two different mechanics (non-Toyota) have told me I need a new transmission. I then took it to a Toyota dealer after calling the national customer service number, mentioned in a new york times article from August 2009. There was a recall on the ecm which the dealer who I bought the car from was uncooperative in replacing. So far the car is still at a different Toyota dealership undergoing "diagnosis".
The ecm failed and caused damaged to the transmission (2nd gear specially). On the highway, the vehicle had decreased power; gears were slipping and the car were jerk from gear to gear. Toyota apparently was aware of the malfunction because they extended their warranty to 10 years/150k miles. Because of my mileage, I am not covered. If they knew there was a fault, why didn't they do recall and fix the problem?.
On may 10, 2011 I experienced sudden unintended acceleration and then intermittently until on August 31, 2011 I experienced 3 even more dramatic unintended accelerations within about 40 minutes. I took the car to my nearby mechanic who told me this was something that requires the attention of Toyota dealer. The local dealer called in a Toyota regional specialist in unintended acceleration who concluded after tests that everything appears to be normal. He did indicate that braking can actually cause revving which sounds like unintended acceleration & perhaps that is what I experienced. He also said that Toyota is considering building future models with greater distance between the accelerator and brake pedals & they may also elevate the brake pedal so there is more separation between these 2 pedals and thus less likelihood of one's foot drifting between them. In conclusion, there remains in my mind an uncertainty as to what has been the cause of the unintended and scary acceleration I experienced. It may have been caused by accelerator pedal or ironically by the use of the brake pedal. If the latter, perhaps Toyota needs to make an appropriate modification so that neither pedal can cause unintended acceleration.
2004 Toyota Rav4 drivers side visor will not stay up. This started about 2 months ago for no reason. Dealer states it is not a defect so nothing short of replacing it can be done. I have to push the visor up against the windshield to get it out of my sightline. I have read the same complaint for this yrs. Rav4.
Check engine light, vsc and slip indicator light came on at 71000 miles. Cruise control stopped working, car began to sputter every few minutes, feeling like it was going to stall. Dealer said it was ok to drive unless lights were blinking, which they were not. Took it to advanced autocare who told me 4 pistons were registering as misfiring. Took it to the dealer who checked it out, stating that the only thing wrong was a coil which needed to be replaced. Barely avoided an accident while car stopped accelerating! Toyota is saying it's not under warranty and is normal for this to happen. This is the latest of issues with this car! door seals not working properly and had to replace the back door seal after standing water was found in the back after it rained.
The brakes failed to work twice and the vehicle lurched forward instead into drive. This was at low speed when attempting to come to a complete stop at a red light. When the first braking attempt failed, the brake was pumped a second time and it failed to stop and accelerated instead. Firm pressure was applied to the brake pedal a third time and this did promt the vehicle to stop but it was close to rear-ending another car already stopped at the light.
I leased a 2010 Toyota Rav4 in March 2010. The crossover has been okay. One problem being when I am on an incline, say at a stop light and take my foot off the brake and apply the gas the Rav4 rolls back like its a standard. I have asked several times when I have brought the Rav4 in for service. The service dept tells me the feather both the gas and brake until I am over the incline. I spoke to several Rav4 owners from 2006 thru 2011 and it seems to me its only the 2. 5 litre 4cly that has the roll back. Thank god I have not rolled into anyone, but feathering the gas all the time is to much.
Sunroof of 2009 rav 4 sport exploded yesterday while on the interstate. No other vehicles around and nowhere near an overpass. Glass shattered on myelf and passenger in the car. The whole is the size of a basketball and the remaining glass is blown outward.
Toyota Rav4 makes popping and clunking noise when steering wheel is turned. This is due to looseness in the intermediate shaft splines and joints (total cost:$468; part numbers 45221-42071 [steering intermediate shaft] and 45260-42090 [steering shaft assembly]). This is a potential safety hazard and Toyota refuses to issue a recall. It is a product defect in steering intermediate shaft as evident by the TSB issued by Toyota.
