5 Wheel Bolts problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/23/2004

Left rear wheel stud broke when torqued to 85 ft. Lb. Torque specs is 76 ftlb as mentioned in the owners manual; and if one stud can fracture at 85 ftlb, it is possible that the others have gone into yield zone, too. This is a very poor design and a safety risk. Design should be robust to handle DC nut runner, pneumatic drives, and manual drivers; which this stud was not capable to handle.

6 Wheel Bolts problem of the 2002 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/26/2003

After a blowout on my left front tire on my 2002 Toyota Sienna xle, I discovered that the lug nuts designed for the aluminum wheels do not fit the steel wheel of the full size spare, and Toyota does not provide the "acorn" type lug nuts for the spare. The lug nuts for the aluminum wheels do not seat properly against the steel wheel spare. I believe that not providing the proper lug nuts for the spare is a serious omission on Toyota's part and makes driving with the spare with the improper lug nuts very dangerous.

7 Wheel Bolts problem of the 2000 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/13/2002

Two times I rotated the tires and the lug nuts cracked in two. Some fill real spoungy. I went to Toyota dealer but the would not replace them, the said they were tighted to much. In 25 years working on cars I never seen lug nuts break. So I purchase new one and right away I new they were better. So I showed them to the service manager, he still said there is no problems. I said there must be, the new ones are better (more theads, wt. More, & better steel ) also two lug nuts broke taking them off.

10 Wheel Bolts problem of the 2000 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/16/2001

VIN 4t3zf13cxyu318393. Electrically operated sliding door opens and cannot be closed. Dealer and importer do not think they are responsible for this safety defect (out of warranty). My daughter's Sienna, VIN 4t3zf13c8zu471006, which is a year younger has the identical problem, so does one of her friend's Sienna. I don't have that vehicle's VIN but I could get it. Toyota claims : no safety issue, defects are coincidental. Right!!! their investigators should take probability 101 at their local community college. To top it all, the repair costs $750. What an insult! before I forget; my Sienna had two wheel mounting studs shear off. I torque the nuts myself with a torque wrench set at 85 lb/ft. I suppose this is not a safety defect either since there are five studs holding the wheel. Since the importer is not concerned, perhaps they will be when you add this information to your database.

11 Wheel Bolts problem of the 2000 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 09/03/2001

1 wheel bolt severed while trying to remove lugs: nuts. 1 wheel bolt severed while tightening lug nut. Both bolts failed on the same day and were being worked on by different people.

12 Wheel Bolts problem of the 2000 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/28/2000

3 out of 5 lugs on one wheel sheared off when replacing tire. Mechanic claims to have used torque wrench set well below factory specs. Not clear whether lugs are defective or mechanic over-torqued. Lug nuts are designed for mag wheels but spare is not a mag. Appears possible that using these nuts on a standard wheel results in nuts being swaged onto the lugs such that they subsequently fail. Meachanic reports that this happens about once a month on this vehicle and much more frequently on similarly designed isuzu lug nut.

13 Wheel Bolts problem of the 1998 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/24/2000

At all times when applying brakes they would make a high pitch/grinding noise. Did not affect stopping. Took vehicle to dealer, and was informed that entire braking needed to be replaced. Consumer was also informed that replacement parts are defectively designed, consumer stated that the backing plate is too thin and defective. Left front rear wheel lug nut was cross threaded. Knocking noise from the right front when going over bumps, dealer replaced strut mounts.
