7 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/28/2021

The tail gate will not open. I had the vehicle since 2018 and it was working and now it's not working. I taken it to Toyota dealership and the cost is to much for at this point. I was wondering is there anything that can be done?.

8 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2019

Yesterday my mechanic noticed that the frame underneath was all rusted and falling apart. That parts on frame could fall while I am driving. I took to Toyota dealer by where I live. They said that recalled had just expired. What a coincidence. Please help. I dont want to have an accident.

9 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2019

Entire frame assembly has rusted and vehicle is unsafe to drive. Toyota dealership, upon air bag recall fix, informed me of a recall or warranty repair for the Sequoia rusted frames. Toyota corporate claims they cannot do anything since the "recall' has expired. I never received a notification. Many others have this same issue and Toyota is fully aware of this problem and has recalled other model years for frame replacements. Does someone need to die before we get appropriate action?.

10 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2018

The rear drivers frame snapped in half. Broke in front of rear wheel. No help from Toyota. So it sits in driveway. Rumor has it a recall is on way.

11 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/30/2017

We bought it in 2014 with 76k and the frame had recently been coated. Supposedly it was from texas, and we live in northern minnesota. The frame looked good and seemed solid, but within a year or two all of the coating fell off revealing very rusty metal. By 3 years (2017) there were holes in the bottom of the frame mainly behind the front tires area, and the rest of the frame is also quite rusty. I had to replace the front sway bar end links but they broke soon after and kept breaking within a few months after repeated replacement due to excessive frame movement. It feels less safe without a functional sway bar attached to the frame and has more body roll with more risk of rollover. The frame is rotting from the inside out, and the rust is spreading like cancer in the surrounding areas underneath. The body has almost no rust at all. I parked it in the winters twice now, hoping to buy time. But I'm counting the days that it will be unsafe to drive anymore. I'm not even sure when to determine when that will be, and am hoping it doesn't have catastrophic failure at highway speeds like others have had with the earlier Sequoias. I bought this for my wife and paid $16000 cash for it. We've put on 60k miles but expected to get many more years out of it being that it is so solid and reliable otherwise. This frame is horrible, and probably would have shown itself a problem sooner, had it not been in texas most of its previous years. It is wrong that the 01-04 years are excluded from the recall that only covered the 05-08 models, when it is obvious the same problem existed then as well based on so many similar reports. Toyota got money from the frame makers and us customers should be reimbursed for the severely prematurely rusting frames, that will be taking 10 or more years off the life of the vehicle otherwise. Please address and take this problem seriously.

12 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2017

Rusted frame, very close to failing state safety inspection, frame was spray painted by the dealar three years ago under Toyota frame recall, poorly applied paint peeled off with-in couple of months of the application. Now frame of the SUV is severely rusted. It passed the safety inspection today but inspector found holes in the frame caused by the rust.

13 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2017

Rear door handle and cable brakes with little pressure. Many owners have same issue on same make model. Continued expensive repair results in owners jerry rigging their vehicles to open rear door. If this is happening to numerous owners than we feel strongly that it is a company default and should be fixed! my latest repair on it was $600 and its disgusting to have to fix it all the time. It doesn't take much to have the cable brake. It's plastic, cheap plastic doesn't help matters much either.

14 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2016

Check engine light come on. Along with 2 other lights. This has occurred over 10 to 12 times since owning this SUV. Each time it is noted on my paper work no leaks found and gas cap replaced. I have spent each time on a average $578 at least for a gas cap after they have checked out the car. I even had this problem when the car was under warranty but of course no charge then. I notice other Toyota vehicles have recall on this check engine lights. I think the Sequoia should get included in this it is the same thing. I can only imagine how much money owners of these suvs have paid out because of this. I notice this check engine light came on after I put gas in. The light will not go off until you take in it in to the dealership who then charges you the $578 or more it simply ripping the consumer off.

