36 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2012

I was a stop light with the brakes firmly pressed down when the vehicle lurched forward. It felt as if someone had rear-ended me, however, there was no one behind me. Now the vsc lights are lit up on the dashboard display and it is lurching and power surging at random.

37 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2012

During my evening commute while driving on I-20 west at 75 mph, the steering wheel tugged and the front brake engaged. Immediately afterwards, the slippery wet lamp flashed and an alarm buzzer sounded for about 10 seconds. Afterwards, the vsc trac and traf off lights illuminated and remained on. I drove to an orientation and while on the way home at 45 mph, all of the previously stated alarms and malfunctions occurred again and the brakes engaged with a loud noise. I stop for gas at my usual 1/4 tank level and while pulling away from the fuel station, all alarms and all malfunctions recurred for the third time within a 24 hour period. The abs engaged while driving at 10 mph. I called the Toyota service department and coordinated to leave my vehicle in the night deposit box for maintenance the next morning. Toyota kept the vehicle for two days and replaced the skid control ecu anticipating that the problem would be resolved. Previously, I had the brake fluid flushed and replaced on 08/17/2012 as routine maintenance at 262,223 miles. The problem recurred within days.

38 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2012

It seems electronic control system thinks vehicle is out of control when it is not. Vsc activates in random conditions at random times at speeds between 30-65 mph. Vehicle experiences lose of power, pulling to one side and inadequate braking. Vehicle becomes unsafe to drive and is dangerous! a recall on the vsc system & components for this vehicle is in order.

39 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/31/2012

Driving on dry road and vsc engages. Can not use brakes. Continues to do this for a few minutes then stop, then engage again. Happened in oct. 2011 had a steering sensor replaced advised by Toyota and it is doing it again. This is very unsafe because I had no control of vehicle while this is engaged. I was going maybe 10 mph when it happened. No warning just engages.

40 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/17/2012

The vsc lights come on when driving, the rear differential seal was completely rusted through and should be on a recall, the frame was on recall and replaced in 2014, but the rear seals were rusted thru and Toyota after costing me thousands does not want to cover rear seals why ? right after the frame was replaced and the Toyota dealer in deerfield beach, FL said the rear differential is also way rusted out and may blow the seals, well they did during a oil change and check. If Toyota knew of the extreme rust on the frame that it was also on the rear differential as confirmed by 3 different mechanics one being Toyota. Toyota wants me to pay $2,000. 00 to fix which is outrageous.

41 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2012

Was driving on the interstate in the left hand lane. Tried to merge into the right hand lane and noticed a car in my blind spot so I went back into the left lane. However, my vsc/abs lights went on, the car beeped, made a heavy grinding noise, and then, with much force, veered hard to the right. I tried to steer it back to the left hand lane, the other drivers saw me wrestling with my steering wheel and the car started to fishtail so fortunately they stayed well behind me. The car became impossible to control and steer and braking did not help. Despite my best efforts to control the car, apply the brakes, steer out of the skidding and fishtailing, my car then went over into the right lane, over to the shoulder, and then the wheel sunk into the grass next to the shoulder where the vehicle rolled over several times. My son and I were airlifted to the trauma unit. I suffered 2 broken vertebrae in the c area of my neck and a compressed disc in the t region of my spine, concussion, cuts, bruises, glass embedded near my eye, as well as a splenic aneurysm. My son had a concussion, wound on the head that required stitches, cuts, bruises and a sprained ankle. My son and I were both unconscious at the accident scene. My two daughters had minor cuts, sprains, and bruises. We were fortunate to have come out of this alive and not to have hit anyone else. I am still in a neck brace and undergoing medical treatment. Toyota needs to recall this model as soon as possible. We could have all been killed. Unfortunately, my car was totaled and there was no black box in this model. I will never buy a car from Toyota again. However, for the safety of others, I do hope they recall this model as I would hate for others to suffer what we had to suffer, or worse.

42 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/11/2012

While driving during normal dry conditions, vsc alarm started to go off followed by loss of control of brakes. Was able to pull over without incident and at about 10 mph the alarm shutoff and the amber trac off light and vsc trac light annunciated and all driving conditions were normal again. I'm guessing at this point the system was disabled in the trac off mode. I'm in the process of bringing the car to the dealer for a diagnostic however I've read numerous items online of people having this problem and Toyota doesn't seem to help (recall). It is quite expensive also.

