36 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2014

This is a known frame rusting problem that Toyota has not addressed properly. I took my 2006 Toyota Tacoma to the service dealer and they sprayed an anti rust compound on it. The problem is that the frame is totally rusted out and is going to be a safety issue later down the road. Toyota reached a settlement with the frame manufacturer, they did not properly coat the frame at time of manufacture. There is not a warranty on the corrosion compound after the corrosion campaign is over in March of 2016. This leaves the consumer with a truck that is not road worthy. I replaced the release bearing in my transmission, while working on it rust was literally falling in my eyes due to the amount of rust on the frame. I have never seen a frame rust out so quickly and am very disappointed that Toyota knows there is an issue but is covering it up with a thick tar like substance to "remedy" the problem. This is just covering up a down the road safety issue that should be addressed by Toyota immediately by replacing the frame. 1995 through 2000 Tacoma trucks were bought back. 2001 through 2004 received anti corrosion compound and or frame replacement. The difference is that those trucks that received the compound received a 15 year extended warranty if the frame were to fail inspection down the road. Not the case with the 2005 and up Tacomas.

37 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2014

I own a 2006 Toyota Tacoma prerunner, purchased new from the dealer eight years ago. In less than six years, the car’s frame started showing damages and today it shows severe rust and flaking. The severe rust under the car is widespread and in certain areas there are perforations through the frame structure. (see pictures attached). Because of this unexpected condition my Tacoma has lost considerable resale value and is resting in my driveway for fear of further damage and safety issues. (I have two small children). After some research I became aware that Toyota has acknowledged that this excessive rusting is due to a manufacturing defect and addressed the problem for some vehicle owners by either replacing the frame at no cost for the owners or buying the vehicles back. I took the car to the Toyota dealer to have it assessed and after a full inspection, the truck failed the rust frame inspection. The Toyota dealer report states as follows: “frame was found to have severe corrosion. Frame need to be replaced” with and rough estimate cost of $ 10,000. 00. I consider this defect to be a serious and unacceptable condition for a 8 year-old vehicle with Toyota’s reputation. I have invested and trusted the Toyota brand for over 20 years and feel very disappointed at how Toyota is addressing my concerns. I am asking your Toyota corporation to take my concerns seriously and to address this severe rust issue the same way you have done with 1995-2000 Tacoma owners, either by replacing my frame at no cost or buying back my vehicle.

The body of my Tacoma is perfect --no rust. The frame however exhibits stage iv cancer rust. Toyota knows about it as they sued ''dana" the frame manufacturer and received millions in compensation and in 2009 went with a different manufacturer. In August 2014 they came out with limited campaign for select VIN #'s 2005-2008 Tacomas sold in the northeast to either treat or replace rusted frames. Mine however was not one of them even though I live in one of the select states. How can that be? if they could see my truck they would ask the same question but they have refused to look at it. Im sorry but besides the fact that my truck is probably not going to be around to see old age there is the safety factor involved. What if I am hauling a load and the stress of the load breaks a weld that has been eaten away by corrosion? Toyota should be forced to do the right thing instead of pretending a problem doesn't exist. Go online and enter "tacoma frame rust" if you want to see how prevalent this problem is. Thank you.

39 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2014

2006 Toyota Tacoma trd sport acess cab. Found hole on frame rail from rust, about 3/4" hole behind the right front wheel, below the condensor drain.

40 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2014

My driver's side visor won't stay up creating a very dangerous situation when driving. In over 30 years of owning a vehicle with as much as 240,000 miles on it, I have never had this happen before. It will cost me $100 to replace it due to poor engineering on the manufacturer's part. Toyota should recall this item and offer a replacement visor.

41 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2014

We left our truck at a Toyota dealership for repair of rattle in front end, state inspection and oil change. The vehicle was returned to us without repair as there is an abnormal amount of rust on the frame and holes through the frame. We were informed that the vehicle will not pass inspection. I called Toyota customer service and was informed that our vehicle is not included in the previous recall, but may be included in the upcoming recall. However, I was not provided with a time frame and if our vehicle is definitely included. My husband uses this vehicle to commute to and from work daily and I fear for his safety.

42 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2014

Significant rust in the frame of the vehicle. Baseball size hole in the frame adjacent to the driver side catalytic converter. Major rust throughout the rest of the frame. You can see swelling in some areas where there are two layers of steel that are sandwiched together. Brake and fuel lines have severe corrosion. Factory installed towing hitch is completely un-useable due to severe rust. Toyota corporate told me I am out luck. Would hate to see what would happen in a crash of one of these trucks with a defective frame! the brakes could fail also due to the rusted brake lines. Fuel lines could also start leaking at some point creating a fire hazard.

43 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2014

Vehicle failed PA inspection due to extensively rusted frame. The entire frame has been compromised. There are visible holes in the frame including spare tire support, gas tank supports, etc. The dealer and I both contacted Toyota but they refuse to stand behind their product because the said they are not required to since no notice has come from nhtsb. According to the dealer, this same problem is known on earlier models of the Tacoma and the Toyota tundra.

