2000 Toyota Tundra sr5 4door 4. 7 liter v8. Sunroof glass blew off on freeway at 65mph almost hit car behind me. No police report, no person injured. November 3, 2025.
My husband and I were waking up to his alarm that went off at 5 am and he hit the snooze, during the snooze time we heard what sounded like a handgun go off so we both jumped up and opened the door leading to the outside of the house and immediately seen my truck engulfed in flames, the headlights were on and my grandson and husband both got water hose's and proceeded to put the fire out but it was so hot and we were afraid that the truck would explode if we got any closer. My next door neighbor called 911 and firetruck arrived to finish putting out the fire but the entire truck was completely melted, at least the cab. The firefighter helped get the hood open so that my husband could disconnect the battery because the headlights were still on and the battery was throwing sparks.
Badly rusted frame. Possibly eligible for recall (Toyota bxd, NHTSA #09v444). Mechanic noticed it and deemed it unsafe to drive. He contacted local dealer who declined to fix it. I contacted Toyota support and was told recall was expired. Need to know if I have any recourse.
Took the truck to have it checked over and inspection sticker, so I could put it on the road. Inspecter said the frame is not safe, he would not put a sticker on it do to the frame. He also said that year was recalled.
The frame is damaged and was told my manufacture was supposed to replace with a new one. The truck looks to be bent in between the middle. I took it to my local dealer and they are having me pay for other areas and not replacing the frame even though it's under recall.
Truck was brought in for frame recall, had some rust corrosion put on it. Was a band aid on the problem frame is rusted badly as well as suspension parts.
I has a lot corrosion in the chasis holes I can't place the spare tire because the corrosion it's everywhere.
Previously recalled rusted cross member dropped spare tire on massachusetts 495 hitting the vehicle behind me. 8/18 Toyota inspected cross members and frame and told me they all needed to be replaced and since they already did it once during recall they have fulfilled obligation. Truck recieved vehicle undercoating per campaign has had one crossember replaced and fuel straps. Truck is one owner with 74k miles and garaged. Truck inspected in 2014 and in 2017 noted no corrosion at multi point inspections from Toyota. 8/14/18 dealership noted crossmembers had rot that must be welded at an outside shop. Toyota dealership would not quote repair and not work on truck. Have 2 children 3 and 5, wife and I need a safe resolution from Toyota. The recommendation is repair at an outside shop for safety reason and I unable to find a shop to preform Toyota's recommendation and they will not work on vehicle.
My 2000 Toyota 4x4 frame has rust holes in it. It was spray coated in 2011 but that did not stop the rust. Toyota CO. Told me the recall was closed in 2012. I purchased the truck in 2013. My dealership told me it is unsafe to drive. And would not fix it because Toyota CO. Said it was no longer covered. I have photos to show the holes.
The frame has developed rust holes larger than quarter sized in multiple places.
I have tried to get Toyota to replace my frame for about maybe six years. I have taken and had the treatment around the spare tire on the frame treated, and over a couple of year all of the black colored treatment just feel off on my driveway in charleston wv where I lived at the time. I went back to love Lexus and Toyota to have my frame checked to see if they could replace it according to the settlement of the 2000-2003 Tundra trucks. Loves said my frame looked ok to them and they could not do anything at that time. This was about a year and a half ago. Now my left front side of my frame has a hole in the under neath side of the frame and the strut bar is ripping away from the frame. . . I called and talked to alexus, and al , and a higher up man in the company named rob, they would not give me better I. D. Than that, I told him this story as I'm sure his underling al did, that is why rob called me on Aug 22nd and told me there were no avenues that he (rob) could see to help me. Then I said would he help me trade for a newer truck and he (rob) said that would be up to me to do. My Tundra is undriveable and I think Toyota should fix it in the deal that was made for the 2000 to 2003 toyoya Tundra trucks. What do I do to get some help. Walk to whre I want to go? I am on disability and I have very bad conditions, and I don't make enough money to go buy a vehicle. I think if my vehicle meets their specs for repair my truck should be fixed!!!! I tried to find out the lawyers who won or settled this case and could not find any help in doing this? help from tony of huntington wv. Thank you.
