Toyota Venza owners have reported 56 problems related to service brakes (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota Venza based on all problems reported for the Venza.
After applying the brakes in a sudden situation, the automatic emergency braking came on but the car didn't stop. The brake pedal was pushed all the way to the floor board but the car didn't stop and crashed into the vehicle in front. This happened once before but didn't end in a crash. This was a total brake failure.

We own a 2022 Toyota Venza hybrid and are having problems with it "lunging forward" when applying the brake. This has happened multiply times. The first is when I was pulling very slowly into the garage because the car just fits through the door having only inches to spare on either side of the side view mirrors. As I was lightly applying the brake, the car lunged forward, the word brake in bold red letters appeared on the dashboard (the forward collision warning) and the car jerked to a stop by itself avoiding hitting the back wall. It happened in a split second. No damage, no injuries. Not so the second time. On Feb 13, 2025, we were going to a local business. My husband was in the front passenger seat. We pulled into the parking lot and I turned right into the parking space. As I lightly applied the brake, the car violently lunged forward hitting the cement post supporting the building. "no forward collision warning light this time". There was a loud bang noise and both the driver, upper and lower and passenger airbags were deployed. The seatbelts jolted us back to our seats and locked up. There was smoke and a nasty smell (from the airbags). This all happened in a split second. I couldn't open the door, so I had to crawl over the console with help from my husband to get out of the car. I was taken to the er by ambulance to get x-rays of my chest which was badly bruised and my ankle which was also bruised. My husband escaped injuries but was in shock as well. Since this happened, we have done research on the internet and found numerous complaints and instances of this same thing happening to drivers when gently applying the brakes, particularly in Toyota hybrid vehicles. Many people narrowly escaping severe injuries and death in similar situations. I guess it has to take a few fatalities for Toyota to do something about it. What a shame! the insurance CO. Totaled the car. We won't be getting another Toyota.

My wife and I stopped to get our mail at our community hoa mailboxes. I was driving. I stopped, set/engaged the brake hold button while my wife got the mail. She was about to get back in and suddenly the car lurched forward very rapidly and crashed into the neighborhood playground and the chain linked fence. I could not stop the acceleration and had to keep forcefully applying the brakes and the vehicle finally quit. I was able to steer to avoid some kids playing basketball. I could have injured my wife or others, it could have been very tragic. The 3 boys got out of the way and helped us afterwards picking up the car debris left all around. The damage happened very quickly. I felt such shock afterwards and trauma wondering what happened and what could have happened. The police did a report and took pictures, our insurance declared it a total loss. We have contacted Toyota and are waiting for someone to inspect it before it is hauled away. No warnings prior, the vehicle has worked well. As I managed to drive it home, we noticed a machanical error code after the fact.
My wife owns this Toyota Venza. On October 9, 2024, I took the vehicle to the dealership for maintenance and all regular checkups passed. No sensor lights nor problem lights were on during the incident. On October 16, 2024 my wife was parking in a spot to pick up the mail in our community's mailbox. She pressed the brake and tried to park the vehicle when suddenly the motor accelerated over the parking lines on its own to a small hill continuously. My wife tried to press the brake multiple times with no success and the motor continued accelerating on its own. My wife turned the steering wheel to the right to avoid running into the hill or flipping the vehicle over. Once turned, the vehicle continued accelerating crossing over a neighborhood street and finally crashing into a neighbor's wall. Once it crashed the wall, all air bags were deployed and the vehicle rebounded back into the street where my wife was eventually able to shift it into parking. Once parked, the vehicle wouldn't start or move at all. Thankfully, there were no fatalities but my wife crashed into a wall and had to be taken to the hospital to be treated for the bruises in her legs and body from the air bag impact. Additionally, our community is gated and thankfully there is little traffic but this problem in a main road or highway could easily injure or kill people. We reported the accident to the local police and filed a report with them. We also notified insurance of the crash and have started a repair claim but the vehicle has not been inspected for any damages or problems. We have video recording of the incident which we will use for insurance and can provide as part of this complaint.

The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 2,500. The VIN was not available.
The contact owns a 2024 Toyota Venza. The contact stated that while attempting to make a left turn, the brake pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to respond, and the brake pedal became inoperable. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 24v708000 (service brakes, electric, service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 2,000.
Since I bought the Venza, the brake has not been working well, so I am trembling with fear and the risk of an accident countless times. I didn't know how to claim this, so I endured it and drove this car until now. Today, after reading an article about fisker's break issue investigation. I decided to report it to NHTSA. Please investigate this and resolve this issue.

