1 Body problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2024

The frame of the vehicle has a recall on it because of excessive rusting. The previous owner had not gotten the recall fixed. The rusted frame causes issues with steering, maintenance, and general control and safety of the vehicle. Toyota dealerships claim this recall has expired. A rusted frame violated NY state inspection. Since this indefinitely violates the NHTSA guidelines and regulations, how can it expire? Toyota refuses to fix the recall on the frame due to “expiration” and would rather endanger roadways see as many of these vehicles still are driven on public roadways and come with a hefty cost due to the expiration. Many vehicles like this with under 100k miles have the same critical issue, leaving americas at a loss. This recall should not “expire”.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? gas tank cover plate is rusting out causing the tank to almost fall out. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? my safety and others safety was put at risk as if the tank were to fall out, it could catch the vehicle on fire. Also as the plate rusts even more day by day, the heat from the exhaust and other parts that heat up it can damage the gas tank and once again is a fire hazard. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? no, there are no open recalls from what I can’t tell by the VIN but same year has same problems and are under recall. Not sure why this one isn’t under recall. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? no. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no, there would be no lights for an issue like this.

Dear NHTSA , I have a major safety concern regarding the frame of my 2007 Toyota Tundra limited. My truck has only 128,665 miles on it, and it's pristine, except for the fact that the frame is rusted away, to the point where it needs to be replaced. I noticed last week that one of my straps holding up my gas tank was hanging, and my tank was near the ground. I brought it to my mechanic, and he said that the strap was fine, the strap was rotted off my frame. He said that the frame is in such dire shape that I was lucky that my truck didn't fall apart while driving it, and that I'm lucky the gas tank didn't drag on the highway, causing a catastrophic event. Upon researching this, I found that Toyota corporation was aware of this major safety issue. Toyota evidently replaced quite a lot of these defective frames due to rust issues, but a recall was never sent out to all Toyota Tundra owners. I just spoke to someone at Toyota's corporate office, and the person told me that there was nothing that Toyota could do for me, except say that they are sorry. How can such an important safety issue with these Toyota Tundra frames not trigger a recall? is there anything that the nhsta can do to make Toyota correct this hazardous safety issue and problem? a formal recall should have been sent out. How many more Tundra owners are still driving around with this major life safety problem, that they are unaware of? please help me, Toyota needs to do more than just say 'sorry'. If there something that you can do? if not, where do I turn next? respectfully, john j. Weber, 18 wicasse rd. , tyngsboro, MA 01879 tojweber@gmail. Com, 978-551-3022.

5 Body problem

Failure Date: 12/23/2021

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that the frame of the vehicle was severely corroded. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the fuel tank crossmember was corroded and the sub frame was severely corroded on both the driver’s and passenger’s side. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that the vehicle could not be repaired under an unknown frame corrosion recall because the recall had already expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 107,000.

6 Body problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2021

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated the door locks were inoperative. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to several independent mechanics to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the subframe needed to be replaced. Additionally, the contact was informed that the driveshaft was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 167,000.

7 Body problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2021

Rear fuel tank strap bracket detached from frame. Bracket appears to have corroded and detached at its frame weld without warning. Tank dropped about 3 inches down at rear and was barely supported by the front tank support strap and the flexible fill hose, which appeared to prevent it from shifting. The fill hose is attached to the tank via a stainless steel clamp. The tank could have dropped from vehicle when I was on the highway, before I was even aware of the issue. I happened to see something sagging when I was walking to my vehicle. It appears that the tank bracket would be very difficult to inspect, and I believe I had the vehicle inspected for a corrosion recall about 2-3 years ago. I was lucky I observed the tank when I did, it may have broken 1 or 2 days before I even noticed it. Attached photo shows the corroded detached bracket assembly. I was able to temporarily resupport the tank under the existing strap.

Failure Date: 06/22/2021

Excessive frame corrosion. I brought the vehicle in for the corrosion recall in 2018. Against my objection, they determined that my frame did not have to be replaced and they coated the frame without removing the rust. I recently brought the truck in for service at a location repair shop where he notified me that my fuel tank supports have completely rust off of the frame. He dropped the fuel tank and found that Toyota had never dropped the tank and coated the cross members above the tank. The tank has been supported only by the filler hose, endangering my life and the life of my family. When I contacted Toyota, their response was they did what they were supposed to do. Case #210622001888.

9 Body problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2020

Toyota Tundra frame corroded. There is a baseball sized hole in my frame and Toyota was notified of it and denied that is was their responsibility to repair issues related to improper anti corrosion treatment during manufacturing. They stated they had a campaign to resolve this issue but I was not notified by phone, fax, mail, email, or any other means.

10 Body problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2020

The frame - both rails - is rusted thru at the front of the vehicle. You are able to put your finger right thru one of the rails and the other you could poke thru with a ball peen hammer. It is at the very end of the rails so there is no way to weld a piece on it. This was noted on 9/15/20 but cannot tell when it first started the rusting process - has been passing inspection every year.

