1 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2024

Vehicle: 2009 Toyota Tacoma VIN: [xxx] mileage: 128,400 owner: jacob grove, anderson, SC summary of issue: the frame of this 2009 Toyota Tacoma has developed severe rust perforation that makes the vehicle unsafe to drive. My independent mechanic has refused to work on it due to safety concerns, and Toyota of greenville (SC) has confirmed that the frame is extensively corroded and requires replacement. Background: Toyota previously issued a customer support program (csp) for frame corrosion affecting 2005–2009 Tacomas in northern states, including ohio, where this truck was purchased and operated. In June 2018, the vehicle was inspected at don wood Toyota in athens, OH (91,600 miles). The dealership recorded “no perforation” and did not apply the protective coating or replace the frame. The truck has been minimally driven since (an average of 6,000 miles per year). In may 2024, at 128,400 miles, a mechanic and dealership confirmed the frame has multiple areas of severe perforation, including around brake lines and exhaust mounts. Concern: it is unreasonable that a vehicle frame could go from “no perforation” to “severe perforation” in only 36,000 miles and six years of light use. This indicates either: the 2018 inspection under Toyota’s csp was inadequate, or the frame was already compromised but not properly addressed at the time. Safety risk: the vehicle cannot be safely lifted, worked on, or driven in its current condition. The rapid deterioration presents a risk of frame failure while driving, endangering occupants and others on the road. Request: I am submitting this complaint so that NHTSA is aware of ongoing frame corrosion failures in 2005–2009 Toyota Tacomas, even in cases where Toyota previously inspected and declined to repair during the csp period. This case demonstrates that the problem may not have been properly identified or corrected during program inspections, leaving unsafe vehicles on the road. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

2 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2023

Frame rotten from salt corrosion. Rust holes in frame.

3 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2023

In 2017, I participated in Toyotas frame recall where they determined that the frame didn’t need to be replaced and the dealership applied corrosion resistant undercoating. The frame has now developed a large 11inch visible crack and holes that will prevent it from passing state safety inspection. I contacted Toyota about the failure but they said they were unable to address it as this time due to the recall no longer being active and encouraged me to file a report with NHTSA.

4 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2023

I went to get my Tacoma inspected and it failed so to rust and corrosion of the frame. I was unaware that the frame recall was time sensitive and now my truck is in safe to drive because of the bad frame.

5 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2022

Never received notice for xx warranty enhancement program and found out in March 2022 as vehicle cannot pass inspection due to rusty on frame. Brand engagement advocate March 09, 2022 at 12:18 pm dear mark roberge, thank you for contacting Toyota motor sales, u. S. A. , inc. Regarding your frame concern in your 2009 Tacoma. We are sorry to learn you're experiencing a concern with your vehicle. We were able to further look into your frame concern and have verified your vehicle is beyond the parameters of the warranty enhancement program for this concern. This warranty enhancement program was an extension of the vehicle's basic warranty. Primary coverage for this program expired on 01/31/19 and secondary coverage for your vehicle expired 12 years after the date of first use: 06/30/20. Once the vehicle is outside of the program parameters, the cost of repairs becomes the owner’s responsibility, as the component is now outside of all factory coverage. We have also verified that one letter was sent to you at the mailing address we have on file. The remedy letter for the xx warranty enhancement program was sent on 11/08/2018. We hope this provides clarity to your inquiry. Your comment has been documented at our national headquarters under your case number. If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us. Sincerely, elizabeth Toyota brand engagement center.

7 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2022

The chassis of my truck is rusting through. I took it to the dealership and was told that the recall for the vehicle chassis expired in 2019. I told them I was not aware of the recall. They then told me the recall was extended until 2021. I told them I brought the vehicle in for a recall repair in 2020 and asked that they check for all recalled repairs. They said they couldn't help me and directed me to the manufacturer. I called Toyota and they claimed that I was ineligible for a recall. Every repair shop I've gone to told me that this is a very common defect with Toyota and everyone gets it resolved through recall. Please assist me.

I own a '09 Toyota Tacoma (VIN: 3tmlu42n99m034708) that I purchased 5/15/18 from long Subaru, webster MA. On 9/1/21 we noticed a rot hole in the frame. We then learned there was a recall/warranty extension on rotted '09 Tacoma frames. On 9/2/21 we brought the truck to Toyota of nashua, nh. We were told the warranty extension expired in may and the frame would not be covered. We were sent on our way as if this vehicle is safe to drive. I brought the vehicle to a mechanic to see if he could weld a plate over the hole. He said the frame was so rotted and nothing to weld it to. He also detected movement in the frame due to all the rot. He said it was unsafe to drive. On 9/23 I called Toyota corporate customer service to understand why I was never notified. They said they sent notification to the previous owner, then tried to backtrack and say they also sent it to me. Several days later we learned from a Toyota dealership employee (off the record) that the notification was never sent to us and only sent to the previous owner . Their failure to notify us of a safety recall (which some articles state was masked as a warranty extension) has put us at risk. This rot didn't happen over the summer! they need another recall to save lives before someone gets injured! 10/19/21 I called Toyota customer service again. I tried to get this issue escalated to a supervisor. They put me on hold. After 1 hour I hung up. 10/19/21 I filed a claim with the massachusetts ag. They pointed me in your direction I am so baffled how this vehicle passed yearly inspections. During mass inspections we don’t pass vehicles with dark tinted windows, lift kits that are too high, aftermarket headlights/brake light, yet, we pass a vehicle with a rotted frame that had a recall on it and a class action lawsuit. There are so many failure points here.

