2 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 08/02/2013

The contact owns a 2001 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated that the rear tailgate latch became fractured and as a result, it prevented him from opening the door from the inside of the vehicle. The contact mentioned that the failure recurred several times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the door lock actuator was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 137,000.

4 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2007 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/05/2012

The rear latch which controls the opening of the rear hatch broke. This part is made of plastic (perhaps costing 0. 30), and it is sheltered from direct sun and wear and tear by being covered with a part of the hatch which is made of steel. The hatch when this part is broken cannot be opened. This means one cannot gain access to the spare tire or the rear of the vehicle. This part costs over $90, and the labor to repair is approximately $170. Combined this approaches $300 with tax. When I brought this into the local Toyota dealership, I was informed that this was a common problem, and they pointed out that they had two other Sequoias currently in the shop having the same repair being performed. They had the part in stock because it occurs so often. A search on the internet has shown that this has occurred tens of thousands of times. A recall would appear to be in order.

5 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2004 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 02/01/2012

The rear door latch failed, making the door inoperable. Use of the door for entry and exit was impossible, creating a safety hazard. Repair of this latch failure is expensive ($400 - $700) and inconvenient. The design of the part and the material used (plastic) appears to be at fault. A heavier duty metal part is now available from after market parts dealers. The problem appears to be common and widespread judging from a discussion with a local Toyota dealer service center and judging from the number of complaints and information on the internet.

6 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 04/14/2011

The rear hatch on my 2002 Toyota Sequoia will open intermittently. Sometimes it will open , but most of the time it will not. When it does open, it will not lock. This should be a safety recall because if you have a flat tire, there is no way to lower the spare.

7 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 03/18/2011

2006 Toyota Sequoia back door lock is brokedn. I know of 2 other owners with the same defect. If I was in an accident and need to escape through to open the back door hatch. I would be unable to do so because of the defect.

8 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 02/13/2011

2001 Toyota Sequoia rear trunk latch broken. Apparently this is a reoccurring problem with the Sequoia. Once latch is broken, rear trunk can not be opened. You can not open it from the interior since there is not mechanism to do so. Cost to replace the broken latch is costly to consumers. I have contacted Toyota about this problem with their Sequoia, but was told that they have not gotten any complaints. I did a web search and there are thousands who have encountered this problem. Therefor, it is not covered under warranty or recall. Bad design and cheap material used by Toyota. Far as safety, you can not have any passengers in the third row since the broken latch does not permit opening operation should one need to get those passengers out. Diffidently a safety hazard and potential entrapment for those in the rear seats. Part is available at a modest cost, but having dealing install is costly.

9 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 01/28/2011

All of a sudden the rear lift gate handle stopped working. . A plastic part broke. I repaired the liftgate by drilling it and inserting a nut and screw to hold it in place thus making it stronger. That worked for about a year. It just broke again.

10 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/14/2010

2003 Toyota Sequoia limited rear hatch handle breaks off. Can't open rear liftgate. This is a known problem since 1999 with Toyota. There are several Toyota forums with over 500 complaints of the same problem. Apparently, the handle part is inferior it is made out of plastic. The part has not been changed since 1999 and is still used. Most Sequoia owners have had to have this problem fixed more than one time. The problem starts from water pooling in the hatch area under the liftgate. As a result, the lock /hatch handle area corrodes/rusts puts tension on the handle and then eventually breaks. The part fails without warning except that the latch may be hard to open for quite awhile before completely breaking. I am the original owner and have had this latch problem since the first year of ownership . Ask anyone who owns a Sequoia, and the will have or have had the same problem. The repair cost is approximately $500. 00. This is a safety issue, you cannot access the rear properly and or get to the spare tire. Toyota dealership if out of warranty will charge you anywhere from $500 to as much as $800 dollars to repair the problem. Generally, they seem to tell the owners that it is a wear item.