The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. While inspecting the vehicle, an independent mechanic diagnosed that the entire frame and rear passenger side wheel had extensive rust and corrosion. The contact was advised that they both should be replaced or the vehicle may fail an inspection. The vehicle was included in a manufacturer recall, but the manufacturer indicated that the statute expired. The manufacturer would not provide the recall remedy for NHTSA campaign number: 09v444000 (structure). The vehicle was also included in NHTSA campaign number: 01e041000 (trailer hitches/trailer wire harness converter). The approximate failure mileage was 103,000.
I have rust holes in the front section of my truck frame. Toyota refused to fix the problem because they only appear to cover the rear part of the frame. This is a dangerous condition and could cause a life safety condition when the frame fails.
My mechanic told me my frame is rusting horribly. There is a hole 6inch by 6 inch near the rear tire. He thought he heard of a recall about this. I only have 44,000 miles on the truck. Purchased new, only had 1 mile on odometer. 12no major highway miles. I live 6 miles from work.
I was recently doing some routine repairs on my 2000 Tundra and noticed the left rear frame rail & spare tire crossover has very severe rust damage. On 9/21/2011 this 2000 Tundra was inspected for frame rust by a local Toyota dealership. I asked the tech what was the method for inspection, he replied they would hit the frame with a hammer in three to four areas, if they were unable to punch a hole in the frame it passed inspection. The spare tire was not removed to inspect the spare tire crossover. The left rear frame area (where the worst damage is on my frame) is not accessible to hit with a hammer with the spare tire in place. Toyota & the dealership is denying any responsibility in this matter. I believe that if this frame was in good shape in 2011 it should still be road worthy today (it is not) I know that I am not the only Tundra owner that is having this problem. Toyota needs to stand behind their products, they knew that these frames were going to continue to fail, I now have a truck with an above average body perfect interior and a well maintained drive train that is basically worthless. Toyota should have been required to replace these frames when they discovered this problem. What will it take to resolve this problem injury or worse death? I have been driving Toyota's since 1984, this is first time the frame failed before the rest of the vehicle. And now I hear the are having frame rust problems with later model Tundra's & tacoma's.
My wife and I seen this truck for sale at del Toyota thorndale PA. The inspection would expire soon. We took it to get inspected , the man said it has rust holes in frame and not safe April 18 2016 . We had no idea about a recall , I am pretty sure del Toyota of thorndale PA didand does. I was wondering how they could get away with putting our lives in danger along with everyone else's.
Toyota has 3 recalls on my tacoma. One of them include corrosion on the frame. However it is not covered because the corrosion is not at the right spot. The original report has the corrosion at the front with an opening in the frame. Now the corrosion has spread to the rear where the recall should cover. However, Toyota has stuck with their decision to not complete a recall. The frame is now very dangerous and will not even pass an inspection. I have not taken pictures yet because my truck is parked 2 county's away. I plan to go n Sunday with others to take these pictures so I can submit here again, to the us dot, and to Toyota again. In the meantime, anyone out there with this problem should be reporting it. The inspectors told me I was lucky I have not been seriously hurt. I have had my kids with me in this truck as well. Not sure when it started, but in 2 years, the corrosion has spread fast and this is in north carolina. I put the inspection date as the date it was found below.
Due to rust, O2 sensors are bad, exuast system bad, left rear tire ball joint defective, emergency brakes defective, body frame has holes at left side, majority of frame is rusting. Per mechanics all this is stemming from the rust. Truck has low mileage, frame is crumbling in some places and is a danger to drive safely. Just went through inspection. Exact date is unknown as to when this occurred.
