2008 Toyota Sienna. Driving down steep right turns, vsc light comes on, urgent beeping alarm and tires grip and grip vehicle brakes going 20-30+ mph on dry road. Very scary and dangerous, and has continues repeatedly over the past year on curvy right turns. Local mechanics don't know what is wrong with the vehicle. 38 Steering problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/03/2021

Numerous times (too many to say), the traction control indicator sensor comes on & I am unable to control the car. Typically it lasts for 2-3 minutes and turns off. It does not depend on road conditions, weather, and or speed. I have taken the car to the repair shop and they have not been able to capture anything on the engine diagnostic system. No codes were found for them to troubleshoot this issue. I've seen this problem being reported on several posts. Yet the nhsta has done nothing!! Toyota needs to be held liable for this issue. Wake up nhsta. Make our tax dollars work!!! this poses a huge risk to my family and other drivers, not to mention impact on budget.

41 Steering problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/13/2021

When cornering the vans stability control activated without warning and modulates the abs brakes and beeps and becomes very unstable. My wife and I have both experienced this and fear it will cause a car accident. It is not happening all the time but makes me worry every time we drive a windy road. We had the Toyota zero point calibration done, have replaced wheel bearings and done an alignment which have not changed it at all. It typically happens on curvy roads between 25 and 65 mph.

42 Steering problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 11/20/2020

Abs some times activates when driving a light curve road at speed around 30-40 mph. Usually a steering wheel is about 2 or 10 o'clock positions. At the time vsc indicator flashes and warning alarm goes off. This causes a sudden breaking and it becomes very difficult to control the car.

43 Steering problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 11/08/2020

The vsc system is enabling while driving and making a turn on an otherwise normal road. When it enables, it applies the brake and sounds a repeating alarm. The system applies the brake while I am attempting to make a turn, and this makes me feel unsafe, as if I have temporarily lost control of the vehicle while making an otherwise benign maneuver. The repeating alarm does not turn off until I have turned the wheel to the opposite direction from the initial turn angle. This means if the turn is slow, the alarm will sound for the entire distance of the turn.

44 Steering problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 11/07/2020

Traction control warning sounds and vehicle auto brakes - hard. Conditions were clear. Often this happens while the van is in a curve. Speeds vary from 30s to 70s (on the interstate). This creates a very unsafe situation.

45 Steering problem of the 2008 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/23/2020

The vehicle stability control will unexpectedly engage in instances where it shouldn't activate. The most common is a long, slight curve on at freeway speeds on dry pavement. The second most common scenario is accelerating to enter the freeway. When vsc engages, the vehicle will lurch to the side it was activated on and curtail any acceleration. This makes the vehicle hard to control when on a freeway curve and when attempting to accelerate to merge onto the freeway, causing unexpected motion that is a hazard to remaining on the road or causing the vehicle to be in an accident with other vehicles. There is no indication that there are malfunctions in any system that would cause this to occur. Note: mileage on the odometer is ~170,000 miles.

46 Steering problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/10/2020

Traction control and abs activated on dry roads acting like the vehicle thought it was going into a slide/skid. This could have caused a serious crash! ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly; 2 - VIN corrected, error in one position; 14 - unable to provide information for all the characters in the VIN. #vpic#.

47 Steering problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 08/16/2020

We bought this car about 1 1/2 years ago. After having it for a bit we learned of the problem. You will be driving down the road (dry, sunny day) and all of a sudden the car will start beeping, the traction control will kick in and start pressure braking the car. The car thinks it pulling you out of a skid, so you have to strongly hold the steering wheel. It's terrifying! I feel like the car is going to pull me off the road. I won't drive the car in rain because of this and honestly don't feel comfortable even driving it most the time. You never know when it is going to happen and it typically happens while you are driving high speeds on the highway. This is a known problem with Toyota - they have a technical service bulletin br008-04 (abs& traction control intermediate vsc system), which shows they have replaced the defective part. However since the car is old, they won't replace it anymore. It is the companies defect part! how many people have gotten into accidents and/ or died from this? and just to say it - the 2004 version doesn't have a way to manually just turn off the traction control. We have tried everything! I took it to a Toyota dealership and they agreed this is what is wrong with the car, but said they won't fix it for free - they wanted $800. I contacted Toyota customer and they basically told me they don't care if people die from this, because the car is old and they don't have any responsibility after a certain age of the car. We have 3 kids and this is not an acceptable answer! my whole family has Toyota vehicles and if they don't make things like this right, we will not be anymore! the car is new to us and is frankly unsafe. This is Toyota's faulty part. I have seen several message boards with the same issue. How can a deadly issue expire?.

