Failure Date: 05/20/2019

Two weeks ago we were told that the frame had rusted through and the car was unsafe to drive. After doing research we found out that Toyota had a limited frame repair offer but we missed the deadline. We were never told by Toyota or the dealership service team about the recall or the damage to our truck. We had our car serviced at the dealership numerous times. The mechnic that told us about the rust told us it was dangerous to drive. The truck only has 120k miles and we are the original owners.

4 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2018

My Toyota Sequoia 4x4 limited has about 230000 miles. I was driving this vehicle down the highway and slowed down to take a turn and heard a large "thunk". I then continued to drive and later as I got up to about 60 vehicle started shaking violently. I pulled over and checked under heath and the frame had separated due to rust at the stabilizer bar for the rear passenger side frame. I was going to drive it to the dealership and upon further inspection the frame is just rust for the full rear section of the frame and has large holes due to rust. It is definitely unsafe to drive. I found out that it had extended warranty to cover this issue till 2014. I reached out to Toyota and they said there is nothing they can do. Toyota knew there was an issue. I was unable to get any help. I just purchased the vehicle in may 2018 from a private party and Toyota told me that the risk I take purchasing private party.

8 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2018

I took my Sequoia to the dealer for it's regular service. I was called and told that there is a 50 cent size hole in my frame (passager side) I was told Toyota had a night mare with many of there Sequoias having had the frame replaced. He said according to Toyota mine was recalled and sprayed with some type of spray over the entire frame. I told him that was impossible since I am the second owner and I had it during the time he referenced and Toyota never contacted me about this issue, nor did they spray it. For if they did you would be able to tell it all over the under-body because of the over spray. There in nothing under the body except a rusted faulty frame. I contacted Toyota they said the same as the dealer and that if my SUV had been a year newer they would put a new frame on it, even though they use the exact same frame. Toyota knows what they are doing here.

Failure Date: 11/17/2017

I live in northern ky and I was driving west on ky 20. I was driving straight all of a sudden the front of the vehicle pulls right and the back pulls left . When I got the vehicle to safely stop I noticed the rear frame of the vehicle broke in half. It broke because it rusted in half. This could of killed me. Luckily no one was coming on the other side of the rd. My mechanic said the frame rusted in half. I bought this vehicle in 2015 im the second owner. I paid 6000 for the truck put 1200 in new wheels and another 2400 in safety and preventitive maintience at Toyota. I would not exspect this to occure. Especially when I had the vehicle safety inspected. No my options are to replace the frame or junk the vehicle. Either way im out big money on a truck I love. I thank god my great neices and nephew was not in the truck when the frame rusted through and broke. They were in there the day before. Im blessed we didnt get hurt that could have went very bad. I believe if I was on the interstate I would have got hurt or even killed. This vehicle rusting out that bad is not safe. Ive noticed manay others have complained about the frame rusting out too. This concerns me for many others that own this vehicle.

Failure Date: 08/14/2017

Underbody frame rusted.

14 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 05/22/2017

Our vehicle was deemed unsafe to drive by a Toyota dealer due to an excessively rusted frame that has prematurely lost its integrity. The "limited service" campaign that was implemented by Toyota on our car (1/9/2013) was ineffective in preventing the disintegration of the frame of this vehicle. I have since learned that the frame on my vehicle was already known to be defective and it was recalled by Toyota for replacement on the Toyota tundra. Why then hasn't Toyota recalled the very same frame on the Toyota Sequoia on account of a known defective and unsafe frame?.

17 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2016

To whom it may concern, we are the original owners of a 2003 Toyota Sequoia. The vehicle has developed considerable frame rust damage over the years rusting through and creating a dangerous situation and has been deemed unsafe to drive by the Toyota dealer and other mechanics who have worked on the vehicle. Recently, I took it to penn Toyota, 2400 northern blvd, greenvale, NY 11548 for an oil change and the service manager there refused to put the vehicle on a regular lift because of fear of the frame collapsing (see attached service receipt). This is a family vehicle used with our 3 kids and we are extremely concerned for the safety of our family when driving it. The corrosion is so bad that areas of the frame have crumbled off and there are significan holes and cracks along the driver side of the frame including frame brackets and support sections. We have reached out to Toyota and they tell us there was no recall for this specific vehicle. However, there have been other frame recalls for similar models (see attached copy of warranty enhancement letter csd limited service campaign (lsc) csd certain 2001 through 2004 model year Sequoia vehicles frame inspection). We need to resolve this issue as soon as possible and are looking to Toyota for some assistance with this most important matter. We have been loyal Toyota customers and have enjoyed our Sequoia experience over the years and look forward to staying loyal customers and able to drive our car for many more years to come provided this issue is resolved to our satisfaction. Please see attached photos of the rusted frame showing the damage. Your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated. Warm regards.