I was parking my car in a parking lot very slowly (1 mile/hr, or less). My foot was on the break paddle, and I just turned into a parking spot. Suddenly, I heard huge acceleration noise and the car surged forward so rapidly, so powerfully on its own, and totally lost control. Then the break did not work at all. There are bushes in front of the parking spot and it is on top of a retaining wall with side walk road below. The crazy lost controlled car run through the bushes and jumped down from the top of the retaining way onto the side walk road. It hit the railing of the side road and then slowed down. I then gained the control of the car as the break back to work. The car is badly damaged and several parts falling down when it jump down the retaining wall. It was so terrified and I though I will die. And if someone was walk in the side road at that moment, they will be killed. I am still shaking when think about what was happen. Luckily, no one was there. I bought the car in Jan. 2022, brand new, only 8 miles used. Now it has around 14,000 miles on it. *** in sept. 2022, someone also posted very similar incidence for Toyota 2021 Venza in toyatonation. Com discussion starter • #1 • Sep 3, 2022 soshima has this happened to anyone else who owns a 2021 Venza? as I was slowly pulling in (going about 2 miles or less) to a perpendicular parking spot at my apartment complex, I took my foot off the accelerator, all the sudden my car lunged forward and rapidly accelerated forward on its own. It was completely terrifying to have the car take over. The car jumped the curb and went down a hill and I crashed head on into a two story garage at my apt complex. I saw a "malfunction" on the dashboard and the air bags did not deploy. I injured my back, neck and right arm. My car that only has 9k miles on it, was completely totaled. Toyota's product liability dept - 3rd party engineers inspected the electronic data recorder. And car I'm awaiting the final report from Toyota.

It's its been about 4 times for myself and twice for my husband. When pulling out of parking lot onto busy street making a right hand turn, the car failed to accelerate so that I can merge onto the street. I almost got reareded twice because of this not being able to get up to speed. I have taken it to the dealer twice. The first time they told me there was a computer recall so he would do the update and it if it happened after that to bring it in. We'll it's happened many more times. And the dealer can't tell me what it is.
I was at a stop sign and I was on an incline and I let the brake go to press the gas and the car started to go backwards and I almost hit the car behind me and and press the gas to go forward. Now anytime I am on an incline during a stop and if I let go the brake the car goes backwards.

