The rear window at driver side started to loose about 6 months ago. At the beginning, it made noise when open the rear window. So we kept it closed all the time. But gradually, it is getting worse and worse. Now even with the window closed, the window still shakes and makes noises, sounds like the window glass will drop at time.

I was out in the front porch near my garage around 7:30pm and my Sienna was parked inside the garage. Suddenly a loud noise like an explosion of sort occurred that scared me pretty bad that prompted me to look inside the garage and I was shocked to see two large holes simultaneously on either side (left and right) of the rear windshield and the glass was slowly caving out and then shattered completely in (not spider-web like) slowly falling away into the trunk. After coming back to my senses from the initial shock, I called my insurance company to see if they had heard of such freak incidents to which they said 'yes'. They did mention to go to the dealer and since it is still brand new (less than 9 months old), the glass will be replaced under manufacturer warranty. I went to[xxx] in arlington, TX from whom I had purchased the van along with their dealer warranty on top of the manufacturer warranty and after their service manager looked at the non-existent windshield with some of the glass still hanging on to the edges, he said he cannot make a judgment as to whether it was a manufacturer's defect or vandalism since there is no way to know as the glass is not in the windshield anymore (??!!!). I told them that if the glass shatters, it will not be intact and yet they would not buy my argument. I called Toyota corporate and they said unless the dealer makes the judgment, they cannot proceed with replacement of the windshield. I sincerely urge the NHTSA to inquire this incident since if it had occurred while driving, there would have been a serious risk of death or injury caused due to the sudden shock. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

I heard an extremely loud explosion sound coming from the roof of my 2011 Sienna just right after I got onto a highway and was traveling about 40mph. The surrounding was clear when it happened. I called the police who found out that the sunroof glass bulged up and shattered. The police couldn't find any signs of rocks hitting the sunroof and based on the glass breakage pattern suspected that the car's interior cabin pressure might have caused the sunroof glass to explode and break. However, the temperature at the time was only around 65'f, so it couldn't be due to heat. The police suspected the sunroof glass could be a defective part and asked me to follow up with a Toyota dealer.
While driving on interstate 4 orlando to tampa, florida going 65 mph the passenger side rear back window exploded without being struck by a foreign object. Luckily my 7 year old wasn't severely injured by the tiny glass fragments. So thankfull and or lucky we didn't crash our vehicle. Seems others having this problem with different Toyota models too. . . Fmkastner@yahoo. Com.
We recently had an issue with the pass. Side vent window on our 2004 Sienna. While driving the window was opened the glue failed and the window swung down the side of the van only being held on by the motorized arm. It appears as if the track that the window is attached to has been painted prior to the glue being applied. So instead of glass, glue, metal it was glass, glue, paint, metal. This seems to be a growing issue based on a quick search online. If the glass had broken free of the arm, it would have gone flying into traffic. The dealer and Toyota were contacted and both dismissed the issue.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that they were unaware of what caused the failure. The contact stated that the pedal seemed tight but she did not realize there was a failure with the pedal and engine throttle. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 33,000 and the current mileage was 35,000. Updated 1/19/2010

Recent when stopped at an indoor garage to park the car in the morning one of the rear side windows just spontaneously shattered. We didn't hit anything and there was no object throwing at the car. There ware 2 other persons in the garage witness what happened. This is obviously a manufacturing defect and safety issue. If there were person sitting at the seat next to the window the person could be hurt by the broken glass.

(1) the vehicle was in motion, in slow-moving, dense traffic on a highway. (2) without warning, the driver-side, rear passenger window suddenly shattered. The entire glass broke into mostly small pieces about 1 cm, most of which fell into the passenger cabin, on the floor and seats. A few big pieces up to 10 cm also fell in the cabin. The window was closed before it shattered. There was no collision with any vehicle. The driver and passenger did not witness anything that could have hit the window. There was no external damage to the rest of the vehicle. The vehicle had never suffered any collision or vandalism or impact prior to this incident. (3) the window will soon be repaired.