44 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2014

The vehicle frame is very corroded in numerous spots, especially in weld areas and behind the front wheels. Some fasteners also appear to be abnormally corroded. The engine accessory pulleys are also in very poor condition. The corrosion is odd in that it is not consistent. I mean that some components and fasteners show minor corrosion while others are excessive. The vehicle frame is also very corroded in isolated areas and not uniform. Odd.

45 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2014

Holes are rusting in the frame.

46 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2014

I have been experiencing significant rusting of my frame. I have complained to Toyota about it with little satisfaction. I also waiting excessively about rear leaf springs recall notices. Remedy taking too long. I also issues with TSB but Toyota placing burden on owner, not company.

47 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2014

I received a letter in 2014 about possible frame rust issues and was asked to have mine checked at a Toyota dealer. I took it in and was told my frame was ok but the dealership said they sprayed a rust inhibitor on the frame to be sure. I was notified about possible rear leaf springs in 2017. I took the vechicle back to the same dealer (steven Toyota in harrisonburg va. ) and they replaced the rear springs but said nothing about the frame. I took the vehicle took an independent mechanic in August 2019 to have a muffle installed and they contacted me and informed me the vehicle was not safe to drive because the frame was rusted badly rusted out. On futher inspection it was found that when the vehicle was sprayed with rust inhibitor only the outside of the frame was sprayed, nothing under the vehicle was sprayed and that is where the damage is now. At least 2 of the cross members have rusted into 2 separate pieces so they now support nothing. I reported the issue to Toyota corp. And they refused to do anything about it. I also reported it to steven Toyota in harrisonburg va and was told they had the records of the vehicle frame being sprayed in 2014 and springs being replace in 2017 but they also refuse to do anything about this problem. In my opinion and in other mechanics I have spoken with when the springs were replaced in 2017 the rust issue had to be noticed because of how badly it is rusted at this time.

48 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/14/2014

The frame on my 2006 Toyota Tacoma is rusting through and I'm not happy about it. I believe there was a recall for 2004 and earlier Tacoma models. The manufacturer should be held responsible for more recent models with the same defect. How do I get Toyota to do the right thing? when I called my dealer they told me there that there was no recall or directive to fix it, therefore they wouldn't!.

49 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2014

My truck has severe rust in the front frame that appears to be rusting the body from the inside out! I purchased this vehicle new (Toyota Tacoma 2006) because I believed that Toyota was a reputable company who stand by their claims of ê»built to lastê». I also purchased a full maintenance program to be sure I was taking care of the vehicle properly and faithfully met every service. The dealer never pointed out a rust problem on these services but did on other instances like broken antenna, cloudy fluids etc. When a piece of metal fell off the front underside of the body of the truck, I was horrified to notice severe rust and took it to a local mechanic to get his opinion. When he first looked at truck as I drove in, he said your truck looks great, no rust on upper painted surfaces. When he looked underneath he remarked he had never seen rust so bad on such a new truck! I researched online and found many instances of a voluntary recall on Tacoma frames model year 1998-2004) to either be replaced at Toyotas cost or buy back, because inferior metal had been used. Seems that 2006 models are having the same problem and I have an appt. With my local dealer on 6/5/2014. I am praying they will help me with this issue as I sunk all my savings in this truck.

50 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2014

Although I've under coated my Tacoma every two years the frame is rusting badly. I'm afraid soon the truck may not pass inspection. I entered a case number with corporate Toyota of 1401210260. I was instructed to have it inspected by a Toyota dealer. On Tuesday, Feb 4, 2014, the truck was inspected by allegheny Toyota in franklin, PA. On the 5th of Feb. (yesterday) the service manager called and informed me that Toyota would not rectify the problem but I could, at my own expense, cover the rust problem with some kind of coating. There have been many complaints about the frame rust problem with the 2006 Tacoma. In the past Toyota admitted the same problems with earlier built Tacomas and corrected them either by replacing the frames or monetary compensation. I would like my truck repaired . Soon the vehicle will be unsafe to drive. Thank you.

51 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2013

Brought my Tacoma in for regular maintenance. Mechanic pointed out that there is severe rot/rust on the frame. There is severe flaking in several different areas. The most affected part is the front driver's side.

52 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/16/2013

While changing the oil on my 2006 Toyota Tacoma, I notices significant rust on the frame of my truck. I scraped at some and chunks fell off revealing a weakened frame. My spare has not been able to hold air and upon inspection the entire metal area that holds the tire in place is rusted. The milage is under 90k I would like to have this documented as I have been reading other complaints from 2006 Tacoma owners they are experiencing the same problem as myself. This car is as a family vehicle as utilize it in camping, canoeing and other outdoor activities. Thank you.

