5 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2020

There was a recall on the frame and in 2015 my father-in-law owned the vehicle and had it inspected and all I know is it passed. He is deceased now and I own the vehicle and recurved notification about a recall on the rear springs so made an appointment and they told me that they couldn't fix the problem because the frame was to rusted to safely take springs off to replace. The frame recall has expired but the spring recall is still in effect. So I feel that to fix the safety issue they should fix the frame so that they can fix the springs to solve the safety issue. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

6 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2020

Truck frame was inspected for rust damage by Toyota in 2016 as part of a recall. Toyota found the frame to be sound and treated it with anti-corrosive material. Just four years later, the truck frame has rusted through in several spots making it unsafe to drive.

7 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 04/22/2019

Mechanic noted rust on frame. Contacted Toyota, there was a lawsuit about premature rusting on frames, but settlement is done and there is nothing they(Toyota) can do?.

8 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2019

Exhaust system was in need of repair. Shop would not be able to fix because the frame is so rusted there is nothing left to attach new parts to. Shop showed me large holes in frame. Then advised me that I should not be driving it with the possibilities of breaking. Which I have heard happen to others. I have never received a notice or recall for this problem. The only recall that I have received and taken care of was the issue with the accelerator. This alarms me since I often have my children with me.

9 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2019

The frame is rusted through on the driver's side next to the catalytic converter. It has two rust holes that are connected with a crack that the rust is starting to widen. The holes are approximately 1-2 inches in size. I first bought the vehicle in 2013 at my home of record (minnesota) in-between duty stations. I'm active military and I'm stationed in north carolina. I deployed in 2017 and didn't get back until late 2018. In early 2019 stevenson hendrick Toyota contacted me to have recalls performed on my truck. I took it in and they did the seat belt, throttle pedal, and load rating sticker. However, I was never informed that my framed was rusted through. I found out after I had to troubleshoot my O2 sensors. At which point I contacted Toyota headquarters in regards to united states district court for the central district of California case no. 2:15-cv-02171-fmo-ffm to see if they would replace my frame or at least repair it; as I understood the timeframe had past that Toyota would replace the frame. I explained to them that I never received any notification about this and that I was deployed as well during this time. Toyota still refuse to fix the frame. When I take the truck in to get serviced sometimes they turn me away; as they don't want to held liable because of the frame. For the price to replace the frame I can purchase a used vehicle. I should not have to dispose of my vehicle when it runs fine and is paid for. Since then I have tried to find someone with the expertise to repair my frame, but no one wants to do the repairs and possibly be held liable afterwards.

10 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2018

We brought the truck in to have it checked for rust and corrosion that we seen, palmers airport Toyota said they seen none, the a-frame has rusted and corroded to the point of snapping and the metal is corroded and peeling with a crack going around the whole a-frame. The truck is now not moveable, the whole tire will fall off if we do move it, we made it back to our home with it luckily and Toyota corporate says there is nothing they can do.

11 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2017

Toyota frame recall - I have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma with holes and cracks visible in the frame. I can only imagine the damage internally to the frame. Huge chunks of frame rust come from the inside of the frame when pressure washed. The truck was originally purchased and resided in the northeast for the majority of the vehicle's life. The truck was obviously exposed to road salts and as a result the frame has been compromised. The Toyota dealer must be aware of the history of the vehicle as the truck was serviced regularly at Toyota dealerships and third party service centers throughout the northeast. In 2014 Toyota tried to covered up the problem with a "rust inhibitor" which only hide the true damage on the frame. I recently took my truck to autonation Toyota at 2555 colonial blvd, fort myers, FL 33907 phone:(239) 321-5413 for a different recall, the rear springs. I requested the frame be replaced under the recent Toyota frame recall settlement and was simply ignored. I am currently driving my truck as a necessity knowing there may be a catastrophic failure at any time. Toyota has agreed in court to either replace or buy out the vehicles affected. My truck is a danger to myself and others on the road but I can't afford another vehicle. I have taken pictures of the affected areas of the frame as evidence of the damage. Please help!.