11 Body problem

Failure Date: 04/27/2020

On July 18 2019 my file tank strap rusted off. I noticed the tank hanging down when my g and I were on a dinner date. When I tried to repair it the bracket that bolts to the frame tore off due to rust. I had no way to fix it so I put up the tank with a ratchet strap and drove it only minimally. On April 15th 2020 my truck would not start and so after about a week or so I had a tow truck pick it up and bring it to a local shop. Before the shop got started on the vehicle they told me the frame is in really rough condition. This is news to me because I bought it from a local dealer, rhinelander Honda to be exact, on November 27 2018. I haven't even had it a year and a half. They then proceed to tell me about a Toyota frame recall/extended warranty that I may fall under. While the truck is in the shop I reached out to my local Toyota dealer, rhinelander Toyota, and they told me I was not able to get help because the warranty expired in March/may of 2019 for my truck. I told them I had just bought it and had not received any information about the frame recall. They stated they could not help me and gave me the number to the corporate office. I contacted and spoke with several people at the corporate office and they explained that they could not help me either. I have a hard time understanding why if Toyota knows there is a significant enough rust/corrosion issue that they would replace frames for the truck year that my truck falls into but give it an expiration date and then not honor fixing the issues they know exist. I never received any letters or information about the issues with the frames and now my truck is still at the shop while they try to determine the best way to make it road worthy. This is not a poorly maintained truck. Other than the frame issues it is a very nice pickup. I have one picture from the mechanic so far and I will attach it.

12 Body problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2007 Toyota Tundra. When the vehicle was started, it entered into limp mode. The vehicle had no power and the transmission felt like it was dragging. All the warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact's spouse connected a code reader to the vehicle and received failure reading "secondary air injector is stuck". The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs due to the diagnostic fees. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact of an updated warranty that was issued in 2017, which had expired. The contact also stated that the frame of the bed was rusted. The contact had not received any notifications from the manufacturer about the extended warranty and recall campaigns for the transmission and rust. The vehicle was serviced at Toyota world of newton (66 hampton house rd, newton, NJ 07860). The failure mileage was approximately 125,000.

Failure Date: 04/01/2018

The truck bed is rusting through causing flimsy bed mounting to the frame. Has the potential to break through during vehicle operation resulting in an accident injuring or killing passengers or other drivers on the road.

17 Body problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2017

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Tundra. After replacing the tires on the vehicle, the independent mechanic was unable to completely align the wheels due to severe rusting and corrosion of the suspension and subframe. The vehicle was not repaired. The local dealer was not notified. The manufacturer was informed of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The VIN was invalid. The failure mileage was 55,000.

18 Body problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2017

I own a 2007 Toyota Tundra and while stationary in my garage I noticed bubbling under my spray in bedliner where the bed contacts the frame cross rails front and back. I then crawled under the truck bed and saw a massive amount of rust on the underside of the bed. I took it fort's Toyota of pekin and they said they could not help me and that I could call Toyota customer service but didn't think it would help since I didn't notice it till after warranty was expired even though I've had every service done at their place since new. You would think the 27 point inspection they performed every time would have caught it before warranty expired since they had a TSB on the rust through problem.

19 Body problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2016

Toyota Tundra rust and corrosion in truck bed. Coming from below. Spreading like cancer and this was posted on July of 2012 # TSB-0101-12. Rust has completely eaten through truck bed floor and there are several (8+) other spots. I'm now concerned with safety for my family. I first noticed this on 9/9/16 after removing my bed liner for first time to then have a spray liner in place. I then took to dealership and then called Toyota. If they would've informed me of the TSB, I would have taken it in to have fixed as this one major hole is more than 5 years in the making. With the timing of this TSB that would've put me inside the 5 year corrosion warranty. You just never think to look under bed liner and now it's too late per Toyota. Very unhappy.

20 Body problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2016

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Tundra. The contact pulled out the bed liner and noticed that the bed was rusted out. The dealer stated that the failure was unusual and referred the contact to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to file a complaint with NHTSA. The failure was not remedied. The failure mileage was 140,000.

21 Body problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2016

Truck bed rusting from underneath in 2 spots where attaching to the frame undercarriage and bubbling on bed floor. Is a known problem and Toyota refuses to fix it because it is over 5 year warranty. Has 47000 miles on it. Could become a safety factor if it comes completely loose from the frame.

22 Body problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2016

Tl-the contact owns a 2007 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that while stationary, the right overhead handle of the vehicle fractured causing the contact to fall to the ground. The contact sustained injuries to the head and back. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000. Ad.

23 Body problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2016

Tl-the contact owns a 2007 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that while outside looked under the vehicle noticed that something was hanging under the vehicle. The contact inspected the vehicle to find the metal straps holding the fuel tank were corroded and fractured hanging from under the tank. The vehicle has not been to the dealer. The contact did not notified the manufacturer. The approximate failure mileage was 45,000. Bp.

