1 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2020

On 14 Nov 2020, I called coggins Toyota, in jacksonville, florida in regards to a recall on leaf springs for my 2010 Tacoma. Per the recall remedy on their website, "Toyota will replace the leaf springs with newly designed ones. " the supervisor at coggins (jenny, I believe) told me the remedy would only be implemented if the defect can be physically identified via inspection, regardless of what it says on their recall web site. She refused to implement the remedy in spite of the risk factors, which include possible fire involving the fuel tank. Toyota should be required to mitigate the hazard, not wait for it to present itself and cause harm or death. Per the Toyota recall website: VIN: 5teju4gn6az698309 year: 2010 make: Toyota model: Tacoma recall date: September 29, 2014 manufacturer recall number: e02 description; the subject vehicles' rear suspension system contains leaf springs that are constructed of either three or four leaves. There is a possibility that a leaf could fracture due to stress and corrosion. If this occurs and the vehicle continues to be operated, the broken leaf could move out of position and contact surrounding components, including the fuel tank. Safety risk: if the broken leaf contacts the fuel tank repeatedly, it could puncture the tank and cause a fuel leak. In the presence of an ignition source, this could result in a fire. Remedy: Toyota will replace the leaf springs with newly designed ones.

Cpsc: 2010 Toyota Tacoma: consumer stated the left rear brake is rubbing against a piece of metal that is attached to the frame. The consumer stated the brake line rubbed against a piece of metal when the springs on the vehicle flexed. The brake line was damaged due to the rubbing and may at some point, rupture. It appeared the damaged brake line, was caused by the defective springs or poor placement of the brake line in relationship to the piece of metal.

I have not heard a word from this dealership!!!!!.

4 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2016

Recall number 14v604 - rear suspension leaf springs. One of the leafs on the drivers side rear spring has broke and moved out of position and is hitting the rear brake line. Please see photos attached. I spoke with Toyota and after some extensive dialog have been assured that when I take it to the dealer and it is confirmed that the spring is indeed broke, that the dealer will temporarily remedy the defect at no cost to me. Additionally, when Toyota has a remedy for the above mentioned recall, I will be notified and the vehicle will be repaired to satisfy the recall. I bring attention to it on this site as the recall mentions only that the leaf could hit the fuel tank; this is to show that it could also hit the brake line which is an additional safety issue. Thank you.

5 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2016

I recently purchased a used 2010 Toyota Tacoma. I was informed that there is a safety recall (NHTSA reference id 14v604) on the rear leaf springs. The recall was issued in September 2014 and Toyota has still not developed a remedy for this safety issue. Does the NHTSA have any recourse to compel Toyota to develop a remedy? the recall has been issued for more than one year and there is still no remedy.

6 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2015

Experiencing a clunking and banging from the rear of my truck that matches the description listed in the recall letter we received pertaining to the failure of rear leaf springs on our 2010 Toyota Tacoma trd. On visual inspection, found that some of the leaf plates have moved out of position which can develop into a dangerous situation. We live 50 miles from the closest Toyota dealership and may need to have the vehicle towed because of the safety issues. We only have the one vehicle and because of family/medical matters, would need some type of loaner vehicle if our truck is to be kept by the service dept. For more than one day.

7 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Recall for rear leaf spring - NHTSA recall 14v-604. "rear suspension system contains leaf springs that are constructed of either three or four leaves. There is a possibility that a leaf could fracture due to stress and corrosion. If this occurs and the vehicle continues to be operated, the broken leaf could move out of position and contact surrounding components, including the fuel tank. If the broken leaf contacts the fuel tank repeatedly, it could puncture the tank and cause a fuel leak. In the presence of an ignition source, this could result in a fire. " we have been trying to get this resolved on our vehicle for the past 4 years. Toyota has been contacted by us numerous times and they continue to say they will contact the Toyota headquarters to get this resolved. Our vehicle was shipped to gambia, west africa in 2014, before receiving this recall, for our personal use there. The Toyota dealership in the gambia, cfao, told us that if Toyota would ship the part to them, they would install it in our vehicle. Toyota has been notified several times over the past 4 years and they continue to say they will forward the request to their headquarters (in japan?), but we have never received any response to these requests and, therefore, the status of our vehicle is still recall incomplete. According to the recall letters received, it says that any authorized Toyota dealer will inspect, and if necessary, replace the leaf springs at no charge to us. We want this part to be shipped to the Toyota dealer in the gambia, west africa: cfao Toyota, mamadi maniyang hwy, kanifing, gambia. Their phone number 220-439-6906 and fax number 220-439-6687.

8 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2014

Received a safety recall notice from Toyota for the rear leaf spring on 12/1/2014. It states the leaf springs can rust, fail and accidentally puncture the gas tank causing a fire. They have yet to produce a remedy and continue to stall instead of taking action to fix the problem. This could ultimately be a life threatening situation and Toyota continues to delay. I do not feel Toyota has the customers best interest in mind and are purely stalling for monetary reasons.

9 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2014

Received letter from Toyota in November of 2014 about a pending safety recall to my Toyota Tacoma. The letter stated that there was a defect in the rear leaf springs that could cause the leaf to break and rupture the gas tank. The letter stated that an additional recall notice would be mailed to me when parts are available. Today may 22, 2015 (7) months later, I contacted Toyota and was informed the parts are not available. Toyota has failed to remedy the defect within a reasonable amount of time.

10 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2010

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) we recently purchased a new 2010 Toyota Tacoma. On its first long distance trip, with less that 2000 miles on the vehicle and barely a month old, the rear factory installed high performance bilstein rear shocks got so hot that the oil sprayed out of the top seal melting the boots and getting them so hot the plastic material dripped down and coated the connection to the rear axle. The shocks completely failed at that point. When I took it into Toyota of orange, in orange California where we purchased the vehicle, they informed me there was a bulletin out on the rear springs. They replaced both the springs and the shocks. I have written them several times to find out whether the shocks were faulty, or if it was a rear spring issue, or just a poor design with the vehicle, but have not heard back from them to date. This is a serious safety concern for the vehicle is unstable when the shocks failed. We are trying to get an answer as to why this vehicle, with both factory installed off-road and tow packages, failed with only a couple hundred pounds in the bed. It may be a real serious safety problem if this occurs when we have a load in the bed or a pulling a trailer. Also, you may want to contact Toyota and find out why this happened. If it is a systemic problem with this vehicle, there should be a recall out and not just a bulletin to prevent someone from getting seriously injured. Our contact at Toyota of orange is arlene hopkins [xxx]; the dealership is located at 1400 n. Tustin Ave, orange, CA 92865. She has not emailed a response to our concerns and it has been over almost two weeks. The VIN # on the truck is [xxx]. Thanks.
