Failure Date: 10/15/2014

The catalytic converter shield on my 2005 Tacoma fell off while driving and almost caused an accident. After picking up the large metal parts and inspecting under the vehicle, I noticed that near to where the catalytic converter sits, that there was extensive corrosion on the truck's frame and even a large hole. I am extremely worried about the safety of the vehicle and am afraid that the frame may crumple while driving causing an accident or death. Toyota is aware of the issue. I contacted the corporate offices, but was told that Toyota is only replacing the frame on vehicles registered in what they have designated as a "snow state". I purchased my Toyota at a dealership in illinois (a "snow state") and have done a lot of travelling within the "snow states", yet because I live 25 miles away on the missouri side, Toyota is refusing to cover the repair. The woman from Toyota corporate did not seem to care when I told her that I was worried about the safety of the vehicle and that it could result in an accident or death. I offered to email the photos of the frame corrosion, but was rejected. Toyota needs to cover this repair on all vehicles with frame corrosion regardless of the state they live in.

On my old 1998 Toyota Tacoma I got the deal on buyback when the frame rusted out so bad with holes in it. Then I went out and bought a 2005 Toyota Tacoma and this truck has rust from end to end on the frame again. When I bought it in 2006 Toyota said they had that fixed but this 2005 is alot worse with alot more rust then the 1998. I also took it to the garage to have the power steering pump and alternator and ac pump replaced because everything was rusted up on the alternator and ac pump and power steering so bad the mechanic told me to keep the parts and show the Toyota dealership and NHTSA. I was lucky that everything shut down on the truck when I got it to the bottom of my driveway and then got it towed to the mechanic and 1790. 00 dollars later with labor and parts let me tell you not happy with Toyota. Please NHTSA look at this problem and if you need a truck to take pics of mine is the one I used to work at a body shop so I know this truck would do the job for NHTSA my truck has 78000 miles on it I will take pics of it for you if you wish.

38 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2014

On the inside of the left frame rail, inside of where the forward cab mount is located, the frame has completely rusted through. Unusual because the rest of the frame from front to back is clean.

39 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2014

I received the recall from Toyota regarding the re-coating for Toyota Tacoma frames due to corrosion from high salt use areas. I received a call today from my Toyota dealer that there was a hole rusted through my frame but Toyota would replace the frame and it is still safe to drive. I would, however, be financially responsible for anything that Toyota feels they don't want to pay for during the "re-framing". I'm concerned about the hole in my frame and it's structural integrity in case of an accident, second. . . Why should have I have to pay for a mistake that Toyota made, everything should be covered.

40 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/25/2014

During PA state inspection frame is totally rusted and failed. Holes in frame by engine but entire frame is rusted. Thought it was just surface rust but not that lucky. Only 47775 miles.

41 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2014

I took my 2005 Toyota Tacoma access cab 4x4 in for service when I was told by the that I had two rust holes in my frame near the front suspension on both sides. One is approximately 1 inch round on the passenger side, the other is approx. 4 inches round on the drivers side. I have had the truck maintained by the same dealership since we bought the truck. I have noticed that the last several years none of the work I have had done and that includes asking how the frame is doing as Toyota has a history of rust issues with these trucks. I contacted Toyota and opened a case with them. They did come out with a limited service campaign (lsc - e0d to address this known rust issue for certain truck in 20 northern states. After following up, I was told yes Toyota knows I have the issue but my VIN isn't part of the lsc. I was told to contact a dealership and the frame could be fixed as long as I paid for it. I have contacted several local Toyota dealerships and they all tell me they don't fix frames with this issue. The truck only has 72k on it and it has never been driven on the beach or taken off road. I use the truck to get to work in snow storms and weekend projects. I always get the truck washed as I know how bad salt can damage a vehicle. I find it amazing that there is a lsc but Toyota is unable to tell me how many vehicles are being fixed under it and they are also unwilling to assist in getting the issue fixed or that referring me to local dealerships isn't helping at all since they don't fix this issue. . I also find it suspect that up until a few years ago all of my maintenance work was copied to my Toyota account but nothing for the last three years. I have my receipts but again it makes no difference to Toyota. If nothing else I am going on record as I have searched several websites dedicated to 2005 - 2008 Tacoma trucks and this is a very heavily reported issue.