Purchased 2000 Tundra in 2005. Was made aware of a recall by Toyota corp regarding rust issues with vehicle frame, gas tank strap, and spare tire fastener. I brought the vehicle to a local dealer December of 2012 for the frame inspection (tank strap and spare tire issue repaired on a separate date). I was told that a full inspection took place to include disassembling the bed of the truck. I was told that no perferations were found in the frame. A spray foam kit was used to treat the frame. On 8/25/15, I was attempting to sell my truck when a prospective buyer noticed (2) significant holes in the frame located just in front of the driver side tire. The entire frame appears to have significant rust considering it is only 15 years old. Needless to say, a sale did not take place. I was fortunate to not be driving the truck with my family when a potentially catastrophic accident could have taken place. I contacted a local dealer (not the one that treated the frame). I spoke with the service manager. He stated that he would contact Toyota corp but also stated that they may not replace the frame as it is 15 years old. He contacted me 2 days later stating that Toyota would not replace the frame or buy the vehicle back. The frame recall I referred to was not a recall according to Toyota. Rather, it was a, "good will gesture" to consumers affected by the situation. The service manager did suggest to look into finding a welder to see if they could repair it. Really?? mechanically, the vehicle is sound. I am left with scrap and out at least $4500 because I cant sell it the way it is. The important thing is that my family is still alive. What a sham. This is not right and they should be held accountable.
I received a notice from Toyota to have my frame reviewed for rust damage. This occurred in 2012, so I took the truck to my Toyota dealer and was told after inspection that my truck showed no rust. I retained the paperwork indicating such. On 12/30/2014 I took my truck for an oil change and when the truck went up on the lift it actually broke in half. The shop had never seen anything like this and was amazed at the volume of rust internally and externally. I contacted my Toyota dealer because I heard of these trucks being recalled for frame problems. They said they would not help me? please help me. I can't do anything with this truck?.
The frame on my Tundra is extremely rusted to the point where vehicle safety is becoming a concern of mine. It has very low miles for the year, and it is consistently getting worse and worse.
I have a 2000 Toyota Tundra with 104,000 miles. It was part of a limited campaign related to frame/related component corrosion. The local dealership applied crc to certain parts of the frame but did an insufficient job and the material is flaking off in large pieces. The safety issue is that one of my fuel tank gas straps rusted off and now the tank is holding on by only 1 strap. I have called Toyota corporate and returned to dealer and no one will even consider helping me remedy the gas strap issue becuase the recall period is closed. The entire bottom of my frame is rusted and several components connected to the frame are compromised. No, there hasn't been an accident but I am stuck with a vehicle this is mechanically sound but isn't safe enough to fill up with gas for frear of a fire. Toyota customer service uses very deceptive practices concerning safety. It is sad that large corporations value consumer safety so little.
I took my truck for a frame recall, inspection today. They tell me the frame fails inspection, and they would go good for frame. Then they say I will have to pay for all other cost in order to replace frame(nuts, bolts, brakes, callipers, shocks, rubbers, ect. . . )he says could go any where from $2000. To $4000. Dollars that I would have to pay. Why should I have to pay for there mistake?the truck is 14 years old(still runs well. )but why do I want to spend $4000. Dollars on an old truk that also has rust on fenders and bumper. I can,t get another inspection sticker in state of maine because of rust issues. I think Toyota tells me $4000 dollars to discourage me to do the recall. Truck only has 112,000 miles on it why don,t they just offer me some money for the truck, and probally save them money by not haveing to do the frame+labor. . Can you help me? joe raymond p. O. Purchased used 2000 Toyota Tundra that appeared to be in excellent condition. After driving it for a few days decided to crawl underneath and take a closer look at it. At first glance undercarriage and frame appeared to be in great shape until I noticed undercoating that had large bubbles in it. Poked at the bubbles with my finger and large pieces of rust flaked away from the frame and fell to the floor. Discovered many of these spots on the frame and rear leaf spring shackles. One area of special concern is rear brake lines are rubbing on the frame where the rust has pushed a leaf spring plate away from the frame and has begun to seperate. Did some research and found out how common this is on Tundras and tacomas. Also found out that Toyota has been applying some type of undercoating to these frames so they are aware it is a problem. Called Toyota and the agreed to inspect it at no charge. Of course dealer did not seem to think it was a problem so Toyota customer relations was contacted. Guess what? they see no problem either! apparaently Toyota is spraying this stuff over the rust to buy them some time. Now I find out they had been replacing these frames but that expired at the end of 2012? the tacoma has a 15 yr unlimited mileage warrenty on the frame? is it just me or does this seem a little odd? parts of the frame are paper thin and I personally do not feel it is safe to drive. I will be staying in touch with Toyota about this and I will not settle for the answer they are giving me. How can they admit they have a problem and then at the end of 2012 just pull the plug and pretend it is not a problem any more? I think it might be time to get together with the thousands of other people that are having the same issue to start a class action lawsuit.