I bought a brand new 2006 Toyota Sienna van at fred anderson Toyota dealer in raleigh, nc June 06, 2006. Five weeks later, while our family is driving from the church in a Sunday morning, the glass window behind the driver exploded like a car bomb without being hit by anything. Luckily, nobody got hurt and I managed to stop the van to check out what happened. I got the van back to the dealer the day after and they fixed the van window. We expressed our concern on the safety of the glass window because two weeks before our incident, a friend of us who also bought a 2006 Toyota Sienna van , also got a similar incident while she drove her van to work. When we came to take the van back after the dealer fix the window, there was a lady who also came to the dealer office to fix her 2006 van broken window. Three incidents in the short period of time at a small place like here sound something seriously wrong with this van windows. We requested the dealer and the Toyota corporation to provide us with the statistics of the incidents related to the glass window. They said they do not have those statistic and ask us to find out with the NHTSA. We told them we do not feel safe to have our family (of 5 people) driving on this vehicle and not knowing when it will exploded again. We requested to return the vehicle and trade for another vehicle but the dealer said we have to work with the Toyota office for that. Their duties are to sell the vehicle and fix it if necessary. We contact Toyota and they asked us to fill out the arbitration paper to see if this vehicle can be returned. We are waiting for their decision. We want to file this complain to alert the public of a safety issue which we encountered and see if anybody have the same issue. If this is really a trend then Toyota should recall and fix the defect glass window. Imaging if you driving 70 miles on a freeway with the whole family and the window break like that, we can loose control and create a fatally accident.
Contact stated: driver's side window exploded in a thousand of pieces of glass with no apparent cause while driving 65-68 mph on freeway. Just driving along and the window exploded with no outside damage except the damage done by the glass. There were no external causes. Was checked by a state trooper. Dealer told consumer that this was rare, and had happened at the dealership once before. Confirmed that it was caused by stress on the glass. This was being fixed under warranty, and repainted the damaged parts.
Radiator ruptured and the engine overheated; hose replaced in steering column recall; rust protective tape recall; dvd screen replaced and the entire dvd player replaced(screen still not easily visible in middle row); passenger seat belt replaced; middle passenger seat belt failing; gasoline smell inside of car with ac on recirculation; driver's window fell inside door in snow storm and was not considered a safety issue to get a loaner vehicle even though the vehicle could not be locked; tires completely bald and leaking under 30,000 miles, dvd player must be at a high db volume and when returned to radio/cd will almost deafen you; interior lights have to be manually over ridden or will drain battery; car hesitates 1-2 seconds when trying to quickly accelerate and then lurches forward alarmingly; cruise control is not functioning; waiting to have fuel mixture sensor replaced. I was not informed of first 2 recalls until I my engine overheated. I did get the rust recall and a sticker on my sliding door informing user of danger of having middle windows open while opening the middle door could catch a head or other extremity. Toyota dealer service manager says mine is the only 04 Sienna experiencing any problems except for the recalls on the radiator; the steering hose; the rust tape; and the middle seat belt. Not so according to all I have read here. Most of the problems have occurred between 22,000 and 34,000 miles; the dvd screen always failed to lock into a good position for the middle row viewers.
While driving to florida noted that there were stains on both windshields either from a manufacturers defect or from the windshield washer solvent which appeared to be of gel consistency. When checked by the dealership I was told it was hard water stains but they were unable to remove the stains. When inspected by the manufacturers rep at the dealership he refused any aid. These stains present a safety hazard when driving at night and in bad weather. Nothing is being done to correct this problem. This is the third stage of the dispute process for me and Toyota is not acknowledging any responsibility for the problem that exists. This make very unsafe driving conditions especially on interstates like 95 when we head south for the winter.
Rear window shattered spontaneously without being struck by anything and without striking anything. This happened on a hot day, with windows closed and air conditioning on full. No apparent cause for window disintegrating identified.
Passenger side front window exploded. March 2003 the front window on the passenger side exploded sending glass flying throughout the car. Again in August 2003 the rear passenger side window on the driver side exploded. The cost of repair were over $400. 00, and the consumers believed that product was clearly a defect and the dealership should be responsible for paying for repairs.