42 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2014

Toyota has received reports that certain 2005-2008 model year Tacoma vehicles operated in specific cold climate areas (cold climate states) with high road salt usage may exhibit more-than-normal corrosion to the vehicle's frame. Toyota investigated these reports and determined that the frames in some vehicles may not have corrosion-resistant protection sufficient for use in these areas. This combined with prologed exposure to road salts and other environmental factors, may contribute to the development of more-than-normal rust in the frame of some vehicles. This condition is unrelated to and separate from normal surface rust which is commonly found on metallic surfaces aftr some years of usage and/or exposure to the environment. Toyota has issued a limited service campaign, but only in selected states. My VIN# falls within the range on the limited service campaign, but my state is tbd according to Toyota. My complaint is that Toyota is aware of this safety issue and is refusing to repair my vehicle. My truck will not pass inspection due to this safety issue and is currently sitting unlicensed.

43 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2014

Vehicle was in for state inspection and found to have holes rusted in frame which would not pass inspection. Contacted Toyota customer service was told at the present time there is no recall in my area which is pennsylvania. I was told that the boston area has a recall on 2005 to 2008 for my vehicle. I do not understand why my vehicle would not be covered under that recall I need help. The vehicle is in excellent condition other than the frame.

44 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2014

After repair of 2 recalls-spiral cable and seat belt, a whining noise started after starting the engine. The whine gets louder as during acceleration. The whine was not there before the repair of the two recalls.

45 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2014

Performing an inspection on the chassis of my 2005 Toyota Tacoma and discovered rusted holes in the frame (one on each frame rail) just behind the front suspension large enough to put my hand through. Toyota has issued a limited service campaign e0d to coat or replaced rotted frames (released 5/4/14) but since I am a resident of the state on maryland and the campaign has not been released in my area yet they will not do anything to resolve my safety issue. My local dealership has been helpful and made temporary repairs to my frame. I have an open case with Toyota but they tell me there is nothing they can do until the lsc e0d is released in my area.

46 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/27/2014

On may 27th 2014 I took my truck to be inspected to find out that the frame has a hole created by rust on the on the drivers side of the truck. I contacted Toyota to find out there is no recall available and that there has been recalls in the past for older year models of the Toyota trucks. I feel when I was talking with Toyota they weren't willing to take any part in helping me with my problems and I feel it is a production error. Thank you.

47 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2014

I recently purchased a 2005 Toyota Tacoma trd sport double cab and discovered it had severe and dangerous frame rust. It has a hole rusted through the frame in the front and large rust flakes are falling off in other various places. Upon doing research, I found out about the massive recalls regarding frame rust on Toyota trucks. I spoke with Toyota and they said the frame would be replaced if it were currently registered in a cold climate state. I am trying to get them to email me that statement so I can have it for my records. The truck came from a cold climate state. It is currently registered in north carolina. They said they won't help me only because it is in nc, no matter how dangerous the rust. Is that legal for them exclude me for that reason? I have pictures to prove that my frame is just as bad as the trucks being repaired. It is definitely a safety concern because it is not a matter of if, but when the frame breaks. Thanks for your help.

48 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2014

Frame rust noticed while conducting routine maintenance on truck. The whole frame is not rusted but there is a large whole just behind the drivers side tire near the catalytic converter.

49 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2014

Western pennsylvania vehicle, failed inspection due to a hole in the frame. Significant amount of rust on the entire frame area. A pinhole was discovered and the vehicle was denied a passing inspection. Was suggested that I take it to a frame welding specialist to have it welded. Toyota needs to get it together. There are more trucks like this out there, they have already replaced earlier year frames due to the same issues.

50 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2014

I had this vehicle inspected by Toyota and they stated surface rust on frame. This vehicle only has 47000 miles and the rust is not surface rust, in my opinion, for the mileage. The vehicle will continue to deteriorate if Toyota doesn't do something about repairing or replacing the frame. Toyota has recalled 1995. 5 through 2004 and have repaired or replaced frames. Toyota needs to continue their recall to include later vehicles with rusting problems. If Toyota does not step up to correct this rusting problem it will, if it hasn't already become a national safety problem.

51 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2014

I took my truck to get it inspected and they said there are holes in the frame a large as my hand. It will not pass inspection and cannot be driven. I have been driving my 2 little sons around in this vehicle which has been unsafe for a long time. The holes are big enough to have started years ago as a small hole which make the truck undrivable. I have a nice looking truck that cannot be driven. The 1st generation Tacomas were recalled for this same reason. What is Toyota going to do?.

