Hello, I am writing to you to have an investigation started on 2003 Toyota Sequoia, I own one and there has been concerns with the frame of the vehicle rotting out, there was warranty enhancement program sent out in united states to cover frames of 2001 to 2004 Toyota Sequoias which replaced severely rusted out frames at the dealership. I use this vehicle for my family and I do not want to endanger the lives of them and the people around the community where the frame may break due to rust and cause a severe accident. Please take a look at the details below and get back to me. Subject: limited service campaign (lsc) csd certain 2001 through 2004 model year Sequoia vehicles frame inspection I am located in canada would like nhsta to investigate and see if this program can be administered to vehicles in canada since I have severe rotting of the frame and I have had to have it welded many times to not compromise the safety of the vehicle.

7 Body problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2019

Took vehicle to local Toyota dealership due to steering issue - when I would hit a bump I would loose control of the steering. Inspection showed the vehicle under body and frame has completely rusted, there are sever holes and the trailing arm has separated from the frame. I am not the original owner, but Toyota had a recall on the frame during the prior ownership and the vehicle was serviced multiple times at a Toyota dealership during the recall and the problem was not addressed. Toyota refuses to offer any assistance at this time.

9 Body problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2019

The trunk latch/handle/lock. I have had it replaced 3 times by a Toyota dealership. There's is clearly a manufacture defect and there's needs to be a recall. The last time the Toyota dealership I. Austin texas replaces it I had a 12 month warranty. In exactly 14 months the same thing occurred again! this is ridiculous to say the least and I am tired of paying 600 (parts/labor) to repair, when Toyota is aware of the problem! note: when the handle breaks there is no access to the spare tire because you have to life the trunk to access the spare time. I have had my vehicle towed twice scorn tire issues because the spare could not be accessed. The last occurrence I was stranded on side of the road at 2am.

10 Body problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2003 Toyota Sequoia. The contact took the vehicle to davenport Toyota (located at 1501 e 53rd st, davenport, IA 52807, (563) 391-4106) for a noise that was coming from the chassis while driving. The dealer diagnosed that the frame was badly corroded through. The vehicle was not repaired. Three hours after leaving the dealer, while driving 55 mph, the frame fractured and the rear of the vehicle shook violently left and right. The contact was able to coast the vehicle to the side of the road. The contact drove the vehicle slowly to his residence. Once the contact arrived home and looked underneath the vehicle, he noticed that the rear passenger side was completely corroded through. The contact stated that there was no coating on the frame, which caused the metal to corrode badly. The vehicle was taken back to davenport Toyota where it was inspected and the contact was informed that the frame was corroded through and there was no resolution for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided a case number. The approximate failure mileage was 186,000.

11 Body problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2019

Takata recall never informed my family about the recalls for the frame on Toyota sequioas. Therefore for more investigation during repairs to my vehicle not long ago I saw holes in my frame and was very bad and had my worried about my vehicle. I was unable to take photos at the time but am willing to put my vehicle on a lift and take as many pictures as necessary.

12 Body problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2018

My 2003 Toyota Sequoia has rust holes through my frame to the point where it is unsafe to drive. I have to drive it as it's my only vehicle and I have 2 small children that I have to take with me. Toyota USA said they performed a treatment to the gram in 2012 and that their is nothing further they will do to resolve this blatant safety issue. The fact so many Sequoia owners are reporting this and nothing is being done by Toyota is appalling. I have submitted pictures of an area near the drivers side front wheel. The sway bar is barley being held on due to the rust.

13 Body problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2018

Truck frame rotted.

14 Body problem

Failure Date: 11/22/2017

Frame developed 14mm rust perforation at transmission support cross member despite corrosion resistance compound being applied as part of limited service campaign by the manufacturer. Weaker frame reduces the structural rigidity and compromises safety in the event of a collision. Sudden frame fracture may also lead to a loss of control of the vehicle.

15 Body problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2017

Frame is rotted so bad that axle rod seperated from the frame. My mechanic told me not to drive it home as it is extreamily unsafe. Rear axle could fall off the vehicle. Found this out when I brought it to my mechanic for tire service.