12 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2017

The frame is rusting and has perforations which could lead to frame failure. The vehicle has been kept in immaculate condition over its life. The level of corrosion on this vehicle did not happen in two years. Toyota needs to notify their customers that these vehicles are corroding faster (because they fought the same issue in court and won). They need to point that they are not legal to drive despite the inspections approved.

13 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2016

I purchased my 2005 Toyota Tacoma used with 108,000 miles on it on 12/8/2016. It failed virginia inspection on 12/20/2016 due to rust in the frame. The truck is not safe or legal to drive. Toyota will not cover the damage under lsc e0d, which expired in March 2016, despite that the vehicle was in a Toyota dealer twice during the service campaign.

14 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2016

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Tacoma. Upon trading in the vehicle, the contact was informed that the frame was cracked and rusted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the frame was rusted and split and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and referred the contact to the heffner group. The failure mileage was 26,000.

15 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2016

Toyota truck recall on frame rust and corrosion. I brought truck to prime Toyota lancaster MA the frame was coated with an undercoat paint. The truck went in for repairs when it was on the lift the mechanic said there were holes and corrosion in the frame and it was a safety issue to drive. I asked the dealer about having it fixed I was told to contact corporate. Corporate told me the recall has been closed out and that did what was necessary to fix it. They just covered up the rust and corrosion. I'm afraid to drive my truck for fear I might get seriously injured. I need help thank you!.

16 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2016

Frame defect with rust and corrosion. Not sure when the corrosion started, but I discovered Nov 11, 2016 - while doing a transmission fluid change. The major rust and corrosion appear to be concentrated near the catalytic converters on both sides of the vehicle affecting the integrity of the frame. See attached photos for left side (driver side) and right side (passenger side).

17 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2016

While underneath truck investigating noise from vibrating metal I noticed the frame badly rusted near the catalytic converter to the point where a large hole formed. Rusted pieces of the frame fall off when lightly tapped with a hammer. A quick internet search made it apparent this is a very common problem. Truck was bought and always registered in a southern state but was driven in illinois for 3 years while on military orders. There is surface rust everywhere but I haven't done a complete inspection yet to find other holes.

18 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2016

The Tacoma is susceptible to unusual amounts of frame rust and while underneath mine, changing the oil in the truck I found holes in the truck frame large enough to fit my fist in. So far I've received the run around from Toyota. They had a limited service campaign and replaced many truck frames. That stopped in March of 2016. Now they aren't doing anything about this problem and leaving it on the shoulders of americans to deal with. In addition to that, after their own admission, one could only suspect that the frames that weren't replaced have a high likelihood of failure on the highways, especially in states where they (the states) don't do rigorous inspections to get vehicles licensed. After the research that I've done I've discovered a few things; the trucks have a fundamental frame problem. Toyota admitted that there is a problem. Many of us, (tacoma owners) can't afford to replace the truck frame or purchase another vehicle to replace it with potentially making the highways and Toyota drivers unsafe because of a known manufacturing defect that Toyota won't rectify. Additionally, I'm sure based on forums and other reviews I've uncovered online, that many of the vehicle owners are completely unaware of the defect and the threat to their own safety, and the safety of those around them on the roadways due to said defect.