52 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2014

Vehicle at repair shop to be inspected and failed due to rust perforation of frame. Brought it to dealer and they took pictures and sent to Toyota and still waiting. They stated up to 2004 year models were recalled for same problem but not the 2005 year models which makes no sense as 2005 is a newer model. The dealer stated that they are doing recalls in the boston area for this problem and it should come to NY soon. However, this makes no sense as recalls are nationwide and not area specific. This is a safety issue and we would like this fixed at Toyota's expense. We did have the car undercoated and rust proofed when we bought the car.

53 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2013

It was clear and dry on the day of the accident. The hov lane was dry and newly paved. I was traveling approximately 65-60 mpg when I saw brake lights. I began to decelerate and step on the brakes at about 300 feet. Suddenly, I noticed that the vehicle in front of me was not stopping, but rather that it had already stopped! at approximately 200 feet away from the car, I pressed my brake petal to the floor. At 20 feet behind him, I said to myself that my vehicle had enough room to stop before hitting him. But something happened at this point. It felt like someone was pushing my vehicle from the back (it was not being pushed), or the vehicle accelerated, or that the abs system released the pressure on the brakes. The result was that I rear-ended the vehicle. Although our airbags deployed, neither I nor my passenger had contact with the airbags. I was probably going less than 15 mph at impact. When braking, I never felt the tattle-tell feeling of a pulsating brake pedal when the abs system goes into effect. I have had problems with the abs system in the past when driving in 4-wheel drive in snow and driving off road. The abs system would take the braking control away from me, which has caused some problems. This happened in 2009 (off road) and 2010 in deep snow. I took the vehicle to the dealership to examine my braking and abs system. They could not find any problems. If the abs is at fault, this would be the first time since 2010 and the first time on dry road. The specifications for my vehicle say that it only takes 126 feet to make a stop. The vehicle was totaled and sold by the insurance company. They will hold it for only 4 days for investigation. The vehicle was recalled and serviced for similar problems in the past. I contacted the Toyota regional office on 02/27/2014, but they will not do an investigation.

54 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2013

On the top part of my hood on my 2005 Toyota Tacoma pre-runner. The paint is chipping/ flaking off to where the metal is being shown. The paint everywhere else on my truck is fine, except on the trim around the wheel-well is fading. The other problem is with the rear console latch which closes and opens the console broke after eight months of driving my truck. The latch did feel like it was sticky until I closed the top part of the console and the latch broke off. I was able to take it off myself but I eventually found out in order to replace that part I would have to buy an entire new console for a part I took off in less than thirty seconds. Those are the only issues with my 2005 Toyota Tacoma.

55 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2013

Last fall, I was advised by a private garage that my 2005 Tacoma had excessive frame rust. I brought it to my local Toyota dealer for an inspection. They told me that the vehicle was not safe to drive and I should not drive it until the frame was repaired. I opened a case with Toyota and have heard nothing. I wrote letters to the gm at the local dealership in lakewood, NJ and the regional manager in NJ, both of which have gone unanswered. I cannot sell the vehicle nor trade it in the shape it is in, nor should I be using it (although I must). There is a hole in the boxed part of the frame that is about 8" long and 2-3" high. There may be more by now. The rust has gotten so bad that it is staining my driveway, which is blacktopped! I bought this vehicle because of Toyota's reputation. They did the right thing with the frames on the 1st generation Tacoma, it about time they were encouraged to do so with the newer vehicles before people get hurt.

56 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2013

After having my truck inspected, I was informed by my mechanic that the frame of my truck was rusting and in the future it will not pass inspection. To me this is ridiculous since I only have 36000 miles on my vehicle. Toyota recalled the Tacoma trucks between 2000 and 2004. Evidently some 2005 Tacoma's should also be included in this recall. I have read online of other numerous people having the same problem. We should not have to pay to have a dealership check out the problem and then pay for fixing this problem if at all possible. Toyota has just made a non buyer of me of their vehicles in the future.

57 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2013

Was advised of severe rust problem on frame of vehicle by independent garage. Brought vehicle to local Toyota dealer for inspection after opening a case with Toyota (1308190057). Dealer service manager wrote on invoice "advised customer that hole in frame frt left side call #800 number for Toyota no programs or warranty at this time. Advise customer to fix frame before driving cannot tell if there are any other spots in frame that will rust thru. Advise customer to fix frame before driving vehicle. " there is a great deal of rust on the frame and various other parts under the vehicle, as evidenced by my inspection and large rust stains on my driveway. Sent letters to Toyota regional office in NJ and to the general manager of the local dealership, both of which went unanswered.