The check engine light turned on. The car began hesitating upon acceleration. I took the car to auto zone so they could give me a quick diagnosis. They said one of the codes that came up had to do with the catalytic converter and that would be causing the stalling. I took my vehicle to one of the dmv's g2 repair stations and had the catalytic replaced and was informed that I had to take my car to Toyota to have the ecm reflashed. The car worked fine for a few days and now the check engine light has turned back on and the car began to stall again. I was nearly in an accident due to the stalling. I have an appointment to have the ecm reflashed but the very rude service advisor at Toyota let me know that might not fix the problem. He let me know that my previous repair station sent me there to cover themselves when in fact they sent me there due to Toyota's service bulletin. I don't understand why I have to pay to have a faulty ecm reflashed. Toyota should provide that services for free. I have since found out that a faulty ecm can ruin the transmission so I may have some costly repairs in the future due to a faulty part by Toyota. Toyota should replace the ecms on all 2001-2003 Toyota Rav4s since they know they are faulty and cover the cost of the transmission repair caused by their faulty ecm. Toyota is being very underhanded by sending out the services bulletin to certain repair shops and not to actual Toyota owners. They should be held liable. Are they going to wait until someone dies? the unexpected stalling can cause a serious accident and Toyota owners should be informed. If I had known this I would not have purchased a Toyota for my teenager. The stalling almost caused an accident while I was driving but it would have definitely caused one for someone with less driving experience. It's a shame that Toyota will not do anything until someone gets hurt.
My Toyota Rav4, 2002, began shifting hard, clunking into gear, and accellerating prior to shifting on its own. I took the car to a Toyota dealer who has told me that this issue is not covered for all VIN numbers of Rav4's sold. We shall see if he is correct as I told him that the article from the NY times sure looks like it covers all Rav4's between 2001 and 2003.
2008 4 cly Rav4 sport with 24700 miles. Concern: 1/20/11 the maintenance light came on and after driving a few miles the cruise control light came on by itself and the car began to accelerate. I hit the cruise button, light went out, not sure if I also applied the brakes and the car drove normally. After the incident I drove the car about another 20 miles with no duplication of the problem. Concern: 1/21/11 start the car and the maintenance light was on. About 2 minutes into my snow covered trip I applied the brakes and abs system activated and worked as needed. I drove another 5 minutes and stopped at a red light. With my foot on the brake the cruise light came on the car started to accelerate. Keeping my foot on the brake I pushed the cruise button to try and deactivate it. It didn't seem to work so I then put the car in neutral and turned off the key. Restarted the car and only the maintenance light was on. The car seemed ok and I drove approximately another 25 miles and got the car to the dealer. Dealer cause/correction information. 1/21/11 check vehicles cruise control coming on by itself and vehicle accelerating. Tech road tested vehicle and monitored all systems. Tech not able to duplicate condition with the cruise control activating on it own. Tech found no bulletins or updates for the vehicle ** tech/dealer found no problem . ** they have given me a loaner and contacted Toyota of the problem. Someone from Toyota is coming 1/24-1/25/11 to check the vehicle.
2006 Toyota Rav4 'full throttle stick', without recall - (second ocurrance). Toyota will not repair/replace throttle unless they can replicate condition, due to the fact that this vehicle is not on recall list.
Accelerated problem: I was on my way home from having maintance work completed on car. My first thought was that Toyota had done some thing that created this problem. I was coasting and braking coming up to stop light, which was red, I was going about 1-2 miles per hour, when rpm's went very high. Could not stop car with one foot on brake, needed to use both feet on brake peddle to get control of car, almost hit car in front of me. I was able to stop car apprx 1-2 feet from car in front of me. Brakes or tires were making very loud noise. My wife said that tact was straight up, which is in the area of 7-8 thousand rpm's. Motor was very loud. Once I had control of car I put the car in neutral and car was still roaring, I turned the motor of. When light turned green and cars in front of me pulled away, I again started my car up and appeared to running normal. The only thing that I saw was different was a symbol came on dash board, in bottom right side. It was in yellow with a car and wavy tire tracks which I was told was the abs system. This light stayed on for several minutes and went out. On 01/17/2011, I took the car back to Toyota of lake city and they said that everything checked out and could not find any problem with car and could not get to duplicate again. I was told that I could take car home, but found out later that according to Toyota rules, I should not have been able to drive car home. Tech was trying to get a hold of Toyota head qtrs, but I found out later, Toyota head qtrs was closed. Not happy with this and asked for further tests. I brought the car back again on 01/26/2011 and was told that field technician ran further tests on car, Toyota had the car for 2 days. I was told that everything checked out and nothing further could be done. They needed the car to accelerate again, while Toyota had the car to determine what went wrong.