15 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2016

A recall that I feel is warranted for Toyota to attend to which is vsc off/trac off and check engine light all on. I have countlessely researched why this happens and spent a lot of money trying to fix it but still no luck. There are a lot of complaints on the internet about this issue. Please help and push this recall from Toyota. Thanks!.

16 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2015

Severe rust to the frame.

17 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2015

My 2004 Toyota Sequoia was the subject of a limited service campaign, no. Tc-13-013, for abnormal frame corrosion. A Toyota dealer applied a corrosion resistant compound (crc) to the frame and underside of the vehicle on March 27, 2014. I had my car serviced in August 2015 and discovered that large parts of the frame are significantly corroded, with much of the crc no longer present on the frame. Toyota responded to my complaint on August 21, 2015 by stating that the warranty for the crc is one year and that it would not authorize an inspection of the vehicle, reapplication of the crc or replacement of the frame. The frame corrosion is documented in photographs.

18 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2015

I sold the automobile listed above on 08/13/15 to an individual and realized after that I did not remove the plate from the car. Because I live in nc, I will have to return the plates before canceling the insurance. The current owner is driving under my registration and insurance.

19 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2015

My engine light comes on then the vsc and trac control light . I clear codes but they return. I'm afraid to drive this vehicle since we use it mainly to pull our boat .

20 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2015

Hello I purchased a 2004 Toyota Sequoia through a private sale on 4/1/15. We brought the car home and took it to our local mechanic to have a new exhaust system put in. At that time we where told that the vehicle has extensive frame rust and holes and we should take it to a Toyota dealer. After bringing the car to the dealer, we where told that the vehicle has frame rust and holes from front to rear and the vehicle will not pass state inspection. I call corporate Toyota and was told that they cannot do anything about this since the campaign to replace/fix the frames expired 7/31/2014. So basically we have a 2004 Toyota Sequoia that is a no good and Toyota is not going to take care of their faulty frame.

21 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/30/2015

Made a left hand turn and the control arm broke off from rusted frame while traveling at about ten mph. Repair center say's the vehicle is a total loss, because the frame is not safe, nothing to re-attach control arm to!.

22 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/29/2014

*filed with attorney general of new york* recall was issued on the 2004 Sequoia due to corrosion. On July 25, 2013 we brought our car to the dealership to apply a protective coat and waited a week for the car to be returned to us. We had to return the vehicle, September, 2014, to the dealer with the same problem, the spray was flaking off exposing the rust underneath. The vehicle was sprayed for the second time in one day and that time we were told the vehicle's rear axle trailing arm mount was almost separated from the rear axle housing due to the corrosion and it was recommended to replace the axle. At that time we asked if this could have been to the recall of the corrosion, flat out we were told no. We then proceed to take the vehicle to our personal mechanic for second opinion, October 27, 2014, and he confirmed the axle is damage and the frame of the vehicle is in such poor condition that it must be first addressed before replacing the axle; he also mentioned to us this is the second Sequoia that he had seen with the same issue, along he told us the second spraying was done incorrectly, it was not cleaned out they just sprayed over the flaking protective coat and the rust. Our mechanic said the vehicle should not be used because it is not safe and he is willing to sign an affidavit if necessary.

23 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2014

The dash board right above the air bag panel appears to be melting. There is a sticky substance like glue all over it. All attempts to clean it have failed. It looks like the dash panel is just melting. Any thing that touches it sticks to it like glue to include skin and hair.

24 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2014

The frame has been recalled. As a result of the recall it was determined that the frame would not be replaced but sprayed with anti rust coating instead. The coating peeled almost immediately. Complaints were made but the dealer refused to replace the frame at time of recall. Currently the frame is practically falling apart. We are unable to get a replacement vehicle at this time nor can we sell it as is. What are our options at this time? thank-you.