58 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2013

The frame is rotting through on the drivers side inside frame rail. The pressed c channel frame is also rotting and separating. I take very good care of my truck. People are constantly telling me. How good it looks for the year. It is ridiculous and Toyota motor company is not doing anything. The dealer has contacted corporate and they do not intend to do anything about the 2005 and up Tacoma frame rusting/rot problem.

59 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2013

Went to get vehicle inspection, dealer said frame has rotted to a unsafe degree and will not inspect. I cant use my $30,000 truck for work because of a known Toyota frame rusting issue.

60 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2013

2005 Tacoma with severe rust perforations to frame. Notifed vehicle unsafe to drive. Dealer will not warranty or assist. 8 yr old vehicle undrivable. I took my 2005 Tacoma in to sevrco auto windward in kaneohe, hi on 25 April 2013 to have the vehicle inspected for severe rust perforations on the frame. When I dropped the vehicle off the attendant notified me that Toyota had seen a number of these frame issues and that they had warrantied 2 frames that he knew off--at a cost of approximately $12,000. 00 per frame. On April 29th, I was told that my vehicle was unsafe to drive and that I would need to sign a waiver to retrieve my vehicle. Dealer had inspected the vehicle and sent photos to Toyota to see if warranty work would be covered. On may 10th, I was contacted by dealer and they notified me that my vehicle was not covered under warranty and that they would do nothing for me. I spent over $30,000. 00 on a Toyota because they had a reputation for reliability and customer service. Now 8 years later, I have a truck that is unsafe to drive, and no recourse from the dealer.

61 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2013

There is a hole in the frame below the drivers door due to rust. Vehicle may be unsafe due to a faulty frame. Prior years had problems with the frame. My husband drives the truck 500 miles a week to work. Toyota claims nothing is wrong and will not do anything about it.

62 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

I have a hole on the inside of box frame next to the cat. Convertor on driver side. This was discovered back in January of 2013, and was immediately reported to the Toyota rep over the dealership. I've inquired about the situation 3 times since then and have just gotten the answer that its under investigation. This hole which I can almost stick my fist through looks to be located in the crumble zone, and is in a high stressed part of the frame. I know Toyota has recalled first generation trucks for frame rot, but why haven't they recalled any of the second generation trucks for the same issues. You can search the web and find that I'm not alone when it comes to frame rot on the second generation Tacoma trucks. Toyota needs to buck up and fix these issues before someone gets severely injured or killed due to the defective frames. People spend the extra money on Toyota vehicles for quality durability and longevity. I work for a Toyota production plant and I can't imagine that they are avoiding such a dangerous issue that needs to be resolved ASAP. I hope that the national highway transportation looks into this and forces a recall before lives are lost!.

63 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2012

Vehicle was at dealer shop for brake job and technician reported rusted-through failure of frame which renders the vehicle unsafe to drive. This is a second generation Tacoma, 2005 model year.

64 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2012

The frame is rusting. There are hole starting to form.

65 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2009

Update on complaint already filed for a Toyota Tacoma 2005 accident date was June 17, 2009 not August.

66 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2007

Two years after the purchase of this truck new in December of 2004, I started to notice rust on the frame. Now having kept the truck garaged at all times and with slightly over 31,000 miles on it the frame is getting very rusty.

67 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2007

Within a year of purchase, the rear leaf springs became soft and the truck bottomed out on bumps. I took it to a local dealer (haddads, pittsfield, MA) and they refused to service it claiming nothing was wrong. I later took it to a springfield dealership and received the same answer. I then took it to superior spring in pittsfield. They found both springs were broken and had to be replaced. I called Toyota and they refused to honor the warranty, claiming I had over loaded the truck. I had not ever carried more than a few hundred lbs in the bed of this 1/2 ton truck. I have owned the truck since new and been the sole operator. A few weeks ago the steering became sticky. My mechanic replaced the steering shaft at a cost of $400. He stated that Toyota should recall the vehicle for this because he sees this part fail often due to poor construction. Also, the frame on this truck has significant rust already and does not look like it will outlast the body and drive train. I'm not pleased.

68 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2006

The frame of the truck is rusting out at an accelerated rate. The welds are rusting out at high stress points (engine mounts and suspension areas). Toyota has a history of this problem with the Tacoma.

69 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2006

I have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma trd 4x4 they have replaced my front wheel bearings 6 times know my front diff, the transmission once and my rear end.