11 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/01/2010

Interior door handle failure - only method of exiting vehicle. Failed for a third time under normal use before reporting to NHTSA. If vehicle is in a crash, on fire, or under water, a person will panic and exert greater force than normal on the handle, snapping it, leading to potential death. Dealer told me they have "hundreds" of these come through. Ask Toyota how many they have replaced to get actual scope. They have no incentive to correct failure since dealer makes $250. 00 to correct the failure. No egress in a burning car is equivalent to no fire exit doors in a burning building.

12 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2007 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/31/2010

Rear door handle latch broken, trying to open the rear door when latch just broke and was unable to open the rear.

13 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

Rear door on 2001 Toyota Sequoia wont lock. . . Latch doesnt catch causing the making the rear cargo door to open.

14 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2004 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 08/09/2010

2004 Toyota Sequoia. The rear door (hatch) external door handle fails mid way during normal operation leading the door to continuously be ajar during vehicle operation. Door handle is disabled and there is no other way to open/close door (there is no internal handle). Total failure. Local Toyota dealer service department stated that this part fails often on Toyota Sequoias and Toyota siennas. Search of internet website reveals failure is due to use of "cheap plastic parts" on this essential piece of vehicle equipment.

15 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2010 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 06/29/2010

2007 Toyota Sequoia: latch on rear tailgate broke with 62k miles and 2. 5 years into owning new vehicle purchased from dealer. This appears to be a common issue with many Sequoia and sienna owners (based on various blogs and message boards that are found on the internet). The part appears to be made of plastic and connects off center to the cable that allows the rear door to be opened. The dealer charges $254 for the parts and labor for the repair. Based on how many complaints exist regarding a piece that should work for many, many years, it seems to be apparent that this part has deficiencies in its design. Toyota, at this time, does not have this on any recall list and doesn't make sense. My previous vehicle was a 2001 Toyota 4-runner and worked perfectly for 7 years and 155k miles before trading it in for the existing Sequoia. Toyota needs to be accountable for the flaw in the design and provide owners with the necessary repairs at no cost, which should also include a redesigned latch that will not fail time after time.

16 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2007 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 06/27/2010

1. 2007 Toyota Sequoia rear door latch broken. The event occurs by attempting to open the rear latch. 2. The failure occurs because the rear latch would jam, and the owner was just trying to open the door the normal way. This also occurs on the regular doors as well. 3. I will contact the dealership about the failure.

17 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 04/30/2010

Concerning 2006 Toyota Sequoia - the rear tailgate latch lever broke. There is no interior tailgate release button. Dealership replaced it at our cost because they said it was no longer under warranty. Original and replacement lever is made of plastic with all the stress on a small piece of plastic. My own research has shown that many people have had this problem. It would appear that this could be a safety issue if rear occupants of the 3rd row seat had to exit through the tailgate in an emergency and the latch were to break again (or be broken from an impact/accident).

18 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

2002 Sequoia. Now have had to replace the trunk latch twice as each time it has rusted out and would not latch. Very expensive repair.

19 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

Toyota Sequoia rear door latch broke. Can't open it from inside or outside. Two previous door handles broke last year. Driver door and passenger door. Back doors are only ones that have lasted. Three door handles failed on one car within one year. On a truck nonetheless, something that should be sturdy. What if they broke upon falling in an emergency?.

20 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 01/22/2010

I own a 2006 Toyota Sequoia limited. When it rained I noticed water was getting in the vehicle at the rear hatch and under the right center row seat. I took my vehicle to a Toyota dealer but they were unable to find the problem. I took it to a different Toyota dealer and they said there was a leak coming from the bolts for the left hatch shock; they removed all rear interior and found "many hardware pieces missing". The dealer states the bolts were removed, cleaned, and applied silicone to them. Apparently the leak is gone. However, whenever it rains, I am concerned the problem could come back.

21 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/14/2009

2003 Toyota Sequoia vsc/trac computer problems causing unnecessary braking. Also breaking of rear door latch and inability to open rear door.