25 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2014

Received notification from Toyota that my Sequoia was being recalled for frame corrosion. Obviously this could cause safety concerns in the future. They stated that the last for remedy was July 31,2014. I brought the Sequoia to my local dealer (miracle Toyota, haines city florida). The dealer examined the vehicle and said it required remedy, but they could not perform these services because they did have the proper tools and supplies. I called the Toyota corporate office shown on the recall notice and they gave me a case number 14070872160. I was called the next day by nicole at Toyota corporate office and was told that my local dealer could not perform the service and that I would have to drive my vehicle a 1,000 miles to a dealer that could perform the service. I am 65 years old and only drive my vehicle locally- have not driven on expressways for many years, thus it is impossible for me to remedy this safety issue. My vehicle is registered in illinois but has been in florida the last two years since my son drove it down to florida from illinois to my retirement home. It is not reasonable to ask senior citizens to drive 1,000 miles to fix a safety problem created by Toyota. Please help me with this situation. I am holding Toyota responsible for any future safety hazards that may affect this vehicle, whish I intend to drive for many more years.

26 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2014

The vsc, trac off and break light all came on while I was picking speed from the stopping at the light. Previous to that, my husband has brought the car in to inquire about the break light coming on and off and Toyota stated there was nothing wrong with the car. Initially, I was told I could drive the car without any difficulties and once my car /account was pulled/viewed in the system then I was told to bring the car in immediately - within 30 minutes. Now I am being told that flush brake system - all, booster assy, cylinder sub assy, master cylinder seal,2 gaskets which is now costing me over $2,000. I have seen many complaints and recall on this same problem. Please advise. Thank you.

27 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/18/2014

We had a voluntary recall on our Sequoia, we took it to the dealership in wilkesboro nc and they took pictures and sent the Toyota and said we would be safe driving it in March of 2014. That was wrong on may 18th the sway bar ripped from the frame causing Toyota to have to come get it on a roll back and I have been stuck in a small car with three kids 13, 8, & 3 since that date. I personally do not feel safe in the car either as of course they sent me in it. I would like for Toyota to send out a apology to others as well as myself for sending vehicles out with a frame that wouldn't last. My Sequoia is in great condition other than the frame with 116,500 miles on it. I have dealt with corporate as if my husband who was with me wouldn't have been it could have caused a major incident as I am on the road constantly and on interstates. I have lost two children due to stillbirths and I don't fill like Toyota cares about it's customers and their lives.

28 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2014

In January 2013, we received a recall notice from Toyota on our 2004 Toyota Sequoia as Toyota was concerned about the vehicles frames rusting prematurely. Toyota-trained technicians at dealer assessed our frame and determined it was not rusting and, accordingly, we did not need a new frame. Instead, the technicians sanded the frame and applied a coating to the frame that was designed to increase the longevity of the frame by preventing rust. We had no choice in the matter. We did not choose to accept the coating in lieu of a new frame, the coating was the only option we were offered. Recently, we noticed rust on the car and returned to dealer. Dealer looked at the car and determined that the frame had completely rusted through and the car was unsafe to drive. Up until that date my family was driving the car on a regular basis having no idea it was unsafe. This is a mere 15 months after Toyota technicians assessed the frame and concluded the frame was safe. I called Toyota and have been stonewalled. Their position is that the recall was satisfied when they applied the coating and matter is closed. A mistake had to have been made because a frame that is safe, rust free, and coated with something to increase longevity and prevent rust has to last longer than 15 months. Dealer either erred in its initial assessment in 2013 (meaning frame was in fact rusted and should have been replaced) or erred in applying the anti-rusting coating. Bottom line is that Toyota should have replaced the frames on all of their vehicles. This process of coating the frame obviously does not work and there are likely many u. S. Citizens driving Sequoias that are coated but unsafe like mine. Toyota is knowingly allowing people to drive unsafe cars and must be stopped. My Toyota case number is 140-512-0739.

