1 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2020

When pressing the break pedal to stop the truck, the break pedal will go straight to the floor. The breaks will not engage the truck will not stop. Pumping the breaks does not bring the breaks back. No dashboard light come on. The breaks will be gone for any length of time and then will start working again. Stopping the truck and turning it on and off will not bring the breaks back. Only way to stop the truck when the breaks go out is with the parking break. This is an intermittent problem sometimes they work sometimes they don't. When the breaks would go out it was always at speeds over 40mph and on highways country roads and always on a return trip after the car had been turned off once. After the first incident took it to Toyota dealership they said it was bad front breaks and front left bearing, replaced both took it home two weeks later breaks went out again on highway while trying to stop at a light, brought it back to Toyota dealership, breaks were still out. They said nothing was wrong except I heated up my front breaks while trying to stop, and that they were now cool and I should not have the problem again. I asked them to check all the other components of the breaking system they said they were fine. At no time did any light come on on the dashboard. I picked it up from dealership there was no breaks on the truck. So I towed home. Had break booster and check valve replaced re-flushed breaks. Problem accured again, took it to local mechanic who believes it's the abs modular. Have been trying to replace abs modular since may of 2020, Toyota says there is a backorder of abs systems can not give an eta of when they will be back in stock. The problem might be unknown but the mechanic is pretty sure it is the abs modular.

2 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2018

Car abs wire disconnect, coolant in transmission lines and 4th gear not functional.

3 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/27/2017

Accelerated by itself. Unintended acceleration. My wife was driving our 2006 4x4 Toyota Tacoma on a 55mph road with or 3 year old and 1 year old children on March 2017 at around 12:00 noon, when she started to decelerate to turn onto side road she depressed the brakes but they didn't work, she pressed harder and there was no change; then the truck accelerated on its own while she still only applied the brake pedal, the brakes finally worked and she was able to navigate the turn, yet much too fast. Overt the next two miles to our house on a 35mph road, she stopped the truck fine (once at a stop sign, and once at our mailbox). However, as she pulled into our garage she stepped on the brake pedal and again the brakes did not work, and the truck again accelerated on its own and hit a tool cabinet which hit the garage wall. Thankfully she and the kids were ok. The truck has a push-bar on the front and that was pushed into the front bumper and grill, the Tacoma's front bumper is concaved in the middle and the ends are broken from where the join the front fenders, the lower grill area also broke. I immediately called three different Toyota dealerships to explain what had happened and ask if there was a recall. Two claimed to never have heard of this, and one of those told me to make sure a floor mat wasn't in the way (which it wasn't). One service advisor stated that this was similar symptoms to a national recall that had been issued for other Toyota models, but not our Tacoma was not one of those. I took to the internet and instantly found thousands of similar complaints by Tacoma owners, and even verbiage that nhsta has had thousands, maybe tens of thousands, of similar complaints for this generation Tacoma. I tested the truck later in the day and it worked as it should, however it's clear that Toyota, and this Tacoma, have unintended acceleration issues.

4 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2015

Took truck in for frames inspection--dealer says I get a new frame--no cost. Dealer is backing out of their word because campaign ended 3 months later--was told campaign would be good for several more year. Service adviser never checked ending date. Emergency brake cables are rusted again--fixed several times--poor product. Rear differential cover plug rusted beyond able to remiove to change fluid--another huge rust issue with Tacoma trucks--not just the frame. The steering mechanism, timing belt pulleys, wiring supports, etc --anything that is metal is corroded because of the poor quality of steel--just not the frame. The timing pulleys were so corroded that they cut my bel--lucky for me it still had 50% of it remaining and did not blow engine--truck had 63,000 miles on it at time. Told to bring truck in for rear springs campaign--I did--they don't have the in stallion kits--been back ordered for months. Campaign says they could rupture the gas tank and end in disaster--any you don't have parts!!!.

5 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2015

Car at approximately 2 mph at indoor parking garage. My foot was not on the gas pedal when car accelerated suddenly. Turned ignition off and was able to stop car before impact with several other vehicles.

6 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/11/2015

We have had several issues with our 2006 Toyota Tacoma which has 125331 miles. On may 11, 2015, we brought the truck into mountain states Toyota, for the repair of the rear drive shaft which had failed. I was experiencing a vibration even when driving at very low speeds that continued to get worse. I have enclosed the paperwork describing the repair, which I believe was tied to a recall, and another repair. October 19, 2012, the right rear leaf spring cracked and needed repair, mileage was 92303. At the time we did not know anything about the recall for the leaf springs, and the repair for the right had cost us 1408. 11. The repair shop also noticed at the time that the left rear leaf spring was also faulty and needed to be repaired, that was repaired a few days later 10/23/2012 the cost 1407. 61. At the time we had driven around not knowing what the vibration was only that the vehicle was very difficult to drive. The faulty leaf springs we were told at a later date by the Toyota dealer may have played a factor in the above repair. They could not guarantee that it had not been caused by the faulty leaf spring. On October 27, 2006 the head gasket needed to be repaired, the mileage at this time was 90102. The cost of the repair was 2866. 18. We also had an issue with the brakes just going on the vehicle while my son was driving the vehicle, in October. He luckily was able to gear down using the transmission to slow the vehicle down. When it was towed to mountain states Toyota, which is where he had had the brake fluid replaced a few months prior, paid in full for all repairs at the time. So I feel this issue was probably the fault of mountain states Toyota.