24 Body problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2016

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Tundra. While the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed that the subframe underneath the vehicle was corroded, even though an anti corroding agent had been applied to the vehicle. In addition, the brake pads, rotors, and calipers had to be replaced prematurely on multiple occasions. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and a dealer who both confirmed that the corrosion was past the point of repair and that a new subframe would be needed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 50.

25 Body problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2014

I recently purchases a used 2007 Toyota Tundra double cab from a private party. I test drove the vehicle on ac pavement with no major issues, but upon purchasing and driving on my typical freeway commute traveling at normal speeds (55-70mph) it shakes violently. The shaking resonated at one point so violently that I lost control of the vehicle and had to drastically slow down to regain control. I am fearful of my safety and that of any passengers, especially my children. I have subsequently found forum information online that speaks to this "bed bounce" problem, and a relevant TSB from Toyota. However, I cannot find an official TSB from Toyota online or a genuine fix to the problem. Please help because I feel like I just bought a vehicle that is not safe to drive, and needless to say very angry that Toyota has not addressed this problem in full.

26 Body problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2013

The bed is rusting out all across the cross members. It started gradually, but now it's so bad I'm afraid the box could break loose and fly off the truck while going down the highway. Toyota has a service bulletin on this very issue, but when I took it in they said it was too old and they would not cover it. What difference does age make? it was clearly a manufacturing defect that Toyota even acknowledges, but because I was unaware of potential danger until after it was past the time they feel they are responsible, I am stuck with a vehicle that is unsafe and has a much lower resale value.

27 Body problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that the truck bed was severely corroded in the area where it was bolted to the subframe of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be inspected. The contact was informed that the truck bed needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was also concerned that the truck bed could separate from the subframe while the vehicle was being driven. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 132,000.

Major bed rot at mounting brackets for bed frame Toyota has a recall for this under some VIN ranges and I have been told at first that my VIN was not listed , then I was told I was out by mileage, then I was told there was not bulletin for this problem and the last time I question this problem I was told that because I didn't service my Tundra at there dealer ship they could not help me. I am a Honda master tech and take care of my truck better then most people do there own cars.

30 Body problem

T-sb-0101-12. Toyota did not notify me of this TSB. I did not discover the issue until 2 months after my 60 month service date. The dealership forts Toyota of pekin illinois would not help me. Contact at Toyota corporate they told me because it was past my 60 months service they could not help me either. So now I'm left with a vehicle that is rusting apart that I paid over $30,000 for. I have been asking and calling for over 2 years, and now I was led to this website to file a complaint here just recently.

31 Body problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

I have a 2007 white Tundra. My paint on the Tundra is now dull. Fading and beginning to peal. The disappearance of the top coat began four years into owning the vehicle. I've complained several times only to be told it's my fault. I've seen several complaints about this same issue which tells me this is not an isolated issue and I'm not the only one experiencing this. The paint on the entire vehicle is matte; no shine. No wax will bring the shine back. Stains from Toyota repair shop are consistently visible and will not wash out of the paint. Toyota doesn't seem to want to take ownership for the bad paint.

32 Body problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2010

7/2007 purchased 07 Tundra w/maint plan&extended warranty 9/2010 4342miles southcoast Toyota-maintenance,we asked them to take a look at surface rust. They noted it and said was due to salt air 2/2012 6504miles southcoast Toyota to perform brake service. Apparently brake pad had fallen off due to corrosion of calipers & pins and they refuse to service the truck because it would be too much to repair but refuse to even give us estimate. They said the corrosion has compromised the safety of the truck, but not covered under warranty. We were told that we did not drive the vehicle enough and that's why it is rusted so badly all over (truck was driven locally at least 3 or 4 times a week by elderly couple). We requested a copy of field reps report, but they said it is proprietary info we do not have access to. Service manager rudely asked us to remove our truck from the dealership but we cannot drive it off because brakes not operating properly. Were told to take the 5 yr old truck with 6500 miles to the junk yard. During 2010 maintenance when they were aware of corrosion, we should have been advised of possible brake failure or weakened structure due to rust that would occur in less than two years time. Instead elderly couple continued driving vehicle until unsafe to drive without being advised of how severe of condition the truck is. They have lived by the beach (2 miles from dealership) for 30 yrs & owned a few trucks, never rust so bad. Toyota is fortunate that no one was hurt driving this vehicle & they should do what they can to take this unsafe truck off the roads. Instead they deny any possibility that the corrosion may be a defect & is allowing this truck to possibly end up being driven since they are willing to release it. Its obvious this is not the 1st Toyota known to have corrosion issue and though not perforation, the rust is an oversight by Toyota.

33 Body problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2008

Nut holding the driver's side heat duct was loose. This allowed the heat duct to fall down and block the driver's use of the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal. Luckily for me I was not on a busy street or driving at highway speed. This defect almost completely blocks the drivers use of the brake pedal. If this happens to someone on a crowded freeway at speed they could be seriously injured or killed in the accident.

34 Body problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2007

Undercoating of vehicle was not properly installed causing the frame to rust out creating a serious safety concern as the fuel tank can fall from the vehicle due to extensive rust. Toyota is aware of this situation however refuses to repair the problem.