22 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 07/15/2009

In July of last year, my 2002 Toyota Sequoia experienced car trouble. The vehicle experienced 3 major problems. First, the rear window on the back of the vehicle would suddenly open all by itself. This self opening would occur at numerous times. The window would open when the vehicle was being driven, when it was stationary or even while it was unoccupied. The scariest however, was when the vehicle was being driven. Fortunately for me and my family no one was injured. The second major problem occurred with the door locks. The locks would lock and unlock themselves repeatedly without anyone touching them. This locking/unlocking would again take place when the vehicle was being driven, stationary or even unoccupied. The last complaint is that the gas gauge will drop to empty without any reason so there are many times that I do not know how much gasoline I have left in the tank. This too is occurring on a random basis. It's like the vehicle is haunted.

23 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2008 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 05/15/2009

2008 Toyota Sequoia, prior to nationwide recall I have complained to Toyota concerning unresponsiveness of the accelerator pedal, as well as other defects in vehicle and I continue to be ignored by both manufacturer and dealership, with dealership making excuses by saying things like different parts of the body where made in different factories causing there to be variants in the color of the vehicle bumper from the rest of the body, and that they are not that familiar with the new model Sequoia since they haven't had them in the shop yet (excuse made in 2009). I made a written request in November in regards to what I call unresponsiveness of the accelerator pedal, when I push the pedal some times the car will accelerate rapidly other times it would do nothing then jump and accelerate without me putting access pressure on the pedal. I also reported on defects in leather seats and body color which is two toned by defect to name a few of the issues. The manufacturer called me, referred me back to the dealership and again the dealership will not do anything about the issues as minimizes them. Here we are in 2010 my car still accelerates when it wants to instead of when I want it to, I still have a car with exterior and interior defects and poor workmanship. And was insulted when the only thing I have received from Toyota was a post card asking me to pay over $200 for a dvd to update my navigation center, which is adding salt to the wound that Toyota has dug if anything Toyota should be doing more then a temporary fix for customers and making us pay more money to fix their issues. The unpredictable acceleration is not from a sticky pedal I believe its electrical, possibly from other electrical devices, such as cell phone, garage door opener remote, gate remotes or door access remotes, all which I carry from time to time in my vehicle, however I cant put my life in danger testing out my theory. Something needs to be done soon, either replace the cars or pay up.

24 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2004 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 04/30/2009

Rear hatch release handle is corroded and frozen. Dealer must break in from the inside, remove back panel to repair. Dealer has seen this problem with other Sequoias. Handle poorly designed if prone to failure due to corrosion. $600 expense to repair.

25 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 03/26/2009

I have a 2003 Toyota Sequoia and the door lock was vandalized in 2007 the door lock was opened and the windows down. Now it happened again in 2009 and how it is possible that this Sequoia came with factory alarm which is !@#$% because the lock can be open so easy they just detach it from the door so easy that you see it because the windows are down. I do not want another Sequoia of Toyota. What security do I have with this locks. It is so simple to open. I would like an explanation. What I do not understand is that how come they open the door and the windows go down I have to start the car for the windows to come down. This was at the morning. Imaging at night. I could not find a website to complain just your site. It seems that the door lock it not attach to the door it is over the door don't you think this is the cheapest way for a Sequoia Toyota it costs a lot of money and I paid for nothing. I do not feel secure in my Sequoia. Can someone help me? I lost all my documents. I can not go to places because I think it will happened again and probably wont see it again. I am afraid to leave my car anywhere even at the garage because the alarm will never ring. Can someone explain to me if the door is open how come the alarm never rang. I do not want to use it at again.

26 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 03/09/2009

While making a turn on the road the rear trunk opened spilling all contents out on the highway. The latch has been an issue before - appears locked but really is not. This could have caused an accident with someone behind me not to mention that if a child (or animal) was in the rear of the vehicle they would have fallen out. The latch was rusted and had to be replaced to the tune of over $300. 00. Toyota has acknowledged that this is a problem but not on the recall list. This should be - along with the leather seats peeling and the rust all over the bottom of the vehicle. I had to also replace stability links (not ball joints which are under recall) rods as well - to the tune of almost 1k. . . Also rusted. There appears to be a significant rusting issue with these particular vehicles! (Toyota Sequoia 2002).