19 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2016

I purchased a 2005 Toyota Tacoma in August of 2015. I took my vehicle to a Toyota dealer to remove a wheel lug nut in September of 2015. I was advised by a Toyota service representative that there was a recall on the frame of my truck but when the service records were checked, the service representative advised that the recall service had been performed on my truck by treating the frame. On March 17 2016 my son took the truck to our local Toyota dealer in reference to the leaf spring recall. The service representative advised the same information to my son in reference to the frame recall and that the service treatment had been performed. My vehicle was never inspected on these two occasions at the Toyota dealer for possible frame damage. My son and I inspected the vehicle and located what appeared to be rust near the leaf spring hangers which was coming under the protective coating that had been applied by Toyota. I scheduled an appointment with my local Toyota dealer to inspect the frame. On April 15 2016 the service representative advised me that the frame had a hole in the frame on the drivers side near the part of the frame where it starts to go towards the motor. The service representative advised that in his opinion the hole had been there for awhile and that the hole could not have gotten that large in a year since being treated. I contacted Toyota and was advised this was not a recall but a service campaign and that it expired on March 31 2016 and that they could not give any assistance with the rusted frame. I advised the Toyota case manager that I could understand if it had never been inspected or treated but that's not the case with my vehicle. I also advised the case manager that it was apparent that the frame treatment did not stop the problem with rust in the frame. She just kept advising that Toyota could not assist me with this matter.

20 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2016

10 - 12 inch long vertical rust and cracks in the frame. Located on both sides of the frames interior. Locations are both opposite of the catalytic converters. I was told by a friend there was an issue and Toyota was replacing the frames due to inferior quality of production causing a safety issue in which the frames were rusting from the inside out. I made an appointment with the local dealer on 4/4/2016, I had to wait until 4/13/2016 for the first available appointment. Upon arriving at the dealer I was informed the "recall" expired March 31st and they can do nothing for me. They refused to even look at the issue. I called Toyota to ask if there was any recourse as I had never received notification of this issue let alone a deadline. I was told this was not a recall and the time had expired and there was nothing they would do for me. I am afraid the truck is not safe to drive.

21 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2016

2005 Toyota Tacoma frame rust recall. Toyota rep inspected the frame and stated it has failed due to rust and corrosion. Toyota refuses to offer any remedy for this problem. Frame could break and cause personal or vehicle damage.

22 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2016

A limited service campaign notified me of possible frame rust problem. Received crc coating 9/10/2014. Noticed rust had advanced through the frame and notified dealer. Dealer checked damage 3/21/16 and gave me a Toyota customer service number. Toyota said they couldn't do anything about it since I received the crc coating, which was poorly applied. (see pictures of overspray on bed, indicating it had not been removed to spray the whole frame) punished for being proactive. Stuck with a rusty frame.

23 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2016

I purchased this truck about a year ago. I recently heard of a settlement regarding rusty frames. My truck has one, very bad and I need to know how to proceed to get this fixed or traded in.

24 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

Major rust damage on frame after only 8 years of vehilce being released, a 2 by 4 inch wide hole on both sides for the trucks frame causing warping and bending as well as unsafe driving conditions. When taken to Toyota dealership repairs took 9 months, and upon completion was send back to owners possession without test driving or verifying project completion.

25 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2015

My truck frame is severely rusted. Toyota had a voluntary frame exchange program, for which I qualified. I first took my truck to the local dealer (penn Toyota in greenvale, NY) for inspection as per Toyota's program in October 2015. Dealer confirmed that a new frame is needed and advised me that it is on order. Since oct 2015, I followed up with dealer several times, and in January 2016, dealer advised that they do not have the documentation in their system. So I brought my truck back in again, and service manager jimmy confirmed that I am entitled to a new frame under Toyota program and they will place the order for me. Again, I continued to follow up several times each month and was told that frame is on order. In March 2016, I followed up again with dealer because the Toyota program was about to expire. Dealer again reassured me that my case is in the system but it will take some time to receive new frame. In April 2016, I followed up again but this time I was told that there is no data in their system about having ordered a new frame for my truck. I immediately contacted Toyota corporate office and they opened a case number (160-422-2525). I was told by Toyota representative handling my case that they are getting a new frame for me. It is now September 2016 and I still have not received any new updates. Due to the large rust holes in my frame and having read reports of other owners having similar issues (and Toyota's acknowledgement of the problem as evidenced by the frame replacement program), I have not been able to fully make use of my truck since I first learned about the rust because I do not feel safe driving it.