7 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2015

Got both brakes and rotors change still brakes do not work right does not stop very good.

8 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/24/2013

Purchased my truck from the dealership and have always taken it in for the oil change with the dealer inspection tickets since it was purchased. In the last inspection I was informed that the brakes needed to be replaced. Took it to another shop where the lead mechanic informed me that my car was "unsafe" due to significant rust on the leaf springs and frame area bolts near the leaf springs. I called the dealership to ask how my car had gone through all of these inspections and I had never heard that my vehicle had "unsafe" levels of rust on the undercarriage. I was informed that they do not inspect the undercarriage ( !? ). When I asked for the best course of action, I was informed that a car with rust on the frame should be junked. I cannot believe I spent all that money for what I thought was a quality truck that is unsafe to drive.

9 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/16/2013

On October 2013 I approached a red light (no car in front of me) the road surface was wet and the abs kicked in. When I applied the brake hard, the engine started to accelerate and I couldn't hold the truck back. I went through the red light avoiding an accident. I called the Toyota dealer and was told that I probably did not press down on the brake hard enough. On January 2014 the same thing occurred. Here again I was fortunate that another vehicle was not in front of me and this time I went through a stop sign. I called the dealer and had it checked out. They found nothing wrong. March 15th it happened again. Once again I was lucky that no vehicle was in front of me, but I now brake way in advance of a light or stop sign because of fear. This time when the engine started to accelerate I got off the brake and went right back on and the engine stopped accelerating. I once again put it in the garage and they found nothing wrong. I think that the unintentional acceleration is triggered when hard pressure is applied to the brakes when the abs kicks in. I'm not a rookie driver. I've been driving Tacomas for over 30 years. This is my 4th one. After happening three times, it is definitely a problem with the truck. This is a possible serious accident waiting to happen. What can I do to get Toyota to correct this problem? thank youi.

10 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2013

As I was rolling down hill and applying the brakes, the truck suddenly accelerated. As I pressed the brakes harder the anti-lock brakes activated and the truck continued to move forward for a short distance, almost into on coming traffic, while the engine could be heard loud as if the gas peddle was being pushed although the brakes were being applied only. Scary! uncontrollable forward movement and acceleration while braking.

11 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/23/2013

Finally did floor mat recall work done on my 2006 Tacoma. New floor mat is thin, flimsy, nothing like original thick all weather floor mat. I also want to add, there was nothing wrong with the original design aw floor mat for Tacoma vehicles, there was absolutely no interference with the accelerator pedal, and that the only reason I changed the mats was due to the mat ribs starting to break on the driver's side. In addition, the campaign called for the floor carpet to be vacuum cleaned and shampooed, and none of this was done. The dealer simply swapped-out the floor mats and charged-out $185 to "recall work", I don't even think they did any pedal adjustment. Here's the real problem: the new, thin, flimsy floor mat uses the old floor mat retainer hooks that were intended for the thick all weather floor mats. These floor mat hooks hurt my feet when driving barefoot, but more importantly, they can, they will, and they have caught and hooked-up the heel of my shoes on occasion. I am a very safe driver, do not tailgate vehicles, and I tell you now, these hooks have caused me to get into embarrassing situations and very near accidents due to my shoe getting caught in the hooks and not being able to brake properly and on time. If I modify the hooks or cut them, there is a good chance that the new mat will slide-up under the pedals, preventing use of the brakes and not being able to stop the vehicle. I will not do this, I will not assume this responsibility. At this present situation, at this present design, the liability rests with the manufacturer and the authorization for this recall design modification. As I mentioned earlier, there was no problem with the original design for this specific year/make/model; however, the recall modification did create a problem where none existed, and made the situation worse than original.

12 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 20 mph when he started to brake the brakes did not engage. The vehicle accelerated on its own and hit a vehicle in front of him . There were no damages to the vehicle, the police was not contacted. The contact took the vehicle to a dealer where they tested the brake system and could not duplicate the failure. This failure has occurred about to 4 to 5 times in one year. There had been no repairs done to the vehicle to date. The failure mileage was 50800 and current mileage was 50902.

13 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. While driving 18 mph and making a turn he depressed the brake pedal and it extended to the floor with no resistance. One week prior to the failure the brakes were replaced by a local mechanic. The road conditions were wet and covered with snow. The dealer advised the contact to bring in his vehicle for a diagnostic test at the owners expense for $200. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 98,000.

14 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2009

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. While traveling at approximately 30 mph, the contact applied the brakes and noticed a clanking noise from the front end of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership and was told that the vehicle was performing normally. The failure mileage was approximately 47,000. The current mileage was approximately 52,000.