16 Body problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2017

The vehicle was sent into Toyota when we received a letter to have the frame sprayed ,due to living in cold climate where salt was used to treat roads. Now frame is totally rotted and rusted making it unsafe to drive. Toyota is only replacing their tacomas and not the Sequoia from the same year.

17 Body problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2017

Abnormal rust all over underside of vehicle including frame, structural components, brake lines, steering components … etc. Frame and steering/suspension components rusting out. Rear differential rusting out. Cab mounts rusting out. Spare tire hardware rusting out. Transmission cooler lines about to burst from corrosion. Rear tow assembly rusting out. Entire underside is rotting out. Known issue which has plagued hundreds of owners, but Toyota has not recalled this model year. Extremely dangerous; one brake line has already gone out resulting in a loss of braking. Toyota applied an undercoating circa 2013 but they just sprayed over an already rusted frame and other components without proper preparation which actually accelerated the corrosion and rot. Deceptive and unethical business practices. Vehicle cost over $50,000 new in 2003 and only has just over 120,000 miles on it. This should not be happening. Please help. Please investigate.

Tl- the contact owns a 2003 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated that there had been extensive rust and corrosion concerning the front to back for the frame. The extensive nature of the potential failure may cause the frame to fracture so the contact was uncertain if the part may fail. The dealer arlington Toyota, 2095 n rand rd, palatine, IL 60074, (847) 485-1200 indicated that the vehicle was included in a manufacturer campaign to service the frame, the contact was not notified and they indicated that the statute had expired to provide a remedy. 25 Body problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2014

I received a recall notice from Toyota for my '03 Sequoia limited and took it to kolosso Toyota (appleton, WI) for frame inspection and application of a material that prevents corrosion, due to a recall, in 2014. I called kolosso to schedule my truck to be seen well before the due date of 7-31-14, in June 2014. Kolosso said it had to order the special "kit" to apply material to my frame and scheduled my inspection and application for early August 2014, after 7-31-14 (due date). They said the kit wouldn't arrive until August and there was nothing anyone could do. Everything would be fine because the kit wouldn't even be available until August 2014. I received a frantic call from kolosso on 7-13-14 while I was working literally 2 hours away in milwaukee, WI that my truck had to be inspected in appleton that day in order for the recall to be valid. Kolosso said it was their fault for scheduling me in August 2014 but Toyota suddenly deemed 7-31-14 the absolute deadline for the recall. So I had to leave work unexpectedly to drive 2 hours away for inspection. An extreme inconvenience! the dealership did not compensate me in any way for my upset. They placed all blame squarely on Toyota. I said, as a customer, I had done everything the dealership said and I had done nothing wrong. This argument was between kolosso and Toyota but I was penalized. As of this date, 2 years later, kolosso has still not applied the special coating to my frame to prevent corrosion. I have never received a call from them to schedule this. I feel this is illegal. I complied fully with the recall by the deadline. I have received no indemnification in any capacity. And since that time, I've gotten recall notices for other things but if kolosso won't help me, what am I supposed to do? they're a Toyota dealership. I am a completely disgusted Toyota victim with a body frame that is likely corroded.

26 Body problem

Failure Date: 12/25/2013

When you grab the rear handle to open the rear hatch, the handle assembly becomes disengaged from the assembly inside the door. This is the second time this has happened. When you google the following, "sequoia rear latch" or "sequoia rear latch cable" or "sequoia rear larch problems" or "sequoia rear hatch problems" you will get hundreds of hits. This appears to be an ongoing problem. Sequoia inside door handles also repeatedly break. Every time there's a break with the rear latch, it's a $500 fix.

27 Body problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2013

The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mph, the rear door latch opened independently. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnosis or repair. The manufacturer had not been made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 165,000.

28 Body problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2013

The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, the brakes failed to respond as the vsc and check engine warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a private mechanic where it was advised that the entire underbody carriage was rusted, resulting in diminished braking capability. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 140,000.