43 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2012

Was accelerating onto the freeway today and it felt as if the left brakes came on along with a screeching sound and it made me swerve left. I was able to avoid swerving into merging traffic but I nearly crashed. Over the last week the vsc off lights have started going on and off and after reviewing some literature on line it seems that hundreds of others have had the same type of problem. The 2003 Sequoia was actually recalled for this same thing. Very dangerous and now I will have to contact the dealer to see about it getting fixed before someone is killed. I have two young children and this really pisses me off. Even if there is not a recall I should have been made aware of the danger I was putting myself in. I have been happy with my truck for 8 years but after this incident and seeing what others have gone through I will never buy another Toyota!!!.

45 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2011

While on the highway, suddenly there was a loud grinding noise in the front end of the car, the car lost all power, and the vsc alarm went off and the vsc dashboasd lights were flashing. This lasted for about 30 seconds and then stopped. This has happened again and again at all different speeds and now the vsc lights are on all the time and the grinding happens intermittenly.

46 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2011

The vehicle is a Toyota Sequoia 2002 2 wheel drive, and I have had three incidents so far. The first time was driving in the high way at a steady speed of 65 mph when the car all of the sudden jerked to the left and a beeping went off and the track off and vsc track came on. The problem is that there is no warning at all and it just happen in a matter of seconds. My concern is that I use this vehicle just when my family is with me. I wonder if accidents with fatalities need to occur before somebody do something about it.

47 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2011

The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated that while driving 80 mph, the vsc traction light illuminated on the instrument panel and the wheel jerked to the left. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop for inspection where they stated that the yaw rate sensor needed to be replaced. The contact notified the manufacturer who stated that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign id number: 10v176000 (traction control system). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 115,000.

49 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2011

Vsc/trac lights are on, engine light is on. Toyota dealer tells me this is a common problem with 2002 Toyota Sequoia but there's no recall. The internet is filled with Toyota Sequoia owners, 2003 model, dealing with repeated fixes for the vsc/trac lights and engine lights that come on after 111,000 miles.

50 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2011

We have been experiencing an issue w/ the vehicle skid control light keeps going on and off. At one point, we lost power to car, while trying to accelerate. Toyota dealership is unsure what the issue is. This has been going on for over a year. I found a recall related to vsc for 2003 Sequoias but Toyota says our Sequoia is not included in this recall even though the symptoms are very identical!! instead the local dealership wants to try to replace some computer chip (that would cost us thousands of dollars) but they are not guaranteeing that this is even the cause or will resolve the issue!!! they are saying it can be this computer or it can be that computer . . And replacing each is worth a few 1000s but they don't know which is causing the vsc light to go on and off!!.

51 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2010

Problem began in 2009 when the vsc locked up on my husband while on the freeway. This incident was reported to you and a complaint filed. When vehicle was taken to Toyota of escondido, we were told it checked out fine. The light continued to come on an off. . Taken in again, they pulled the computer system and found it registered the car had a total rollover. . So not the case! Toyota had no answer, saying maybe computer malfunction. . They did nothing! over the year the light has come on and off randomly, when taken in for scheduled maintenance, we have been told it "checks out fine". On 12/22/2010 I was pulling out of a parking spot and noticed a feeling of total tightness over the vehicle. The vsc light was on. When put in drive (I had been in reverse) the car was fine and the feeling gone. . Light as well. One hour later, I was at a stoplight in heavy holiday traffic. As the line began to slowly mover forward, I lightly touched the gas. . Immediately the car was overcome with the tight feeling and lights came on and a deep grinding noise started. I had no control of the vehicle. I was pushing forward and could not steer. . I looked down thinking I was on the gas. . My foot was 100% on the brake. . All the way down and the car was pushing forward! I looked up and watched as my huge Sequoia crumpled up into my windshield. . Then the car shut down. The car in front of my had little (popping noise in trunk) to no damage! airbags never ejected. Towed and incoperable at the time. Currently being investigated for damage by insurance and Toyota.