I was on the highway, no ice on the road, in a construction zone, going about 50mph. The cars in front of me stopped completely, and the light to warn me to "brake" came on the dashboard to engage the brakes, but the emergency braking system failed to engage the brakes and slow down the car. I also pushed on the brakes, but nothing happened, the car did not seem to slow down at all, like I had no brakes. I kept going and crashed into the vehicle in front of me. It's like the brakes did not work and the automatic braking did not work either. There was a complete system brake failure. Also, the air bags did not deploy, which I'm surprised with so much front end damage to my car. The brakes also did this last year, and I collided with a vehicle the same way, but there was ice on the road, so at that time, I attributed it to the icy road. Now since these two accidents are so similar, I am concerned about a defect in the brakes and automatic emergency braking system. I am also worried to own a vehicle with the automatic emergency braking system. I am having the vehicle towed to the dealership to have the brakes looked at.
Complete brake failure when exiting freeway resulted in crashing into a concrete barrier and guardrail at a high rate of speed before impacting another vehicle. Vehicle has an electronic emergency brake that could not be engaged. Vehicle could not be put in reverse or park to slow impact. There were three prior issues with the vehicle regarding brakes and acceleration. The car had less than 250 miles on it. Issue was reported to the dealer from where it was purchased after the collision. Vehicle is likely totaled pending an assessment by the insurance company. As the driver I had the choice of a direct impact with a string of cars stopped at the end of the off-ramp at a high rate of speed or hitting the barrier wall to slow my momentum. I chose the barrier wall to reduce the risk of the collision upon others.
Forward collision avoidance; automatic emergency braking; adaptive cruise control; I pulled into a straight-ahead handicapped parking slot to park, going about 1-3mph . There was a handicapped sign in front of me on a newly installed steel pole. I pulled in within inches of the pole. When I tried to engage the brakes, the braking system failed to engage the brakes and slow down the car. The car instead accelerated and would have broken through a store front had the pole not stopped it. I also pushed on the brakes, but nothing happened, the car did not seem to slow down at all, like I had no brakes. It's like the brakes did not work and the automatic braking did not work either. There was a complete system brake failure. Also, the air bags did not deploy, which I'm surprised with so much front end damage to my car. So, in a panic to stop the forward acceleration, I put the car in reverse; after which the vehicle accelerated in reverse out of my control and crashed into a 3-foot concrete wall and another vehicle next to the wall. This crash stopped the vehicle. I had no control over speed of the acceleration, steering of the vehicle, or stopping. I am concerned about a defect in the brakes and the pkbs braking system. I could have been killed or backed into another person or car killing someone else. The car has been repaired. I did receive a msg about the raider cruise system being on days prior; I didn't know what it meant; it went away and I did not pursue why cruise control was on because I didn't engage it. I am seeking inspection by Toyota and my aaa insurance rep.
2021 Toyota Venza while being driven while merging onto the highway, the vehicle lost all braking power causing my wife to almost cash into the car in front of her. The vehicle was moving between 50 to 55 miles per hour. Once the vehicle was pulled over, the dash was displaying these error messages: pre-collision system malfunction; braking power low/visit your dealer; check engine; and secondary collision brake system malfunction. This caused my wife to be stranded on the side of the highway. The vehicle has 24,811 miles on it. The vehicle had to be towed to the Toyota dealership. This is the second time this happened. The first time this happened was about 20 months ago when I had just bought the vehicle new and put about 400 miles on it. The first time the dealership said they could not find anything wrong with it.
After traction control recall firmware update was completed, my vehicle now turns on the parking break randomly when coming to a stop while still in drive. The vehicle says time for maitenance with aprox 5,500 miles before service required. Remote services no longer connecting. The firmware update to correct traction control not turning on automatically at vehicle startup has caused other electrical features to fail/malfunction.
As I was pulling in slowly (going about 2 miles or less) to a perpendicular parking spot at my apartment complex, I took my foot off the accelerator to brake. And all the sudden my car lunged forward and rapidly accelerated forward on its own. It was completely terrifying to have the car take over. The car jumped the curb and went over a hill. I couldn't stop the car and I crashed head on into a two story garage. I saw a "malfunction" on the dashboard and the air bags did not deploy. I injured my back, neck and right arm. My new car that only has 9k miles on it was completely totaled. Vehicle is scheduled to be inspected by Toyota's product liability department - 3rd party engineer. The only other time I was concerned about the vehicle was about 5 months ago, I was at a stop sign and when I pushed on the gas, the car felt like it lost acceleration power, but then it was fine after that so I didn't think anything of it. Vehicle is available for inspection for a very limited time (probably within 1-2 weeks of this post), after Toyota inspects it, it will be going to the salvage yard. If you want to inspect it, please contact me ASAP.
As I attempted to turn left in the parking lot of a strip mall with several restaurants, my engine suddenly revved and accelerated and despite pumping the brakes several times I could not slow it down or stop it. As a result I slammed into a concrete berm, kept going and crashed through the glass doors of a coffee shop/restaurant, continued on and the car did not stop until it hit a metal counter. Fortunately I was not hurt, nor did I kill anyone, although I was told two workers went to the hospital with bruises and lacerations on their legs. Since I was unable to stop the car, not only was my life at risk, but anyone who crossed my path or who was in the coffee shop could have been crushed. The police came, made a report and had my car towed to their impound lot. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center as of yet. . My insurer will have the car towed to a preferred repairer and they will inspect the car to determine whether it's repairable. I have asked them to check what made the car suddenly accelerate. I was informed at the police lot that they expect the car will be towed and inspected on Monday, 7/18/22. The accident occurred on 7/14/22. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representative or others. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request.
Pulling into a parking spot (under 5 mpg), brakes did not engage. Car drove up onto the sidewalk. Had to put car into reverse to avoid hitting the building. While in reverse, brakes would not engage as well had to turn off the vehicle to stop it after it hit the curb 20ft behind the vehicle. Had vehicle towed to the dealership. They could see where the brakes were engaged 3x, but could not replicate the issue. Although there was snow, ground was not icy or slippery.
1) brakes consistently 'softer' than normal. Sometimes require pumping the pedal to stop at all. Can be difficult to start car, brake pedal may not move at all to get starter button to light up. **every time after sitting over night, when the car starts the pedal 'mushes' to the floor. It must be pumped to get any resistance. 2) lack of reliable brakes poses real safety risk for everyone. I just had incident where I had difficulty stopping, nearly in accident. 3) one mechanic experienced lack of brakes when driving it, had to pump pedal to stop. 4) multiple independent auto repair shops as well as local Toyota dealer service have charged me thousands to repair, without success. 5) 6/27/23 warning light, 'check abs', sensor unplugged by mechanic. Once master cylinder replaced, sensor reconnected. 6) I just called Toyota corporate, was told they couldn't help, I'd have to pay to have it looked at again.
Sometimes when I'm driving the Toyota Venza 2021 downhill and press the brakes they freeze and sound weird without control to stop the car. I think is very dangerous. I reported two times in the dealership but nothing happened.
The contact owns a 2021 Toyota Venza. The contact stated while attempting to start the vehicle, several unknown warning lights illuminated. A dealer was contacted. The contact stated that during the first failure, the vehicle was towed to the dealer to be diagnosed, however the diagnosis was unknown. The contact stated that during the second failure, the steering wheel warning light illuminated, the steering wheel became difficult to turn, and the accelerator and brake pedals seized. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, and thirty seconds later, the vehicle operated as intended. The contact stated that during the third failure, the contact became aware that the fuel gauge was not operating properly. After refueling the vehicle, the fuel gauge warning light illuminated. Major brake problem ; we were saved miraculously I have a Toyota Venza 2011 and I am the only owner ; the car drives smooth , however with major brakes issue my brakes and rotors are still in good condition, however; twice in the highway I wanted to slow down and the brakes don’t work , I freak out and my steering wheel looses control and almost hit cars but after a couple minutes it works the worst one was a couple days ago ; was driving at 30 miles an hour trying yo drop off my daughter for her game , hit the curb , brakes completely lost control and the car won’t stop we panicked the car luckily kept going in the direction of the parking lot and I chose to go through bushes to stop the car and put the emergency brake ; the car after a few horror minutes stopped if the car merged a little bit outside the parking lot there is fast traffic and a lake right after I had the car towed right away , I will not touch that car again at the dealership they tried to dismiss the problem saying that brakes are fine I read multiple complaints on forums about the same issue this brake disaster needs to be recalled people’s lives are in play if this doesn’t get resolved there will be lawyers involved.

