The vehicle made thumping / popping noise when turning steering - mostly turning left, but not exclusive to left turns. The sound was recognizable more during lower speeds, and less noticeable at higher speeds. This went on for a couple of months, and fearing safety issues and loss of steering, I got it fixed at the dealership. The dealership replaced the steering mid-shaft and had to perform the alignment at a cost of approx $650. It has been 3 weeks since, and the issue has not occurred again.

Visited the dealer to check the noise, tpms and vibratingsound when making turns and driving over 35 mph. Tech informed me that the front passenger side tire had bump and found that the steering rack and pinion sector is leaking from the passenger side boot and the steering has a knocking noise when turning the steering wheel. Miles 85k.

Car started making clunking noises when turning the steering wheel. Took it to a mechanic who test drove it and examined the steering. He validated the clunking noise and said he found the steering rack was broken at the mount and needs to be replaced to drive the car safely.

The vehicle is making clicking noise when wheels are turned and the vehicle is in low speeds forward and in reverse. It appears that the clicking noise comes from the steering system and/or wheels. The clicking sound is becoming louder and louder. Also, it appears that the wheels "jerk" slightly when turned left/right and in motion.
Clunking noise when turning steering left to right and vice versa. Steering intermediate shaft issue is a well-known problem.
Toyota Sienna 2004 with only 62,000 miles presents knocking noise when operating the steering wheel, also requiring excessive correction when driving the vehicle in highways. Requested fix during extended warranty sold by Toyota itself. Claim was denied.

Since, I've bought this van in late 2009, I have always felt a clicking noise in the steering wheel during turning. Now that the noise is getting worse, I am reading online that there's some kind of manufacturing defect and TSB's issued about the intermediate steering shaft as corrosion sets in those with time. Also, it seems like that oil from steering rack is leaking and that seems to be a problem with multiple Toyota Siennas starting from 2006. Toyota should take responsibility for these manufacturing defects and correct the issues as these can lead to steering failure & can be fatal.

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Sienna. The contact noticed that the vehicle made a noise when she turned the ignition on, off and when she opened and closed the electronic windows. She also noticed a noise when turning the steering wheel with much resistance. The contact has experienced the failures since January 2008. The dealer told her that they could find nothing wrong. She had not called the manufacturer to-date. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The current mileage is approximately 32219. The failure mileage was approximately 15,000. Problem with steering system in 2004 Toyota Sienna. Noise in steering. Toyota repair shop indicated steering intermediate needs to be replaced because it was bad. I believe steering system is a manufacturing defect.
"clunking" noise noted on steering the 2004 Toyota Sienna just a few months after it was bought. It had gone through 3 recalls already when first the fuel tank, then the door sills, then the middle row seatbelt bezel, and finally recently, the rear hatch struts were all replaced. Vehicle was test driven, but no mention of "clunking" documented. However, all this time, the clunking had become more noticeable, and vehicle had gone through 2 alignments already, with only about 42,000 miles on it. Last serviced for alignment, dealer did note clunking and recommended replacement of intermediate steering shaft. It is now becoming more difficult to steer the vehicle, especially at low speeds, and "k-turns" now require more maneuvers, and the steering radius has increased potentially causing collisions with objects or pedestrians if compensatory action is not initiated. (steering output has sometimes been unpredictable). Second component is lack of tpms sensors when tires were changed at a facility, and I had the facility document the lack of sensors.