48 Steering problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 06/07/2020

Driving at 50 mph on a two lane highway the car suddenly veered to the right and decelerated/braked hard, under it's own control, not mine.

49 Steering problem of the 2013 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 04/06/2020

Starting about two years ago, the traction/abs lights come on between 20-35 mph on a gradual curve or randomly while driving. The brakes come on, like an abs event, even though the brakes are not applied. The car will jerk to the right or left and chatters/vibrates. The mechanic said the brakes, tire wear and pressure, and suspension are all in very good condition and there are not traction control or abs codes. This does not appear to be normal wear and is dangerous. We can only drive it on short trips for fear of getting in an accident. I decided to look online and found that hundreds of Toyota owners are experiencing the same symptoms. . Read more...

50 Steering problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/01/2020

About a year ago the slip indicator light (car with swervy lines) started coming on intermittently and without warning while turning on highways or roads in dry conditions without any risk of tires slipping. The abs activates without warning and the vehicle slows down on its own. The situation is very dangerous. No known fix from Toyota.

51 Steering problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/21/2020

A couple of years ago, my 2005 Sienna's vsc warning lights, alarms and braking would come on while going around turns. My car had new tires, wheels were balanced and aligned. It's scary and dangerous when the brakes engage. I'm not going around sharp turns at high rates of speed. Dozens of other people have exactly the same experience, and when the brakes engage, it yanks the car hard, and has almost caused accidents to me and others. This happens to me on a regular basis. The only way to avoid it is to slow down to less than 40mph on some turns, which is dangerous when the speed limit is 65. Here's a link to the many other people's experience with this exact same thing. This is a liability and Toyota really needs to take action here. . Read more...

52 Steering problem of the 2011 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/15/2020

2011 Toyota Sienna, front suspension making noises and clicking. Air conditioning not working when car is idling. Rear backing camera does not work only in the night time. . And it has been at the multiple Toyota dealerships and they can. Not figure it out.

53 Steering problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/14/2020

Electronic anti-sway override kicks in for no apparent reason at highway speeds. Usually when taking slight banks or turns over 35 mph.

54 Steering problem of the 2016 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/21/2019

The steering seized up on my 2016 Toyota van while stopped at a traffic light. I had to get the vehicle towed. There are only 20904 miles on the odometer. Toyota says my warranty is expired. Toyota says I will need a new steering assembly, which I will have to pay is for $3200.

55 Steering problem of the 2008 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/10/2019

While driving on a slope, incline or decline, my traction control light ( car with squiggles behind it) comes on, a loud beep beep beep sounds, and my car brakes on its own. Always happens while in motion. Highway driving. 90 percent of the time while on an incline or decline. It scares the heck out of you causing an unsafe condition. Additionally, when the brakes apply, it pulls you out of your lane. The first occurrence was 3 weeks ago. Has happened multiple times since. It doesn't seem to be intermittent anymore. You can count on it happening when your on a slope.