I purchase this 2003 Toyota Sequoia in 2003 brand new and at the moment the frame is rusting at an alarming rate. I would like to know if the manufacturer (Toyota) is making any plans to rectifying this problem?.

22 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2013

Received Toyota factory recall for corrosion-resistant compound due to excessive frame rust. Called local dealer and also factory Toyota for appointment. Took the vehicle in to the dealership. One day later received phone call that my vehicle was safe and that they had sprayed this coating on the vehicle. I picked up vehicle and this corrosive chemical is dripping of the vehicle and is not drying. Concerned for environment and also, I have no idea of how vehicle was inspected assuring that the frame is safe.

23 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2013

The rear window motor and window tracks have rusted completely. The motor has failed and the window tracks are completly rusted away. The window is not unoperable. There is a short in the O2 sensor wiring underneath the vehicle. There is currently a recall on the above vehicle regarding frame rust. I believe that the above complaints are directly related to the rust issues that this vehicle has.

24 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2012

Anti sway bar cannot be connected back to frame since the frame is rusted. I was told that in order to fix it, I would need my entire frame replaced and that none of this was covered under any warranty or recall. Estimated cost of repair is estimated to be at least $13,000. The vehicle is not safe to drive. Since the Sequoia has the same frame as a tundra, why isn't the Sequoia frame rust problem also being recalled like the tundra?.

25 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2011

The frame on my vehicle cracked, and this caused the top of the strut to come up through the floorboard. The Toyota dealer, body shop, and independent insurance appraiser say that this was not caused by an accident or other impact. They said the frame had metal fatigue and simply failed. This poses a serious hazard if a lightly driven vehicle such as mine, well-cared for and driven in a suburban setting, the frame would crack in 8 years. I saw online that there was a frame recall for 2001-2003 tundras and Sequoias (which share the same frame). The recall was for only 18 states where there is heavy snow, causing the frames to rust through. Toyota was forced to replace the entire frame. I believe that the frames were faulty from a manufacturing defect for this to occur. I want to make sure that you have this information as it may be part of a more wide-spread problem that Toyota is not telling anyone about.

26 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2011

The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken in for a routine maintenance when she was advised that the front frame was rusted, corroded and exhibited a hole in the frame. The dealer then advised the contact that the vehicle was unsafe to operate. The manufacturer was notified of the failure who offered her a credit to purchase another vehicle but the contact declined. The failure mileage was 81,903.

27 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2011

Frame has rusted through.

28 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 08/29/2011

Took 2003 Sequoia to baierl dealership on August 26, 2011 in cranberry, PA for 130,000 mile check up. Mechanic noticed "hole' in frame behind front right wheel. Upon further inspection with another mechanic there are several areas where frame is rusted through behind front wheels. Toyota says this issue is not covered under warranty. Upon investigation on this site and others, it seems that model years 2000-2003 tacoma's, tundra's and Sequoia's all have this issue. Toyota has extended the warranty to address this issue on tacoma's and tundra's, but not Sequoia's for some reason. The vehicle will not pass inspection now and Toyota themselves have said I would have to take it to a body shop where it could possibly be repaired, but no guarantees. I am looking for a resolution to this issue.

29 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2011

My 2003 Toyota Sequoia was rustproofed annually but exhibits an unusual amount of rust on the frame. The spare time is ready to fall off .

30 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2011

My 2003 Toyota Sequoia is experiencing heavy frame rust, to the point of being a safety concern for the integrity of the frame and undercarriage. I am filing this complaint that it is my understanding the Sequoia and tundra frames are identical and built by the same factory. The same model year Toyota tundra's have been recalled for heavy frame rust, but the Sequoia's have not. I feel that the Sequoia models are seeing the same rust problem found on the Toyota tundra's and should likewise be recalled as well.

31 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2010

The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated that one year ago he was advised by the dealer there was light rusting of the frame. The dealer advised that the vehicle was safe to drive. One year later, the vehicle was taken to a local repair facility for routine maintenance when the contact was informed that the frame exhibited severe rust. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the vehicle was investigated for the failure. The dealer escalated pictures of the frame to the manufacturer however; the manufacturer would not provide any assistance. The manufacturer stated that any repairs would be the liability of the contact. The contact was concerned that the vehicle would not pass inspection and that the vehicle was not safe to drive. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 139,000. Updated 11/16/10.