52 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2010

I have owned a 2002 Toyota Sequoia since 2006. This problem began occurring in the winter of 2007 with the vsc, vsc trac, and abs warning lights all coming on. This kept continuing anytime I was driving in wet snowy conditions. I began to research this problem on line and it seems there are many cases of this on 2001-2003 Toyota Sequoias. I took it to a dealer and they couldn't find any computer codes relating to this issue. At the end of last winter the problem seemed to become worse. Even in dry conditions on dry pavement the vsc computer begins to take over acceleration and very often! and sometimes the lights come on and sometimes not. Again I researched and found there to be a Toyota recall on 2003 Sequoias only for the same problem that has been affecting my Sequoia! I called Toyota, they gave me a case # and told me to take it in to the dealer. I took it back to a Toyota dealer and again they could not duplicate the lights turning on or find any computer codes concerning the problem. That was approximately 5 months ago and still the problem persists leading up to yesterdays accident. I drove up to the mountains to go snowboarding. When we left the resort it was snowing very heavy. I noticed the abs, vsc, and vsc trac lights come on again, as I was expecting them to. We drove about 7 miles down the road then I was moving in to the left turning lane of a traffic light. Our speed was only 15-20 mph, and when I tried to slow down the wheels locked up and we began sliding. I let off the brakes and tried them again to no avail. I let off the brakes and tried to miss the vehicle in front of me by going to the left side of them over a small median as there was no traffic coming towards us in the intersection. But my rear tire bounced me off the median and into the vehicle. The damage was minor and there were no injuries. I believe this accident could have been avoided if the abs and vsc system was working properly. I believe the recall should include 01 and 02 Sequoias.

53 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/07/2010

I have a 2002 Toyota Sequoia and recently my vsc has been was feels like a lock up, I hear something grinding and the car begins to shake and swerve, it happened as I was entering the interstate. I have had issues with the vsc light going on and off and did mention to the service dept. At the dealership when it was under warranty, they said they could not find anything wrong. It has been a few years since the problem has occurred and now it is worse and a very scary and dangerous situation. I had my daughter and a her friend in the car and we were nowhere near a town. I am very scared to drive my car. It now happens almost everytime I go somewhere, and the dealership wants to charge me just to evaluate the problem when I had previously mentioned it before. I hope there is a recall very soon.

54 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2010

Vsc/abs/skid light comes on intermittently, at differing speeds, at random intervals, accompanied by grinding noise and braking action. During some of these random occurrences, especially when driving at highway speeds, the action can pull the car quickly and forcefully to the right and on a few occasions this has almost resulted in loss of control. I read on edmunds. . Read more...

55 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2010

This is a repeat occurrence of a problem with the vsc trac and trac off systems. Repeatedly, the lights will come on and remains on until the vehicle is restarted. Again, when I took it the Toyota service department, I was informed that they were unable to replicate the codes. No resolution.

56 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2010

I have been having the same problem with my 02' Sequoia. At first the vsc trac light/ vsc off would come on & go off after turning engine off. Then it started staying on along w/ abs light & brake. All the lights continue to stay on. My vehicle only has 126,800 miles which I consider less to be having an issue at this time. I'm a mother of three in which this is my primary vehicle that carries my precious cargo. I really do think that Toyota should issue some kind of recall in regards to this matter, it clearly looks likes this is a problem w/ other Sequoia owners & they need to stand behind there products. Especially when it involves the safety of lives. It would be great if someone could help me w/ this matter.

57 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2010

While driving through parking lot and applying brakes, the vsc trac and trac off lights came on and remained on while the vehicle was on. After restarting the vehicle, the lights would not replicate. When taken to the dealer, the technician informed me to bring it in when the lights were on because they were unable to pull the codes.

58 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2010

While driving my 2002 Toyota Sequoia, I pulled into traffic and all of a sudden the truck lost power as cars swerved around me and a violent grinding noise started. A skid control light started flashing. I could feel the grinding on the brake pedal. After a few seconds, the truck beeped and 2 more lights came on. The "trac off" and "vsc" came on. After that the truck drove normal. The next time it happened that day was while I pressed on the brake pedal as I was trying to make a right turn into a gas station. This has happened multiple times now! I no longer feel safe on the road as this seems to happen at any moment. I have read all about this problem on the internet. Many Sequoia owners have had these same problems. Why will Toyota not fix these problems??? what has to happen for them to feel responsible??.