56 Steering problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/06/2019

When driving the speed limit, going downhill, uphill, straight, around a curve, in the rain or dry weather, the vsc and slip/trac lights up, the abs system is activated / brakes engage. I loose complete control of the van. I can no longer steer or break. The breaks engage, but it causes the car to veer to the right. I have taken the car to the mechanic 5 times now and no codes show, even after he is able to the vehicle to repeat this behavior. It seems to happen a lot on off/on ramps. It happens mostly on highways, but it has happened on two lane roads. The vehicle is completely dangerous to drive. It has almost caused several accidents. I have replaced the yaw sensors and had several alignments and this still happens. After a lot of research, we have found that this is actually really common in Toyota Sienna. People are saying that the bushings in the rack in pinion wear out and the entire rack and pinion system needs to be replaced. Some people have replaced the rack and pinion and claim that there is still a problem. But the majority say after the rack and pinion is replaced there is not further problems.

57 Steering problem of the 2010 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/01/2019

When making turns at speeds higher than 30 mph sometimes on the freeway or especially when driving up a hill, the slip indicator light, vsc light and alarm sounds and occasionally will automatically activate the abs braking system (even while you're still pressing on the accelerator) which causes you to lose control of the vehicle temporarily. The abs activation does not happen every time, but when it happens, it is very scary. There are many people online complaining of the same exact issue and Toyota cannot find the problem. One person stated the problem went away once he replaced the entire rack.

58 Steering problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 09/08/2019

When driving at any speed above 25 mph, the traction control light on the dashboard will come on, it will beep and the brake will engage without the driver pressing the brake pedal (these all happen at the same time). This in turn locks the brakes at times and the car veers to the right. There is no reason that we can figure out that this happens. It has happened many times and three days ago, it happened twice in one day. We have taken our vehicle to hendrick Toyota in wilmington nc and provided them a video where two owners took videos each time it happened in their vehicle. I also provided them with email discussions from two different web sites where owners were discussing the issue. We believe this should be a recall for Toyotas.

59 Steering problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/29/2019

When driving in dry conditions at various speeds over 25 mph, the vsc warning light comes on, an alarm sounds and the antilock brakes engage for no reason. This is a terrifying and extremely dangerous issue that is well documented by so many Toyota Sienna owners but to date has not been addressed or acknowledged by Toyota. When taken to a dealership, they claim (as other owners have also stated) that they cannot replicate the problem and it does not register through the obd2 sensor so there is no record of it happening. With as many people as this is happening with, it is not a question of whether there will be accidents, injuries and ultimately deaths caused by this issue. The only question is when and how many have to occur before Toyota acknowledges this is a problem. Driving down the road, in traffic at 65 miles an hour when for no reason, the car slams on the brakes without warning. It is happening all the time at this point making the car completely unsafe to drive for the owner, the vehicle's occupants and any unsuspecting vehicle in the vicinity. I am begging you. Please get Toyota to issue a recall before tragedy strikes. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. I am submitting the date below as today's date as the car is now sitting in my driveway until I can figure out what needs to be done. It has happened over the past 6 months every time I drive it and the $750 steering position sensor that Toyota replaced did nothing to address the problem.

60 Steering problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/24/2019

While my vehicle is in motion on city streets and highways at speeds between 35 and 55 mph, on a straightaway and curve, the stability control light/and alarm comes on randomly. Sometimes it's just the alarm that sounds, and sometimes the alarm sounds and the brakes activate and the minivan swerves. Was the most frightening and dangerous experience ever with my young grandchildren riding with me. I actually had to pull over to the side of the road to calm myself. This has now happened on several occasions with today (7-24-19) being the latest experience.

61 Steering problem of the 2013 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/11/2019

Our van has 93,800 miles on it and is making a grinding noise when we turn left and right while moving at slower speeds. We took the van in and were told that the struts need replaced and it was unsafe to drive. This is low miles for this vehicle and would be still under warranty if it was not older than 5 years. This should not need a repair like this already. Many other people have had the same complaints on his forum at about the same mileage. Toyota prides itself on making vehicles to last but have made several mistakes on this model. Cost to fix it is $750. I believe this issue should be looked into along with the reason our van has been going through tires about every 25,000 miles.

