5 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/26/2009

We own a 2001 Tundra with severe rust problems on the frame, brakes, body parts, spare tire, suspension and nuts and bolts all over the vehicle. The spare tire dropped from the rear of the truck due to rust and damaged the rear bumper. We have spent thousands of dollars to repair rusted items on this truck.

6 Parking Brake problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/23/2009

The frame on my 2003 Toyota Tundra is rusting badly. Toyota was unable to align my front end due to rust, and it has caused the emergency brake system to completely freeze up and the brake will not work. It is a complete failure of the emergency brake system, I have no brake. Toyota tried to free up the brakes but were not able to. They gave me a can of lubricant and told me to keep lubing the frozen section. They were completely unable to align my front end.

7 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/10/2009

Frame rust concern and rear brakes / parking brakes needing to be repaired due to rust. . . My concern is the ongoing investigation into severe rust problems. I bought the truck used (2 yrs. Old). The truck was not previously undercoated. The truck in service date is oct 01. I bought it used in 02. I then had it undercoated and have done so every fall since then. My concern is what may be going on underneath the undercoating that I can't see. Also, I had to have the rear brakes tore apart and rebuilt due to rusting components.

8 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/07/2009

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I got under my 2002 Toyota Tundra trd sr5 extra cab to assess the rust this past weekend. I was dumbfounded! control arms, front wishbone, suspension brackets, and rear differential look like a shipwreck that's been under the sea for 100 years. The rear differential housing has rusted completely through and is leaking through the side of the housing! the spare tire holder is so rusted the wheel is about to fall off. All shields and safety guards have fallen off or will soon. I bought the truck new in Nov of '01. It now has 84,000 miles. I've had all recommended services performed at the dealer. They never mentioned the rust although they do a "safety inspection" at every service. I've always washed off the salt in the winter. The body panels show no rust at all and the outside of the truck looks like new. I have taken excellent care of this vehicle. I had a chevy truck kept under the same conditions that after 15 years and 250,000 miles looked nothing like this. I cannot drive this truck in this condition.

9 Parking Brake problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/18/2009

Our 2000 Toyota Tundra (with ~60,000 miles) was parked it in my relatives driveway on 10/18/09. When we went to drive it out of my aunt's driveway on 10/18/09, she started yelling, "stop, something is leaking!" looked at the front drivers brake line and saw a hole that was pushing out brake fluid with high pressure when brakes were applied. Thankfully, the brakes failed in the driveway instead of on route 2 between albany, NY and massachusetts. If they failed on the drive, my husband would likely have been killed on the mountainous road. Carefully drove the truck to the nearest dealership, lia Toyota of colonie on 10/18/09. Told them about the broken brake line and asked for a frame inspection to be done first, as we did not want to put money into the truck if the frame had issues. On 10/26/09, we finally received an estimate for the work and documentation stating "the frame has normal rust wear for the age of the vehicle" and "the frame has no perforation at this time". The estimate said that the front driver brake lines and junction box were rusted through. The emergency brake pivot was rusted & seized on both sides and completely inoperable, and the front sway bar link was rusted through. Since we were told by lia Toyota of colonie that the frame was intact (no holes) we authorized the work. We picked up our repaired Tundra on 11/02/09 and kept the old parts. The emergency brake did not hold the car and needed adjustment, so the following day, 11/3/09, we took it to our local dealer, colonial Toyota of milford. We asked for a brake adjustment and a frame inspection. The next day, 11/04/09, I received a call from colonial Toyota, saying that our Tundra frame had holes in it and we "should not put another dime into it" and "it is not safe to drive". Colonial service took pictures of the perforated frame and called the Toyota reps, who came and looked at our Tundra. On 11/10/09, we were notified that Toyota declined to repair or replace our frame.

10 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/15/2009

I have an 2001 Toyota Tundra that was purchased and has been driven in the northeast. It has a rusted(quoted from a Toyota mechanic) emergency brake line. Wondering if this is apart of the rust recall already in place with the Tundras.

11 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/13/2009

Front drivers side sway bar link is corroded through. No accident or injury but only because I knew what was going on after I saw the broken link and drove accordingly. After further investigation we find that the brake calipers are corroded beyond salvage and the frame has heavy rust in a number of areas. It is clear that this truck will be worthless in a few years due to the heavy corrosion and we will all be lucky if someone is not killed due to corrosion damage causing something to fall off and cause a wreck.

12 Parking Brake problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/26/2009

Excessive rust on frame and undercarriage. Emergency brake rocker pivots lock up.

13 Parking Brake problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/19/2009

The vehicle was parked in a flat parking lot and the parking brake failed. The first time, the parked car rolled backwards and hit a sign. No person was injured. I thought that perhaps the pedal was not fully depressed. The second time, about 3 weeks later, the vehicle rolled backwards and hit another vehicle. I had to call the insurance company and file a claim. I intend on bringing the car to the dealership, however after doing a bit of research on the internet, it seems to be a common problem, and I wanted to make sure to report it, because it has the potential to be fatal.

14 Parking Brake problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/16/2009

I own a year 2000 Toyota Tundra, which I purchased as a new vehicle. The truck has approximately 81,000 miles on it and has been garaged for the entire time that I have owned it. The underside of the vehicle has shown extreme rusting, especially the brake system which has failed twice due to corrosion. During the most recent brake failure I could not stop the vehicle while descending a hill and downshifted the transmission to slow down. Additional rust problems have included replacement of all front and rear brake lines, including the rear proportioning valve. The front rotor caliper pins have also seized due to rust. The emergency brake seized due to rust and was not operational. Both sway bar links and bushings failed due to rust. The heat shields around the muffler and catalytic converter rusted off the Tundra and may have posed significant safety hazards to drivers traveling behind me on the highway. These corrosion problems were reported to Toyota and the truck was inspected by a district service representative for frame rusting only (summer 2009). The other problems with the braking system, etc. Were completely ignored, even though I brought this to the service rep's attention. In addition, the district manager was contacted several months ago and has not addressed my concerns. All the above problems above were repaired at the local Toyota dealer, whose mechanics commented that the underside of the truck was severely corroded. Also, the repairs are documented in my vehicle's service history.