29 Body problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2013

I want to bring attention to the a fatal flaw designed into Toyota truck frames. I understand Toyota denied my claim and I am out of luck with the repairs on my truck. However it is morally responsible for me to bring awareness to this deadly issue. Since most owners don't know they have a problem until the frame breaks, it is worth raising awareness to save human life. This is not a cosmetic issue, its a life or death issue for the consumer. The frame on my truck is completely rusted. In 2013, a Toyota dealership did a frame inspection on my 2003 truck per the recall notice to the previous owner. Toyota had a safety recall for a two step frame replacement for 12 years. The inspection noted an excessive amount of corrosion and rust on the frame components. In 2014, another Toyota dealership decided to spray a sealer over the rust instead of replacing the frame. The sealer trapped moisture and accelerated the oxidation process. This made the problem worse and the rust spread and destroyed the metal to a point its not repairable or safe to drive. The frame of the truck is only 20 years old and was garage kept. However it was operated in a cold climate where salt is applied to the roadways. After filing a several cases with Toyota us I was told its the consumers responsibility and the case was denied. Me and the previous owner did follow the guidelines set forth by the safety frame recall. Since Toyota worked on the frame during the time of the recall they should be held responsible for any liability to human life. Now that these vehicle are starting to age we will start see fatalities on our roadways that will be directly linked to bad frame design. Crumple zones and vehicle safety systems are not effective when the structure they are built upon are defective. I have attached pictures and dealer paperwork for review.

30 Body problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2012

I took the Sequoia to a mechanic to repair a clunking noise in the front and squeaking noise in the back. Upon examination, the mechanic noticed unusually advanced rust and corrosion for a vehicle of its age. For safety reasons, the mechanic warned against driving the vehicle until repairs were made. Mechanic had to cut out front passenger control arm bolts, rear shock mounts, and other hardware due to the corrosion. Mechanic noted that future repairs will require the same cutting and replacement of new hardware. This corrosion issue may be related to the 2000-2003 Toyota tundra recall of 2009, since the Sequoia shares the chassis and manufacturing facility with the tundra.

31 Body problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2012

We had intermittent off/on of interior lights while driving, but only during left turns. There was no (important) "door ajar" alert which normally would present as a red icon warning on the dash, there was no warning light. I worked as a mech. Engineer and tested all doors for "play", how tight the door closed. The right front passenger door was loose. I opened the door, checked if the seatbelt was shut-in with the door but all was normal. I wiggled the latch which is screwed in by 2 large star/allen screws. That was it, it was very loose, it took 5 turns to tighten each one. I checked the other doors, all were just fine. The door would have opened if this latch came all the way out, even belted in, a person could be injured.

32 Body problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2012

The undercarriage on my Sequoia has much rust. It is an '03 that has been garage kept since new. My husband has an '03 Acura with absolutely no rust. . . Yet has faced the exact same conditions. I saw the recall for tundra undercarriage rust and wondered why the Sequoia (which is basically the same frame) wasn't included. I've read about many Sequoia's that won't pass inspection due to undercarriage rust.

33 Body problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2011

Brought vehicle in for service/schedule maintenance which was not completed; was advised by service technician that there was a hole rotted in the frame behind the driver side front wheel. Was advised to call customer experience center & open a case number with them. Was advised similar problem with the tundra & tacoma models.

34 Body problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2011

When I came to pick up my vehicle from my personal mechanic (June 2011) after he had replaced the brake pads and rotors, he warned me about serious undercarriage rust. Despite my vehicle only having 64000 miles on it at the time he indirectly suggested selling the vehicle in the next year or two as this premature rusting will be a very serious problem that I won't want to deal with. I wonder why the tundra had a recall on the frame and not the Sequoia? is this vehicle safe?.

35 Body problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2006

In July 2006 at 52000 miles I went to exit the vehicle and the door handle breaks off in my hand. Dealer said not covered as it is wear & tear. I am not a tough guy, but cheap plastic handles, especially on the driver door as it is the most used? $139 is a waste of consumer $ and for an extra dollar they could have made a stronger handle.
