4 Traction Control Light On problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 12/17/2013

Vehicle had experienced intermittent stability/traction control trouble lights in cold weather. While driving in sub freezing weather on wet heavily salted nearly clear (possible slight slush from snow dusting) interstate along a straight smooth slight upgrade stretch, the vehicle without diver action (steering, braking, or acceleration) experienced a rear end swerve to the right and inability to control. Result was leaving the right side of the roadway down a 25-30 foot embankment (no guardrail) and a vehicle roll (one time, ending up wheels down, still running). Travel was at or below that of traffic. No other vehicles experienced difficulty on the same stretch of road. It is believed that a sudden random actuation of the stability/traction control system initiated the event. This appears to be a generic issue with the Toyota system spanning several models and years.

8 Traction Control Light On problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

Wife was pulling off from a stoplight when the traction control system light (skidding car icon) and warning buzzer came on and the vehicle started making a loud grinding sound, vibrating, and pulling to the right. She pulled the vehicle over, turned it off, and called me to come swap vehicles with her. When I started the car, of course, the symptoms had gone away. Several days later on a family trip, I was driving the vehicle on the interstate at 65-70 mph when the vehicle did the same thing she had described. We pulled over, the noise stopped, and then the vsc/trac and trac off came on. This should be a recall fix. Too many vehicles have had this problem, over several production years (2003's actually have a recall for a similar issue). However, reading various forums has made me think Toyota doesn't even know the root cause of this. But it's definitely a safety issue that needs to be checked out.

11 Traction Control Light On problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 06/10/2011

Anti-lock braking system engages suddenly with power loss and front end vibration. Vehicle stability control and traction control lights illuminate on dash. Abs and vsc lights remain on (abs and stability control therefore disengaged) and cannot be turned back on by operator. When vehicle is turned off, system appears to reset, but the problem repeats after restarting and driving several miles. Problem occurred twice today, on two separate drive events within a 2 our period.

12 Traction Control Light On problem of the 2004 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 06/08/2011

On four seperate occasions during low speed left turns my 2004 Toyota Sequoia has shuttered and struggled to stay on the road, traction control light comes on and beeps, and brake light eluminates. Vehicle also shutters when braking at low speeds. I took it to a Toyota dealership for service and was told the master cylinder needed to be replace. I took the vehicle to a certified mechanic to relace master cylinder, because of Toyota's high price to replace. The mechanic could not find any issue with the master cylinder and suggested it was an issue call a "low speed drop" and was probably related to the abs sytem or trac control. Called dealership and asked what type of diagnostics were performed and was told that they hook up a computer which produced a code related to the master cylinder. They could not explain why the computer gave them themaster cylinder code and did not offer to reinspect vehicle to determine actual cause.

13 Traction Control Light On problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 01/21/2011

2002 Toyota Sequoia vsc traction control. Problem is occurring more frequently and appears there are many other folks having this problem.

14 Traction Control Light On problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/20/2010

Driving on dry asphalt paving at 65 to 70 mph, traction control system light flashed and the vehicle brakes were abruptly applied to the right side for a matter of 2 to 3 seconds. This occurred 3 different times (twice November 20, 2010 and once November 27, 2010). Vsc and trac off lights would come on and would not turn off until vehicle engine was restarted. Also appears that trac off button does not work effectively to turn traction control system off on demand.

17 Traction Control Light On problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 08/20/2010

2002 Toyota Sequoia while driving at moderate speeds (40 - 50mph) abruptly pulls to the right, vsc traction lights come on, hear a grinding noise. After about 3 seconds the grinding noise stopped on 2 occasions and the pull to the right stops and seems fine. Vsc traction lights stay on. Dealer diagnosed the problem as the skid control computer or ecu - 650. 00 and the yaw rate sensor 401. 00. Has occurred 4 times in the last 2 weeks. There is a recall on the 2003 Sequoia electronic stability control system but not the 2002. There appear to be quite a few complaints about both of the parts that are mentioned above. Very dangerous driving situation when it occurs.

18 Traction Control Light On problem of the 2005 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 08/16/2010

A week after a 36000 mile service and not used for a week, when finally driven, minutes into the drive the emergency light and the traction dash lights came. When taken to dealer, was informed it was the brake booster and computer. I'm baffled this unit(s) would need replacing at 36 thousand miles. Not to mention that the first dealer's visit two wheel studs were placed due to rust. It's very disturbing not knowing what might happen next. The vehicle is used only for long distance trekking.

25 Traction Control Light On problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 07/03/2009

The skid and traction control system lights turn on for no reason and then the system is disabled all together. I spent a $1000 on it and it came back again. As an electrical engr with 30 years of experience, I am certain it is a marginal design and Toyota is wasting people's time and money.

26 Traction Control Light On problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 04/16/2009

The vehicle skid control/ traction control lights are on in my 2003 Toyota Sequoia sr5. When the car is started, these lights are off. When the car is put into drive and accelerated, a beeping noise occurs and the power is lost and there is a horrible grinding noise as if something is stuck in the transmission or brakes. When the car stops, the vsc trac and trac off lights come on and the car operates normally. This is very dangerous when trying to pull from a parking space into traffic. The car practically dies and oncoming cars may not be able to stop in time. I have to wait until the nearest car is quite far away before pulling out and this can take quite a while at high traffic times. I have read internet accounts of others with this same make and model and the same problem. Some have complained that they were almost in accidents when the problem occurred. Unfortunately , the only remedy seems to be to replace the vsc computer which can cost over $1500. Toyota has not seemed to cooperate with customers on this.

27 Traction Control Light On problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 05/12/2007

It's an unsettling feeling since it's my family vehicle and the lives of my loved ones are in this vehicle. I have taken it to be looked at and nothing has been found to be the problem. This is a huge safety issue and something needs to be done to resolve this issue before lives are lost!.

29 Traction Control Light On problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 12/15/1999

We own a 2002 Toyota Sequoia in which the vsc traction control lights have come on the dash along with the brake light and check engine light. The traction control has been unpredictable seemingly coming on and off in conditions when not necessarily needed. This has only been a problem within the last two/three months. Have taken it in to the dealership three times now and the code from the check engine light says that its an 02 sensor. I have been reassured by the dealership service department that replacing the 02 sensor will also reset and extinguish the vsc trac and brake lights that come on. This has not been the case. The lights stay off until I get the vehicle almost home then all the lights come back on again, the traction control remains unpredictable. I have listened to the dealership long enough and have spent approximately $800. 00 and still have the same problem. I have expressed my disbelief on how replacing 02 sensor ( twice now) can fix a problem with the vsc traction control but they have informed me that it takes care of it. It obviously hasn't. They now want me to bring the vehicle back in. After researching this problem online this seems to be a common and potentially dangerous problem with the 2002-2004 Sequoia's. The problem being with the vsc traction control. I am sure that if I bring it back now they will tell me that it needs a new traction control computer to the tune of $1700-$2400 and from reading what others have experienced this does not fix the problem. No one has been able to really find the source of the problem and how to fix it. I am normally not a complainer as I realize all mechanical parts wear out. However when researching this problem I was shocked to find the number of Sequoia owners who were able to describe in detail the exact same problem I am having. I feel that this is a big enough defect to require a recall.