59 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2010

Trac light/vsc lights came on while driving down the road. Then the car pulled to the right and a grinding noise sounding like the anti-locking brake mechanism is activating. This is an extremely dangerous malfunction. I've seen that the 2003 model has a recall out for the same thing, and after seeing many others having this same occurrence with the 2002 model, they should expand the date range to cover the 2002 as well! it happened twice this weekend and it's happened 4-5 times previous to this recent incident (one earlier incident had my stepdaughter driving the Sequoia and the power shut completely off while driving!). The mechanics told us they couldn't pull any related codes the first time we took it in. We need to take this in again immediately, but why should I have to pay the full price when this is obviously a defective part they've created? I was traveling at 70 mph on interstate-10 the first time it happened this past weekend and in-town at a slower speed (40 mph) the second incident. Luckily nobody was in the lane next to me or I'd have hit them for sure!.

60 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/06/2010

We've experienced a lack of acceleration on our 2002 Toyota Sequoia, dealer has not found the problem. On Saturday may 6th at approx. 11:30 pm, as we exited the freeway with wife and eight year old triplets, the vehicle basically died out. The engine was still on but vehicle would not move when pressing the accelerator. I let the vehicle roll and pulled over where it was safe. A recent announcement refers to a recall of Sequoias with this problem but only for the 2003 model. I've read various posts about owners of other models having the same issue so I believe this problems is more widespread than what Toyota is admitting at this point. What action can I take at this time as my wife no longer feels safe driving the vehicle at this time. The repairs will I imagine be very costly if I have to pay out of pocket.

61 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2010

Hello, I'm in the military and my wife and kids were driving in our 2002 Sequoia 4x4, she called me at work crying and said that her and the kids had almost hit a 18 wheeler head on. She said she was going around a turn and the truck jerked her into on coming traffic, she applied the brakes hard, and pulled the truck back into flow of traffic. She pulled off the road and I had it towed home. After further research, there are hundreds of complaints on the internet for this same exact issue. Almost verbatim of my same issue. After that the vsc, or vehicle skid control light flashes, and it causes my truck to brake one wheel at a time. It also will not allow us to accelerate. I took it to the dealer yesterday and they called me and told me the ecu was bad and that this was a known problem for this model and year of truck, which is visible on the internet. Little did I know that the part is $650 dollars, and the labor is close to $250. Could you please assist, I getting ready to deploy to iraq again. I need to know my family is well taken care of while I'm gone. Can you please provide me assistance with this issue? my question is, if there is so many issues with the same problem, why hasn't there been a recall. Reminds me of Toyota's gas pedal issues. This is just as bad when it comes down to it. Something needs to be done ASAP. Once again, please provide me assistance. 62 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2010

The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Sequoia. While driving at speeds of 5 mph and making a left turn, the front tires slipped and the vehicle decelerated for approximately four seconds. The dealer was able to duplicate the failure but was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired and there were no recalls. The failure mileage was 107,000 and the current mileage was 108,000.

63 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2010

2002 Toyota Sequoia abs and vehicle skid control (vsc) computer failure that causes safety concern in operating the vehicle (abs, vsc, parking brake lights stay on). In slippery road conditions, applying brakes or accelerating causes the vehicle to skid and slide easily. 2003 models have been recalled for similar issue with abs and vsc computer. Please look into poor Toyota's design or production quality of these vehicles before we get injured or worse. . .

64 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2010

While turning a corner at an intersection in d position, suddenly there was no power to the wheels while pressing gas pedal, abs, vsc and trac and cel lights came on. This could have resulted in an accident, had there been more traffic. After pulling to the shoulder with remaining speed of vehicle, turned into p, then back into d, vehicle jerked forward with crunching noise while pressing brakes firmly! shut off vehicle, restarted, then drove ok, but above mentioned lights stayed on for a an hour. Later that evening, the warning lights turned back off to normal. This is the second time that we had a similar incident involving loss of power in combination with vsc trac and cel warning lights immediately after.