I konw about recall on rust corrosion. The same thing has happened to my exhaust system. The front port on both manafolds are leaking. I have already replaced both cat. Converters and the resinater.
Toyota issued a recall for the 2000 Tundra frame stating the corrosion protection was insufficient for the climate in the northern region causing the mount for the rear tire to fall off. There fix was to undercoat only the back half and not addressing the front part of the frame which is made out of the same metal, the frame is rusting away at both the transmission mounts and behind motor mounts causing the truck to be very unsafe because this was brought to there attention after was they said was there cam pane which ended on12/31/12 they have nothing else to do with anybody body they did this to can be driving something that will fail and somebodys life will be lost.
Nov 2, 2011 I took my 2000 Tundra to larry h miller peoria for a " adf inspection frame Tundra" they said the rust has not perferated any metel yet , the inspection paper did not get to Toyota headquarters stating the truck has rust but just not enough yet. I called customer service. The lady I spoke to said the recall was good for 15 years from the time of first use. (Jan 2001) now they are telling me that my truck is not part of that recall and it ended in April 2012. I was given 2 case numbers from Toyota. All the service reps said yes my truck is eleigable for the replacement frame. I was given a special case manager. . He also allsured me my truck is good for replacement. . I received a call today from him with all the information , he told me my truck was part of the buy back program at 1. 5% of kelley blue book. I told him I did not want a buyback for my Tundra I wanted it repaired. He then said he was sorry he thought my truck was a tacoma not a Tundra he put me on hold to talk with his supervisor told me sorry , Toyota will not replace the frame but will give me a $ 2500 credit at a franchised Toyota dealer for parts or service. . . My truck is unsafe to drive I have approx 10 marble size holes in the frame. Motor and tranny fine only 136000 miles . I paid 12,000. 00 cash for my truck I got it with 56,000 miles on it. Toyota took responsiblity stating yes the frames are bad. . . And they would fix the problem. . Now they are not.
Toyota dealer serviced vehicle according to NHTSA campaign number: 09v444000. Dealer inspected vehicle and determined that applying the anti-corrosion coating was the appropriate remedy. Within 12 months of this being done, much of the coating flaked off, leaving the rusting frame exposed. Returned to dealer and was told there is nothing they could do.
Re; follow up notification of Toyota safety recall no. 02v-050.
The contact stated NHTSA recall 02v050000 concerning the trailer hitch was issued. This vehicle manifested the same problem as indicated in the recall, but the dealer refused to make repairs because the vehicle was previously in a wreck. The contact did not understand this exclusion because the vehicle only sustained damage to the front end. It was wrecked by the previous owner and sold to the contact before any repairs were made. The dealer who refused to service the recall was the same dealer who sold the vehicle to the contact after the accident.
On an extremely cold morning (-22deg f) I started my 2000 Toyota Tundra access cab v8 and went to turn on heat. The temperature nob would not turn easily, but did turn, and made a snapping sound. The heat never came, though the fan did work and blew cold air. I have been working overseas and not requiring the use of the vehicle since this incident, and just found the cause of the error. The cables for the heat selector seized and the dash mechanism broke. After reading many other posts on this model, and other Toyota models, they need to redesign the cable, the heat valve, the method the cable is secured and ensure that water is not penetrating the cable. The resulting problem is often not corrected properly by the dealers. I expect that this problem will cost at a minimum of $300 for the dash mechanism, $20 for each cable that may need to be replaced plus labor costs, more if it is not corrected properly the first time.
Consumer received recall notice 01e041000, and took vehicle in for repairs. But dealer stated part was not in, also dealer did not contact consumer to let her know when part would be in, and consumer could call to check on part . Dealer told consumer to bring vehicle in. When consumer took vehicle in, dealer stated it did not need part.