53 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2013

Vehicel frame: approximately one to two years ago began to notice excessive rust on vehicle frame. Corrosion is significantly more than what would be expected for a vehicle less than eight years old. Parts attached to frame also excessively corroded. Concerned for overall safety and integrity of vehicle at this point. Suspension and leaf springs point of contact with frame are corroded. All nuts/bolts attached to frame are also excessively rusted and corroded. Vehicle has approximately 75000 miles. It was purchased as a long term vehicle. I expected a new vehicle to have a longevity of more than eight years. According to Toyota the vehicle is beyond warranty and there will be no action taken on their part. A small amount of rust on a vehicle this age is expected however this corrosion is reaching the point of a catastrophic failure.

54 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2013

Truck's brakes failed, towed to shop. Shop replaced steel brake lines with copper nickel but warned of rust to frame. When truck was at home, put it up on stands, went underneath, checked frame and found holes made by rust through the frame. Toyota recalled earlier Tacoma's (up to 2004) for defective frames. This 2006 Tacoma has exactly the same problem - rust holes in frame. These Tacomas are unsafe to drive. There should be a recall of 2005 and 2006 Tacomas and maybe more. This truck at 39000 miles has rsuetd through frame and rusted through brake line.

55 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2013

My passenger side sun visor is flopping down by itself blocking my field of view while driving. I had to replace my driver's side sun visor over a year ago because of the same issue. Toyota has apparently improved the design of the sun visor, but will not recall the old design and will gladly charge you $120 to replace it. This is a serious visability issue that Toyota needs to repair at no cost to the customer.

56 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2013

My 2006 Toyota Tacoma frame has rusted apart in four places. Two repair facilities deemed it unsafe to drive. I am devastated!!! please help. I have heard of many, many cases of this and Toyota should be held liable. My truck only had 60,000 miles when the problem began, now it has 90,000 and is undrivable. Please help.

57 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2012

Frame has rusted through. Truck will no longer pass PA state inspection. Had welding done to repair but there are numerous other areas on frame with severe rust. Would like to see this addressed by Toyota before it causes a crash.

58 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/30/2012

The frame of my 2006 Tacoma is rusting severely, especially the welds that hold the frame together. I took my truck to the Toyota dealership and they told me there is nothing wrong with 'surface rust' and it's 'normal', even though it is obvious that the problem is a galvanic reaction and will eventually cause structural failure. The two previous generation Tacoma's had the same problems. There are hundreds of people that I have found across north America with the same problem. Toyota obviously understands what the problem is but refuses to acknowledge it. I have taken action to protect the frame but Toyota refuses to assume any responsibility for an obvious defective manufacturing process.

59 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2012

Since the vehicle was about 6 years-old I've experienced a high degree of frame rust. Since this time, on a annual basis, I've spot painted (with rust protectant paint) areas of the frame that is 'peppered' with rust. Recently, I found out that this problem is rampant throughout the Tacoma community, so I have since contacted Toyota. The local dealership has been non-responsive, so I am in the process of dealing with the corporate customer service department. As I write this, I am awaiting their response. I find this frame rust problem dangerous and unacceptable. My local climate only sees an average humidity level of 5%, with very little rain, yet still the frame is peppered with rust each year I do my inspection.

60 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2012

Rear driver side leaf springs have started digging into the side of fuel tank. No leak yet. Visual signs of damage.

61 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2010

My 06 Toyota Tacoma has accellerated two times,I contacted Toyota and NHTSA. Got the run around from Toyota, like everone else and the NHTSA did not do anything. .

62 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2006

Toyota sent me a notice last year called a "limited service campaign" for "certain 2005 through 2008 model year Tacoma vehicles corrosion-resistant compound application to the vehicle's frame". The notice said that these Tacomas' frames were rusting more than usual due to insufficient corrosion protection. The campaign applied only to cold weather states like minnesota. It went on to say that I should bring my Tacoma to my local Toyota dealer and have the frame inspected for damage. Jan. 2015: I brought my Tacoma to maplewood Toyota in minnesota. They told me that the frame was indeed damaged with holes and perforations already present. They said Toyota would replace the frame and that it would take several months for the frame to arrive, plus time to replace it. We were going to move to colorado in the spring so I decided to have the work done there. Maplewood Toyota said that was fine. We moved to loveland, colorado on June 19, 2015. I then contacted the Toyota national headquarters and explained the situation to them and asked if I could bring my Tacoma to pedersen Toyota in fort collins, colorado, which is right next to loveland. They said ok. Their findings were the same: damaged frame with holes and perforations. They also said the truck was unsafe to drive and they would give me a rental for the 5 months. But then they said that while they would pay for the frame, I would have to pay for any rusted-on parts they would break, and I should expect to pay 2 to 3 thousand dollars for that! I called the national Toyota headquarters and they said the same thing. They also said Toyota is not admitting to defective corrosion protection, and that it isn't a recall. I told them it wasn't right to make me pay for parts attached to the frame that they break because they did a defective job in the first place. They said there was nothing they could do! please help me.