15 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2009

I was creeping--2 or 3 mph--up to an intersection in my 06 Tacoma. When I tried to stop, I could feel the anti lock brakes shifting around, but the truck would not stop. It "drove itself" into the path of a mack dump truck, totaling my truck & sending me to the chiropractor twice so far. If my truck had managed to get another 2 or 3 feet into the intersection, the dump truck would have hit my driver's side door instead of the front tire. Odds are, I would not have survived that crash. My insurance is finding me at fault, Toyota offered to run diagnostics on the truck after it was fixed. My truck was hit so hard, it busted the engine block, so it won't be fixed, it's considered totaled. So I'm ?!@#$% unless you folks can get something done!.

16 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2009

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. When the contact depressed the brake pedal, the vehicle continued to accelerate and crashed through a fence. There were no injuries. He was able to pump the brake pedal and the vehicle gradually slowed down and came to a complete stop. The contact is in the process of taking the vehicle to the dealer for inspection and notifying the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 4,900 updated 8/10/09.

17 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2009

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. While driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle spontaneously accelerated to 100 mph without voluntary application of the accelerator pedal. When the failure occurred, the rpms abnormally increased and the braking system became inoperative. The contact had to depress the parking brake in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a dealer because the technician could not duplicate the failure or locate any diagnostic error codes. The failure and current mileages were 65,000. 4/01/09 updated 04/06/09.

18 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2008

I have a 2006 Toyota Tacoma v6 4d 6'bed. At highway speeds I noticed a vibration in the whike truck. My brake drums and rotors hae been replaced tires balanced by two companies and the problem still exist.

19 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2008

2006 Toyota Tacoma double cab has had acceleration when brakes were being applied, and episodes where the brake pedal can be pushed completely to the floor with no brake action what so ever. Have taken vehicle into Toyota dealer on 5 occasions with the complaint, but each time have been told that they couldn't find anything wrong (I think their investigation involved driving it around and seeing if the brakes worked--and they did at those times). The problem is episodic, and so is difficult to recreate. I believe that there has been a defect in the braking/cruise control/acceleration system since shortly after I purchased it. Today I was driving at a low speed and tried to stop at a red light. I pushed the brake pedal, it went to the floor and the truck did not stop, causing me to crash into another vehicle. I see that there are multiple similar complaints about this vehicle. When is somebody going to take this seriously? I think an independent panel should conduct an inquiry because I think Toyota knows something is wrong, but they don't want to acknowledge it.

20 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2007

Brakes always squeal noisily when damp after first starting truck, especially if backing up.

21 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2007

Cold start ,when backing up brakes squeaks very loud dealer stated is normal> had it in 7 times same problem dockuments to prove.

22 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2006

December 2006 truck parked with emergency brake off and would not move below freezing temperature. All four wheels locked up. Towed to dealer, after numerous attempts to fix he stated the wheel bearing were leaking grease and freezing up so truck would not move. Truck operates good all year till it gets below freezing and wheels lock up. Dealer does not know the problem, but only happens when parked and below freezing. December 10 2012 rear wheels lock up while driving in below freezing causing truck to slide and miss two on coming cars, truck ends up in ditch. Would sell vehicle but afraid anyone driving it in cold weather would be stranded or in a fatal wreck. Are other trucks having same issue as I hunt and go back 30 miles into the woods and if freezes I would be stranded.

23 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2006

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that while parking on a hill, the parking brake did not engage causing the vehicle to roll without warning. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown. Sg.

24 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2006

Brakes squeal when backing out of the driveway every morning. This happens only when the truck is used the first time every day. After it has been driven it is fine the rest of the day. The 2006 Tacoma has had this problem since day 1 and currently has 52,000 miles use. Very frustrating.

25 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2006

I have a 2006 Toyota Tacoma with 43,800 miles on it. I have taken the Tacoma in to valley high Toyota in victorville numerous times for a terrible braking problem that they are now recognizing on the prius. The truck does not stop when driving over any uneven surface. When we went to valley high Toyota we were told that it is abs brakes trying not to lock up. In fact, the brakes don't work at all in this situation which could lead to a very serious accident. Furthermore, there seems to be a problem with the motor mounts as well. In 2007 we took the truck in for its first motor mount problem, it seems that both motor mounts were stretched beyond repair and had to be replaced. We thought the problem was over, but in Nov. 2009 the driver side motor mount snapped completely through. The truck has never been driven roughly and this should not have happened. I researched this problem and found that there were new designs put into place on the 2007 Tacoma models. The mechanic working on the truck said he could tell the truck had not been driven hard and stated that he had seen this happen before. We have also noticed that since the first motor mount problem the transmission has been shifting extremely rough. We've asked valley high Toyota about the transmission several times and they have said there's nothing wrong with it. Our warranty is almost up and I'm worried we could have a transmission failure within the next several months. My daughter drives this truck, and I no longer feel its safe for her to drive. I am very concerned about these problems and the fact that our local Toyota dealer wont do anything about the brakes or the transmission, we are fortunate that the motor mounts did not cause the engine to fall out of the truck, causing serious damage to the vehicle and injury to my daughter and anyone else.

26 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2006

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that the brakes squeal when driving in reverse. The failure only occurs when the vehicle is cold. The Toyota dealer was unable to diagnose the failure. The engine size and current mileage were unknown. The failure mileage was 500.