Clunking noise when turning steering wheel left or right while driving, Toyota dealer check TSB and found t-sb-0318-08. Advise to replace intermediate steering shaft which cost me total of $834. 86 including four wheel alignment. I have researched the problem with 2007 Toyota Rav4 in the internet and it seems like all the problem for this car is all the same. A recall should be implemented to correct the problem, do you have to wait until something really bad happend.
While I was parking my car and stepping on the break pedal, the vehicle almost stopped then suddenly without my control sped up forward and crashed to two parked cars in front of my car at speed of 15 mph. When I tried to control the vehicle by lifting the emergency parking handle, the car reverse its direction backward and hit a building and stopped . The car's engine did not become idle while I was stepping on the break pedal and the car became without my control after slowed down to less than 5 5 mph and my feet were on the break pedal all the time . Subsequently, I reported the accident to the west lapd and my insurance company. I was not under the influence of alcohol or any drugs . I have reported the accident to the manufacture of the car which sent an inspector to retrieve any information. Subsequently, the inspector stated that my car has special acceleration pedal which operated by electronic throttle which could cause surging forward going from closed throttle to open throttle. In the meantime still waiting for the manufacture response to my claim. I am mature experienced responsible drive for years. Please investigate my claim.
I was climbing a steep hill when my Toyota Rav4 just seemed to jump out of gear. I had to undertake special measures to turn around without engine power and coast down the hill. It was towed to a Toyota dealer who told me the ecu had damaged the transmission. They advised me it was out of warranty and would cost $4500 to repair. I had it towed back home. I since found that many are experiencing this problem with the Toyota Rav4. Someone needs to make Toyota accountable for this obvious defect. So much for being a loyal Toyota customer. Help! please. Its parked in my driveway.

This sun visor drivers side will not stay up in the closed position, there is no adjustment which can be made to fix it. According to Toyota dealer in newark DE a new visor is needed. I understand from the dealer this is a very frequent and common problem, with many model years. '.
Car started rumbling and mis-firing while driving down the road with approximately 50,000 miles in August 2010. Repair consisted of replacing the #5 ignition coil for $225. Happened again 06/13/11 and #6 ignition coil needed to be replaced for the cost of $308. Part number fp#90919-a2007.
The 2010 Rav4 rolls backwards while in drive. I first noticed this while stopped a red light in traffic. I took my foot off the brake and the car proceeded to roll backwards and did not stop until I applied brake pressure. I've also experienced this while stopped to remove my mail from my mail box and the car rolled backwards into the roadway while in drive. It happened again when I was in my driveway the car while in drive rolls backwards, freely, with no sign of stopping until I apply brake pressure. This is extremely dangerous and unexpected when it happens. My Toyota dealership claims this is normal for this car. Frankly, I don't feel safe in the car. Thankfully, no one has been injured when this happens. I'm not sure if the failed component is the drive train, the transmission or the hydraulics. This really needs to be looked into by someone before anyone is killed or injured.
2004 Toyota Rav4 l - driving about 25 mph, no dash warning lights on, smoke started coming into cabin, within less than a minute fire shooting out from under hood. Totally engulfed in flames in less than 3 minutes. Regular service done at Toyota dealer.
