I was driving to work one morning and my car stopped out of nowhere and it wouldnt start again. I called a tow truck to take it to a repair center just to find that I had no gas eventhough the dash indicated I still had a little less than half a tank of gas . I was informed that I could either buy a new gas tank which would cost a lot or keep track if the miles and fill the gas tank accordingly. I was about to get on the freeway if this would if happened there it could of caused a major accident. I was also told at the repair center that this is common in Yaris after doing sone research and going on to forums myself I found many Yaris owners have gone through this.

Ran over something on the highway in Yaris rental car. The fuel tank was punctured / or ruptured as there was a long crack in it and fuel poured out. Luckily I was able to pull off highway to a gas station (~ 1/4 - 1/2 mi) where I parked and we exited car. Additional fuel ran out quickly (gallons?). Reporting because of fuel tank / safety issue. Strength? vulnerable location?.

On 1/29/11 I ran out of gas when the fuel gauge showed that I had 1/8 of a tank. The dealer said that he fuel sending device had to be replaced on my 2008 Toyota Yaris. I was told by the dealer that"this happens on Yarises a lot'". If this is happening so much why isn't the part being recalled? it is not safe to run out of gas unexpectedly, especially in the middle of the street or freeway.