65 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2010

I purchased a new 2002 Toyota Sequoia in April of 2002. In January of 2004, I was on the new jersey turnpike and when I went to stop my vehicle, my brake pedal went all the way to the floor and I was luckily able to get into the shoulder and finally get the vehicle stopped without hitting anyone. It appeared to me that the master cylinder might have malfunctioned. The truck was towed to a Toyota dealer and they could not find anything wrong with the vehicle. When I picked up the vehicle, it appeared as though the brake pedal was back into its normal position but the dealer could not explain why. During the week of February 12, 2010 this same problem occurred twice and I was almost involved in two separate accidents. I took the truck to the Toyota dealer and once again the computer and other indicator lights were not showing any problems. After several hours of sitting there the brakes returned to their normal position just like before. I then took the mechanic for a ride in a back lot of the dealership and was able to make them fail once again. After this occurrence, the brakes never returned to their normal positions. I left the truck at the dealership for them to investigate. The mechanic said that there were no known problems in this area and he said after talking to several Toyota engineers that it could be a number of things: 1) master cylinder 2) brake booster 3) brake actuator 4) computer the mechanic and the engineers felt that is was probably the brake actuator so I went ahead with the repair. But they were not 100% sure that this was the problem. But they did agree that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The brakes of course are working. I talked to several other mechanics and they have said that Toyota knows that these actuators are bad but are not doing anything about it. They also mentioned that the vsc/ecu computer modules are a defect as well.

66 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2010

The contact owns a used 2002 Toyota Sequoia SUV which was purchased in 2005. He stated that the vehicle would accelerate unintentionally while in the park position. The rpms would idle extremely high and the vehicle would attempt to accelerate. He had to depress the brake pedal hard enough to prevent the vehicle from moving forward. There were no recalls describing the failure. The contact was awaiting repairs. The failure and current mileages were 99,500.

67 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2010

I have a 2002 Toyota Sequoia limited that has an error message on safety equipment. Vehicle stability control (vsc) and abs (anti-lock-brake) system lights are constantly on, causing me concern. I see Toyota initiated a recall on the 2003 model for this concern, yet not on my model year? I see numerous blogs with this concern as I search for solutions. This was a very expensive vehicle that I purchased due to the reputation of this company for building safe automobiles, I am disappointed in Toyota's lack of response. Please help if you have the ability/authority. Thank you.

68 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2009

Driving vehicle on interstate when it suddenly braked and pulled to the right, creating a dangerous situation just avoiding the car next to me. Vsc and trac lights came on. Dealer replaced numerous parts and vehicle has been ok for a few years, then lights are on again and more parts replaced. . . Now lights on again and dealer diagnosed it as brake master cylinder,,,$825. 00,,, after spending thousands already on this problem. . I had a independent repair shop replace master cylinder and lights still on with 3 new codes. . Love the vehicle but so sick of this issue. . . And worry about it suddenly braking and pulling. . . 02 needs a recall. .

69 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2009

Today on my way home, the vsc off and vsc trac lights came on. Whenever I apply my brakes, the car shakes a lot. I thought it was the rotors but I now think it was this system turning on when it wasn't suppose to. On the way home today, my Sequoia did not shake at all. There are a ridiculous amount of threads on tundrasolutions and edmunds about these lights coming on with 00-03 Toyota Sequoias. Most everyone has had to have a computer replaced because of this. Quotes for this are between $1,500 and $2,500. I don't have that type of money and I don't feel I should be responsible for this problem because it is a safety issue and so many others have had this same problem. There should be a recall. I just bought this vehicle a few months ago because we expecting our second child and needed a larger vehicle. I chose a Toyota because of reliability but I'm afraid that could be a problem if so many people are having issues with this vehicle.

70 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2009

The traction control, vsc light is illuminated intermittently over the past few years. I am scared that if I need to avoid a impeding accident that because the vsc system not working that I may not be able to successfully avoid a potentially fatal accident. I am also scared that the vehicle may rollover when doing a fast turn to avoid an accident. Based on my research, I have found that this is a common problem among these vehicles and that there was a 2003 recall for this problem. There are a lot of problems with the 2002 vehicles and it needs to get fixed. Must we first have an accident to win rights to be accommodated. Does Toyota not want to make good on it's product and satisfy all owners/customers. I worry every time I drive my vehicle and thank god each time I reach my destination without incident.