To whom concern hi, my name is don martinez. I have a disconcerting and disappointing story to tell about buying a new Toyota. My friend purchased a 2010 Toyota Rav4 5-door 4x2 SUV ltd on 3/20/2010 and on 3/27/2010 the vehicle failed. The car hesitated to advance and after 2 or 3 more tries did not responded at all. So my friend called the dealer to have the dealer pick up the car. She was interested in knowing what was wrong with her new car. The car was picked up the same day 3/27/2010. On March 29, she called the dealer to find out about her new car’s problem, and the salesman (harry zhu) told her they do not know what the problem was, but harry said, “the car needs a new engine. She loves the Rav4 and was convinced to ask for another Rav4, same model, same price; just another Rav4…… sounds fair, sounds easy, for her. Now, my friend has no choice but to ask for no less than her money back. Her experienced has opened my eyes to the way that the Toyota dealership takes advantage of their customers. More people will know about this story and I know that is only one of many stories you hear, but I hope you will learn a lesson from this story. Customer service can either help or hinder your business and in this case bad customer service turned away a loyal Toyota customer who wanted nothing less but to drive her brand new Rav4. My 2002 Toyota Rav4 had tc002-06 performed on it in January 2007. The recall was to address issues with the ecm and transmission shifting issues. My vehicle is out of warranty and has 85,000. I contacted Toyota and they informed me that a logic update was performed to resolve this issue. From what I have read online, the ecm should have been replaced and not updated. I also found that the ecm carries an 80,000 mile warranty. The problem I am having is now the transmission has failed and I was informed that the problem was due to the ecm not being replaced. All major service work on this vehicle has been performed at a Toyota dealership. The independent service agent has informed me that the transmission needs to be rebuilt and the ecm replaced at a total cost of over $4200. I contacted a Toyota dealership and a rough estiamte for this repair is $5000-$6000. When I contacted Toyota and asked about this TSB, they informed me that it is simply a manual addendum and nothing else. They refuse to help with this issue at all. It is serious because the vehicle begin to fail and would not accerlerate when I was trying to drive onto a major road from being stopped at a red light. I have researched this issue on the internet and I have found that many people have had this same issue around the same mileage with this model year vehicle. Please help!.
Harsh shifting from 1st - 3rd gear in automatic transmission.
My 2002 Toyota Rav4 automatic is having serious transmission problems. It intermittently does not find the second gear, and when it does, lurches forward if the accelerator is applied. This is very dangerous, because prior to it slipping out of gear, it starts out slow, and you must apply the accelerator more than usual to get moving. It has also lost the gear while at high speeds, a potential nightmare for someone that doesn't know how to react properly. After researching my issue, (and having the transmission flushed and filters replaced) I feel like I have no recourse. Toyota initiated a recall to re-flash the control module in 2007, which I had done. They never informed me that there was an actual error in the performance of the module, just something about it eliminate a problem of the check engine light coming on around 60k. My module tests out fine today, yet it apparently ruined my transmission, and now I have learned some individuals have replaced the control module, and some the entire transmission, only to be revisited by the same problems. My car currently has 111,000 miles on it, and the repairs will cost more than the value of the auto. How can I sell this vehicle with a clear conscience knowing all of this? please consider this for recall, Toyota withheld information from its customers when initiating this recall in 2007 (the flash reset), and caused many of us danger and great expense as a result. Thank you very much, brenda king.
I drive a 2002 Toyota Rav4 with 63k I bought it used 4 years ago with warranty I now have problems shifting from 1 to 2 gear took it to Toyota dealer to have a diagnose, I had previosly took my car to a transmission specialist I was told to take to the dealer were it was purchased because the ecm had to be replaced/reset anyway I did a research and found that there was a extended warranty on the ecm for 96 months or 80k which ever comes first my extended warranty expired because warranty starts from original owner(date first use) to replace the ecm is going to cost me $1300 I think I shouldn't have to pay this amount due to Toyota Rav4 ecm problem back in 2006 I should still be eligible for ecm warranty since I purchased my car in Feb. 2006. I hope the next step is not replacing the transmission. I am not satisfied with Toyota cars or there services .
Rav 4 year 2006 has had a number of jumping to 500 rpm while at idle or slowing down. The car has been to dealer four times without and they could not fix the problem.
2010 Toyota Rav4 gas pedal recall the consumer wanted to know if the cts pedals are the only pedals involved in the recall, or are there others such as the denso pedals? updated 03/05/10.
2010 Toyota Rav4. Consumer requests mediation. Consumer has not had a favorable response from Toyota. The consumer stated he purchased the vehicle hours before a recall was announced to the public. The consumer stated he purchased the vehicle without being informed of material information that was solely in Toyota's possession which they failed to disclose. The consumer was informed his vehicle was not included in the recall. The consumer learned that there were problems with the make and model of his vehicle. Updated 06/01/10.
Have had two accidents with Toyota Rav4 2007 before recall. In both incidents thought I was pressing brake with no response.
Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) these events happened on 12/22/10 in san diego. The owner, my client, was driving a new 2009 Toyota rav 4. Here are the vehicle specifics: Toyota rav 4 5 door 4x2 SUV VIN: [xxx] yr/mdl: 2009/4430a here is his narrative: I was in the left most lane on miramar blvd. Headed east towards the 15 fwy. When all of a sudden my car jumped forward and across the center into the next lane and into the rear of a semi-truck that was just taking off from a stop at the light that had just turned green. I remember driving and I remember the car lunging across the center lane and the sight of being right at the back of the semi-truck all of a sudden. They found me unconscious and I ended up at scripps hosp. For a week and my car was totaled. I was off work for 3 weeks and I have not replaced my car but I am carpooling currently. Acsc just finished an inspection on my rav 4 and the foot pedal and does not rule out that the foot pedal had a problem stating that Toyota needs to take the pedal off and dis-assemble it for a conclusive answer. Nothing has been done to correct the problem as the vehicle sits in a aaa lot in southern California. It has been deemed a salvage by the insurer.
I have a vibration when going between 62-70mph. Have no idea from what have taken it to the dealer, they balanced the tires, we had a private tire dealer check the balance, still there. The owner of our dealership called and said she test drove two other ones, same model as ours and they do it too. In fact she said one vibrates worse than ours. We are being told this is normal, but we know, that no vibration is normal.
Consumer wants the event data recorder removed or disabled on his 2009 Toyota Rav4. The consumer stated having a device installed on a vehicle he paid cash for is a potential threat to his civil rights.
Occasionally the car will try to accelerate, when the foot is on the brake off the accelerator. This has happened at least four times since purchasing this new vehicle in sept. Of 2009.
My 2001 Rav4 had been exhibiting a harsh shift when put in reverse, very poor acceleration from a stopped position, loss of power, unusual sounds and finally a p0758 trouble code. I have taken it to stonecrest Toyota 3 times and was told on 9/28/09 that the ecm needed to be replaced with no guarantee that the problem would be solved. Before taking the vehicle to the dealer, I've had a tune up,oil change,a new battery and a computerized engine diagnosis. The problems occur quite often and in heavy traffic poses an injury risk as they are unpredictable, cannot be controlled and other motorists are unaware that there is a problem vehicle beside,in back of or in front of them. Since the required repairs are so expensive, I have stopped driving this vehicle until I can have it fixed.
I have a Toyota Rav4 2008. Last year July to August within one month, my Rav4 (less than 2 year driving) had happened 2 times engine dead problem during driving, where my vehicle drove down to the hill without any power, specially no brake at all. It was happened one time I was driving, and another time my wife driving. We sent to dealer but I was told there was no error code was found, and was told they communicated with Toyota factory. No similar problem was found. We went through arbitration last year. But they said they cannot reduplicate the problem, so I cannot replace the car. But our family is really concerning to continuously drive this car since it is so dangerous, and we have no idea when it will die again during driving. It bothers us a lot, and no problem can be found by services. We just want to replace this car.
My Toyota Rav4 2002, has only 50,000 miles on it. Needs a new transmission. This has to be a defect !!! Toyota refuses to recall, even though it's a huge problem.
My 2001 Rav4 began having transmission slippage issues. I researched it online and found numerous issues regarding a defective ecm being the cause of the slippage. All the symptoms that were described in the forum matched mine exactly. I have spoken with my local Toyota dealer and the only thing he can do is discount the new ecm by 10%. I need to use my car so I reluctantly agreed to the repairs. Once the ecm is replaced I am hoping this will fix the issue. If not I will have to pay for a rebuilt or new transmission. Toyota knew of this issue in 2006 but decided not to inform their customers of the issue but instead only issue a technical bulletin on how to fix the issue. I will never buy another Toyota product again!.
My car started acting up in March 2008. I had my transmission rebuilt in April and got the car back still acting up! I am trying to go by the dealership who sold it to me and get their mechanic to look at it and he is too busy when it is messing up. It only does it sometimes now but it seems to get more frequent. The TSB I read mentioned the ecm and the transmission going bad so is that my next costly expense?.
Ecu or engine computer unit. This computer is bad. When shifting . The automatic transmission in the computer does not know what gear to shift in. This is scary when in traffic. It would start in lets say 2nd gear then bang back to 1st gear. What a jolt for you and the driver behind you.
Bought a brand new car. Whenever it rains, water comes down the center console and makes a puddle on the passenger side foot well.