29 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2013

While decelerating towards an intersection that I had to stop at vsc dash indicator light, brake light, & trac light all came on. Then, as I pressed the brake pedal I heard deep crunching noises from the braking system (sounded like front end). There was also loud "clanking" noises, as if something was banging around the inside of the rim or brake rotor. All the noises were also physically felt on my braking foot at the same time they sounded. My foot was was being dropped and pushed noticeably by the brake pedal. I almost rear-ended the car in front of me because the braking power from fluctuating independently from strong to almost none within a matter of a few seconds. The same dash warning lights have been continuing to turn on for the last 5 or 6 weeks (sometimes all of them, sometimes one at a time), but the physical braking issue happened to me again today 9-11-13. I was on a back street so I tried to video it with my phone but couldn't get the camera set to video in time; and it stopped after occurring at three different braking attempts. The car fluctuated its way to a stop with the same crunching noises (no clanking) this time. The pressure fully changed on the brake pedal as the issue took place and I had little control of exactly when braking would happen. Have you seen the amount of times this is happening? are you reading these threads? I'm concerned to take my kids in the car. I'm concerned in letting my less experienced 18 year old drive it as usual. I went to the dealer and they were clueless and said that was part if the way the car kept me safe on wet roads. Neither incident occur on wet roads. I've been driving for 25 years; I did not have control of the braking in my vehicle two times in last 6 weeks due to a vehicle system going haywire! driving this vehicle is a hazard! please do something before someone gets hurt or killed because of this!.

30 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2013

I received a "limited service campaign" notice regarding corrosion-resistant compound application to be applied to my 2004 Toyota Sequoia. I brought the vehicle in to the dealer and was given a loaner car for the 4 days they had my vehicle, which I was thankful for. They said my Sequoia's frame was not rusted through and applied a very sticky, messy , shiny tar-like substance that now 6 days later is still not dry. Toyota dealer also told me I needed about $5000 in repairs (which I brought to my local mechanic and fixed for $380), but that's not why I am writing. I am very concerned for my familys safety in this vehicle after reading hundreds of complaints on the Sequoia on the many Toyota forum websites available. I also have the same problems that are discussed in the forums including excessive rust inside the tailgate causing the tailgate window to not operate and also rust so bad we can't even use the hitch on our vehicle which was the main reason we purchased the vehicle to begin with. It is a complete rust bucket.

31 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2013

Shift lever assembly may allow rollaway. I initially was wondering and second guessing myself but this is something that never happened to me with another vehicle so I did find it strange until I saw this recall. I do think the Sequoia has the same problem as the sienna because twice this has happened to me once in my driveway and the second time was at a gas station. I had to jump in the vehicle because it started to roll back almost 2 mins after I got out of the vehicle and caused some damage to my door while I was trying to jump back into the vehicle before it caused major damage. I know the car mfg do not want to fix these problems because it costs them millions of dollars but I think people lives are worth much more. They need to own up before it costs them more.

32 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

Driving to a stop when vsc lights, abs, check engine light, trac off dashboard indicator lights turned on. When brakes were applied, experienced a jumping. Already had brakes replaced, tires rotated and alignment done. Contacted auto service technician and was told after a diagnostic was performed that issue is due to a faulty computer system with the abs system how the computer reads the car performance. Was told that only a Toyota dealer would have to replace the entire computer system which is costly. The warning lights go on and off randomly as if the computer system is malfunctioning.

33 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2013

Upon exiting the freeway I was on a right-turning off-ramp when I heard beeping and a crunching noise coming from the front end. It sounded as if something was seriously wrong with the vehicle. Once I was off the freeway, I pulled over and the warning lights had gone off. It has happened a few times since then, however it's only been the beeping, not the loud crunching noise. In searching online, it appears this is the same issue that the 2003's were recalled for. There have been so many complaints that Toyota should do the right thing and recall the 2004's as well.

34 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2012

Rear door will not open at all. Rear window also will not work. I find this a safety issue as someone could be trapped inside if there was a crash. Also can not access spare tire. Toyota should recall this ay their expense. There are way too many complaints on this issue even after people have paid for repairs, it breaks again. Safety comes first.

35 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

Vsc off, vsc trac lights go on and off all the time. Along with the check engine lights.