15 Parking Brake problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/11/2008

2000 Tundra having emergency brakes rusting all the time along with crank bell and rear diff. Housing.

16 Parking Brake problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/15/2007

I own a 2007 Toyota Tundra crewmax sr5 with the 5. 7l v8. I have found that when y applying the parking brake there was not enough force to hold the truck in place on its own when on a hill. I first noticed this when I applied the parking brake with the truck in drive , but not applying any pressure to the gas pedal, and the truck began to drive forward with very little resistance. I took the truck to the dealership, and they informed me that this was how the engineers designed it. They did agree to tighten it down further at my request, and when they tried to show me that it was fixed, it again began to drive forward and the only way to stop it was to apply the normal brake. I was then again told that it was only for assistance, and that I should not expect the parking brake to hold the truck in place on its own. I asked how it could assist when it couldn't even handle it on its own, and was then informed that the truck has 381 hp and that's a lot of hp for the truck to stop, and when I said that it didn't have 381 hp at 600 rpms I was laughed at and told again that it wa sonly for assistance.

17 Parking Brake problem of the 2005 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/02/2007

Parking brake engaged partially. Also the engine idled too fast. This combination lead to the vehicle to start moving unexpectedly. As a result my wife injurered her foot and damage to the vehicle was sustained. This could have easily resulted in a fatality.

18 Parking Brake problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/19/2006

: the contact stated the column gear shift was placed into park atop a hill with the emergency brake engaged and the engine running, the vehicle rolled forward and crashed into a tree. After initial parking of the vehicle, the contact exited the vehicle. While attempting to reenter the vehicle and stop the forward motion injuries were sustained. The vehicle rolled downhill 60-70 yards and totaled due to the extensive damage. After the crash, the contact inspected the vehicle and the column gear shift was in park and the emergency brake was still engaged. The vehicle was not seen by an authorized dealer or repair shop. Updated 03/28/06.

19 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/14/2005

Due to premature corrosion (vehicle 4 years old) parking brake failed to function, failed nys inspection, was repaired (03/14/2005). Due to premature corrosion, spring broke, was repaired (01/02/2008). Power steering rack rotted, had to be replaced. Approx mileage 150,000. Front suspension links rotted out. Called Toyota (04/15/2009) voiced our concern for rotting frame, no recall at that time. They issued a complaint #. Took vehicle to dealer for inspection for three recalls, a0f, b0d, 90m on 05/02/2012. Inspection not properly done, chunks of rust still can be flaked off, possible holes behind, but they sprayed crc over top of the loose scaling, covering over the problems. We had no choice in what they were doing with our property. We took it in for an inspection. After said inspection, if it would not get a new frame, we would have opted to take it home, removed all loose scaling prior to the crc being applied. We were not given any options, our vehicle was already on the way to their collision shop for the work. This would have accomplished two things; the dealership would know without a doubt that there were no holes and the crc would stick directly to the frame minimizing future corrosion (that is the objective of the recall afterall) I called Toyota corporate and voiced my concern with a spray covering over the problem, and the truck not being safe. My case is still pending, but based on the initial call back from the case manager, it is not looking like there will be a resolution in our favor, we will see. My concern is, how many of these Toyota dealers are not thoroughly inspecting these trucks, spraying over the problems and putting these vehicles back on the roads. How safe is that?.

20 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/01/2005

I have a 2001 Toyota Tundra that has a ruinous amount of rust on the undercarriage. I have spent thousands on exhaust work and can no longer justify putting money into this truck. The check engine light came on within months of my having purchased the vehicle. After many attempts to repair the problem, the light will go off, but then something else goes wrong with the exhaust system and it comes back on. It's on right now despite my having just gotten it out of the garage a few weeks ago. The heat shield continuously rattles because of the rust. Also, the parking brake line is rusted to the point of being unusable. This is my work vehicle and I'm afraid I'm getting close to being without my truck. I am very disappointed in this truck. If I'm not helped out by this situation, Toyota will lose a life-long customer.

21 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/01/2002

Brake pedal fades under pressure and acts inconsistently. At times the brakes engage near the top of the pedal and at other times almost at the floor. Brake light has come on several times. Parking brake will engage after three or four clicks and the next time will not engage almost to floor. Dealer has replaced pads, drums, disks, etc. Dealer and Toyota motor sales will not return calls, letters, etc.

22 Parking Brake problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/28/2001

I have a 2000 Toyota Tundra which has had numerous problems with the front and rear brakes. The front brakes were "repaired" within the first 4,000 miles of driving but the front disc rotors continue to warp within 10-15,000 miles of additional "repairs". The rear brakes are frequently bathed in oil from leaking rear-ed seals caused, I'm told, by plugged rear-end vents. The vent has been cleaned or replaced and the rear seals replaced five times in the history of the car (now 109,000 miles). The bias between the brakes is extremely favoring the front brakes and the abs has not worked for some time. Panic braking, especially in rain-soaked or snow-covered surfaces entirely is entirely insufficient and dangerous. I have been very disappointed by Toyota's responsiveness to these problems and seeming inability to fix these problems. I've read numerous similar complaints from other Tundra owners. This is a pervasive, persistent and life-threatening design flaw that is, apparently, unfixable.