26 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2015

In reference to u. S. District court for the western district of arkansas case number: 1:14-cv-02208 I currently own a 05 Tacoma that has the frame rusted completely, I've contacted Toyota repeatedly about this issue and they are denying to fix this because this vehicle is no longer in the USA. My argument here is that Toyota has known about this problem and has had may complaints about it yet did nothing about it, they should fix this the vehicle regardless of where it is because it poses a major safety risk to my life and others on the road.

27 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2014

The vehicle has significant frame rust. There are several areas on the frame where large sections of metal have delaminated. This presents a structural integrity issue in key supporting areas of the frame assembly for major components to include drive train, braking and suspension. The overall crash worthiness is in question due to the structural integrity issue presented by the frame design, metal composition and premature rusting and metal fatigue. Toyota has started a limited service campaign to apply a corrosion resistance protection, but this issue should be a safety recall. Based on the magnitude of damage from rusting in my case the only resolution would be a full frame replacement. I have pictures of the frame damage and rust available. I will also be sending Toyota a letter requesting an inspection by the regional factor representative prior to any repairs.

28 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2014

Toyota sent me a recall notice (that was not listed on your site) for rust on the frame. I had the dealership inspect it and they said that it is bad and Toyota will replace the frame. The dealership is telling me that specific parts (the power steering rack and lines) that are rusty will not be able to be put back when the frame is replaced (and the truck assembled again) but I have to pay the cost. I had those specific parts looked at by my mechanic and although a portion (the lines are bad and I am having replaced) the ps rack is not in bad condition. I contacted Toyota to see what they will cover and was told they will not cover parts that are not the frame. My truck is 10 years old. It is in great condition and runs great and I planned to keep it for a long time. My concern is that when you try to disassemble a whole vehicle (which is 10 years old) some of the parts that are in good working condition, once banged around trying to remove them, will break. I am concerned that I have to pay for these parts. If Toyota is replacing the frame due to safety issues, isn't it their responsibility to replace other parts that were fine prior to making the recall fix?.

29 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 11/26/2014

I live in ne pennsylvania and was just informed by my mechanic that my truck may not pass another inspection due to frame rust. Specifically along side the catalytic converter. My dealer said there is a limited recall in the new england states but not PA. Will Toyota expand the recall?.

30 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2014

Vehicle's frame is rusting and flaking apart. The vehicle was taken to a Toyota dealership per their limited service campaign to apply a corrosion-resistant compound. One year later that compound is starting to fall off as the rust beneath it lets loose. Since there is physically less frame material than when the truck was built I feel that this vehicle would suffer considerable damage in a collision as the the strength of the frame has been compromised. I am also concerend that the vehicle could loose control if the frame fails at highway speed after encountering a large pothole. You can see how the rust has aggressively attacked the many welds on this frame and weekend the joints. While the manufacturer did make an attempt to coat the frame and hide the rust there are several places on the interior of the frame that recieved no treatment at all. You can still see the metal flaking away in those untreated areas. To have some surface rust on a 10 year old vehicle is normal but this problem is way beyond surface rust. While Toyota has agreed to replace frames with considerable size holes I think that frames like mine are being overlooked. Rather than have a single point of failure my entire frame is weekend and will continue to weaken as the compound they applied is failing to stop the rusting. While the frame does not currently have a hole it is only a matter of time based on the flaking rust. Toyota is not willing to offer any help with future holes because they sprayed the compound on the frame. Unfortunately the compound doesn't protect the entire frame and it is prone to peeling off. Even if the compound were applied correctly it in no way provides the structural integrity that the frame once had.

31 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2014

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Tacoma. The contact noticed that the subframe was rusted. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000.

32 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2014

I have noticed excessive rust on the frame of my 2005 Toyota Tacoma and also rust hole through the frame/leaf spring mount on the right side. I did contact and send pictures to Toyota customer experience center file# stating that the vehicle is out of warranty and they wont repair this unsafe condition that so many Tacoma's are having. When one of these Tacoma's gets into an accident with the frames compromised by the rust it will cause severe injury or death to the occupants and this has to be fixed now.