I put my vehicle in reverse and the brakes seemed to lock, when I put it in drive it continued to back up. No matter what gear I put it in it stayed in reverse. I was blocking a lane at the mall ,u my husband tried to push it while in neutral but he couldn't budge it, it was still in reverse. I think it has a defective transmission, and it only has 40,000 miles on it. Scary and very dangerous situation.
Abs, esc, and brake indicator lights randomly display upon driving the vehicle. They display intermittently, sometimes after 1/4 mile of driving, other times after 25 miles of driving. They display on smooth or rough roads, with no apparent cause. While I have not yet had an accident or system fail, it is of concern because I transport my daughter in this vehicle. On a vehicle that has 50,000 miles on it and other documented cases of this as well, I believe this is a cause for concern. I am not sure of the cause or the solution to this problem as of yet. The vehicle does not have to be in motion when the lights appear either. They appear at stop signs or lights, when driving slowly, or at highway speeds. I am unaware if the systems themselves stop working upon the indicators activation or not. I believe that this warrants more investigation and possibly a safety recall as abs and esc are safety features and brakes are (from my civilian perspective) a necessary function for the vehicles safe operation.
While moving, the Venza seems to jerk, as if it's about to stop, w/out me applying a foot to the brake pedal (my foot is on the gas). This has happened several times this year.
On hwy vehicle wouldn't stop or steer, lost all power and control. Came to stop in the median, had to have towed, cause is listed as :173600410, c1201, c1241, c1441 Toyota of irving called to inform me that they were not able to recreate the problem and that the vehicle is operating as designed by the manufacturer.

Car was slowly pulling into a parking spot, when all of a sudden it revved its engine and accelarated. My foot was on the brake and it would not stop. The revving noise was loud. I hit a large tree that was luckily at the end of the parking spot. The tree is what stopped the car. When the car stopped, I looked and saw was in drive. I was able to put in reverse and back up and park safely. I shut the car off immediately.
The contact owned a 2013 Toyota Venza. While driving 60 mph with the cruise control activated, the brake pedal was depressed, but failed to respond without warning. As a result, the contact crashed into another vehicle. A police report was filed. The contact sustained bruises to the right leg and chest area that required medical attention. The vehicle was towed and deemed destroyed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 48,112.
I turned from a stop on a city street into a small parking lot. While braking in the parking lot, the vehicle accelarated. I hit the brakes harder and the vehicle went faster, jumping the concrete bumper, only stopping when I hit a parked car.

The vehicle had 5900 miles when a loud screeching started coming from the front driver side. The brake wore unevenly and damaged the rotor. Toyota did not stand behind their product.
While trying to brake, my car accelerated and I almost hit the cars infront of me. I was getting off the highway to the rotary and there was cars stopped in front of me and I tried to brake and the car accelerated instead.
Sudden acceleration while moving forward slowly to park in driveway behind my leaf. During acceleration I could not brake and crashed into my leaf which went forward into the beam in my garage and stopped both the cars.

Tl the contact owns a 2015 Toyota Venza. The contact stated that the rear brakes vibrated and then seized while driving various speeds. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to gosch Toyota (located at 350 carriage cir, hemet, CA 92545, (951) 808-3134) to be diagnosed, but a failure code could not be found. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.
I was approaching a stop sign at the corner or church and main streets in chester, vermont at less than 10 mph the car surged forward and would not stop I t-boned a car coming down main street and the car continued to surge across the road this is a surging problem that Toyota is fully aware of.
Accident stopping at stop sign car accelerated thus crashing into another car the Venza surged forward and accelerated slightly before finally stopping on opposite side of roadway completely out of control surging forward on its own.
