1 Body problem of the 1998 Toyota T100

Failure Date: 09/14/2022

Took my truck to a body shop to have dings and a few rusted spots on it repaired. The business owner and repair person put it on the rack and after examination, informed me that it was not worth the repairs, because the frame and undercarriage was too extensive and might as such cause safety issues. I chose not to have it repaired because of this issue.

I am a owner of a 1996 Toyota T100 with serious rust issues on my truck. I have been looking online and found that other owners have the same problems. There was a recall on other truck such as the tacoma. Why hasn't a recall been issued for the T100.

5 Body problem of the 1998 Toyota T100

Failure Date: 06/25/2015

I have a 1998 Toyota T100 with 143k miles on it. The frame is now broke under the bed near the front leaf spring shackle, beside a bed mount. The other side is also cracked bad and is about to break. I also noticed the cross-member that the carrier bearing attaches too is also cracked on one side and all but cracked on the other side. I called Toyota because I know they are doing the tacomas around the same year as well as the tundras. Toyota said that there is no recall or anything they can do. I know this is an issue with several other T100s and am very upset that they wont do anything with the T100s.

Failure Date: 07/20/2013

I was returning from a short trip and the driver's side control arm broke while traveling down the road at approx. 35 mph. The frame, body and steering components are all riddled with rust. I have replaced numerous parts that had failed due to rust, including a fuel pump whose design trapped moisture and road salt on top of the fuel tank until fuel was leaking on the roadway. The rear bumper rusted off. Toyota trucks of similar type and year have been recalled because of similar problems, but not the 1996 T100. Toyota forums are filled with the same issue with this vehicle. I have owned this vehicle since it was brand new. Toyota will not back this product.

12 Body problem of the 1997 Toyota T100

Failure Date: 01/14/2012

Additional information regarding claim no. 10451047. In reviewing claim I realized the safety issues not fully covered. A serious incident occurred while using this vehicle. While bringing bagged leaves to town recycling area, a bag fell from the truck. My son and I stopped in the road to retrieve the debris behind the truck. While retrieving the debris the vehicle began backing up and almost struck us. I had to run to the drivers door and enter the moving vehicle to apply the brake to prevent a crash. It became apparent that when placed in park the shifter may in fact be in reverse. This allows the vehicle to move unexpectedly. Unfortunately this can not be easily repaired as failure of the frame was identified as the cause for loss of the shifter support. This serious defect can be expected to produce this type of dangerous situation of the vehicle being inadvertently in reverse instead of in park!.

14 Body problem of the 1996 Toyota T100

Failure Date: 10/26/2011

I had my vehicle in for an exhaust rattle as well as an oil change today to my local independent mechanic. The mechanic, noting how rotted out the frame was in the rear as well as front, recommended that I not drive the vehicle any longer. The shop didn't do any service work due to the condition of the vehicle. Knowing that Toyota did a recall on a similar truck model of the same vintage, I took the truck to the nearby Toyota dealer where I asked their service department to do an assessment of the vehicle. I thought Toyota could then better understand what is happening with one of their products. The service manager was rather rude and said the warranty on the truck had expired after three years and that if I wanted an inspection, I would have to pay for it. I am shocked that what I had thought was a perfectly good usable vehicle has now become a safety hazard to myself and others on the road. I'm familiar with rusty vehicles having lived in wisconsin now for 47 years, but I have never seen this kind of thing before. I feel Toyota should either replace the frame or buy out the vehicle from me. Toyota advertises as to the percentage of their vehicles are still on the road with some kind of pride; perhaps they should acknowledge at the same time how many people are putting their lives at risk by driving those vehicles. As to the rotted frame, both main rails are rotted in the back. The front left tire suspension has rusted through. The rear transaxle has rusted near the rear right tire and is leaking fluid. Brake lines have rusted through and are leaking. Spark plug? that attaches to the exhaust pipe (reburn system?); both nuts holding this on have disintegrated and no longer holding this device tight (this is the cause of the newly discovered exhaust rattle).