27 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 03/07/2009

To date, the rear door hatch, inside driver passenger door handle and now the rear passenger side door handle have cracked. All component have broken off completely, making opening the doors impossible. This creates a danger for driver and passengers because they cannot readily exit vehicle.

28 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 02/09/2009

The latch on the tailgate on my 2001 Sequoia has now broke 3 times. Today it was acting funny. I brought it into schaumburg Toyota. Instead of warranting it since it was replaced February 20, 2008, they put wd40 on it and sent me on my way. Tonight I opened my back door and it broke again. We brought it back in and they won't cover it.

29 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 01/05/2009

The back door handle/latch malfunctions and I can no longer open the back door. In 2007 I went to open the back door as usual and the handle snapped. I tried to close the liftgate and it didn't latch. Had to tie the door shut. The next day I took it to the dealer and they replaced the latch and handle for appx 280. 00. A few weeks ago the handle snapped again, and now the door does not open. The dealer said I can have them replace it again. Why should I have to fork out more money. In my opinion this is a safety issue. All doors in a vehicle should work. Heaven forbid there was a crash and the only exit is the back door. Dealer is no help at all.

30 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/20/2008

The rear lift door on our 2002 Toyota Sequoia refused to open. As I attempted to open the door, it finally occurred to me that, if something happened to disable the battery and a fire were to start in the front half of the vehicle, the is no way to remove occupants from the rear of the vehicle or for the occupants to open the rear door from the inside. There is no physical mechanism for unlocking and opening the rear door without electricity being available to the door and the electrical part of the door latch mechanism working properly. Why have manufacturers of suvs been allowed to design automobiles that do not allow for an escape mechanism from the inside going out the rear door? this is a disaster waiting to happen (it probably already has happened during a wreck).

31 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 01/17/2008

My rear latch handle snapped and broke. I was unable to open the rear latch. I purchased the latch part at a local Toyota dealer for $72. 00. I found a link on the internet with step by step instructions for replacing the latch. Only took about a half hour.

32 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 07/17/2006

Rear door opener latch has broken twice in six years for no good reason. I have no way to open the rear door once this opener latch is broken. The last broken latch is available.

33 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 08/21/2005

Inside door handles have broken off on three of the doors. The only door that still works is the driver's side. I have to get out of the car and walk around opening everyone else's door so they can get out of the car. This is obviously not safe in the case of an accident, fire, etc where I might not be able to open all the doors in time. I am thoroughly disappointed by the design flaw that lead to this situation. Toyota wants over 200 per door to fix a problem that should never have happened. Anytime a passenger is trapped inside a car it can become a dangerous situation very quickly. The second problem that I have with the Sequoia involves the traction control system. It was fixed one time under a TSB, however, the problem has since returned. I do not feel like spending 100 for a diagnosis to tell me what I already know is wrong with the truck.

34 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 04/12/2005

The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated that the door handle broke off the inside of the vehicle, which prevented him from exiting the vehicle. Within a year, the remaining four door handles have broken, including the handle on the hatchback. The dealer stated that they were aware of the failure however; this was not included in the warranty. The contact submitted a complaint to the manufacturer. As of December 5, 2007, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle. The failure mileage was 20,000 and current mileage 35,000.

35 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 02/13/2004

The vsc light came on after my 2001 Sequoia hit a pot-hole. This was back in 2004 and the light remains on. I was told it was a sensor. The vehicle is long out of warranty and I can't afford any expenses right now. That's just one of a few major components to go. In 2003 the torque converter went and the transmission had to be replaced. I had 88,000 miles on it and it was beyond the 60,000 drive train warranty. However, Toyota did pay for half of the $4000 bill with the dealership picking up a 1/4 of the bill. I paid the rest. Was paying half an admission by Toyota that they provided a faulty transmission. I do know that the dealership removed the old transmission and shipped it off to Toyota and I never heard another word about it. The brakes on these big vehicles have been a sore spot with me. I've had to change brakes and rotors numerous times over the years. And last on my list of complaints is the tailgate. It has rusted out prematurely and it is more than a $1,000 to replace. I use bungies to keep it closed up and I had to prop the window up since the tracking system in the tailgate rusted out and fell apart.