62 Steering problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/08/2019

Tl- the contact owns 2006 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that while exiting an dependent mechanic lot, while depressing the accelerator pedal, the steering wheel seized, the brake pedal failed, the vehicle started to spin around at least four times to the left, crashing in twice to a park vehicle while spinning. The contact quickly powered off the engine to stop the vehicle from spinning. The contact waited one hour before the vehicle was restarted and the driver was able to drive the vehicle to the contact residence. The contact stated that she was in shock and was not aware of any warning indicator lights illuminated. The contact sustained foot, right hips and back injuries, the front passenger also sustained back injuries and both required medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer and was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000. Aw.

64 Steering problem of the 2017 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/29/2019

Driver was in the process of picking up foster children to transport them to their visit when the driver noticed smoke coming from the steering wheel and immediately turned off the engine to the vehicle. Because of the smoke the driver was concerned and canceled the visit and notified the agency director (me) who advised him to return to town and drop off the van at Toyota of olympia. As soon as I got back into town I went to the dealership and they advised me that after a half hour of diagnostics it was discovered the radio was not working and the fuse was blown. They advised me that putting in another fuse would just cause it to just trip or blow out. Requested they continue the diagnostics on the vehicle and let me know what caused the problem. I was advised diagnostics would be held at no more than $250. 00 but we will see when I go to pick the van up and park it in the yard. Please see the text message screenshot attached that explains the question of the smoke the driver saw per the service department contact. The radio apparently grounded out and shorted thus the smoke. Had my driver not stopped the vehicle and shut off the van what would have happened or worse - what if the driver had not noticed the smoke coming from the vehicle in the first place. Would the van have burst into flames if the driver had not seen the smoke and kept driving. We have had the van less than two years and it is having serious issues. We just had to replace the windshield wiper motor because it froze in mid motion just a couple of weeks ago. Something is not right with this vehicle and very unsafe. Someone needs to look into this issue. Also they can't do anything more until they replace the radio but all wiring in the steering wheel is okay and the cost to replace the radio is 4109. 00 plus the tax.

65 Steering problem of the 2013 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/14/2019

I was gonna make a u-turn at the end of the road and then the steering made a cracking noise. The steering shaft has been replaced 3 times and it still happens. So much for Toyota reliability. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

66 Steering problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 04/15/2019

Check engine light, vsc light, traction control light. All 3 lights came on at same time. They say it's the gas cap, it's not the gas cap, they say to reset it, that doesn't work. I was driving home, nothing happened, the lights just came on. No warning sound, nothing to indicate there was a problem, my car seems to drive just fine, but the lights won't go off, and I have 3 kids that I take and pick up from school.

67 Steering problem of the 2008 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 04/01/2019

The traction control, stability, and abs engage in turns (steering input) ranging from speeds of 25-55 mph. It happens on flat surfaces, inclines and declines. The turn range from sharp turns to slight turns that there is no reduction of speed to navigate the turn. When it occurs the vehicle rapidly decelerates and pulls to the right. When trying to accelerate in a turn the vehicle will not accelerate until there is no steering input. Dealers and mechanics can not determine the cause. It has been occurring daily for about 6 months. This has caused many near crashes.

68 Steering problem of the 2014 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/11/2019

I took my Toyota Sienna van to Toyota of pharr to have my passenger air bag replace due to a recall. I made a schedule appointment on and it was completed, however, service person informed me that I needed to have my control arm replaced as well. He stated it it wasn't under warranty and no recall on it. The cost to have it done is $2,381. 07. I asked him how did this happened. He stated it's the driving condition and miles. I told him my wife is retired and hardly drives it and only drives it on pave road. Also, it only has 70,000 miles. I told gentleman that that was too much money. I asked him if it's safe to drive and said yes. Do, I brought it home. My wife and I are still paying for our vehicle and how can this happen? can you please check if there is a recall on this part? if not, can Toyota pay for it or at least most of it ? we've purchased vehicles from Toyota from the past for many many years. . . . Please help us out. Thank you.

When at low speeds, turning left or right. . . There is a clunking sound. Forums suggest that the issue is either the intermediate steering linkage. If this fails will it cause lock up or loss of steering? this should be looked into. So far, I have had only this 'clunking' sound.