When using the dryer in a car wash the hard spare tire cover was blown off the spare tire and bashed against the vehicle and then the ground severely scratching it and cracking it. Had it no completely come off at that point it is probable that it would have flown off into the from of any following vehicle had I been traveling down a busy road potentially causing an accident. These items should "never" come of under normal use conditions. This is a serious potential accident source as well as a potential source of a law suit against the owner operator of the vehicle. In addition it is hard and can cause windshield damage to any following vehicles and should never come off when properly attached.
We have a Toyota Rav4 electric vehicle. Car rolled away from charging station while plugged in - person in car shifted into 'neutral' by mistake. Ripped out charging paddle down to the electrical wires - potential electrical hazard. Could be avoided by a simple relay that will prevent people from shifting out of 'park' when car is plugged in. Happens to many Toyota electric vehicles - I don't know how many complaints have been filed. Picture (jpeg) available if needed please do pass on this complaint to Toyota.
Engine control module (ecm) first failed & was replaced 6/6/06. Ecm replaced 2nd time under open recall 10/25/07. Under enhanced warranty program, ecm & transmission replaced 3rd time after 3 month repair time 12/21/10. Vehicle traveled 300 miles when ecm & transmission failed again. Vehicle returned to dealership for 4th repair to ecm & transmission on 12/21/10. To date (2/22/11) vehicle is still at dealership awaiting parts to repair. Vehicle has been our of service approaching 5 months. We have no confidence Toyota can successfully repair vehicle. Safety issue arises when harsh shift condition occurs causing the vehicle to slow down as it shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear, creating possibility of rear-end collision.
Just get a network error notice when I try to get the tsbs for a 1999 Toyota Rav4. Tried 2x got same answer. Bob (ps was successful when I tried another vehicle.
Consumer was shocked as he exited the 2004 Toyota Rav4. The consumer is concerned that this could cause a fire if it occurs at a gas station.
Car smokes early in the morning, I took car in before warranty expired but was told by dealer that there was nothing wrong with the car. At the beginning car would only smoke early in the mornings and not all the time. Later as the car began to smoke more regularly the dealer refused to repair due to expiration of warranty. The car is now smoking drastically, I was told by the dealer that the smoking is a common situation (defect) with Rav4's of 2002. I was also informed that other cars had been brought it and had been fixed because they were under warranty.
I have a 2001 Toyota rav 4 that chugs and since the changing of the catalytic convertor is getting between 12 and 14 mpg. It is going in to the Toyota dealership on 010504 for the 4th time. In Nov. The check engine light came on and that is when they replaced the catalytic convertor and some sensors. Since the replacing of the items is when the gas mileage has decreased. The previous owner also had the chugging problem and was told they could not find anything.
A "baffle" is installed into the oil filler cap beginning with the 2002 Toyota's. While driving the "baffle" broke causing the timing chain and consequently the engine to fail. Ts.
2002 Toyota Rav4. The luggage cover has a rubber stop on each side to hold it up in order for the hooks that are install on the back of the seats to be used. In cold and hot weather, the rubber stops do not hold the cover up. In April 2002, the cover came down and hit me on the bridge of my nose so hard that I was almost knocked out. It was dark and freezing cold. I could have been killed, robber or attacked. If I had a child in my arms, I would have dropped it. Toyota deems that there is no problem with the shield. I am proof that there is and asked them to place a recall on it but they refuse.
Engine light came 0n. Consumer applied brakes, and vehicle went forward and jumped curb. Consumer's vehicle hit another vehicle, and light went off. Next day, dealer checked system's computer and a sensor kicked up the idler. Sensor will have to be replaced. Consumer was unaware of the cause, and if it was an intermittent problem.
On many occasions the vehicle wandered when the wind was blowing. The consumer stated that she nearly lost control of the vehicle due to the wind pushing the vehicle around. The dealer claimed that the vehicle was handling perfectly.
Front brakes squeal when coming to a stop on a constant basis, windshield rattles at low temps less than 60 degress, rear suspension creaks when accelerating after stop.
The squeezing / rattling type of noise at dash / instrument area. I took my car to maita Toyota service center for more then 6 times and they couldn't get it done right. I am aware of many of 01 Rav4s have this kind of problem.
Dissatisfactory service to vehicle by personnel. No safety defect mmentioned in summary.