My keys keep falling out of the key socket. . . While driving on streets . . Has gone on for 2-3 years now. . . Also have, many times, taken the key out after parking it and not noticed that vehicle still running. . . The last time both problems occurred was yesterday.

13 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2014

My complaint does not actually involve Toyota but it does involve in aftermarket part that I installed on my vehicle. I ordered a set of weathertech floor liners, which is suppose to be molded for your vehicle floors. The major problem is the clutch petal wants to catch under the mat itself. I can show a video if you would like , but I feel this is a safety issue. I can probably fix this problem with a little bit of tinkering, but I should not have too.

14 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2014

Rear leaf spring recall - received safety recall interim notice sept. 2014 advising of defective rear leaf spring. Contacted dealership numerous times for repair, and advised continually Toyota has not yet designed or created a fix for the problem. As of July 28, 2015 dealership still does not have replacement part for the defective rear leaf spring. I have advised dealership multiple times that the vehicle when stopped and brake applied, vehicle abruptly without warning jolts forward on its own and makes a loud clunk immediately afterwards. Feels as if the vehicle has been hit from behind from another vehicle, when in fact it has not. Dealership confirmed that the issues explained above are definitely related to the faulty rear leaf spring, but has no answers or any remedy of problem. I was also advised by dealership that rear leaf spring may cause brakes to fail or fuel tank to be punctured and cause fire. This is definitely not safe, and we are concerned for our safety! please intervene!.

15 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2013

Both left and right dtrl lenses are melted from heat from the bulb, I am worried about an electrical short, or fire. Dealer says it is cosmetic and does not want to replace headlight assemblies since vehicle is out of warranty. I believe this is a safety issue that Toyota motor company should address with urgency.

16 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Toyota Tacoma. The rear bumper was rusting. The vehicle had been taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the rear bumper was rusting prematurely and was no longer under warranty. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000. Sw.

17 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2013

Inside the front left and right headlight assembly is a combination turn signal indicator/ emergency flash indicator/daytime running light. The lense for this combination indicator inside the headlight assembly has melted and affected the integrity of the component. I contacted my local dealership twice and Toyota customer satisfaction by telephone. But they did not offer any additional information for correcting the problem, except for total replacement of the complete assembly at my expense. By the regulations of the federal government with the dot Toyota should comply with part 564 of the safety regulation requirements, and by this should notify owners of the optional replacement parts as a service bullitin with a mailed notification letter. Because of this oversight Toyota has chosen to adapt a stratagy to use an exception to their warranty contract by limiting their responsibility in effect of component exclusions I. E. Light bulbs because of Toyota's inabillity to recognise and address this issue with a notification. Many of the dealers and owners who could have corrected the improper matching of the assemblies, before damage to the integrity of the signal indicators required safe operation was lost and Toyota gained considerable financial advantage at the expense of safety.

18 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

Frame has a lot of rust, which can be a safety hazard if it breaks. Dealer and Toyota states that there is no active recalls.

19 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2012

At 59,500 miles the left front wheel bearing started making a lot of noise and vibration and noticeably altered the steering. The wheel bearing was replaced under warranty. Now at 90,000 miles the bearing is faulty again and Toyota refuses to fix it again. I took it to my mechanic who told me that he sees a lot of failed wheel bearings on the Tacomas. A failed bearing can result in the wheel locking up or falling off at highway speeds.

20 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2011

I always wanted a Toyota truck ever since I was 16. Now at 38 I decided to purchase a 2009 Tacoma brand new and I currently have 30,000 miles on it and I began noticing an annoying whining sound from the rear of the vehicle at 65 - 70 mph. I brought in in to my local Toyota dealership and they said it was normal. I was shocked to hear this since I have never heard this noise from any of the trucks I have owned previosuly and I checked online and thier is a TSB for the differential for this type of problem in 2008 models. I told Toyota this and they said a rep would be coming out. A week or so later the rep came out and I recievied a call stating that the vehicle is normal and the noise can be heard in other tocamas as well. The rep said to wait and a TSB might or might not be released. I was very upset at this especially when I read online that Toyota fixed this problem for other people. I opened a case up with Toyota and they did not even care one bit. Now last week as I went to park my truck in the garage and I shifted it in drive with my foot on the brake (not the gas pedal)the vehicle's rpm raced up and the vehicle tried to lurch forward. Shocked to say the least I then shifted the vehicle into neutral waited a few moments as the vehicle kept racing up I then shut it down. I started it back up and it idled normally. The next day I called Toyota to state that this is a safety issue. Toyota wanted me to bring it in right away. I took it in and they had a long listed form of questions like where was the floor mat, was cruise control on, do I use both feet to drive one for brake and one for the gas pedal. I told them nothing was on the pedal, I did not have cruise control on, and I use one foot to drive the vehicle. My foot was on the brake only. My foot cannot even hit the gas when its on the brake. They think it is me. This is a safty issue and they treat it like it's nothing. Toyota. Bad customer warranty service. Please help me with this issue.

21 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2009

The sound system turns on -- loudly -- by itself. Cannot be turned off unless you turn off engine. I believe dealer was cognizant of this before I was sold brand new 2009 Tacoma, and (California) Toyota assures my problem is being resolved, and I will get a new working sound system, but all I seem to get are promises. As I startle easily -- this is a most dangerous paradigm!.

22 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2009

Audio system activates uncontrollably while driving. Unpredictable activation. Inability to control device, distracting drivers or surprising operators without warning. Volume uncontrollable.
